If a manga has an impeccable enough aesthetic, I’m willing to excuse a lot.
Not that I’ve too much to excuse here—I actually enjoy the story so far. I’m pleasantly surprised.
Usually, I’m not a big fan of reincarnation stories or stories that revolve around a seriously OP character. But, this one dies a good job of creating context for both plot devices. Also, our MMC Hiram is actually cool. There’s really no “try-hardness” to his character—which allows this story to sidestep some of the more problematic aspects of this genre.
Also, I just really want to emphasize how well illustrated this story is. The art style is very appealing—both crisp but fluid. The character designs are—again—so aesthetic. Further, it’s clear the creators know how to craft a compelling manga. The panel-work and story boarding are really well done.
Do I wish that the only adult female character in the series had a less sexualized design? Yes, of course. Her clothing and how she’s portrayed are disappointing to say the least. There’s no good reason to ever sexualized a female character’s pain—and we get that BIG TIME when Lumiere is shot by an arrow. (WTF is with that pose?) Inexcusable.
But, beyond the gratuitous and unnecessary exploitation of a female character—which I almost ignore at this because I’ve become so desensitized to seeing it, in manga especially—I can’t deny that I did like the rest of this story.
I’m willing to give this series a few more volumes~
This series is great. I’m just getting to this because I found it on SquareEnix’s website before it published (I read Cherry Magic and Mr. Villain and was wondering if they had anything else I’d like) but I wasn’t sure about it so I was waiting for the library to get a copy. The library now has up to volume three with volume four on the way. Yay!
It was worth the wait. I have finished the first three volumes.
The artwork is fantastic. I love the details, the fashion style, the battles and the magic. You can definitely feel the energy in each page. Of course everyone is drawn hot, especially Hiram (not complaining). I like that Hiram has a daughter and finding her is a big part of the story. So far he’s collecting daughters which is nice. I’m just not into the harem stories.
I like the story as well. Hiram is the hero, he’s a good guy - fair when he needs to be and cool under pressure. Yeah he’s overpowered and no one’s given him a run for his money since the start of the story but who knows how the rest of the series will go. It’s a fun action fantasy that was adapted from light novels. It’s a quick read. Every volume has short story included. Those stories are cute.
My complaint is that Lumiere, an elf princess and Hiram’s “daughter” and mentee, wears high heels in battle! Can we get past that!?! Also she’s pretty heavy through the chest for her body but that’s typical unfortunately. Otherwise love the art. Lumiere’s slightly “born sexy yesterday” but they did show that she’s been pretty sheltered and overlooked in her society. So it makes sense that Hiram is a mature presence/mentor to her. I assume any demon queens in the story will be drawn in super sexy bondage style fits. I’m hoping the artist goes against the stereotype. But we’ll see.
3.5 🌟 Volumes 1 starts off with Hiram—The God-slaying Demon King—in battle with the demon god who ultimately kills him, though upon his death Hiram casts a reincarnation spell that allows him to be reborn 500 years into the future as a human. Upon his rebith, Hiram meets an elf princess, Lumiere and a cute adorable dragon, Jorm. Hiram essentially takes both Jorm and Lumiere under his wing—Jorm vows to serve Hiram and Lumiere wishes to be mentored in magic under him while simultaneously teaching him what has happened over the past 500 years while he has been dead. While reacclimating to the present Hiram vows to search for his long-lost adoptive daughter while in the hunt to once and for all kill the Demon God and reclaim his place at the top of the chain.
The first volume sets the world up nicely with quite a lot of information dumping; it’s got a pretty solid world building and interesting lore surrounding the gods as well as the magic system dynamics.
Solidly average reincarnation fantasy but!! What makes it stand out is the MC is an adult and wants to find his adoptive daughter as well as kill this demon god guy.
It’s got a pretty solid and interesting world build surrounding its gods and magic too.
3.75☆ Quite a bit of info dumping in this first installment. It's mainly giving us the history and setting the scene for the real story to begin, which makes it hard to rate. The art style is really cool but during action scenes it can be quite difficult to understand exactly what's being shown.
Demon king Hiram is hell-bent on slaying they demon god, but he'll have to do it in another lifetime. He's reincarnated 500 years into the future with his memories and most of his talent, but he has to relearn casting magic and figure out his new surroundings. He meets an elf princess named Lumiere who helps him acclimate, but he still has his mind set on becoming the most powerful demon in the history of the world. Another fun take on the rebirth trope.
