A secret passageway. A tortured ghost. A love that transcends time.
On All Hallows' Eve, Lady Diana Starr is poised to uncover a lost zoological treasure when an unfortunate steam accident threatens to destroy the chance of a lifetime. Locked in a race with her arch nemesis, she must toss aside all decorum and break rules-lest he destroy her dreams. Again.
Trapped in the past and doomed to re-live the night of his murder, Lord Leo Wraxall awakens at sunset. This year, something is different. Might an unexpected time traveler who arrives at his hidden workshop help alter his cursed fate?
But destiny refuses to relax its grip; the stars cannot be realigned. As adversaries threaten to snatch away a final thread of hope, can Diana and Leo forge a new path into the future? Or will they be haunted for eternity by what might have been?
Though Anne Renwick holds a Ph.D. in biology and greatly enjoyed tormenting the overburdened undergraduates who were her students, fiction has always been her first love. Today, she writes steampunk romance, placing a new kind of biotech in the hands of mad scientists, proper young ladies and determined villains.
Diana is an academic with a focus on a career, not marriage. She wants the collection of snails believed to be hidden in Barcote Hall by the current lord’s decease uncle, Lord Leo Wraxall. When the All Hallows’ Eve ball is cancelled at the last minute, Diana decides to break into the manor under the cover of darkness. Imagine her surprise when it appears that she’s traveled back in time and meets Leo in a secret lab.
With A Ghost in Amber, Ms. Renwick adds a paranormal element to her already amazing Elemental Steampunk world. Even though there is time travel and a ghost, the story stays grounded in Ms. Renwick’s trademark scientific/steampunk world. I enjoy how both Leo and Diana use observation and their own knowledge to theorize what has transpired, in turn encouraging me to use my own deductive skills to try and guess as to how there will be a happy ending for this couple.
And make no mistake, A Ghost in Amber is a romance, complete with an HEA. Diana and Leo feel an immediate pull and strong physical attraction, but it’s the meeting of their minds that creates the most appeal. Neither ever wanted a spouse nor planned to marry, but suddenly both see the merits of a union. Yet, there is that pesky problem of Leo dying 23 years before the night they meet. I will say that their HEA is non-traditional, and I’m not one hundred percent clear on what goes down, but I still loved their journey.
Overall, I really enjoyed this paranormal take on Ms. Renwick’s fabulous steampunk world, just in time for the Halloween season! Leo and Diana are meant to be and so perfect for one another, and I enjoyed watching them get the chance to find love.

This new and utterly engaging tale by the talented Anne Renwick is a bit of a departure for her. With only passing mention of steampunk elements the focus is on time travel and the paranormal. In this case, the paranormal element is a passionate, sexy, smart and handsome ghost of the male persuasion. Our heroine is also smart and passionate who unwittingly travels back in time to save him and unexpectedly fall in love.
Renwick’s signature style of science-based stories continues with this story. This time out, glowing snails are the zoological focus of our hero and heroine allowing them to bond and explore their love for each other. Rounding out the story we have treachery, midnight trysts, two nasty villains, hidden passageways plus a secret lab.
Anne Renwick shows a real talent for writing gloriously steamy love scenes, several of which occur in this book.
This is a standalone story which is a shorter length so it’s a perfect starting point to try out Renwick and for her confirmed fans, this is a lovely addition to Renwick’s Elemental Steampunk series that you don’t want to miss.
Highly recommended.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion.
A GHOST IN AMBER, Tales#5 is a fairly new novella in Anne Renwick’s creative Elemental Steampunk series. AGIA is a Time Travel romance in a Steampunk world, a series I always watch for the next release.
MY RATING GUIDE: 4.5 Stars. A GHOST IN AMBER was imaginative and fun with a bit of science and spice. I continue to enjoy this series with its lovely cover art.
