you did it Kay!!! you’re a published author <3 i’m so proud of you and so happy i got to read your debut novel!

my girl does not deserve criticism or judgement some people have given her. Two Empty Barrels deserves a whole essay response, honestly. i didn’t write an ACTUAL essay, but bear with me because this is a bit lengthy.

get off your lazy ol’ bums and go read this book right now.

with that being said, here is my review 💅

i love how all the clan leaders have god/goddess names and clan members have minor Greek names. it was a really interesting concept and added to the world building. the characters are SO GOOD. i felt like i was in the same room with them in ever scene. you really made them come to life. i love the core four so much (Kate, Kai, Drew, and Erin), as well as the minor characters. the banter between literally any character and me smiling and holding laughter back.

this is a beast of a book at 700+ pages, but every single word is worth reading. the first 30% in, i was like “oh okay, this is good,” and then anything after that, I was like “NO THIS IS REALLY GOOD.” and 700+ pages is so challenging. i’m absolutely shocked with how well done it was. there was so much tension and excitement. as much as i loved the action in this book, i love the chapters where the characters are just kind of living their lives with each other. i will say that there were times when it felt a little slow, but i pushed myself through it because i literally couldn’t stop reading this if i wanted to. i loved the story and characters so much that i would remind myself “DO IT FOR KAI AND KATE” and i did. it was so worth it.

the themes in this book are heavy, but something that needs to be talked about and brought to people’s attention. these topics shouldn’t be hidden because people who have gone through sexual assault shouldn’t feel like they need to hide it from other people. it brings a deeper and more intense meaning to the story. for other people with certain experiences, it may be triggering, so the trigger warnings were very helpful.

back to happy stuff—

Kai and Kate. Kai and Kate. Kai and Kate. KAI AND KATE. they had no freaking right to be so perfect. their bond, their flaws, their banter, their little moments—i couldn’t get enough of it. the dual pov just adds to it. seeing how down bad both of them are for each other?? *chefs kiss* i want like a book completely dedicated to just cutesy little one shots of them or something. i like how realistic their relationship is. they make mistakes. they comfort each other. they aren’t afraid to be emotional in front of each other. the scene where Kai breaks down in front of her was one of the most heartbreaking but also comforting scene. it’s a very emotional relationship. my boy Kai does not want to stop kissing her (i’m not complaining) THE BUTTERFLIES THOUGH???

and then there’s Drew and Erin. the side couple you wish wasn’t a side couple 😭 i loved their characters individually first, but when a romantic relationship started, i was giggling and kicking my feet. i love them so much and hope to see more of them in the next book. they’re relationship was interesting to me. i liked that they had previous history together.

the story is very much character driven. i honestly really liked it this way. i felt a deep connection with all the characters, their wants, their flaws. Kay is an amazing writer to be able to make me, as the reader, feel so much for her characters. i cannot wait to see more of Kay’s work. i know she will find success with her books. also, go follow her on instagram! @kay.lee.author is her handle.

(i didn’t read over this review so there’s probably typos or something)
