Great story with a complex plot. I did not guess ‘whodunnit’.

The setting, in a National Forest, is very well described. It sounds lovely. And I enjoy a setting that is foreign to my life. Hiking for days, rock-climbing, camping not in a campground, these are foreign to me.

And the life of a forest ranger sounds like very hard work, but the main character, Dan, loves it. That’s good - I hate a whiny main character.

I did wonder why Cal was angry with Dan so often. It seemed out of character.
