This was good, but I probably wouldn't reread it.
Avi/Alice REALLY annoyed me, and she had some snarky comeback and thought that she didn't need what's his names protection for some reason...
And the mmc was really sweet and patient with Avivi, even when she was being annoying. He wasn't at all a memorable character, but he wasn't a bad character.
The romance felt rushed, and was a bit too much for me at times with the constant noticing how the other person looks or noticing a touch or kissing, and I ended up just skimming any romance part, because I didn't care about it at all.
So this wasn't bad, and it was a fun (but dark) retelling.

2.5 stars, personally.

I really liked the concept of the Jabberwock being a dragon-like creature that’s attacking the kingdom. It was a different twist on the classic tale with that element and the Wonderland madness.

The story is told in alternating first person of Avi and Bayne, but despite it being marked which chapter was from who’s perspective, they both read very similar. She noticed him shirtless and his muscles too much and too quick into the story for my tastes, & then they have to cuddle for warmth (which is basically the same as the one bed trope in my eyes), which did affect and lower my ratings.

Because I jumped into the middle of a series—yes, again, I know, I know. I’m terrible about doing that with KU books because I just want something quick and light and interesting, but the first book of a series doesn’t always interest me—so I definitely missed other characters’ stories from the author's other series called "The Forest Tales". That said, I don't think I'll be going back and reading the other books in that series. I may check out the other ones in "The Shattered Tales" series, though.

Overall this wasn’t bad, but it’s definitely not a favorite book or one I would buy a copy of. A bit too romance-y and details of torture/blood/injuries for my tastes at times, but it was a decent retelling.

Main Content- (please note: this is just broadly sharing some main content, not all the details like I typically do when sharing an in-depth content review.)

When someone looks into the Jabberwock’s eyes, it’s able to control the person and cause the human to give up so the monster can eat them (said that the people are “under a spell”); A couple mentions of praying (but not said towards Who); A mention of fate controlling things; A mention of Aviva being accused of practicing black magic; A mention of evil winning a battle (but good happens).

Experiencing and Seeing others tortured, attacks, beaten, injured, pain, blood/bleeding, & threatened death (semi-detailed to detailed); Believing a loved one died & grief (and another seeing the other person weeping, up to semi-detailed); Seeing other eaten and killed by the Jabberwock (up to semi-detailed); Prologue starts with Aviva recalling a man stabbing her with the intent of killing her and her sister; Mentions of murders, murderers, deaths, poisons, & fires; Mentions of deaths of family members & grieving them and other loved ones (semi-detailed); Mentions of stealing & thieves.

Only language is mentions of curses said but are not written out; A man calls Aviva a “witch”; A few mentions of it being said that Aviva was a witch (she was a healer).

A handful or so of Kisses (one being up to detailed); Touches, Embraces, & Cuddling (including for warmth while noticing the other’s body, up to semi-detailed); Noticing muscles, curves, etc. (up to semi-detailed).

Note: I received a copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.

I absolutely love retellings and To Escape a Wonderland definitely doesn't disappoint! I love the twisted, "shattered" if you will, take on Alice and Wonderland! It was twisty and deliciously dark (but not too dark 😉) and it was fun having some of the same concepts and themes from the original reimagined into a new story. Also, Alice and Bayne were such fantastic characters and I loved seeing their relationship develop. It didn't feel rushed which is impressive for the length of the book!

Overall, To Escape a Wonderland was such a fun, quick read! I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a fresh, new take on Alice in Wonderland!

To Escape a Wonderland is part of The Shattered Tales series, a collection of standalone fantasy reads from a variety of authors. However, it’s also part of the Forest Tales series by Cece Louise, a collection of clean standalone YA fairytale retellings with connected characters. I was thrilled to head back into the Forest Tales series! It’s such an original and entertaining collection, and I was dying to see how some of my favorite characters were doing. I wasn’t disappointed. Though the story focuses on minor characters in previous books, we also have some of the major characters from the same books as minor characters in this one.

The story follows Bayne, a soldier who was terrorized by the jabberwocky in The Jabberwocky Princess, and Avi, a woman who was presumed dead by her beloved sister. Both are strong and determined characters with traumatic pasts, but neither is defeated by the things they’ve gone through. They’re survivors, though they are haunted by the past.

Bayne and Avi find themselves thrust together on a treacherous journey. Taken captive, forced to confront a deadly monster that has terrorized Bayne in the past, and brought to a magical world where nothing makes sense, Avi and Bayne must depend on each other and use all of their skills to survive. It’s an engaging story that includes elements from Alice In Wonderland while still feeling fresh and new.

