Spreading Joy: How Joyalukkas Became the World's Favourite Jeweller

Rate this book
Thrissur, on the coast of Kerala, is known as India's 'gold town'. It was here that Puthussery Alukka Joseph Varghese moved into jewellery retail from his umbrella business in the late 1950s. One of his fifteen children, Joy Alukkas, seemed to have inherited his father's entrepreneurial spirit. In 1986, the quest for his personal El Dorado took Joy to the modern 'city of gold': Dubai.

Getting to know the lay of the land, including aspects of procurement, staffing, sales and other regulations, exacerbated by the language barrier, was a challenge that could dampen any entrepreneur's spirit, but Joy persisted and opened the first 'Alukkas' jewellery store in Abu Dhabi, followed soon after by another in Dubai. Just as business was taking off, the Gulf War broke out in 1990, disrupting every aspect of life and forcing Joy to return to India. Not only did a resilient Joy go back to the Gulf some months later, but he also re-established the Alukkas footprint, opening stores within and around the UAE. In the next two decades, he expanded his business to eleven countries with more than 160 outlets, and revolutionized the gold-retailing business with innovations such as the use of karatmeter, the first billing so-ware in the industry and board rate for gold price, to mention a few. Throughout the years, the ethos of his business has remained the to be the 'customer's favourite jeweller'.

Spreading Joy not only captures a phenomenal entrepreneurial story, but also provides rare insights into an industry that has predominantly been fragmented and unorganized. Aspiring entrepreneurs, irrespective of the industry they operate in, will find this book of immense value as they build their dream organizations.

“SPREADING JOY” is an autobiography which is written by Joy Alukkas with Thomas Scaria and Nidhi Jain. The relationship of devotion, duty, responsibility, and solemnity with his parents and siblings is like a masterwork. The tale of this book is not about policy, jewelry, or anything else but a personal journey. Joy Alukkas, a young boy from Thrissur, on the coast of Kerala, was underestimated as a child but rose as a successful entrepreneur or “THE WORLD’S FAVORITE JEWELER”. 🌻

The author successfully portrays the pure relationship between the father and son. For Joy, “APPAN” or his father is his idol and Savior. He taught him that life itself teaches everything to a man. His mother was a prominent figure for him. She would scold him for his misdeeds but also make him play childlike sports with cheerful manners. Joy Alukkas who is a risk taker of all time freaked out to take a calculated risk, globalization at one time. Out of 15 siblings Joy Alukkas, a son, a husband, and a father beautifully portrays his manhood by following his father's path. 🌷

With simple language, this book talks about many government policies and entertaining aspects. He makes us understand that one should grab the opportunity when it comes. But one aspect is very bland to talk about - Alukkas’s sibling Paul. He was a brilliant student but could not continue with his subject because according to his father, he was not dealing with their showroom adequately. This is a bit of a confusing statement as well. 🍁

While going through this book, one can forget that this is an autobiography. This book is like a picture book. The pictures in this book are incredible. So this book deserves 4.5 (out of 5)

Joyalukkas is a name that most of us are familiar with, having seen their jewelry stores or being their customers. So, it was interesting and curious for me to read this book and discover the journey which has led to joy in the lives of so many people.

The story of the autobiography begins in Kerala, where a boy dreams of making big on his father’s business. It takes us through the highs and lows which rightfully make Joy Alukkas “The World’s Favorite Jeweler”.

The book is masterfully written and it encapsulates the personal story along with many learnings on the way. The writing is simple and easy to understand. The narrative makes it quite difficult to put it down.

The journey of the man along with information on the importance of gold makes it very informative. As Indians, we are not new to the concept of gold being economically important. What is new here is a inter personal journey undertaken along with gold, with a rare honest touch that makes it special. There is also a lot of forward thinking which is revealed by the author which ultimately help in creating a profitable business and shape the gold and jewelry industry in India.
This is one of the rare books which take us through various periods, is highly personal and honest and packs a punch with all the learnings. Definitely not to be missed!

Hello! We are officially here with the first non fiction review of the year!
This book is an interesting pick. I don't usually read non fiction in the business genre, but I had been intrigued for a while, when I saw this book on some reviews recently. And let's just say that I am glad I started reading it!

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 :
Spreading Joy is an autobiography of a successful entrepreneur, a young boy from Thrissur with a dream of expanding his father's brand into a global phenomenon. Accompanying his life is the evolution of gold, silver, and jewelry in general, during some of the most tumultuous years of Indian and World History. It is an interesting and expansive prose of a businessman who is rightfully advertised as 'The World's Favourite Jeweller'.

Let's move onto the observations now. It will be a lengthy one!