England, 1885 ~ FMC Lady Diana Starr at 25 yrs has been socially ruined through the deceitfulness of a dishonorable rake. Following the fallout of that episode, Diana became disfavored among society and now spends her time quietly pursuing scientific mysteries, specifically the world of mollusks. MMC Lord Leo Wraxall was a seasoned military doctor, an adventurer and a budding scientist. He travelled the world and collected diverse zoological specimens formulating incredible hypotheses. But Lord Wraxall’s revolutionary medical ideas died with him when, still in his prime, he suddenly and mysteriously died 23yrs ago while experimenting in his country estate laboratory. One evening on Oct 31st, exactly twenty-three years after the death of Wraxall, Lady Diana locates and creeps into Lord Wraxall’s vacated country estate laboratory. It is in Wraxall’s laboratory that Lady Diana hopes to locate, and later publish, Lord Wraxall’s forgotten progressive scientific notes, thereby regaining a fraction of the respect she once commanded as a respectable Lady. But in the depths of Lord Wraxall’s cellar laboratory, Lady Diana discovers a strange and dark mystery she never anticipated.
What I Liked ~ 1) The main characters are unusual and intelligent. I was pulled into their world from the beginning until the end. 2) A GHOST IN AMBER moves quickly with an interesting Time Travel premise. 3) I always enjoy the world Renwick creates for her Elemental series - the unique cast of characters, their fascinating careers, the background of the Lister Scientific Institute, the scientific facts inside each book, the imaginative settings and plotting. 4) This is an intelligent, complex, creative, imaginative, suspense-filled series. And it still manages to be fun! 5) I was originally drawn to the Elemental Steampunk series by the eye-catching book cover art. I wasn’t even sure what “Steampunk” meant. I continue reading because the books are consistently delightful and entertaining. The covers are still lovely!
Renwick’s website posts her suggested reading order yet the books can be enjoyed as standalone titles with no cliffhangers. I prefer reading the books as suggested because main characters often appear in later books. I love the creativeness and science is this series and look forward to reading her next release.
Anne Renwick’s Steampunk Elemental novels has become a favorite series. I heartedly recommend A GHOST IN AMBER to readers who enjoy Steampunk or Historical Romance, Historical or British based Murder Mysteries, Proximity-Danger novels, Fantasy-Science based novels, novels with unique characters/settings, intricate plotting and HEAs - novels that open up possibilities and ask “What Ifs?” as they entertain.
READER CAUTION ~ Not recommended to readers who prefer Clean fiction. PROFANITY - No. I recall none. SEXUAL SITUATIONS - Yes. Intimacy between the MCs occurs. VIOLENCE - PG. This involves a mystery element but isn’t dark or graphic in detail. Other - An paranormal element occurs in this story. It isn’t dark or graphic.
Diana is an academic with a focus on a furthering her career and outshining her male nemesis.
With a pinch of ghosts, a wisp of time travel, and a whole lot of passion, Ms. Renwick adds a paranormal element to her already amazing Elemental Steampunk world, creating the perfect read for the Halloween season.
Even though I’d read the book previously, I couldn’t recall how the couple gets their HEA, especially as time begins to run out, creating a lot of tension and excitement. I honestly think I enjoyed their story more this second time around, comforted that I know it will work out, but still caught up in the action and drama. Diana and Leo feel an immediate pull and strong physical attraction, but it’s the meeting of their minds that creates the most appeal. Neither ever wanted a spouse nor planned to marry, but suddenly both see the merits of a union. However, with Leo dead in Diana’s time, how can it work out?
Narration: The story is shared via the alternating third person POVs of Diana and Leo. Matthews performs the sections from Leo’s POV, while Hunter voices Diana’s POVs. Both narrators use British accents of the upper echelon and are well-suited for their main characters. Hunter’s Diana has a sharp, upbeat voice, sounding smart and to-the-point. Matthews’s voice for Leo is masculine but it has a whispery/soft quality. Both narrators adjust for gender and add just enough emotion to their performance to bring the characters to life.
Overall, I really enjoyed A Ghost in Amber, and I recommend the book to romance readers for the Halloween season. Leo and Diana are meant to be and so perfect for one another, and I enjoyed watching them get the chance to find love.
