Fourteen years before The Hawthorne Divorce , two college students meet among the ivy-covered walls of Harvard University and set off a series of events that will last years... Author Courting Augustine is a 50k novella that follows Rikkard and Augustine falling love and acts as a prequel to The Hawthorne Divorce .
Bree Porter came screaming into the world on Valentine’s Day, so she never had any choice but to be addicted to romance. Now she spends her day swooning over soulmate love and getting flagged by the government for her internet searches, all while conveniently ignoring her university assignment deadlines.
An ARC was provided by the author and her team in exchange for an honest review.
Bree is finally back! And what a way to do her comeback. Courting Augustine is everything I expected it to be, and such a great way to introduce the protagonists. Augustine and Rikkard’s story has such an intriguing way to start. These two are almost opposites. While she’s, as described by him, like a poem—quiet and mysterious, but beautiful and captivating—, he’s an extroverted, charming, astute and determined young man, whom she’s warned to be the synonym of trouble. And where she’s good at following plans and rules, these can’t stop nor influence him. Still, since their first time seeing each other, they’re bound to be. Their chemistry and the tension between them are present and were off charts from the beginning. And even though they shouldn’t be good together, they are. They’re different, but very alike at the same time. They can understand and solve each other like no one else. And I really liked following them as they learned each other from the inside out, and seeing how their feelings slowly progressed from lure (on her part) and obsession (on his) to something else, something more. I've gotta to be honest, I’m biased when it comes to Bree and her books, because I love her, I love her mind and I missed her writing and her way of creating stories. But it doesn’t matter, because there’s no denying how amazing this book is, nor that its end is a cliffhanger that’s driving me insane. I’m hyped to see how Augustine and Rikkard are doing now, all things considered. And speaking of now, what was that epilogue?? I swear to the skies I need The Hawthorne Divorce to be live very soon, so I can understand what is going on, and see Augustine and Rikkard having the happy ending they deserve.
First things first, RIKKARD IS MY MAN, I was not expecting to fall for him but oh my I’m in love 😍 Thank you Bree for the ARC! This was book 0.5, the start of Rikkard and Augustine’s story! He was obsessed with her, ever since their first meeting! When he invited her to the Argus Club cocktail party and introduced her as his girl AHHH~ and then the poem “Il Penseroso” that he said reminds him of her, MY HEART~ 🥹 When he said “𝑩𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒂𝒎𝒆, 𝑨𝒖𝒈𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒔𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒍.” THAT WAS IT! I WAS GONE FOR THIS MAN 😩 Their first kiss! Them in his room, in her room, at the party, in the library, him teaching her how to play chess, writing notes and putting them on the library wall, starting to send each other small secrets notes and her keeping them all 😭 There are so many cute moments but I can’t say them all because it would be a spoiler! The Argus Club hunting game with clues, was something else 😮 fun, interesting and little spooky! I was really invested in it and trying to figure out what the clues were saying 😂 I wonder what her parents have done, because he told her, she is not her parents and she said she could become like them 🤔 The talks they had and how he said she’s the only one who makes him feel real and how she’s also the only one who cares about him 🫂 After they started dating there was so many cute and HOT moments 🤭 THE EPILOGUE… there was a time jump and it was in Rikkard’s pov, I was really shocked and confused as to what was happening 😳 and when I saw the blurb for book 1 and what had happened, my heart broke 😭 I NEED THE NEXT BOOK RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS AND NO ANSWERS! Side note: I really liked his cousin Soren and I hope he will get a book too ❤️

Tropes: - College Romance (Harvard) - Boy Obsessed - Extroverted BF/ Introverted GF - Some Dark Academia - Secret Society/Club
I just wanted to say thank you to Bree Porter for this opportunity to become part of her ARC team!