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 :

📚 𝐀𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 :
The book is a tale of a man constantly underestimated in boyhood, transforming into a global icon by nurturing his business acumen to his best, encountering scores of hurdles along the way and valiantly braving them all.
With this journey also lies the journey of gold, a substance that has been fundamental to India's identity and existence since time immemorial, and a simplistic depiction of its evolution in business and the foreign market.
📚 𝐍𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐢𝐚 :
In the beginning of the text, the author weaves a nostalgic picture of India, through the lens of an upper middle class Keralite. From the License-Quota-Permit Raj to the Gold Control Act to the Gulf Wars, it is interesting to see how closely the events well documented in history affected the daily lives of people then.
📚 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 :
An important aspect that is highlighted in the book is the author's capability of adjustment and propensity for taking calculated risks : two things that are important for a business to succeed. Welcoming technology, being the first jeweler in Dubai to have a computerized billing system, immediately buying the X Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer to test gold purity, etc., goes to show how important it is for a businessman to know when to accommodate for generational changes. A lot of the initiatives taken by the author ultimately became mandatory regulatory norms imposed by the government.
📚 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 :
The personal touches really draw the reader close to Joy Alukkas as a person : his growth from man to husband and father, his withdrawal from tobacco, the laborious hours put in various aspects of the business, the dedication towards regular charity, etc., goes to demonstrate the strength and ambition of his character as a whole.
📚 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲 :
The author also demonstrates admirable honesty in painting the picture of his life : he doesn't mince his words when detailing family feuds and other such things, that usually invite some form of involuntary censure. It lends a good deal of transparency to the book, and invites the reader to truly perceive what a business venture entails.
📚 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 :
Even with the occasional technicalities, the simple language and flow of the book makes it an easy, impressive and engaging read, suitable for all ages. It is a good book for young entrepreneurs and eager business minds alike, looking to venture into the daunting world of business without an intimate guide at hand. It covers the topic of greenfield ventures, rebranding, investments, government regulations, foreign exchange, etc. in a concise and entertaining format.
📚 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐲𝐚 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐠𝐧 :
Time and again, in the book, the author has exhibited one of the biggest reasons of his success : the art of delegation and trust. As is elaborated by the co-authors in their ending notes, I was happy to see him grant chances to people with true talent, and aid their growth in the process. He demonstrates an ability to trust people, building the mutual confidence that is fundamental to a good business. The Akshay Tritiya Campaign was one such example, wherein the author wholeheartedly worked on an idea pitched in by someone else, because he saw prospects in it that others didn't.
📚 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 :
This might be a little personal, but here it is : Usually, I am skeptical about autobiographies by businessmen, because there often happens to be a wrongfully presented romanticization of hustle culture, which has a negative impact on the current generation that already struggles with a lot. However, in this book, I was pleasantly surprised to find a gentle approach towards work life : a readiness to pour necessary energy into the business, while simultaneously being genuinely mindful and enthusiastic about family life, and love in general. Even when he was thoroughly busy, he was sensitive to the fact that his family was missing him, and that this sacrifice hurt him as well but he had to do it, for their comfort in the future. It sends a strong and much needed message to the youth and the old, alike.
📚 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 :
Overall, the text is an interesting document of the jewellery industry throughout the years, and a perfectly interesting guide towards a successful business establishment, created inspite of hurdles and obstacles. It has an obvious appeal for young entrepreneurs, but I do think that every reader should give this book a go, regardless of their background.

The Joy Alukkas Story is an auto-biographical account of one of the most successful jewellery entrepreneurs in the world, Joy Alukkas. The book traces his journey from a humble childhood in Thrissur, Kerala, to a global empire of over 160 showrooms across 11 countries. Along the way, it reveals the secrets of his business acumen, his personal values, and his philanthropic vision.

The book is co-authored by Thomas Scaria and Nidhi Jain along with Joy himself. The book is based on extensive interviews with Joy Alukkas, his family members, his associates, and his customers. The book is divided into 12 chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of his life and career.

The book begins with a prologue that narrates a dramatic incident in 2001, when Joy Alukkas impulsively bought a Rolls Royce car in Dubai, after being insulted by a salesman. He then used the car as a promotional tool for his jewellery business, creating a huge buzz and boosting his brand image. The prologue sets the tone for the rest of the book, which showcases Joy Alukkas’s bold and innovative approach to business.

The first chapter, A Diamond in the Rough, introduces Joy Alukkas’s family background and early influences. It describes how his father, Varghese Alukka, was a self-made entrepreneur who ventured into various businesses, such as textile printing, umbrella manufacturing, radio agency, and real estate. Joy Alukkas was the eleventh of fifteen siblings, and was considered a misfit and a rebel by his brothers. He was, however, very close to his father, and learned the ropes of business from him.

The second chapter, The Birth of a Brand, recounts how Joy Alukkas’s father re-entered the jewellery business in 1964, after a brief hiatus. He named the showroom Alukkas, a short and catchy version of their family name. He also obtained a licence to deal in gold, which was a scarce and regulated commodity at the time. Joy Alukkas was involved in various aspects of the business, such as running errands, organizing events, and supervising construction projects.

