This is my review for whole series.

I have read some sport manga, and the main plot of this genre is cliché, from zero to hero. Although they all basically have the same basic plot, there are still new sport manga since Captain Tsubasa. Authors/creators of sport manga are inventing new ideas in premises, themes, or characters (oh, and illustration arts too, we are talking about manga). At a glance on the cover of the manga, everyone can guess that Eyeshield 21 offers a new main theme in sport manga: American Football.

There are more than you see on the covers. Using another oftenly used plots (shy main character, delinquent students transform into tough athletes, dark background of some characters), this manga could prolong the plots finely without many arc stories.

Unfortunately the arc stories after the national championships decline its quality, giving this manga a moderate ending.

I almost dropped this after reading the first 2 chapters because it was so generic, but decided I should at least finish the volume. You know, since it's supposed to be a pretty good sports manga/anime and all. Also because I've dropped too many manga after reading only the first chapter or two, and a series really does need more of a chance than that.

Eyeshield 21 is a sports manga about American football.

AMERICA! FUCK YEAH
USA! USA! USA!

I don't really care too much about the sport myself. I had some fun playing it in grade 10 but that is the cap of my interest in it. But like I said in the introduction paragraph, this here is a bit of a modern classic in the sports manga genre, so being the sports lit connoisseur that I am you know I had to give it a go.

Just like what I got from the first two chapters, it's still a pretty generic sports manga, but it does also have some interesting elements that keep me wanting to read more. The main character is actually pretty interesting--besides being generically wimpy--and the supporting cast is also pretty fun. I enjoyed how the MC actually wanted to be the team manager instead of a player, but because of the evil insane captain of the football team he's forced to play instead. That's technically a spoiler I guess, but in actuality it's extremely obvious that of course the super fast MC would play. I also like how they made his identity a secret, because that will definitely cause some juicy misunderstandings and awkward scenarios.

If the American football aspect wasn't American enough for you, the art makes it feel even more American because of Yusuke Murata's cartoony style. I'm actually so torn on the art. The cartoon-yness has me shook but at the same time I love it. Especially the cartoony way the bodies are drawn. I read manga and expect to see a specific style of art, so when that expectation is subverted it's jarring, and not in a good way. But by the time I got to the end of the volume I got more used to it. I'm actually now looking forward to reading more of this series specifically so I can see more of the art.

YAHAAA!!!

Do you know Kobayakawa Sena? How about Eyeshield 21 from the Deimon Devil Bats?

Eyeshield 21 is a manga about american football written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. It became an anime on Aril 6, 2005 and ended with 145 episodes on March 19, 2008. This anime is sponsored by NFL Japan and aired in countries like korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The story revolves around high school student Kobayakawa Sena who loves football and has a incredible talent when it comes to running, he has an intense agility. He had a remarkable talent in running because of bullies. In his younger days he was taught by his friend Riku to run away from bullies that is why he developed his talent. This caught the eye of Deimon High School Football Captain and quarterback Yoichi Hiruma who forces Sena to become the team’s running back. Hiruma and his friend Kurita who is also a member of the Devil bats swore to be in the Christmas bowl so they try hard to get teammates who are interested in playing American football.

Slowly but surely the team recruited potential players such as Taro Raimon a baseball player who excels in catching, he became the team’s wide reciver and the so-called Ha-Ha Brothers who became the defensive linemen. The Deimon Devil Bats made a mark to the people watching them and made rivalry in other schools like the Ojo White Knights.
Sena and the rest of the Devil Bats successfully entered the Chrismas Bowl which they have dreamed off and competed against the American football team led by Panther.
The series concludes with Sena becoming the captain of the Deimon Devil Bats when Hiruma and Kurita go off to college. All of the main characters are shown in the final chapter to be in college or playing amateur-league football while maintaining a job.

Watch the anime and read the manga, so you can experience the thrill of this American Football anime.

With the upcoming NFL season (2017) a few weeks away, there are more suitable reads than Eyeshield 21 but the humor and sports action make for a potent combination.

Eyeshield 21 is how a Japanese manga creator views the eponymous American sport of football. This reader isn't here for the crash course in sports rules, but it does make for a soft introduction into the nuances of the sport. This reader is here for the action and the comedy.