My Ratings: Story: B+ Narration: B

Series Info/Source: This is the fifth book in the Steampunk Elemental Tales series. I bought this ebook for my Kindle.
Thoughts: This was a fun short read that takes place on Halloween. It’s a short story about a woman who loves to study snails and her hunt for a lost cache of them. Surprisingly, she ends up running into the ghost of Leo Wraxall, the very man whose lost collection she was looking for. The two hit it off instantly and they start to try to work out how to break the curse on Leo.
This book definitely suffers from insta love/lust, but it kind of works because Leo and Diana obviously have a ton of interests in common right from the get-go. The sex scenes are well written and the romace is very sweet even if it does feel a bit sudden.
I love how there is a great mystery and some fun science thrown into the story as well. Renwick does an amazing job blending biological sciences into her series and I love that I learn something new every time I read one of her books. I just really enjoy that these are sciency reads but also lovely, guilty pleasures. This is a perfect blend of steampunk, mystery, supernatural, science and romance.
This was easy to read and the writing flowed well. I really enjoy Renwick’s writing style and always look forward to a new book or story from her.
My Summary (4/5): Overall this was a fun Halloween steampunk romance read. I love how Renwick blends science and cryptozoology in with steampunk/romance elements. I would recommend to those who enjoy steampunk romance reads and don’t mind a bit of sciency talk in them as well. I greatly look forward to Renwick’s next book!
I love this world so very much. It’s the only place I know that so skillfully blends science fantasy with science fact, that every time I surface from a story I’m shocked to discover that the technological and medical marvels within aren’t a reality as they’re portrayed in the book I’ve just finished. I’m so glad to see that Diana and Leo continue the author’s tradition of pairing a smart and spunky heroine who isn’t about to be anybody’s damsel in distress with a hero who happens to be noble, capable, and vulnerable. They face challenges that require wit and intelligence more than any physical strength. And the villains they encounter aren’t in the least bit typical. My only regret is that this book is over already. I would happily spend many more hours getting to know Diana and Leo and learning more about the rest of the breakthroughs they discover. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.
A Ghost in Amber can best be described as a historical love story with time travel that takes place on All Hallow's Eve. While it didn't include as much in the steampunk space as Ms. Renwick's other books in this series, it does feature an independent, scientifically minded, spunky heroine as the female lead. Lady Diana Starr and Lord Leo Wexhall are brought together through unusual circumstances that include the discovery of a hidden lab, time travel, and a shared interest in glowing snails. Things get really complicated when Diana learns that Leo is the ghost of the man whose research she has been seeking out to advance her scientific career. He also is the unfortunate victim of a curse that makes him relive the night of his death every All Hallow's Eve. Can the two of them bring their heads together to figure out how to break the curse and get Diana back to her time to save Leo's legacy?
As soon as you start an Anne Renwick book, you find yourself in the middle of Victorian England, and comfortably settled before the end of the first chapter, due to her extremely descriptive writing and the atmosphere she captures while drawing you into the story. Anne brings this unusual love story set on All Hallows' Eve to life with lots of emotion and passion, while her hero and heroine Lady Diana Starr and Lord Leo Wraxall, connect with an immediate chemistry between them that sizzles from the moment they meet. Anne manages to wrap zoological science and gastropods around this atmospheric story while still making it thoroughly enjoyable. Can Diana save Leo from a re-occurring nightmare.... only time will tell. A great read.
This author can do amazing things with a classic, almost worn out trope. There are many stories where ladies meet the ghostly love of their lives. So far Diana is the only lady hunting snails rather than love or justice. This headstrong yet compassionate would-be scholar still has the backbone though not social propriety to take steps to bring about justice and love when the opportunity falls into her hands. I enjoyed Diana and Leo's unconventional courtship and the unlikely twist that gives them their HEA. Definitely worthy of Halloween!