The third chapter, Cashless in Kashmir, and Other Adventures, narrates some of the challenges and risks that Joy Alukkas faced in his early years of business. It tells the story of how he travelled to Kashmir to buy pearls, but was robbed of his cash and jewellery. He managed to escape with the help of a local taxi driver, and returned to Thrissur with a valuable lesson. The chapter also describes how he expanded his business to other parts of Kerala, and how he dealt with labour unions, competitors, and customers.

The fourth chapter, Love, Death and Golden Dreams, delves into Joy Alukkas’s personal life and emotions. It reveals how he fell in love with Jolly, the daughter of a prominent jeweller in Kottayam, and how he faced opposition from both families. It also recounts how he lost his father in a tragic accident, and how he coped with the grief and the responsibility of taking over the family business. The chapter also chronicles his first overseas venture, when he opened a showroom in Abu Dhabi in 1987.

This focus on delighting the customer is a valuable takeaway for any entrepreneur. The author's shares personal anecdotes and pivotal moments in the brand's history, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges, triumphs, and strategic decisions that shaped Joyalukka's trajectory.

The book delves into Joy Alukkas background, starting in Thrissur, India, a hub for the jewellery trade. Moreover, the book transcends mere business insights, transcending into a celebration of the profound emotional connections forged through jewelry. Early in the morning, I decided to give myself a new year present. And when I saw this book, I felt this one will be the best gift for me.😍 A book about the world's renowned jeweller, Joy Alukkas, who won't love to read this book?So I had to read this and trust me I want to pat myself for the decision I took for myself.🥹

The book "Spreading Joy", written by Joy Alukkas with Thomas Scaria and Nidhi Jain is an autobiography of the world famous jeweller, Joyalukkas. This book narrates the life story of Joy Alukkas including his childhood, his whole family, his youth, as well as his whole business from the past to the present day. The author shares even the smallest details about his family and how he loved his father. In the book, he has shared a lot about his father, about how he loved discipline, how he loved to work.

He shares how is father was his Idol and how he wanted to be like him. He loves to listen to his father whatever he said and he used to obey the instructions given by his father. By doing this, he started walking his father's foot steps. Joy shares how his father loved cleanliness and strictly followed the rules of cleanliness. Joy called his father as "Appan" and he shares that Appan believed that practical education was more important than a certificate of degree. Appan believed that for education one needed 3Rs- Reading, (w)riting and (a)rithmetic and except the 3Rs,life itself teaches us everything. He further adds how his father loved to learn and never stopped receiving knowledge even in his fifties.

Joy shares about his mother's personality. Joy called his mother, "Amma". Joy's mother was very talkative, jocular, invariably cheerful and very lovely. She would enter into the childish games with enthusiasm. When she used to get angry, she would become a martinet and she would punish with a heavy hand.

One thing I didn't like was that Joy's sibling, Paul, a brilliant student who wasn't allowed to complete his college education because is father was discontented to see his absence in the showroom as he was attending the classes. According to Joy's father, he was neglecting his duties at the showroom and hance we have to live is college education even after many protests. This was the only thing I didn't like.

This book is such a pretty book that I even forgot that I was reading an autobiography which was a non fiction book. The books had some of the family pictures of Joy. And most of the inauguration pictures had Joy and his wife together. This increased my respect for him.🥹I was like,oh how this gentleman loves his wife and gives her equal rights, respect and love she deserves. The book is filled with beautiful quotes that we can completely resonate with. Overall a great pick. Loved this!!😌

I was not that interested in gold when I was a kid but in the past 2-3 years I have become a fan of gold ornaments and have begun saving images of jewellery on Pinterest and other websites. And this piqued my interest to read this book.

Born and brought up in Kerala and one among the 15 siblings in the Alukkas family, a go-to person for business, running the errands in the backend but never given credit, Mr Joy Alukkas is always in high spirits to learn and handle business under the guidance of his father whom he revers the most. Besides studies, he always looked forward to expanding the gold stores while coming up with new strategies and ideas. His simmering desire to open Alukkas Jewellers in the UAE paved the path for his success despite facing challenges all the way, be it in family or profession. Tuning every hurdle and snarky remark he faced into a new opportunity, he became the CEO of the largest gold retail store in the world with more than 160 outlets all over the world.

All the while reading this book, one can see how humble, disciplined and gutsy Mr Joy is. The fantasies for his marriage would connect him to the youth. His new theme One Woman, 1,00,000 expressions, caught my eye. Delving deep into the customer's choices and enhancing sales through auspicious days and with the right location to be accessible to customers, he made an impact in the gold business. Living in Dubai in the initial days of its development, he made some prominent decisions that indirectly led to making it the City of Gold. Tailoring his business with the current choices of people and standing true to his principles is what made him stand out from the rest.

