Questo libro mi è piaciuto un filino meno dei precedenti perché la parte gialla è praticamente inesistente, se ne parla solo negli ultimi 3/4 capitoli. I due protagonisti, poi, hanno attirato meno la mia attenzione rispetto ad altri nei libri precedenti. Comunque, nel suo insieme la storia non mi è dispiaciuta.

Mary Hudson from Hudson Sibling Services goes to return money to Joe Beck for a case that was never investigated. When they meet, they are immediately caught up in gunfire! Joe is actually Walker Daniels. He and his siblings, Carlyle and Zeke, have basically been on the run for 10 years after their mother's murder, and have been trying to solve it ever since. Mary offers to let them lay low at her family ranch and help investigate. She and Walker start getting romantic.
What I will say is that Helm has done a great job in fleshing out Mary and Walker, making them feel like real people. She even manages this with Carlyle and Zeke, which is rare for secondary characters in category romances. Mary and Walker are able to have adult discussions, work out solutions and generally behave rationally. I liked them both. I looked forward to their happy ending. There's a lot of believable and sharp dialogue, and one line made me laugh out loud.
If only there had been a plot.
We keep getting told that this case is complex and dangerous, but we are never shown. By the time this statement had been repeated to me in chapter 10 with zero information about what the fuck the case actually was, I was a bit fed up. Aside from the initial shoot-up, they're just at the ranch, seemingly in no danger at all. There was nothing complex - Mary organises all of Walker's notes and clippings, but we're not told what's in them. It was hard to feel any stakes in the story whatsoever because there was zero detail on what the threat was. Give me something!
The detail about a link to a senator in the book's blurb could almost be a spoiler since it arrives so late in the game. The case is only cracked open because a character who knew what was going on all along finally decided to reveal the truth. That is, unfortunately, one of the laziest ways to solve a mystery. Mary and Hudson don't seem to do much investigating; pretty much everything is being done off page by secondary characters and Zeke's convenient operative connections. Snore. Once again, it leads to this story feeling like it has zero stakes.
By the end, it's not entirely clear who the antagonist was really after, what he actually did or wanted to do, why he did it, or why that shootout at the beginning happened.
It's clear that Helm took the time to create fully fleshed out protagonists with clear motivations and desires, and interesting side characters, which makes it all the more disappointing that she threw them into a plot that was vague, went nowhere and had no stakes.

I didnt enjoy this book as much as the previous ones.(Read book 1 & 2)
The Hudson siblings were hardly part of the book. It was strange to read that there was no mention of the siblings even during the climax and end of the book.
I also wasnt a fan of the MCs or their romance.
Mary definitely should have stuck to administration work.Not because she wasnt capable ,she just didnt have the relevant experience to handle cases,that also as a lead investigator.Working behind the scenes and going on the field is very different.
Then there was ML's sister.She was an idiot.First she did a stupid thing and then she kept that a secret for so long.I wasnt able to understand how she thought she could protect her brothers by hiding her secret. Anyway,atleast they learnt teamwork by the end of the book.
I just hope there is a leap in the next book,otherwise I dont really see her with Cash. He has a daughter to protect and I dont think the sister has that maturity level to take on the role of a mother.

Mary sets herself impossibly high standards, not letting emotion, fear or stress pull her from the path she has set. But she wears a mask that hurts my heart, she doesn't allow herself to feel, to hurt or to stop. She is the glue that holds the family together, but she has so many emotions and fears bottled up, it's a surprise she hasn't broken down before now.
But it takes a slightly wild and completely crazy Walker who is juggling many balls and who is also terrified of failure, to break through her masks to the Mary underneath. I love Mary and Walker together, they form a bond that allows them to drop their walls and show the other their fears, their weaknesses and their hopes for the future.
The Hudson siblings are awesome and welcome you with open arms for every visit.

This is Mary’s book and it’s a Great addition to the series. One of the characters you meet is from the North Star group and it was fun to have that connection to a prior series. I did enjoy Mary’s character being more fully fleshed out as she is a bit stereotypical in the previous books. Still hoping that Jack and Cash each get a book as well as Zeke.

My patient gave this book to me and said it was good! I’ve never read any of the others! I did enjoy it, but it was a little more romance than I’d like! Still enjoyed reading something more outside of my range though!

Who would have thought prim and proper Mary would fall in love with Walker who is a step or two away from criminal behavior? Walker never saw himself with a woman like Mary.