I AM ABSOLUTELY ALREADY OBSESSED WITH AUGUSTINE AND RIKKARD RIGHT WHEN I FIRST MET THEM! Courting Augustine was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and it is the perfect start of The Hawthornes. You have Augustine who you can see is introverted and to herself but something about Rikkard just makes her feel drawn towards him as the feeling is mutual between them. Rikkard on the other hand is extroverted and is known to be an elite when it comes to his status and name. He has his eyes on Augustine as well. I could literally feel the tension between them from beginning to end and oh how I enjoyed it! This is set in Harvard University which is an Ivy League school so I had a sense of old money vibes coming from Augustine and Rikkard. You also get a sense of mystery within the secret club/ society called the Argus Club where men are only allowed. You will see how it plays out and connects to Augustine with the help of Rikkard 🤭. Every scene between them held tension and the chemistry between them was off the charts! It is the way they know so many specific details about one another which add to their relationship. There are more secrets that are bound to be uncovered between the two of them. Something about the Hawthornes has me thinking many things and I hope answers come out in the next book which I am so ready for! THE ENDING OF COURTING AUGUSTINE HAD ME SHOCKED and oh I can't wait to see how it plays out in The Hawthorne Divorce.
4.99 stars!!!!!!! “I know that you make me feel real.” Gave us Boy obsessed from the very beginning, and we love to see it ❤️
•This is how you write a prequel novella people please take notes like I'm not even playing around i have not felt this good about a book in months and this was fucking amazing. I need everyone to stop what they are doing and just read this and love it.
•Rikkard and Augustine, oh, the power couple that you are!!!!!!! But that epilogue????Bree what do you mean my man will be in Jail for 10yrs😭😭but the revenge we love to see it. There is nothing like the taste of sweet revenge that keeps my blood running 😌
•Fuck Jonathan such a pussy ass boy.
•Keep in mind that this is a prequel novella, and lots of stuff is left hanging and sort of a cliffhanger ending, and all will be explained in due time 😌
bree is back with a banger!!! oh i loved this one so much and CAN‘T wait for the hawthorn divorce! even tho this book was a quick read cause it‘s told about how they met and how they got together i really enjoyed it and fell in love with both of them as a couple but also separately.
this book really makes me wanna attend harvard (especially in the fall) or overall just attend an US college🥲 yes i know not every college is like that but let me dream okayy?!
also that ending??? i need answers. asap.🤯
if you want a academic lovers, rich people, old money vibes, cozy fall read this is for you!! 🤎 i really loved everything about it and can‘t wait for what bree has up her sleeve with this world.
“Do you have a boyfriend, Augustine?” “I do.” “Mm. You're going to break up.”
Courting Augustine's star attraction was just beautifully aggressive eye-contact between Rikkard and Augustine. Every sentence, every paragraph was artistically written. I loved, loved, loved the aesthetic and the overall setting of the book.
Augustine Grady is our whip-smart fmc. She has an air of elegance around her. She's the kind of person that has specific rules and precise expectations from herself. Enter Rikkard and he has her questioning those rules and expectations.
Rikkard Hawthorne is my current obsession. From describing Augustine as a poem to sneaking into girl's dorm through the window. He won me. The book is basically Rikkard falling head over heels in love with Augustine from when he first saw her. He served the boy obsessed trope to the fullest.
From the way that Augustine describes Rikkard everytime, to Rikkard calling Augustine by the nickname that he gave her, to running in the rain I loved every aspect of this book. How they completed each other's quotes and sentences and were so in tune with eachother. This book is simply beautiful. I don't care if I'm being biased or anything but Rikkard and Augustine are now one of my favourite couple.
Courting Augustine basically is everything that you want to happen in an academia romance actually happening. And the abrupt ending.. Bree Porter, you genius. You know how to make a comeback and keep a person hooked.
I wish it was THIS simple. No honestly, I’ve read so many romance books and obviously more than dozen times I wish I was in fmc’s place but NO other book makes me wish I was in fmc’s place more than this. Although with 1-2 internal struggle, I wish it really was this easy and simple and uncomplicated finding my love was. Few weeks of flirting and teasing but even before that you knew you’d be married to this guy🥹🥰. A nice, smart, respectful and hot asf at the same time guy. This is what I wish for myself. I never wanted this book to end. It has very soft academia vibe with no major complexities nor toxicity. Just written as a love story that speaks to you. This also gives me Rose-Conner vibes although without any snappy banters. I know next book about to be full of angst and pain after tha kinda ending 💀😭 I hope we get Next Book soon too I’m waiting eagerly.