I have got to know things that I haven’t known to date through this book. It speaks about the life of Mr Joy from childhood to the present, his choices, his hitches, his success and his challenges. I wish there were more of his stories either from the members of his family or close associates of his company. All the major changes in the gold market are evident in this book which intrigues us more. I recommend this book to those who are more oriented towards entrepreneurship and business and love to read about the leading business CEOs' stories.

In short, this book gives us a keen idea of how a person aspiring to do business either in uncharted waters or native land must look out for more opportunities rather than stopping at the hurdles. Mr Joy also inaudibly verbalises that there should be no full stops in business but only pauses. Spreading Joy is the title of this book but I would say that it is Spreading Joy with Gold✨.

"Spreading Joy" serves as a captivating memoir that intricately weaves the remarkable life story of Joy Alukkas, the visionary entrepreneur behind the globally renowned Joyalukkas Jewellery. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of Thrissur, where Alukkas, driven by an unwavering passion for the jewellery industry, relocates with his family to seek new business horizons.

The memoir skillfully narrates Alukkas's early struggles, emphasizing his resilience in the face of numerous obstacles. From his humble beginnings in Kerala to navigating the challenges of the Gulf with limited resources and language proficiency, Alukkas emerges as a testament to the power of perseverance and hard work. His relentless dedication to customers and an unyielding work ethic lay the foundation for a thriving empire that spans the UAE, India, Southeast Asia, the UK, and the US.

What makes "Spreading Joy" truly compelling is its exploration of the core principles that shaped Alukkas's success. The book delves into his business acumen, strategies, and innovative marketing ideas, offering invaluable insights for aspiring entrepreneurs. Readers gain a deep understanding of Alukkas's adaptability and resilience, traits that proved indispensable during challenging times. The memoir doesn't merely focus on the business aspect; it also provides a glimpse into the familial bonds and challenges faced by the Alukkas family. Issues surrounding property division and sibling relationships add a human touch to the narrative, making it relatable to a broader audience.

The narrative unfolds chronologically, providing a comprehensive look at the evolution of Joyalukkas Jewellery and Alukkas's journey as a leader. It effectively highlights pivotal moments, such as the opening of the first store in Abu Dhabi and the subsequent triumph over competitors in Dubai. Alukkas's ability to transform a family-run business into a global chain disrupts traditional models and cements his status as a business luminary.

"Spreading Joy" is not just a story of triumph; it is a guide for aspiring entrepreneurs, offering practical lessons and inspiration. The book's engaging prose keeps readers hooked. Alukkas's inclusion in Forbes' Billionaires list and recognition as a prominent Arab business leader further solidify the relevance of his journey. "Spreading Joy" is a masterfully crafted memoir that transcends the typical rags-to-riches narrative. It is an inspiring tale of resilience, dedication, and hard work, making it a must-read for anyone seeking motivation in their entrepreneurial pursuits.

SPREADING JOY: How Joyalukkas Became the World's Favourite Jeweller.

SPREADING JOY not only captures a phenomenal entrepreneurial story, but also provides rare insights into an industry that has predominantly been fragmented and unorganized.

I read this amazing account in hardback format. It's a beautiful hardcover with a glossy dust jacket. It's around 233 pages, 12 chapters with a few coloured pictures inserted in between which give a personalised touch to the story. The language is very simple & the narrative is fast paced. It can be finished in maximum 2 sittings. The story telling style makes it a total page turner.

The book begins with a wonderful story when the protagonist was shunned by a car salesman who could not gauge his financial standing which led Mr.Alukkas to buy the world's no. 1 car, on the spot. The icing on the cake was when, later on realising the gravity of his impulsive decision, he turned it into a money magnet & a brand building opportunity. This story had me invested & keen on reading the next chapter, looking forward to enjoying more such incidents.

It was endearing to note how Alukkas name was established in the UAE after the author was left with no assets in the home country post the family partition. In Mr.Alukkas's own words, he always managed to find out-of-the-box solution & turned challenges to opportunities. His risk taking appetite, a never-say-die spirit, honesty in business dealings, empathy for all the stakeholders in his business & a sharp eye on the bottom line were few of the key learnings, he took from his father.

My key learnings from this inspiring autobiography are;
•Staying ahead of the curve is strategically important.
•We make our own luck.
•Give primacy to the company's financial health.
•Humility.
•Carpe diem.
•Reinvent yourself.
•Simple living & giving back to the society.
•An unconditional, strong support by your partner let's you venture into unknown waters without worrying about your family, back home.

He says, work stimulates him & lends a vibrancy to his life. His retirement stands postponed, indefinitely.
A rare combination of genius & passion, truly.

BOOK – SPREADING JOY

AUTHORS – JOY ALUKKAS, THOMAS SCARIA, NIDHI JAIN

REVIEW:

We have all heard the saying that ‘Do not judge a book by its cover’ and yet I did judge that this book would be a good choice by its cover. I was wrong, it was much better and far exceeded my expectations.