The romance between Bayne and Avi is, of course, my favorite part of the novel. I love a swoon-worthy love story, and this enemies to companions to lovers romance is the best!!. They are kindred spirits, and the way they slowly fall in love with each other is delightful. I really love the vulnerability Bayne shows when confiding in Avi. He is not a man who opens up to others, and his duty to the crown is the only thing that matters to him, so to see him take an emotional risk like this is just lovely. She is the only person he can truly be himself in front of without fear of judgment, and when he tells her about his past and reveals things he’s never told anyone before, you can see how hard it is for him. But his feelings for Avi are stronger.

Avi is the same. Afraid to reveal herself and some of her mistakes from the past, she finds a kindred spirit in Bayne. They understand each other well and respect all of the hardships and sacrifices each went through. Their deep connection and the way they slowly revealed their feelings to each other made my heart so happy.

The world-building is really cool, too, and I like that the story takes us to another unique place in the series. The Alice in Wonderland vibes are fantastic, and I loved the references to characters, plot elements, and even poems from the original work.

With an exciting plot, dynamic characters, and a sweet and romantic love story, To Escape a Wonderland is a fantastic read! Special thanks to Cece Louise for providing me with a copy of the book, all thoughts are my own.

Wonderland! We're going to Wonderland! Whenever I see a Wonderland retelling I just have to read it. Wonderland is one of the most amazing fictional worlds ever imagined and I love how every author finds their own way to create a new version of the world. I was therefore really happy that I got an arc for this book. I'm going back to Wonderland!

I'm really impressed with how the author of this story manages to find a new and original way to tell the very well known tale of Wonderland. I don't wanna give too much away, this book is one of those books that becomes more fun the less you know about it, but I like how so many original elements of the story are present and yet present in a totally different way.

I have to admit that I felt a little lost during the first few chapters. It's clear that this book is part of a bigger world and I think it's even more fun if you've read these other books. However, I quickly got sucked into the story and the moment we were really entering Wonderland it became almost impossible to put the book down.

I also quite liked the romance in this book. The characters needed a little time to really fall for each other, despite the instant attraction, and therefore it was easy to understand as a reader why they were fighting so hard for each other, why they were doing what they were doing and why they made the choices they were making.

I will certainly check out the other books by this author and I'll get myself a physical copy of this book soon to place into my Alice in Wonderland themed bookcase!

A twist on Alice in Wonderland

I think this intriguing clean Alice in Wonderland retelling  is the most fulfilling if read after Desperate Forrest, Saving Vengeance and Jabberwoky Princess with Saving Vengeance being a newsletter sign up novela. It can stand alone but characters from these 3 stories are in their HEA during this tale. I haven't read many Alice in wonderland retellings but this one was delightful. I loved the way that Wonderland was built into the world from the world building in Jabberwoky Princess. This tale features self forgiveness, self awareness and a cute bunny named Teacup! Avi and Bayne find themselves navigating a Topsy turvy world with lots of nods and bits from the original Alice in Wonderland but with a lovely twist and must confront thier past that they have been running from before they can move forward. I received an ARC from the author but my review is honest and my own opinion.

This was a fun reimagining of Alice in Wonderland! I haven’t read the original in years, but I enjoyed recognizing elements throughout the story. Avi and Bayne both come with baggage from the past and I enjoyed seeing them grow from their past mistakes while experiencing the tipsy turvy world of Wonderland.

I’ve read most of Cece Louise’s other books and it was fun to be in the world again and see other characters from past books.

Thanks to the author for the eARC. All opinions are my own.

This was a fun spin on Alice in Wonderland. Avi and Bayne were cute together while constantly caring for eachother from the beginning. I liked the creativity of the story and how some of my favorite things from the original tale were in this one. Definitely another fun read by Cece Louise! Thank you to the author for sending me a copy. Looking forward to the other books in the series.

I was given an arc of this book and was not required to write a review.

This was a crazy tale of Wonderland but one I enjoyed devouring. Alice in Wonderland has always been one of my favorite classics and is still one I go to watch when needing a pick me up. This did not disappoint in plot, scene description or originality. Aviva and Bayne were great characters to following along with and get to know but I do wish we could have seen a little more of the Red Queen and her Knights scenes but in all I was completely satisfied. I love reading retells and this will be one I will look for to add to my Alice in Wonderland shelf among my collection.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

5 dazzling stars out of 5

This book was a gem. It’s a precious stone.