The first seven chapters comprise the first volume and contains the first full game for our bunch of misfit characters. The translation is a bit iffy, par for the course for an amateur scan and translation, and the art is a bit dense at time. But it's still a fun read and this reader is moving on to the next volume.

ini komik sports yang jadi favorite gue,

meskipun pada awalnya gue gak ngelirik pertama kali karena gambar karakternya gak cakep (note : gue selalu lihat dari gambar-gambar karakternya cakep apa kagak :P) tapi pas lihat sosok Hiruma si akuma yang jenius itu gue mulai tertarik dan nggak kecewa baca komiknya. .

So, my favorite genre of anime/manga is sports manga, as weird as that might seem to even myself - because I honestly don't care about any sort of sports at all in real life, but make it fake and it's my favorite. Eyeshield 21 is no exception - and, actually, the only sports manga that I've really read - oh, I've read a few chapters here and there of Kuroko no Basket, or Kenichi: the Mightiest Disciple, but I've never really sat down and just read the manga until Eyeshield 21.

The story follows Sena, a small, oft-picked on boy who... accidentally ends up joining the football team. American football team. It feels weird to say 'American football' because I'm American, but it's stressed so much in-volume that I just sort of have to say it that way. And, like all sports anime/manga, it's so fun. It's so stressful, sometimes - though not really in this first volume - because even though nobody's probably going to die (I'd watch my step around Hiruma, though), it's just tense .

I did read the first ninety or so chapters of this online before purchasing this, so this was sort-of a re-read for me - but really, I just remembered which characters I love and I get to look forward to watching them become those characters. People like Ishimaru, who I really only love because his name is Ishimaru. Shin, because of the eyebrows and the cute and the seriousness and I love. Jumonji, who isn't actually given his name in this volume and who develops into such a great person that I also love.

But, really - sports manga is the best. And even if you don't think you'll be into it, you're probably wrong.

This book is about an average boy named Sena who runs errands for his sister all the time. Sena had just got into a new high school with a new start without any friend so his sister convinced him to go to clubs and in the end the football club was the one best suited for him. Since Sena had been running a lot of errands he had superb speed and it really gave him the advantage with the football team for a runner.
I can connect this to many people because everyone will do one thing they wont like in their life time and then when their done with it they can benefit from it, like school, many kids hate the idea of it and they think its torturing but it is going to pay off when they finish and not have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.
I rate this book a 4 because the storyline is great but there is a ton of books just like this where one special prodigy arises and everything in the plot is going to revolve around him or her.

Guy can run fast so they make him join the football team, with the plan of giving him the ball and having him run fast (because he is a guy that can run fast). Interesting decision to make a team sport where the team should have a dozen members and instead we have three- run fast boy, fat boy, and gun boy. Thrilling characters! So unique!

At least there are, like, 2 or 3 pages that look pretty. Like those two times you get to see run fast boy's POV where he decides where to run fast, or that single time the dust made him look like some megazord spawning or something. That's 3 pages of pretty art! Bless.

Eyeshield 21 features all the clichés you can expect from a sports manga, yet it's executed so well that it doesn't really matter. The artwork is awesome, the pacing is great and the characters are diverse, interesting and have developed personalities and motivations. Seriously, Hiruma Youichi alone is a good reason to read this manga.

Cute art, but the story didn't grab me. I am reading so many sports manga that Eyeshield 21 has serious competition, and this volume fell short. I love the action scenes when Sena is running, usually away from something. But the eyeshield? That's too silly, even for me. It's like Clark Kent and the glasses. Everyone is too unobservant to realize that the little team manager disappears and the little runner dude appears, just when he's needed the most. Nah, I am just not buying that.

Belum ada 5 halaman udah ketawa gara-gara Hiruma 😂

Kangennn banget sama mereka.

This manga is “EYESHIELD 21” this is American football manga. Actually, I didn’t know about American football before reading this manga . But I could enjoy this manga.

Of course, you can enjoy without the knowledge. This manga makes us excited without the knowledge. And you can get the knowledge of American football. I wanted to play American football. You maybe wanted to ply American football too.

I recommend this manga. This is so exciting. I hope that you will read.