The minute I read the statement- ‘How Joyalukkas became the world’s favourite jeweller,’ I was transported back in 2018 when I was in Dubai with my family, and we had made purchases from their exotic store at the Gold Souk, the birthplace of this ever-soaring high brand. I still recall how excited my mother was to see the plethora of design choices in diamond and gold jewellery offered to her, and can vouch for her satisfaction and happiness when we left the store with my hands full of shopping bags with “Joyallukas” branded over them. That is what Joyallukas truly is, a place to fulfil all your jewellery desires with a guarantee of being provided with the best quality at the same time.

Initially one might think that it would be only an autobiography of the person in frame, Mr. Alukkas, but it was all about ‘how Joyalukkas became the world’s favourite jeweller,’ as promised at the cover page. This really pointed out how the authors valued the readers time, as believed, and well said by Mr. Alukkas in the book that “time is money.” This book teaches us how one should not be afraid to take risks if he believes in himself fully and trusts his own instincts, how sometimes one must not consider as to what others might think, and only then can one be a successful entrepreneur.

I truly was inspired by Mr. Alukkas when he mentioned that his retirement was postponed indefinitely and how he frequently mentioned how much he loved his work. I noticed how even when he can put his business on an auto pilot mode, he still actively participates in daily operations and personally visits each store timely, to ensure a trajectory growth of the products, the business, and most importantly, the satisfaction of the customers.

The book is well articulated and the polished literature makes it comfortable for a reader to embark upon an almost 50-year journey that made Joyallukas what it is, today.

RATING – 5/5

RECOMMENDED

THANK YOU!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐/5
In the late '50s, Puthussery Alukka Joseph Varghese moved into jewelry retail. His son, Joy Alukkas expanded his empire in India as well as the United Arab Emirates. This is the story of Joy Alukkas and the global jewelry giant, Joyalukkas Jewelry.
The book discusses the early years of Mr. Alukkas and of his family business. From the genesis of Alukkas Jewelry to its expansion in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other emirates is talked of in great detail.
Mr. Alukkas had rather humble beginnings, and it was not until he was in his teens did things start getting better for the Alukkas, and Mr. Alukkas tried his hands on the family business. And that, was the beginning of a new era for the family and for the Malayali jewelry market. With his ideas and inspiring dedication, Mr. Alukkas worked in the jewelry store and with the same hope and dedication, went to the UAE with the plan of setting up an Alukkas Jewelry store there. The man's life is nothing less than a beacon of inspiration, as he talks about how he faced numerous setbacks in the UAE, and even betrayals.
Joy Alukkas also talks about business, giving deep insights over his learnings through decades of experience, giving examples even, with his own life incidents to provide a better understanding. He emphasised on branding, promotions and maintaining public relations in his brand and its impact is very much visible nowadays. One incident in this regard that stuck with me was his decision of getting actor R. Madhavan on board for being the brand ambassador of Joyalukkas, which was unconventional, fantastic, and thought-provoking.
The writing of the book really kept me hooked. As the authors made a portrait out of words of the life of Joy Alukkas, they also made sure to use simple yet effective vocabulary, knowing well when to add an extravagant finesse.
Joy Alukkas' has a legacy that is larger than life. The book, Spreading Joy here, takes the charge of giving us a sneak peek into the history of Joyalukkas Jewelry and its chairman, Joy Alukkas.

My rating - ☆☆☆☆/5

💍💍
Starting off with the cover, it's not only visually appealing but establishes a strong visual connect with the author, Joy Alukkas on the first glance. Joy has been successfully able to carve out a captivating narrative for the book - right from the moment someone hold onto it.

💍💍
The book is a bit slow paced, as it should be for autobiographies. They need to be not long, but descriptive enough because that is what a reader is there for. To get to know the life of the person is the primary goal of me reading an autobiography and not the number of pages it takes to get me there.

💍💍
The first few pages might bore you as they are nothing much special. It's an early memoir of Joy's life as a kid and his early childhood memories. Recounting them in his autobiography, Joy has very slyly moved on to later parts of his life; from where the book takes an interesting turn.

💍💍
My personal favorite section has to be the part where an image gallery of his life is printed. It kinda, in my opinion, is a whole summary of the book but without any spice. It houses Joy's life's timeline - right from when he was born to his most recent family picture with his grandchildren. It's a nice method to be used by any autobiography author to engage readers in a more personalised way.

Coming across this book was completely coincident. I was scrolling Amazon searching for motivational and inspirational reads and then I saw the man on the cover and I felt like I've seen him somewhere. After few minutes of scratching head I remembered that he is the same man whom I've seen in television advertisement many a times. Then my curiosity lead me to read this book. Here's my review about this book and I hope it will help you.