My first read by Cece Louise has become one of my favourite books of all time.

Alice in Wonderland is far from being my favourite tale, but it is one I thoroughly enjoy in retellings. Cece Louise’s story delivered more than I could ever have imagined. Full of fleshed out, human and flawed characters, the story gripped me from beginning to end. It held lessons about learning from the past without letting it overcome you, about friendship, trust, true love and the value of family and grief.

I loved this book.

I read it slowly during some of the busiest days of work and it was very enjoyable relief.

Thank you Cece Louise for this amazing story.

Content wise, the book was absolutely clean, with only two or three kisses described as “passionate” and nothing more.

To close, here is my favourite quote from this gem of a story:

“Time is a peculiar thing. No one knows how much is promised to us—how many turns of the clock we get until it winds no more.
Yes, time is perhaps the strangest gift we’ve been given. So easy to squander, yet so hard to pass when we most want it to. We’re so often late for things that truly matter, yet right on time for things that don’t. We wait unceasingly for the future, then lament how quickly the past is gone.
Time, indeed, is a peculiar thing.”

Isn’t it beautiful?

I really enjoyed this book, I loved the character growth, the twists, the red queen!! It was a great fairytale.
Unlike the last author in this shattered tales series this author didn't advertise her other books the entire way through, instead only slipping in a little at the end to entice you to look into their other books, this is how its supposed to be done.
Overall a good book which makes me want to know what the next author will decide

This book is part of the Shattered Tales Series and this one is about Alice in Wonderland. The author does a great job throwing us into a crazy world where nothing seems to be the same and reality is skewed. A solid 3.5 stars for me! If you enjoy retellings then pick this up!

This book was definitely unique and different. I don't think I've ever read a book this strange before. The story was interesting, but i just felt that something was missing. The romance was lacking, and I didn't sense any chemistry between them. Even though this is an Alice in Wonderland retelling, the story was all over the place. The book seemed slow to me and didn't really provoke my interest. I just couldn't connect with the story or characters. It seems this book just wasn't really my cup of tea.

I received an ARC, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Aviva was deceived by a man who she thought loved her only to have him kill his brother the king to take his place and ordered her to be killed. Somehow she survived being stabbed and later on was en route back to her home country when she was stopped by a knight who recognized the horse she was on. Shortly thereafter they were surrounded by the man who had stabbed her and his friends. This man wanted the knight to help him contain the Jabberwocky who the knight had tamed. Knowing it was the only way to save their lives, Aviva agreed.
However, she and the man who had stabbed her earlier looked into the eyes of the Jabberwocky and the only way the knight could save her was to look into the eyes of the dying Jabberwocky and try and find her in this mad world created in their minds.

What a exciting tale this was! It truly shows how much our past fears and regrets can drag us down if we let them instead of recognizing our mistakes and forging ahead.

I really enjoyed this marvelous story by Cece and heartily and enthusiastically recommend it to one and all! I also invite you to check out Cece’s other two series. The Forest Tales series of which this book takes place and the Happily Ever After series as well.
I have read all of them and loved them! You will love them as much as you loved this book believe me!
In this dark and gloomy world we’re living in right now, we need books which can elevate us and make us feel good even if it’s only while we’re transported into a world we’re reading about!

I urge you to read all of Cece’s books for I know you’ll not regret it! You’ll be so touched by them that you’ll be telling your family and friends they need to read these books as well!

What a bright ray of sunshine Cece casts in our gloomy world by making our lives brighter as a result!
Don’t pass up this opportunity to be caught up in this
wonderful feeling of knowing you’ve read an author you truly love and want to read more of!

If you're a fan of Alice in Wonderland, this tale is for you.

Taking place in the Forest Tales setting, Aviva is saved from death for a second chance at doing the right thing. Because, previously, she overlooked the odd requests of her boyfriend Abrax and several people died.

Sir Bayne is a by-the-book knight who recognizes Aviva's horse as belonging to the princess of Fernshire. He detains her until he realizes she is heading to Tovar, where he desires to make a fresh start.

Soon they encounter the knight who tried to kill Aviva, and he compels them to loose the Jabberwocky, a dire dragon.

The dragon's gaze, like a basilik, sends them into the looking glass land, and the true adventure begins. "Nothing is as it seems," the mad hatters advice is the clue they must remember.

A Christian tale of forgiveness, not only of others but of yourself.