This is the story about to be a hero even though the person was bullied.
The protagonist named “Sena”. He is nothing special besides he can run so fast because of bulling. And he finally finds the field to use his talent.

I feel like sports manga is a little bit like romance novels and quite a few other categories of media, in that the familiarity with the formula does seem to be part of the appeal. If you pick up a romance, you expect a series of relationship-growing moments that culminate in a HEA. In sports manga, it’s about going from zeroes to heroes, and eventually winning the (insert sports championship here).

And the formula for sports manga had not worked for me before. I’ve poked at a few different sports manga, and I’ve had better luck at sticking with anime where you can sometimes see the athleticism involved. But for years, this was the one I wanted to dig up and give a real honest effort. The art was wonderfully dynamic, and it was about American football (and I was curious to see a Japanese take on this sport). But for a long while, every time I checked out the manga sections of bookstores, they’d have a few random later volumes, but never the first.

But finally, I managed to nab the first three volumes. And yeah, I’m super glad I did. It’s made its way into my favorites, almost entirely on the strength of characters that I REALLY like.

Eyeshield 21 is about a young man, Sena Kobayakawa, who finds a curiosity, and then a love, for American football – and how it gives him confidence and friends along the way. He’s every downtrodden hard-luck main character ever, but he comes across as genuinely likable right from the start. He’s friendly and honest and well-meaning, and he helps people wherever he can. He’s cut from the same cloth that Izuku Midoria would be years later. But he keeps running into people happy to take advantage of him, and not even the momma bear instincts of his best friend Mamori can protect him from it.

But one person Mamori DOES specifically warn Sena away from is Hiruma, a true master manipulator and, coincidentally, captain of the “football team.” But it’s too late – he’s already on Hiruma’s radar.

I love Hiruma – mostly because he’s not a character I expect to see in a role like this. He’s a scheming, manipulative bully who will do just about anything to get what he wants – and the mind of a Xanatos to back it up. He almost feels like the big bad of someone else’s story. And that’s the majority of what we see of him at first, making him a less pleasant addition at first. He definitely grew on me over the first quarter or so of the story. But his lone teammate in the football club softens things, and makes the delay of Hiruma’s less-bad points work.

Kurita is the massive center for the Demon Bats and the most genuinely kind, helpful person one could ever ask for. He’s a big teddy bear who desperately wants to play real football, but just as much, he wants to SHARE football. He wants teammates who love the sport as much as the does. And the interplay between these three really made the heard of the early going, for me. Because they’re all three very different – Hiruma conniving and laser-focused, Kurita intense but friendly and Sena dedicated but self effacing – but the way they all come together and the things they bring to the team are fun to watch for me.

There are other things to like, as well – you can see the building blocks of future teammates and interesting opponents here and there, and if you’re familiar with football then a lot of it feels very familiar. And there’s just an undeniable enthusiasm in the story itself – this is a story about football told by someone who loves football himself and it really bleeds through.

Sena Kobayakawa has always been a shy and easily bullied kid. Good thing his older (female) friend Mamori has protected him throughout his childhood, though being in different schools before made that hard. But now that he's going to her school, she's clucking over him and trying to protect him again, encouraging him to make friends by joining clubs (but she issues a stiff warning: stay away from anything to do with a guy called Hiruma!). Sena meets a large student named Kurita, who shares his woes over never being able to get enough people to join the American football club, and sympathetic Sena agrees to join as manager if it will help kind Kurita out. But when sleazy bullies target Sena yet again, he runs from their abuse and shows his incredible running skills--which are accidentally seen by none other than Hiruma, who turns out to be the American football club's quarterback. After some blackmail-laden recruiting for their upcoming game--because they have to have enough players or they will be disqualified--Hiruma wants Sena to play on the team, not just do manager duties. Mamori is horrified that he's associating with the school's devil, so Hiruma decides to protect Sena's identity by making him wear a green eyeshield on his helmet so no one can tell who he is (and then other sports clubs won't be able to track him down and recruit him). Will his "golden legs" win the day? Or will Mamori step in to protect Sena once again?