"Spreading Joy: How Joyalukkas Became the World's Favourite Jeweller" by Joy Alukkas, Nidhi Jain, and Thomas Scaria is a captivating and insightful book that delves into the fascinating journey of Joyalukkas, a renowned jewelry brand. This book provides a detailed account of the brand's rise to success, highlighting the key values, strategies, and innovations that propelled it to become a global favorite.

The authors skillfully weave together personal anecdotes, behind-the-scenes stories, and interviews with key individuals, offering readers a glimpse into the inner workings and the challenges faced by the brand. Beautiful pictures of his entire journey from issuing a licence to advertising in Rolls Royce campaigns, from very first Visa stamp on his passport to setting World record and getting recognition from Limca Book of Records are inside of this book which tells us what a person's sheer will can make him achieve.

The book emphasizes the brand's core values of trust, transparency, and superior craftsmanship. It highlights the importance of creating memorable experiences for customers and nurturing a strong connection with them. Throughout the pages, important lines such as
"Our customers are our true treasures" and "We believe in spreading joy through every jewel" serve as motivating mantras for the brand's success.

"Spreading Joy" is not just a book about the jewelry industry but also a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and dedication in building a global empire. This is a must-read for entrepreneurs, business enthusiasts, and jewelry aficionados alike.

"Spreading Joy" by JOY ALUKKAS, co-authored by Thomas Scaria and Nidhi Jain, is a captivating autobiography of the renowned jewellery entrepreneur JOY ALUKKAS. While it was a standard read for me, the journey portrayed in the book seemed somewhat softer compared to the riveting struggles detailed in other entrepreneurial biographies. Despite this, Joy's life, though seemingly ordinary, imparts a valuable lesson on utilizing one's intellect effectively when aspiring to achieve greatness. What I felt after reading this book is -
"Taking risks effectively," as demonstrated by Joy's approach to business – not merely concerned with success or failure, but driven by a mindset of continuous growth and learning.

The book skillfully weaves together elements of Joy's family background, love life, self-discovery, and parenting. Surprisingly, I had not come across Joy before, despite occasional sightings in newspaper /news . Sometimes, the allure of reading lies in discovering the personality of someone you never considered knowing. The writing style is both simple and beautiful, yet it masterfully captures the intricacies of life, which are as challenging as living them. Blessed with divine grace, Joy consistently achieves excellence, expanding his jewelry empire across numerous countries with hundreds of outlets.

Overall "Spreading Joy" is a worthwhile read that offers valuable insights into the entrepreneurial world. It provides a glimpse into the art of execution and the nascent stages of ventures. However, in my evaluation, it falls short of a 5-star rating when compared to other biographies I've encountered. It primarily serves as a journey of discovering inner strength rather than a conventional self-starting narrative. Despite this, I recommend giving it a chance for the unique perspective it brings to the entrepreneurial landscape and to know the personality of achieving the lead in gold world.

Rating -3.8
Cover:- I like the cover of the book. It's simple, sober and beautiful
Title:- As beautiful as the thoughts and learning of this book.

Joy Alukkas , a renounced name in jewellery industry. A family with well to do background in India how they shift base to Dubai and started a business and it's journey.
There story background and siblings and how the siblings didn't think of Joy alukkas as a businessman first and didn't think he has calibre to be holding a business for long time.

How he went to Dubai and shifted his base as he start a chain with name Alukkas and didn't go for partnership with any siblings and started the business. He is talking about era, when Indira Gandhi died and time when Gulf war started after Kuwait invasion by Iraq and how he thought that he might not able to handle the business but time turn and he started again and when family tragedy strikes he was left with no assets left in India and he shifted back to Dubai and gain new heights in business and set his family base and change the name from just Alukkas to Joy Alukkas and after he had a fortune at bay he let family enter in business and he move towards philanthropy works as his father Does at his time and dream off during his last year . They set up a cancer research hospital for community. There IPO brings them good money and they started another venture under alukkas names.

The account show the Role of family and parents and there story is nothing less than a star in making. And interesting things that whoever from India is underestimated by Rolls-Royce have to change the policy of there company when they took revenge from them .

The life of Joy alukkas also get a hit when his plane crashed in Bangalore due to glitch in the engine and he thinks himself fortunate that he got saved from the tragedy and take life seriously and think of it as precious gift.

In my opinion this book doesn't really do justice with person character as whole as there are gaps in between anecdotes but written with periodic form and how they became the favourite jeweller is must read for those who want to achieve something in fashion industry and especially in jewellery art and design

Every business is not a success. Everyone can never be an entrepreneur. No one can escape failure and loss. The phase of jealousy can never be forbidden in our lives. Being honest will pay off.
These are the thoughts that came to mind while I started reading this book. To be honest, I heard about this book from one of my colleagues, and I bought it on his recommendation. I am very certain it is worth reading.

I have heard about Jos Allukas and the theme song of it from my pupillage. But after reading this book, I learned about the difference between Jos and Joy Allukas.