“Oh time, you fickle friend.”

🐇~Characters~🐇
(Aviva AKA Alice) FMC USED TO BE PRINCESS OPAL'S MAID I liked her for the most part she was sometimes annoying though.

(Bayne) MMC EX HEAD KNIGHT OF FERNSHIRE
Hmm what do I say about him IDK I guess I liked him.

(Kartoff) THE KNIGHT TASKED TO KILL AVIVA BY KING ABRAX Omg I hated this guy.

(The mad hatter) He lives in the forest in a small house with a little white rabbit called teacup Idk he was just ok.

I’d do whatever it took to keep her safe.

⏱️~Quotes~⏱️

Unease coiled in my stomach the more I watched him. So like Bayne, but so not. He seemed almost unhinged.

I stared at the flasks he’d given me. They were dark glass, and each had a tag wrapped with twine around its neck with the instructions Drink Me written in a childlike hand. It was odd, but then again, the man before me had a childlike quality to him.

a small dot of white appeared on the ground between the dark foliage. A white rabbit.

“He didn’t hurt you in any way, did he?”“No, he didn’t hurt me.” I managed to keep my voice calm, despite the internal reaction I was having to his nearness. How was it that I could so readily feel the heat from his skin while in this dreamlike state? Our bodies weren’t even here, but mine was still very aware of his.

The feel of his hand on my arm and his tall, solid frame beside me flooded me with comfort. So much so, that I gently extracted my arm from his grip. Heaven help me, I was becoming far too dependent on him.

I don’t believe he held any fondness for me either.” “Then he doesn’t know you,” Avi said matter- of- factly. “And you do?” My question was offhanded, almost scoffing— not toward her, but more toward myself. I’d never intended to open up to her— to anyone— but now that I had, I couldn’t take it back. It was unfamiliar and uncomfortable, but in a way, a relief. “I’m starting to.” Avi’s thumb grazed my knuckles, causing the hairs on my arms to stand up. Almost as if her touch, her words, her very presence were rousing me after a long hazy sleep. “And what I’m finding is nothing like I expected.”

I could no longer deny that I hadn’t lost it to him, piece by broken piece, every moment since we’d started this crazy journey. Bayne had taken those pieces and put them back together, making my heart whole once more, something I hadn’t even believed was possible until he’d done it.

“Your mistakes don’t make you unlovable, Avi. They’re a part of you, but they’re not all of you. They don’t change how I feel about you. I know who you really are.”

❣️~What I liked~❣️
The map, The dedication, the cover, It's dual POV so we get Bayne and Aviva's perspectives which is nice, The inclusion of the Jabberwocky poem, The croquet in the garden scene, The epilogue.

“I’ll drive you madder than a hatter . . . Once we break, you’ll surely shatter.”

🫖~What i disliked~🫖
The fact that a big portion of the book doesn't take place in wonderland, The chapters are so long like twenty plus pages for most chapters,
The court politics, *SLIGHT SPOILER The fact that Cheshire cat is actually a torture weapon that somehow turns into a cat with a painted on smile END OF SPOILER*,

“I reflect the darkest light. A stain of red on purest white . . .”

♟️~Trigger/content warnings~♟️
Murder, attempted murder, death of a family member, Torture, hostage situation, blood, Death,
Burns, Medical treatment, Mild Animal Abuse (A character stabs a sword through a cats paw in self defense), Head injury, Attempted Poisoning, Almost drowning, Stabbing, nearly dying,

Why was it that we could so easily believe the best about each other, but not believe it about ourselves?

I've read everything Cece has written, and this book outshines them all. So much wow! I've missed her fairytale world, and in To Escape a Wonderland, Cece jumps through her fairytale world into another fairytale world - Wonderland, but like you've never seen it before. It's a place of beauty and nightmares, where time is altered and yet ticking away, a place where your past comes back to haunt you while simultaneously creating space for memories to be redeemed. This is, above all, a story of redemption.

Aviva, a healer, has spent years regretting the role she played in her sister's death and the murder of a just and good king. Sir Bayne, a knight, also has regrets, even more than what readers learned in The Jabberwocky Princess. I should also note that we met Aviva in Saving Vengeance, so both of the main characters and some portion of their backstory is known to avid readers, however, as with all of Cece's books, this can be read as a standalone. You just won't want to stop with a single book once you learn there are more amazing books with these characters. But I digress, so back to my spoiler-free review...