This is a shounen manga--a book aimed at boys--but as with most sports stories, there is exquisite focus on the team's relationship with each other and their desire to win and do their best. It's interesting that the story incorporates a girl who protects a boy, and on top of that she's very intelligent, which turns out to be intriguing even to genius Hiruma. And speaking of Hiruma, he's an incredible part of why the manga is what it is. He's terrible, not at all likable if you knew him in real life, not above hurting and harassing the people he allies with, but wow, is he fun to read about. You love watching him get the upper hand and how quickly he figures out how to manipulate people. The art features exaggerated "types" fairly often--Kurita, an overweight and strong lineman, is basically drawn as a huge blimp, and Hiruma looks like an outright demon. Some of the characters they play on the field are stereotypes too; in this first volume, they play the Koigahama Cupids and all the players have girlfriends and are beautiful prissy-boys. By the end, you really get invested in Sena staying on the team and you wonder what will happen next--what's the future of the Deimon Devilbats? It's not about winning--it's about the journey--but Hiruma will tell you a different story.

Eyeshield 21: The Boy With the Golden Legs is the beginning of a series written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata and it's a sports manga centering on Sena Kobayakawa and his tenure on an American Football team. This tankōbon collects the first seven chapters of this on-going series.

Sena Kobayakawa has just managed to enter high school and on his first day, three students known collectively as the "Hah Brothers" bully him. To beat Sena Kobayakawa without witnesses, they enter the American football clubhouse, but soon a club member, Ryokan Kurita, appears. His size and strength make the Hah Brothers run away. He then invites Sena Kobayakawa to join the Deimon Devil Bats, the American Football Team, and he accepts to be the manager.

Later on, the bullies chase Sena Kobayakawa again and unbeknownst to him, he is seen by Yoichi Hiruma, the club captain. Impressed, Yoichi Hiruma makes him join the club as a running back named "Eyeshield 21" with an eyeshield protector helmet.

This tankōbon is written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Yusuke Murata. For the most part, I really liked the story. It is the typical premise of an unsuspected wimpy teen – one that is bullied for most of his life finds his cause in a sport – American Football. Murata's illustrations were beautifully rendered a tad unrefined, but I believe that this series is an earlier work of his, which shows his growth.

All in all, Eyeshield 21: The Boy With the Golden Legs is a wonderful beginning to a new series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

This series currently holds the title of My Mostest Favoritest Manga. I've grown up in a household where Autumn Saturdays are already booked as college football days. Football has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, and the fact that I have actually found a graphic novel that goes along with that very theme is incredible.
The artwork in this series starts out a little... inexperienced, but rest assured it improves dramatically. The characters from Sena to Shin are so filled with depth and personality that I have grown to love all of them (especially Hiruma), and I must say that it is definitely a series worth owning. There are guns and fighting for the male readers, and a hint of love for the female readers, and of course there's football for me.

5 STARS! :)

(NOTE: This is a review for the whole manga.)

Sena Kobayakawa has been bullied ever since he was young. He has this aura around him that makes him seem weak and targeted by delinquents. He was cornered but the urge to protect his childhood friend is stronger. Someone discovered his talent as a running back of an American football team. This story took a long route of explaining how a lie turn out to be the truth and the Deimon devil bats' hope to reach the Christmas Bowl. I love the ending of this manga! By facing strong opponents, they found new friends and opportunity to grow and mature as an American Football player. A story of how one should pursue his own dreams and be able to sacrifice to reach whatever you wanted to be.

2024 reread : I still love this. Gotta say that the art improves in latter chaps in my opinion.

Maybe a reread of this is exactly what I need. I love these characters so much and their struggles never fail to get me motivated. This first book just sets up the main conflict (going to the Christmas Bowl) and the main characters (Sena, Hiruma, Kurita and Mamori) so it's not too hard hitting. But I just want to pick up the next one right now to see them all become a team. So that's exactly what I'm going to do.
(Plus I get a nice refresher about american football because I am not american and this manga is the only reason I understand anything about this sport)

Rating for all 333 chapters.

Had so much fun reading this one. Great characters, nice pacing and enjoyable battles. It's not perfect but it was very good up until the World Cup arc. The final arc was so disappointing and that's the reason why I had to shave off a star. It should've ended with the Christmas Bowl and in my mind, that will always be the final arc. I've never been interested in American Football but because I was reading this one, I ended up watching football highlights in Youtube.

Yappari, sports mangas are so much fun!