“Why you?”He echoed. I nodded. Rikkard met my gaze, eyes dark and intense. “Because you and I are the same, Augustine and I will not settle for anything less an equal.”
I was completely hooked by the characters and the mysterious aura of this book. Rikkard & Augustine were both strongly sketched caracters. Both smart, intuitive and stubborn. Though I can't help but feel that there's more to them. I can't wait to find out the layers beneath their personalities and I'm so excited for the next book! This book was intriguing and refreshing, and as always the writing was compelling!
one of my anticipated books by bree and It had me hooked! Boy obsessed with secret society and all the dark academia feels. I loved the vibe of this whole book and characters. Rikkard and Augustine were amazing together. Rikkard is a man of words!!! Everything that came out that me swooning. Blonde men by bree ‼️It was a novella but it was very insta love which isn’t my favorite. But the plot stood out so much>>> I need that next book because that ending!?!? It promised angst and second chance. 🙏🏽
“Why me?”
“Why you?” “Because you and I are the same, Augustine, and I will not settle for anything less than an equal.”
if there is one word to describe this book it would be: MYSTERIOUS!
i love a boy obsessed trope in a romance book 😍 but i am here to share my thoughts because i have never read anything like this before (some of you might have, so don’t take my word on it). CA is like secret society-ish, full of mystery and the build-up for the next book has leave me wanting for more. if i were to describe it even more, i might spoil the book.
i know some of you are deterred from reading a book if the review is coming from an arc reader, but CA is good in my humble opinion.
ok to be honest, i got an arc for this book and still so so grateful for it but also confused as hell!! ok i know this is a novella and we get more of these characters in the actual novel but felt like something was missing idk, I liked it, it was easy fast to ready and fun, rikkard was a interesting character also augustine, go girl you got this!!! it happened all too fast but yeah it was ok i guess, that ending tho damn! now i need the novel ehehe
Ahhh Bree is back!! And what an incredible book to come back with!
Rikkard and Augustine's Novella was such an amazing introduction into the Hawthorne world and a really insightful way to see how they met! I wish it could have been longer, I could read about these two for hours!
Rikkard is an intelligent, outgoing and highly popular character. Throughout the novella, you see a lot of women swoon over Rikkard and his captivating personality. But what I really loved about his character was the eyes he had for only Augustine. From the start, he immediately attaches on to Augustine, trying everything to make him, hers.
I giggled like a schoolgirl reading that scene because Rikkard is just so perfect and possessive. Bree couldn't have made him any better!
Augustine is a very reserved and intelligent character. When the book starts, she is very kept to herself and just wants to get through her schoolyears in peace. As the book progresses, you see her coming out of her shell, but still being wary of what could happen. Analysing what might happen each step of the way. Something I very much relate to lmaoo.
The book does end on a cliffhanger, BUT it just made me more desperate for the next book. I need to know what happens and how the situation is going to be rectified. I just need more Rikkard and Augustine!
Courting Augustine was so intense in a way I can’t even begin to explain. It was such a beautifully written prequel with even more beautiful characters. I loved the way Augustine&Rikkard were drawn to each other. The power play, the games, the vulnerability they both had for different reasons… Bree absolutely did a spectacular job writing the dynamic between those two. It truly felt like watching fate bring two people together. Seeing Augustine fall so hard for Rikkard despite having a boyfriend was…well, I can’t really blame her👀 I would be in the same situation as her too— that boy was charming beyond explanation, and I was melting during his scenes.
The writing was so poetic and absolutely perfect for the atmosphere of the story. CA is set at Harvard, so the academia vibes were a given, but I also loved how it was interwoven with old money! The thing is, the vibes were simply AMAZING.