Aviva and Bayne are thrown together almost as soon as the book starts. Kartoff, the most evil of all evil knights, finds them and forces them to take him to the last living Jabberwocky. The Jabberwocky kills and, even worse, turns people to madness, trapping them in their minds, trapping them in Wonderland. Cece's Wonderland is a magnificent place, like living in a dream in which your subconscious takes your strong memories and integrates them together with Lewis Carroll's fantasies. It's fantastic and frightening and amazing and dangerous and wonderful all at the same time. Of course, I wanted them to escape, but at the same time, I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

The romance was also beautiful. Two people who carry tremendous weight help each other make peace with their pasts and learn to see themselves through the eyes of someone who can see them for so much more than their past - something everyone needs in their lives. I'm so thankful for people like that in stories and in real life.

Time is a peculiar thing.

Reading this book made me think of all the things I'm so thankful for. The gift of Wonderland, and of a good story, is the reminder that time is limited and precious and we should make the most of what we have been given. I did say it was a story of redemption. Perhaps even for us.

I received an ARC from the author and reviewed the book because it's absolutely fabulous and demanded that I do so. :)

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. To Escape a Wonderland by Cece Louise has Alice and Bayne trapped in Wonderland and trying to escape.

Will Alice and Bayne get out before they are driven mad?

Alice
Alice was a maid for Princess Opal before she left to go in search of a sister that she longed thought was dead. She encounters Bayne, and he decides to keep Alice company on her way back. I love Alice and Bayne in all the forms they show each other throughout the story. Alice has baggage that she doesn't want anyone else to know. Not only that, but she has a deep, dark secret that she knows will keep her from experiencing joy ever again.

Bayne
Sir Bayne was the head knight of Fernshire until he quit because of his recent bout of madness from looking into the Jabberwocky's eyes. Not many people know much about Bayne, and that's because, much like Alice, he keeps people at arm's length away. He blames many things that went wrong with his family on himself instead of focusing on the good. Bayne tries to do the same with Alice, but it becomes impossible when, thanks to his knightly ways, he pops back into the world he escaped from to save Alice. Except if they don't find a way to escape without the help of a Jabberwocky in the real world, then they might both be doomed to stay put in that world, going mad.

The slow-going romance between these two is awesome. I loved their banter and how they tried not to cross that line.

Five Stars
I am giving five stars to To Escape a Wonderland by Cece Louise, and I'm recommending it. Ms. Louise brought another exciting tale to her Forest Tales series, and I loved being back with some familiar characters. I have always loved how Ms. Louise can put a new spin on a fairy tale that makes it unique to her world but makes sure it still fits in with what she has already established.

I loved seeing what happens to the people who have looked into the Jabberwocky's eyes and not be eaten by the Jabberwocky. It's a thrilling place, that's for sure. I loved the elements from the Alice in Wonderland tale that made it into the book while still being true to the story. Ms. Louise did a fantastic job, and I can't wait to see what else she does.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of To Escape a Wonderland by Cece Louise.

Until the next time,

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. This is the first book of the author's that I've read and I certainly will be reading more! While characters and events from the author's The Forest Tales Series appear/are referenced, this book can be read as a standalone. It's the third book in The Shattered Tales collection, which is made up of 12 standalone books by 12 different authors. The book's blurb lets you know what to expect, though do be aware that loss is a theme explored. To Escape a Wonderland is a wonderful Alice in Wonderland retelling told through Aviva and Bayne's pov.

I haven't read many Alice in Wonderland retellings but this one had me hooked from the start. It was fast paced and full of action yet not in a rushed way. Because of her past, Aviva carried a lot of self blame and she didn't sit around feeling sorry for herself. She may have gotten herself in situations but she wanted to fight her own battles, which is why she didn't take too kindly to Bayne when they first met. As a knight, Bayne had a sense of duty and code of conduct that he kept. While he also didn't have a positive opinion of Aviva when they first met, he knew he had to help her. Like Aviva, his past also had a hold of him and influenced him so the more time they spent in the enchanted land, the easier it was for them to bond.

