If you think I'm a monster hunter with a death wish, you haven't been paying attention. Ava Ashe goes down fighting if she goes down at all. Which is why when a gang drags me into the darkest parts of Fae's catacombs, I fight like I'm already dead. Because the only thing I have left to lose isn't my life. It's my sister's.
So I fight. And I use everything I have at my disposal to escape, including drugs laced with magic, because the fae who are forcing me to kill their king will not accept death as an excuse. And by the time the dark enforcer of the Shadow Court—a fae so ruthless even his own kind fear him—comes to reclaim me, I'm nothing but a quaking shell of pain and addiction. Death is a mere breath away.
He's grumpy and demanding and still somehow hot AF, and I know he's only nursing me back to health because those who took me, took me on his watch. But I let him tend me. I let him pretend he cares, and I hope to be healthy enough to commit the atrocities they want of me before they make Kit pay for my recklessness. It's just that I have a feeling escaping the catacombs isn't the worst Fae has to throw at me.
Because I might have barely survived the flesh markets, but I'm not sure I'll survive the dark enforcer's nursing.

Following straight on from the tragic events in Realm of Shadows, Ava is struggling with the trauma she endured and the after effects of the bloodmist needed to survive the atrocities in the catacombs. On the journey back to the Shadow Court the darkness and violence continues as they're confronted with monsters lurking in the shadows and lethal fights that will push them to their limits. But the most dangerous thing might be the increasing sexual tension and growing connection between Ava and Blade, but a Hunter can't love a Monster...

This is book three of The Iron King’s Assassin series and Ava Ashe has been rescued from the horrors of the catacombs, where she had been taken after being kidnapped by a gang of base Fae, by the Fae’s Dark Enforcer of the Shadow Court, Blade. She had endured numerous tortures and fought for her life by any means available, including using the powerful drug Bloodmist, which she had kicked in the mortal world, only to become addicted here once again, but she had to survive to do what she had promised, or her sister’s life would be forfeit. She had been dragged from her mentor, Gideon, and hired as an assassin for an impossible job, to kill the Iron King! The Fae who hired her wouldn’t take her death or any excuse for her delay in arriving at his abode, as he is holding her sister Kit’s life in the balance. She has been taken from her mortal world by another of his son’s, Flint, who has history with Ava. Blade has to watch her go through her withdrawal from Bloodmist before they can travel to his father’s home. Another brother, Mica is waiting for some books they collected on the way, but it is his brother Stone, who comes with the news their father wants to see Ava immediately! Her sister has no idea that she is in a different world and their father, Terran, soon makes it so she cannot leave Fae, having her there when Ava is called to see him. She can’t tell her sister too much, but with their history and Ava’s past behaviour and drug addiction, Kit soon loses it and gets angry with Ava, only for her world to be turned upside down.
Terran, Flint and Stone have neglected to tell Ava much of the details of her mark, the Iron King, and why they have had to bring a female assassin from the mortal realm with no magic, to their world to kill him. Ava and Blade have become somewhat close as he tended to her for days and then travelled together as well, but how much she can trust what he seems to be saying or feeling, is anyone’s guess. Flint is making himself comfortable with her sister, whilst Stone still seems to want Ava, but she is more attracted to Blade, even though she thinks he is going to be the one to kill her after she completes her task. Blade is a Fae feared by most Fae and other creatures in this world, but he also has some unexpected shows of kindness, like in the inn with the six female humans. The time for her to undertake her task is getting closer, as signs of the Days are approaching. An event where one hundred Fae will get powers for a year from the Iron King, but only after al of the base Fae and others give their magic to the Iron King. It is during a short window during this event, that he will be weakened and Ava is to be selected for his harem, to be able to get close enough to kill him. Only problem is there is lots she hasn’t been told about matters and any one of them could get her killed! She expects to go by herself, but now her sister is being involved, to ensure she completes the job, and Blade is being ordered to stay at home. Not something he is happy about. Flint wil be offering Kit as a sacrifice, whilst Stone will offer Ava. Younger brother Mica is much softer than his brothers or father, something they believe makes him weak, but he is the only one that tried to help her and paid a high price. For Blade, Ava is much more than a job and he wants her, but Stone keeps blocking him, wanting her for himself. The time is upon them and we don’t find out what happens until the next book of course! I loved how Blade got caught showing a much softer side to himself and also finally revealing his link with Ava. I can’t wait to see what happens between them, if only Stone would get out of the way! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Realm of illusion kicks off with Ava trying to come down from the effects of the Bloodmist, with Blade by her side, that she had to take in order to survive the catacombs in Realm of Shadow. As they travel back to the castle, Blade’s caring nature towards her and his violent revenge against those that harmed her start to confuse Ava. Why would he care for her beyond trying to keep her alive long enough for her to kill the king? How could she start to feel anything for someone who is keeping her in faery against her will and threatening her sister? Back at the castle Blade’s actions towards Ava and the sexual tension between them confuse her even more. Can she trust him? Then the final bombshell! I hope Ava can learn to trust Blade, let’s go of her fear of falling and starts to believe that she is worthy of love from someone. Steam factor has slightly increased but I need them together!!!
This third installment of The Iron King's Assassin was well written and kept me coming back for more thanks to the engaging story line along with the entertaining characters. I can't wait to see what happens next.