Overall, Augustine&Rikkard’s story was everything I hoped it would be and more. This prequel had basically every trope/aspect I was looking for. And that epilogue?! I really don’t know what to say… I just know that reading what will happen next in the Hawthorne Divorce is not a want, but a NEED.
I’ll be obsessing over Augustine&Rikkard until the next book comes out🫠
Bree has made her much-awaited return with Courting Augustine!
As the first installment of "The Hawthornes" series, this novella it lived up to my high expectations, serving as a perfect starting point for Rikkard and Augustine's journey. Augustine's introverted and reserved nature beautifully contrasts with Rikkard's outgoing and elite persona, creating an undeniable magnetic pull between the two characters. Set in the Ivy League ambiance of Harvard University, the story exudes an old money sophistication that adds a captivating layer to the romance.
Beyond the compelling romance, Bree's exceptional world-building skills deserve recognition. The portrayal of the Harvard University setting and its dark academia atmosphere is nothing short of remarkable. . The meticulous portrayal of the Harvard University setting, immersed in dark academia aesthetics and prestigious society, was a treat to experience. Additionally, the exploration of secret societies and challenging tests added an intriguing layer of depth to the story, leaving us readers fascinated and hungry for more.
The ending of the book left me completely stunned.. Bree I truly can't wait for Hawthorne Divorce.
Overall, I highly recommend reading this novella; it's a must-read! Rikkard and Augustine's captivating story is bound to sweep you off your feet and make you fall in love with them.

Augustine is a very complex character with many layers and the only only person who can really see her is Rikkard. I can’t wait to read Rikkard’s pov and see how obsessed he is with his il penseroso.
Sometimes the book felt a little rushed but I believe it's because it's just a prequel to tell a little bit about their college years, yet the book didn’t dissapointed to make me really like the couple and their little traits.
I’m already thinking about how bree is going to parallel the scenes where they put notes in books so the other one can find it later or how they will still tease each other after 14 years.
Now can we talk about the epiloque and the blurb? WHAT DO YOU MEAN AUGUSTINE IS GOING DO BETRAY RIKKARD?(Or at least that’s what Rikkard thinks but i doubt Agustine is going to betray him, i bet someone is playing with them) Oh i just can’t wait for the angst and the mistery the hawthorne divorce will serve
I was so excited for this story and I’m so happy I finally met Rikkard and Augustine.
I loved everything about this. Augustine is an introvert, calm, smart and quiet, and has a life already planned in detail for her without any surprises. Rikkard is the opposite, he’s more extraverted, likes challenges and he wants augustine to get out of her comfort zone. The first time he spotted her man was always OBSESSED with her 😩 he is charming, intelligent and mysterious. I loved him and Augustine scenes, they were just so cute.
The dark academia vibes + secret society 🤌🏼 it can only be good.
The epilogue surprised me, I couldn’t believe what I was reading😭 I’m anxious but also excited to find out what happened !!🤎
okay, wow. first and foremost rikkard and augustine hawthorne are officially the people’s prince and princess 😭🫶 this novella was FANTASTIC and that ending had me gagged. i absolutely loveee the world that bree has introduced. it was so much fun to be immersed into a new world that she has created with characters and a certain aesthetic unlike anything she has done. 🥹 i am sooo excited for what’s to come and how everything will unfold in the following books. (ps. rikkard is so cobalt boy coded it’s not even funny. in another universe, he’s coballoway’s 8th child😙🫶)
I promise I’m normal about them, not unwell or anything (can’t stop thinking about their fight and what the hell happened 10 years later, why are they going to be marriage in crisis… why is Rikkard going to avenge something Augustine did? What is happening…)
this was sooo good?!? despite it being a short novella bree porter manages to have u falling for these characters and their love and chemistry with each other 😩 AND THE ENDING?!? WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT AT ALL!! I NEED THE FIRST BOOK NOW IMMEDIATELY