Because of how they first meet, they had a slight enemies to lovers vibe. Their personalities caused them to be at odds but it didn't last too long. Once they are captured by outlaws, they are forced to work together - and work well together. Becoming unlikely allies and being trapped in the enchanted land makes it easy for their feelings for the other to shift, though they don't act on them right away. For some, I guess the romance can feel fast but, aside from having to learn to trust each other, they each recognized something in the other that allowed a strong connection to form. I enjoyed seeing them have their secrets yet slowly confide in the other. The romance is a clean one consisting of no foul language and only kissing. The violence is PG-13 and includes fantasy violence but it's not overly descriptive. The conflict of the story was so good and kept me guessing what would happen next. Just when you think you may know where things are headed a surprise would happen. I did have some guesses about the plot but the way reveals happened weren't like I expected. The antagonists of the story are the type readers will love to hate and I especially liked that overcoming self blame was one of the themes of the story. The message was a great one and I really enjoyed this retelling. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I've not read many (if any) fairytale retellings but I always see lots that look amazing and having loved CeCe's contemporary romances I've wanted to read her fantasy/retelling series for a while. When I saw her posting about this series/collection of novellas, where each one focuses on retelling a different fairytale, each by a different author, I thought it sounded like the perfect place to start and now I officially love retellings!
As I said, I've not read any before so I had no idea what to expect; no idea how the fairytale would be a part of it. Would it be basically the same but in a modern era? Would it be a completely different storyline but with some elements from the fairytale? What I got was amazing! A different story but with so many similar/familiar elements and a super sweet romance it was like a hug in a book. You've got a Jabberwock(y), the Mad Hatter, White Rabbit, Cheshire Cat, Red Queen and even a Bandersnatch but all with a twist. You even got the Jabberwocky poem quoted in there in such a clever way and if there's anyone who thinks they can read/hear that poem without smiling, no they can't. The way the Wonderland worked was so good! Just as mad/nonsensical as the original and with some added elements that fitted so well.
Aviva and Bayne were both amazing characters who I loved so much. Their backstories and stories together were so fitting and so sweet. Both excellently strong characters, and although Bayne was quite literally a knight, Aviva was strong herself and didn't always need protecting, she did her own fair share of protecting and it was the perfect balance. I don't know how to explain how much I loved this novella!
The only thing I didn't like was getting to the end and discovering it wasn't as standalone as I'd thought... I knew the Tales didn't relate to each other so it doesn't matter that this is the 3rd to release and I've not read 1/2 yet. But I did wrongly assume that it didn't relate to CeCe's other series I mentioned earlier. You all know I hate reading books out of order whether they say "standalone" or not; if any of the characters relate I want to hear their stories in order. Part of me is a little bit happy though because some of the characters at the end seemed like they had good stories and I thought "damn, I wish this was like book 1 of a series and we'd get to hear their story next" and yet actually, I totally can now go and read their story! So I'm a little bit pleased, but I wish I'd read it first haha. For anyone else though, you don't need to have read them to read this, there's nothing in here that won't make sense without it.

Cece Louise’s newest epic, To Escape a Wonderland, is a fresh new take on Lewis Carroll’s highly acclaimed Alice in Wonderland. Cece masterfully intertwines elements such as the Jabberwocky poem into her own story without detracting from either tale in any way. In fact, she weaved Lewis’s beloved characters and Wonderland elements into her book so intricately that it would be impossible to tell one tale without the other. Yet her characters are so unique that it almost seems like her tale was the original and Lewis Carroll’s the shadow!

To Escape a Wonderland, is part of the 12 book multi-authored Shattered Tales collaboration, a collection of clean, no-spice fairytale retellings. The premise behind this anthology of novellas is to take a well-known element of the story and shatter it by telling it in a completely different way. Some authors chose to shatter one element, some turned the story on its head and Cece has you wondering whether you ever really knew Wonderland at all!

Although the characters featured in To Escape a Wonderland appear in previous books in a series, Cece included just enough background information to make it unnecessary to have to read another book first for context, while at the same time not being overwhelming, proving her prowess as a writer and leaving her readers begging for more!

Nevertheless, although The Shattered Tales collection does feature a few light and fluffy fairytales this is not one of them. I would recommend this book for ages 14 and up as Cece showcases the darker side of Wonderland in her saga and one of the characters indulges in a fair amount of “light torture” when he is interrogating another. However, although this whipping is so well described that it might make you almost feel physical pain as a reader, it is not so graphic and explicit that it will give you nightmares. In the end it was perfectly realistic without being overboard, and I was very impressed by how well it was written!

Other triggers that you may wish to look out for are madness; brutality and violence; captivity and magic to name a few. And some of the tropes celebrated in this fantastical adventure are enemies to lovers, clean romance, dark secret, emotional scars and he falls first. As far as I can recall there was no swearing unless it was in-world language.