I really admired every phase of Joy’s life. Out of 15 siblings, he stood out and followed his father’s path. Though his siblings thought Joy was not taking up any responsibility other than running errands for his father, deep down he learned every move and approach from him.

Joy's first step to travel out of India and his first shop in Abu Dhabi. The way he learned about advertising and how he implemented it in order to raise his sales. Bringing more transparency to gold sales and the first computer-generated bill was a great step toward his success.

The decision to change the brand name from Allukas to Joy Allukas, stay calm when his siblings aren't fair while dividing the properties, accept the situation, and build his own kingdom indeed gives us goosebumps.

His successful journey was possible because of his supportive wife, too. She played a pivotal role in taking care of their household chores along with their three children.

Takeaway:
• Grab the opportunity when it is available.
• Marketing through advertising plays a big role in sales.
• Talent should be weighed based on the studies.
• Experience is a great teacher.
• Smart work, honesty, and genuine effort never let you down.

This book gives a new perspective on the business world and never fails to inspire us.
Note: To gather the information about Joy, the author spent 6,000 minutes. Just wow!

The story of Joy Alukkas is nothing short of remarkable. I wanted to start my 2024 with a powerful entrepreneurship book and when I first saw this book I felt that this is what I was searching! Starting from his father's umbrella business in Thrissur, he ventured into the world of Jewelry Retail and eventually made his way to the dazzling city of Dubai in the late 1950s.

What I love about this book is how it not only tells an incredible entrepreneurial story but also provides valuable insights into the gold-retailing industry. Mr Joy's innovations, like the use of carat meter and the first billing software, revolutionized the industry and set him apart from the competition.

Aspiring entrepreneurs from all industries will find this book incredibly valuable. It offers a glimpse into the mindset and strategies needed to build a successful organization. Plus, it's a testament to the power of perseverance and staying true to your customers.

What truly resonates with me is the unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction that has been at the core of Joy's business philosophy. Being the Customer's Favorite Jeweler has always been his ethos, and it's evident in the way he has built his empire.

"Spreading Joy" not only encapsulates an extraordinary entrepreneurial journey but also provides invaluable insights into an industry that has historically been fragmented and unorganized. It's a book that aspiring entrepreneurs, regardless of the industry they operate in, will find immensely valuable as they navigate the path of building their dream organizations.

I highly recommend "Spreading Joy" to anyone seeking inspiration and practical wisdom on their entrepreneurial journey. Get ready to be motivated and empowered by Joy Alukkas' incredible story!

"Spreading Joy: How Joyalukkas Became the World's Favourite Jeweller" is the journey of a person, rather an individual institution who has spent his whole life to flourish the finest jwelery.

Joy Alukkas, the man who has brightened the jewelry industry, has lived a life full of simultaneous dark and bright fringes. From an ordinary start up to become people's favorite jeweler, it's an encouraging journey of decades, walked through dedication, diligence and stubborn mindset.

In the 50s Jospeh Verhese initiated a little jewelry business, which was taken forward by his son Joy Alukkas who migrated to Dubai in the late 80s and reformed the initiative.
But as it's said, nothing goes on without resistance, the gulf war in the 90s allmost diminished his dreams, he had to fly back to India; but dreams don't let the dreamers run away like a coward. Joy went back after sometime, reestablished and re-reformed the business, spreaded it throughout the UAE and with the passage of time, became the people's favorite.

This book on a whole has highlighted his attitude, aptitude; dreams, creativities; motives, movements; decisions, cultivations; philosophy, philanthropy; overall everything from his struggling days to the moment of reaching the peak of success.

Thomas Scaria and Nidhi Jain's accurate research and authentic composition have left a milestone which deserves only superlative remarks. Their writing is engaging and easy to follow, making it accessible for readers of all levels. They've gifted a habdbook of immense inspiration to the readers, with its practical advice, thought-provoking insights, and emphasis on passion, this book equips readers with the tools necessary to thrive in their careers and lead fulfilling lives.

'Spreading Joy' is a book about Joy Alukkas' journey into forming the world's best jewellery brand. It's an autobiography written by Joy Alukkas, Thomas Scaria and Nidhi Jain.

The story starts with an instance of 'don't judge a book by it's cover', an experience of the narrator, Joy Alukkas, where he was judged based on his looks in a car showroom and he ended up buying a displayed Rolls Royce, proving his worth. This led to a campaign which made the brand prominent in Gulf. This start made me hooked to the book.

Personally I had only seen the advertisement for Joyalukkas with celebrities showcasing beautiful jewellery but never thought much about it untill I came across this book and I was immediately interested to read it.

Narrator starts by telling about his childhood and how he got started with his own business. His father had a few different businesses in which all his sons were involved. He used to work outdoor jobs mostly which he thoroughly enjoyed. His experiences made him an independent thinker and especially a problem solver.

