It’s almost Christmas and, in a ballroom just beyond the cobbled streets of Edinburgh’s Old Town, the most important event of the year is taking place – the Foxtrot Oscars. Mrs Hubbard’s whole senior citizenship has been building towards the moment she and her Douglas take the Over Sixties Swingers Cup. What could possibly go wrong, dearies?
When the Losers Club friends arrive to cheer the couple on, they expect a weekend of shopping, dancing and binge-watching all the TV programmes they can’t get back home. Instead, they find Mrs Hubbard missing and blood on the dancefloor.
With the city gridlocked and the police unable to reach them, it is up to Losers Club to investigate. Why would someone snatch the village shopkeeper? And what does it have to do with the contents of Mrs Hubbard’s third biggest handbag?
Helped by friends old and new, the Losers follow the trail through Edinburgh’s darkest places to solve a Jacobite mystery locked in time.
As a child, I loved reading. I spent my life with my nose in a book and, when finally forced back into the real world, I wrote poetry and stories. My hero was Pam Ayres and all I wanted to be when I grew up was a librarian, so that I could be around books all the time.
Of course, life takes you on different paths. Somehow, writing poems and stories got lost along the way. I was too busy partying in London through my twenties then being a mum through my thirties and forties. But on an August morning in 2018, at the tender age of forty-eight, I decided to create a blog on Facebook. Ten minutes later, Growing Old Disgracefully was born and the love of writing came flooding back. Encouraged by my lovely readers, I finally got off my lazy behind, put fingers to keyboard and wrote my first book, The Big Blue Jobbie, then another, and another.
Once more, I have a head full of stories and I can’t wait to tell them to you.
I laughed loudly at many parts of this book. It is the first one in the series that I have read so I shall go back and read what went before. Hilarious characters, a smattering of Jacobite history, a kidnapping and a murder; the perfect recipe for a jolly good read.
A wonderful story, funny (I REALLY liked the ending - I'm still chortling quietly whilst hoping that Sgt Wilson doesn't hear) and over far too quickly. Chocolate and books can be devoured with equal speed around me. Yvonne, if you read this, you are brilliant! See, it's in writing, so it must be true.
Another fun mystery romp with the Losers Club . Just be prepared for unexpected sniggers and laugh out loud explosions! I tried to read it on the train but it was too embarrassing 😳 The characters are so loveable and eccentric- can’t wait for the next adventure . Definitely recommend for a holiday read.
Another great mystery with the usual characters, some old characters return and some new characters. This story was definitely different but very good. Certainly the snow added to a Christmas feel but the rest of the story was more about murder, theft, and the lives of the people in the series.
and that's just the epilogue. I love the losers club series. Sergeant Wilson is absolutely amazing. Her use of language is stunning. Read them all. You won't regret it.
Wasn't fond of the language but the historical references in the second half was mark on for that of an amateur historian that I am. Told myself I would finish it and I did. Not a bad book just not my liking hence the 3 stars.
Interesting to read about Losers Club on the road. A very up to date adventure that licked along, with all the favourite characters. Real ‘edge of the seat’ stuff. I can seriously recommend this book!
The club's cases are getting more dangerous but Penny is getting more clever. Sgt Wilson is still scary but they each seem to be able to handle her easier. Ellie-Minty is going to be a force unto herself soon. I love the characters and their idiosyncrasies. I will keep coming back for more.
Another brilliant story featuring the Losers Club with lots to look forward to in the next book..I can't wait! Yvonne writes a wonderful murder mystery with plenty of suspense, twists and laughs.. Love it! 5*
Omg this series of books get better and better, the characters are brilliantly written and the interaction between them is fantastic. This one is just as witty as the previous books and laughing aloud is a .ust.
As always, a hilarious romp. Martisha's put downs are wondrous! Loved Yvonne's reference to herself as an author. Nice touch. Already downloaded Game of Trust and shall enjoy reading at least the first couple of chapters before bed tonight!
How does Yvonne ever finish her books with all the laughing that must go on? Her play on words is remarkable. My husband wonders why I'm constantly in tears. It couldn't be that funny, could it? Enjoy!
I love these books. The characters are hilarious and so relatable, well most of the time !! If you love a cosy mystery but want something a bit more bawdy than Miss Maple, then these are the books for you.
Absolutely score this series. Love Yvonne Vincent's writing. Wonderful characters great story line, couldn't stop laughing. Looking forward to next book.
I don’t really know these characters so it was a bit of a weird jump in, felt a little overly forced in terms of trying to make it funny but it was ok- Not really the Christmas story I wanted though!