In conclusion, I must admit that I have rarely been so impressed by a fairytale retelling, and this particular one had me wishing to read Alice in Wonderland all over again. Cece celebrated Lewis’s world while making it uniquely her own and I for one cannot wait to revisit her characters through her other books. This was the first time I have had the privilege of reading a Cece Louise novel and I received an ARC in return for an honest review – positivity was not required. However, this phantasmagorical fable left me yearning for more of Cece’s writing and she is now on my permanent re-read list as she is one of the best authors I have ever come across!

Did you ever want an Alice in Wonderland story that felt topsy-turvy without feeling like you've lost your mind? What about one with romance between Alice and her bodyguard? Throw in a murderous Chesire Cat, and you've got this book.
I never thought I'd be a fan of Alice in Wonderland, but this book gave me a new perspective. Wonderland stories are usually so full of mind-boggling-nonsense that it's hard to keep your head on straight, but this one includes the fun of Wonderland with a heavy dose of reality that keeps it grounded. There are still the elements of the story that you love (the Chesire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, the Red Queen), but with Bayne and Aviva (Alice)'s practicality, you're not so swept away by the silliness.
I loved how both characters had traumatic backgrounds and legitimate mistakes they'd made, but through it, they became strong, kind people who fought for a better world. Bayne is an absolute sweetheart, and he's the perfect bodyguard-turned-love-interest. Aviva was sweet and sassy without being mean, and she's a wonderful fit for serious Bayne.
On the plot side, I was a bit underwhelmed, unfortunately. I did like some of the cool aspects, like being trapped in a world of madness because of looking at a Jabberwock, but I felt that some things weren't explained enough. The Red Queen scene at the end should have honestly been longer to really get more of an emotional impact, and there was no explanation for Laurel's showing up at the end. (I get that this is part of a series, though, so I'll just have to read the other books for that.) I also felt that things at the end were wrapped up a bit too neatly in an easy bow, but hey, at least there's a happy ending.
All in all, I liked this cute but tense Alice in Wonderland retelling. It's got heart, creativity, and courage, as well as an adorable and clean romance. It's perfect for a fall fairy tale retelling. Oh, and I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are mine alone.

To Escape a Wonderland:
An Alice in Wonderland Retelling
By Cece Louise

She made a mistake, she thought she was in love, but it cost her everything. Now she lives in another country trying to hide who she was. But the past has caught up to her, a past she'd rather forget.

Bayne has just given up his role as a knight, he needs a fresh start away from the suspicious, accusatory stares. But when he comes across a woman in need of assistance, or so he thinks, he has to come to her aid.

When the kingdom is threatened by outlaws, Alice's true identity and mistakes are revealed. But she's determined to help Bayne in any way possible to protect those she has come to care for. As Avi and Bayne plan for a way to thwart not only the man who tried to kill her years before but to stop the Jabberwocky he seeks. But Avi forgets one very important thing - to never look a Jabberwocky in the eyes.

Drawn into a world of madness, where nothing is as it seems, Bayne and Avi must battle their fears if they hope to survive this wonderland they are trapped in.

To Escape a Wonderland is delightful, interest grabbing read from the opening lines. Two broken, guilt-ridden people must work through the mistakes of their pasts and join forces if they hope to save the kingdom they call home. This is Wonderland as you have never before experienced it. The scenery, the characters just pop off the page as the story unfolds. If you love fairy tale retellings you won't want to miss this offering from The Shattered Tales. This is a standalone title so you can enjoy without reading the other books in the series or the author's Forest Tales series (now on my TBR list!)

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This was my first from Ms. Louise and it was such an exciting adventure! Alice once fell in love with the wrong man and paid a devastating price. Now she hides a dark secret and is desperately searching for the sister she left behind. Bayne, a former knight, is looking for a fresh start after he almost lost his life and mind. A run-in with a thieving maidservant changes everything. When they are captured by outlaws and forced to partake in a traitorous plot, they find themselves lost in a perilous enchanted land with no escape in sight. They must learn to trust each other and themselves to be freed from this twisted world.
This was a fun book! I have not read as many Alice in Wonderland inspired stories and it was cool to see the inspiration woven through the story. Alice was so vibrant and determined. She was so determined to find her sister and willing to just go after her. She was so brave, even in facing her own past. I loved seeing Bayne’ story unfold. There was so much more to him than I originally realized and it was sweet to watch them connect. They both had a lot to learn and I appreciated getting to see them grow, even in a shorter story. I loved the twisty magic of the world. It was a lovely way to use the inspiration for the character development!
This is a magical romantasy novella inspired by Alice in Wonderland! It has some fantasy violence and trauma that occurs because of it, as well as kissing. It is a standalone novella, but connected to other books by this author.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.