There is an array of pictures in the middle of the book, showing read advertisements, real pictures of the family members, big achievements and basically all the pictures, readers can use to visualise the timeline of events. The advertisement with Rolls Royce campaign is also there. The pictures were definitely a plus and added to the experience.

One can definitely feel inspired by the narrator in how he trusted himself and built the business empire. He was ambitious and never stopped loving his work which made him who he is today.

Overall the book is great, it might look jarring to a fiction reader but it's actually not and it's kinda short too with just 200 pages. I definitely recommend this.

"Spreading Joy" delves into the extraordinary entrepreneurial voyage of Joy Alukkas, a key figure in India's renowned 'gold town,' Thrissur. Shifting from an umbrella business to jewelry retail in the late 1950s, Joy's transition showcased his innate entrepreneurial spirit inherited from his father, Puthussery Alukka Joseph Varghese. The narrative unfolds in 1986 when Joy, in pursuit of his personal El Dorado, ventured to Dubai, the modern 'city of gold.'

Navigating the intricacies of procurement, staffing, sales, and regulatory challenges, compounded by language barriers, Joy persevered, inaugurating the first 'Alukkas' jewelry store in Abu Dhabi and soon after, another in Dubai. Despite the onset of the Gulf War in 1990, disrupting life and business, Joy's resilience led him back to the Gulf, where he re-established and expanded the Alukkas footprint across the UAE and beyond. Over the next two decades, his visionary approach expanded the business to eleven countries with over 160 outlets, revolutionizing gold retail with innovations like the karat meter and pioneering billing software.

"Spreading Joy" not only chronicles an exceptional entrepreneurial journey but also offers rare insights into an industry historically fragmented and unorganized. Beyond the jewelry sector, aspiring entrepreneurs can glean immense value from this book as they embark on building their dream organizations. Throughout the years, Joy Alukkas has maintained the ethos of being the 'customer's favorite jeweler,' making this book an engaging and enlightening read for those seeking inspiration and guidance in the world of business.

Spreading Joy ✨

I'm not a non fiction fan, especially memoirs are not my cup of tea. I grabbed this book because of the person in the cover, none other than the famous jeweller, Joy Alukkas. As a keralite I know him very well, I've visited his shops multiple times. I know him as the word's favorite jeweller, owner of Joyalukkas jewellers, a successful businessman. I wanted to know more about him as the title says "How Joy Alukkas became the world's favorite jeweller”

From the beginning this book was very entertaining as it takes us through the life of the Alukka family. Since I'm from Kerala and I could relate to every place mentioned in this book, I could easily connect to what I read and it truly felt like watching a movie.

The journey of his life from childhood to current successful stage is clearly depicted in this book. Each of his success and failure are clearly mentioned. We can see the journey of a young man who landed in gulf with no knowledge of business and language, no contacts and with little money, how he grows into one of the most successful businessmen in the country. His story was interesting, captivating and inspiring on a lot of levels.

It was written in a straight forward manner and was an easy read. I really liked how he managed to add humour and oh the Malayalam proverbs! I'm a huge fan of Malayalam proverbs. Some lines from the book that struck a chord with me,
"Do not become prisoner or a hostage to the future" is one of them.
If you really want to read something inspiring I'd recommend you this one. I really enjoyed this memoir.

"Never hold on to a dead horse. It can prove very expensive."
First of all let's start with the motivation behind starting this book. Being someone more inclined towards fiction and historical non fiction, choosing this book came as a surprise. As soon as amazon recommended it to me, I immediately read the blurb and felt connected, there was an instant urge to read it. I knew it would inspire me in more ways than one and further I also saw several of my reader friends talk gold about it.
Now coming to the actual review, it was a resilient chunk of an encouraging life story. The book in a very intelligible manner grapples with daily life problems and emotional growth that becomes relatable to read. For example the quote "Dinner was a noisy affair", was a very ordinary quote but it hits haard as an Indian. The prologue builds a very quick witted environment to the rest of the book. Undeniably the book was to cater to a business minded audience but I found myself with little to no knowledge of business, learning important life lessons.
There was grit, sharpness, fluidity of narration and most importantly the results of hardwork. I have always believed that sometimes unexpected people do surprising things and this book just made me stand stronger. 'The Cashless in Kashmir' chapter will forever be engraved in my memory. The photographs and significant life moments captured in a few pages around the middle made the book even more special. Not all books are to be devoured, some are to be read in bits and pieces, slowly chewed so that their flavour lingers on. This book comes in that categorization. I cherished this book in more ways than one.

This autobiography is a story of rich cultural nuances, complex family dynamics, and individual perseverance rather than just a corporate success story.
The story, expertly crafted by Joy Alukkas, Thomas Scaria, and Nidhi Jain, is both educational and emotionally captivating. The foundation for a tale of aspiration, tenacity, and inventiveness is laid by Alukkas's early experiences, which include his early days in the jewellery industry and their early years spent in Thrissur.
