BFF
1985 is going to be Amani’s year.A past tragedy put to bed, her firefighting career on the rise, and her best friend Gideon by her side. What can go wrong? Everything. Gideon is concealing two secrets that have the power to shatter their bond. The first is one he’s struggled to live with for over a century—he’s a lycanthrope. The second, is that his control over the curse is slipping.Despite Gideon’s attempts to hide his condition, Amani learns what he is—in the most visceral way imaginable. As a rift forms between them, Gideon realizes the beast he’s caged for nearly a decade wants to tear its way out of him—and he’s powerless to stop it.Desperate to save him, Amani enlists the aid of Razvan; a handsome and irreverent psychic with a few secrets of his own. Beneath the moon’s fiery glow, the wolf's savage impulses quicken Chicago’s pulse, and the lives Amani has vowed to safeguard are thrown into unthinkable peril. Faced with an impossible choice between loyalty and morality, Amani must risk everything to keep her best friend from being consumed by the beast—forever.

My first five stars of the year, and not even a month in 🎉.
Please, I hope to read a follow up to this, as I've got to know what happens next. I could barely put this down.
Amani and Gideon are great characters, strong willed, morally dubious, but sympathetic. Razvan was great too, I just wish we'd gotten more of his backstory and perspective. I love Amari's dad, he's so entertaining in the scenes we get of him.
This is a gory book to, but in like the best ways, and I'm impressed with the body count. It could have been so easy to keep any kills to one or two characters, or even just unlikable characters, but Lucinda Duvall went there.

Definitely didn't go in expecting so many drama elements, but was pleasantly surprised. It was a sharp juxtaposition against the generous (but plot appropriate) levels of violence and horror.
Not sure why I expected a story that was softer around the edges (maybe it was the cover), but this one punches you in the teeth. Can't wait for a sequel to this one!