Years ago, Alice fell in love with the wrong man, leading to an attack that left her sister dead, and her nearly so. Now she has the chance to make things right again, but she’ll have to make a clean escape with the princess’s horse first.
Bayne has been a loyal knight for years, but an encounter with a jabberwock nearly stole his life and his sanity. He quits his job and sets off in search of something he’s not sure of. Instead, he finds a maid with the princess’s horse.
Bandits trick them into participating in a treacherous plot, and the pair end up in a topsy-turvy world where nothing makes sense. Will Alice learn to trust again and will Bayne share the truth of his past with her? If they can’t work together, they might be stuck in the wonderland forever.

“Why was it that we could so easily believe the best about each other, but not believe it about ourselves?”

This was a really fun story, and I loved seeing how the many elements of Wonderland were brought in. Also there’s a gorgeous color map at the start, which is always a win in my book.
Bayne and Alice were cute to watch together, from their initial frenemies stance to learning to trust each other to falling in love.
At the beginning, Alice sets out in search of her sister; this is never resolved in the book, and we only get the answer to this in the epilogue, without any of the details to answer our many questions.
Cece Louise did an amazing job shattering the story of Alice in Wonderland, and I can’t wait to read more by her.

4.5 Roses
A few kisses
Characters swear, but nothing on the page
Minor injuries, a character is beaten for information, a couple of non-descriptive deaths.

(Thank you to the author for the ARC of this book. This is my honest review.)

*Read through to the end!

-Author CeCe Louise has built an engaging Alice in Wonderland retelling. I was hooked early on; I wanted to know Aviva and Bayne’s backstories.

-We get a determined and resilient FMC (female main character), and Bayne (MMC) is a great complement with his strong yet gentle soul. So chivalrous. Their chemistry builds slowly, yet perfectly. Bayne is an incredibly brave knight; having just come out of his entrapment (an entrapment that ensnared his mind) with the Jabberwock, a terrifying dragon-like creature, he willingly gives his mind back to its clutches, courageously going after Avi. To save each other and the kingdom of Fernshire, they have to work together.

-There is one obstacle after another after they enter their dreamlike state of being. They face each new challenge with courage and wit. There are also several instances of foreshadowing that are nicely placed.

-I love the dual points of view between Avi and Bayne. It allows us to venture into each of their true thoughts and feelings, instead of guessing from the perception of one or the other.

-This isn’t your typical fluffy love story; there is pain, battles, and a dark cloud hanging over most scenes. Through it all, the story is still filled with bright elements like hope, cooperation, sacrifice, and love.

***Good news! If you’d like to read a FREE prequel to To Escape a Wonderland, all you have to do is download the novella from the author’s link! 👏🏻
*She also has another book, Desperate Forest, that follows the storyline of two characters introduced at the end of To Escape a Wonderland.
*Annnd another book, Jabberwocky Princess, that includes Opal’s (another To Escape a Wonderland character) story.

To Escape A Wonderland by Cece Louise is a retelling of Alice In Wonderland and I was curious to see what this book would be. It is a part of The Shattered Tales series, a collection of standalone fairytales, where authors have taken a fairytale and made it their own.

The story starts with Aviva (great name by the way), who has to run for her life. Years later the knight Bayne meets a mysterious woman/thief and they come to an understanding: he will protect her on her quest as he has nothing better to do ad because that’s what knights do.

From the first I was hooked, the story did not have the feel of Alice in Wonderland (yet), but the story was great. There was mystery from the very first pages and the banter between Bayne and Avi/Alice was a joy to read. When they have to escape a monster, that's where the retelling really started. I loved how Cece Louise made the book Alice In Wonderland her own. You can recognize pieces of the original story, for example the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter and the tea party. Avi is a lovely character and Bayne is the typical knight, ready to defend a woman, but thankfully Avi can defend herself. During the story they get more respect for the other one, and they help eachother overcome their past.

The worldbuilding is a little bit dark, but really cool, with monsters, and the writing style is great. It is a short novel, but a very nice one. It’s a swoony love story, and an enemies to lovers story as well, all in a fairyworld.

I love retellings and found To Escape A Wonderland a fun and wonderful surprising novel, with a flowing writing style, a great FMC, with humor, magic, drama, and a book I can really recommend.