I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have this tendency lately to request books with elements I’m not fond of. This is one such book. I am not a fan at all of time-traveling, ones about the romance (like it but must have suspense as a good part of it), ones in the past, and steampunk, but, again, the blurb just spoke to me and I had to read it. This is a delightful book about Diana and Leo finding their way to each other while sharing a passion for research. The love story is heartbreaking, well-written, and full of love, and it is sure to please everyone who loves this type of story. Give it a try if you are fan of any of the genres mentioned above. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I've read all of Renwick's backlog and I have to be honest, this one was just weird. I'm not a huge fan of the straight magic elements that were included in the storyline. I should know better than to pick up her Elemental Steampunk Tales in general, since I don't think I've loved any of her novellas. I'm not a huge fan of novellas in general, but hers are really not developed enough for me to enjoy. I think she has to spend so much time with world building/creating a plot that works that having a love story take place in such a short amount of time is just not believable.
I usual describe Anne Renwick's books as Steampunk Espionage, but this one was far more time travel love story. There's still quite a high science component as scientists of mollusks discover each other across a 23 year gap, but this felt move love story than adventure. Not that the change was bad, just different. The story is still in the same world, the heroine still strong willed and the hero (heroes?) still in love with her mind and skills as well as her body. A wonderful read.
I have loved and thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series of Steampunk novels, novellas and short stories. Anne is able to weave a great story with adventure and alternate, but realistic technologies and medicines. The characters are always searching for their best selves and are aided in this endeavour when they find a companion willing to support them. The connections to the Lister Institute allows the stories to be linked, while being stand alone works.
I just loved this story - the scientific jargon mixed with the Victorian verbosity, the mystical mixed with the romantic. I particularly liked how the ending surprised me; I couldn’t figure out how it would end, much less how Leo and Diana would get their happy ending. A simply terrific book.
And in a steam punk setting. Love the heroines in this series, each is intelligent, resourceful, and brave. The heroes respect intelligent women, even in these Victorian times. And the bad guys are truly evil. Loved this fantasy. I cannot wait for Quinn's story.
Steampunk is a new genre for me, and this was a really fun introduction.
I loved the seamless blend of history, science, technology, and romance. There was a bit of mystery and paranormal, romance, and action. I loved the fact that the study of snails was a big part of the story line. Leo and Diana were fun together and played off each other well.
Anne Renwick does it again with this Elemental Steampunk Tale. Whimsy, love for the ages, and a tiny snail in amber. Only Renwick can combine these elements into an outrageous and wondrous offering.
I’ve never thought snails romantic before, but the author weaves such a magical romantic spell throughout the tale that even snails and their slime seem romantic. A great read and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
A Ghost in Amber: A Steampunk Romance (An Elemental Steampunk Tale Book 5) Anne Renwick A different Halloween Tale There is always something new to learn in each of the authors books! Her books are of the sciencey Steampunk and Romance kind, which I love! Great book.
Ok, this was a little different from the other books in the series. It takes place on All Hallows’ Eve when the present (in 1885) brushes against the past (a generation earlier). Diana Starr is a sharp science minded young lady who wants to be accepted and respected by her peers in the science community. Her Zoological interest is in snail shell formations and fossils. She learns of the work done 20 years ago by Lord Leo Wraxall, which sits forgotten since his untimely death, and wants to bring his field notes and shell collection to light. Lord Wraxall, the current Lord of Batcote Hall and nephew of Lord Leo Wraxall, has cancelled his party due to a life threatening accident. He is heir to Leo and the one Diana needs permission from to publish his Uncle’s work. Her rival, Hector Godfrey, has used her and helped to ruin her work and reputation. He is a jerk and is determined to win even if it means cheating or killing. Lord Leo Wraxall, the dead Uncle, is a spirit who relives the night of his death… every Oct. 31st. The story begins here. The end goal is to keep the Nephew alive. Time travel, for one special night is involved. I enjoyed it all and am now going to go back for another trip thru the book!
This is a nice and different Halloween story. Something new and enjoyable. Diane is scientifically interested in snail shell formations and fossils. She has a rival who wants to ruin her findings and her reputation. The story has a bit of everything in it...science, time travel, mystery and romance. I really enjoyed this book, there is always something new to learn, along with a bit of romance to make you happy. I do recommend you read and enjoy this story.