After what she faced Ava is back but a mess. And of course things get crazy as she works to get clean and heal. But no one makes it easy. Lots of trouble, intrigue, surprises and so much more. Lots of fun and dark and wild times and characters.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. The Hellhound Blade had just rescued Ava from the catacombs and now is en route to see the king. Ava isn't doing too well and Blade is trying his hardest to heal her but she is after all a stubborn human. they venture to an area in the woods to pick up books for Mica when the storeowner tell them monsters have been coming thru a portal so they decide to go down to retrieve the books and take out the monsters. When Blade is hurt is makes Avas heart ache and she doesn't know why. Back at the castle, the king wants an audience but Ava is too tired to stand. Mica visits her and casts some magic for her to see. Ava is tired of not being told thr truth of what her mission entrails besides getting rid of the Iron King and she is quite vocal about it. What Ava didn't except was to see her sister Kit there in Fae. An insurance policy of sorts since they gotten back 3 days late. Ava will do what she needs to in order to keep Kit safe eventho her sister doesn't want anything to do with her. With doom upon them will it be enough for Ava to do her job and keep her sister safe of will she condemn their souls to the Fae?
This next book in this series was yet another fantastic installment. It follows straight on from where the previous book ended, so make sure you have read that one first, so you get the full picture of what is going on.
Having survived the catacombs and being rescued by Blade, the dark enforcer, Ava is now struggling with coming down from the effects of the Bloodmist. As an addict, she knows how hard this is going to be on both her body and her mind. Blade, surprisingly, cares for her throughout her ordeal and we get to see a completely different side to him.
On their arrival back at the Shadow Court, Don Sidhe Tannen has a little surprise in store for Ava, just to ensure her cooperation in killing the Iron King once again! And finally she gets some information on how to actually deal with this Iron King, information which may actually be a bit of help this time!
I loved seeing the relationship between Ava and Blade develop into something more than just lust! I did feel for Stone though as you can tell he also has feelings for Ava, but they are not reciprocated in the same way!
Now with the Days finally arriving, it's time for Ava to head to the Iron Palace and begin to put the plans into motion, but I can't imagine it's going to be anywhere near as easy for her as I want it to be! She definitely deserves a bit of happiness after everything she has been through so far in the Fae realm!
I received a copy of this book from the author through BookSprout, but this review is my own, honest one.
The Iron King's Assassin series has been a great from book one to book three. All the characters, twists, secrets and plots have come such a long way, giving us a great series to enjoy. Ava has been rescued from the Catacombs after being kidnapped. While kidnapped Ava has endure so many things, always managing to come out on top to continue on. Blade is watching her go through intense withdrawls from the Bloodmist doing all that can be done to be helpful. I can't wait to see what book 4 brings and have all the characters come full circle.

Oh this was so good!! It's amazing the way Thea navigates us through the story, and the development of all the characters. It was wonderful to see Ava and Blade's relationship grow, and seeing Ava being even more vulnerable. Amazing series, keep them coming, Thea!

This is book 3 if this series and man does it have some serious plot twists and turns!! Ava doesn’t disappoint in her gumption to survive just about anything thrown her way and no shadow court or lower fae are going to start now!!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Fast-paced action, fantastic storytelling, and well-developed characters combine to create a story that is compelling, engrossing, and entertaining. I have enjoyed this series from the start and this book definitely delivers. I am terribly curious as to how this auction is going to go and whether Ava can fulfill her task as assassin!
The character and world development continues and I devoured this book as I am invested in the story and characters at this point. It had some great advancements to the story but I do hope in the next installment that there is a bit more than really slow burn and angst. I am really excited to see what will happen to Ava once she is presented to the King !!.
This book took me through the emotions and truly tugged at my heartstrings. Trigger warning: violence, drug withdrawal issues, and a character blocking moments!
Ava went through so much in this book and had to overcome so much all at once. Ava went on an adventure that event after event occurred. After fighting off some magical creatures, to be captured to be sold at the catacombs, to escaping to deal with being attacked by more magical creatures, to making it back to the castle to learn that her sister was captured to be used as a pawn.
☆ REALM OF ILLUSION ☆ Book #3 The Iron King's Assassin ☆ THEA ATKINSON☆
Thea Atkinson is a Master of her craft. An author who excels as my Dark Themed Queen!
IS IT ALL JUST A REALM OF ILLUSION? CAN AVA TRULY TRUST WHAT SHE SEES THINKS & FEELS WITH THESE FAE?
Book 3 carries on right where Book 2 left off, with Blade caring for Ava, helping her through her withdrawals, using his magic to ease her suffering, but at a cost to himself. He's depleted his 'Natal Magics'. And now they both could be vulnerable. Realm of Illusion is another action-packed roller-coaster ride of adrenalin & action. This series is like being on a runaway train that's left the tracks, you have no idea where the path will lead you!
I adored this book too but missed the over-the-top non-stop action of Book 2, which was about their physical prowess & abilities, but that pace can not be kept up indefinitely. However Book # 3 looks more at the emotional side of our characters & how they interact bringing 'The 3-way love triangle' of Ava, Blade & Stone to the forefront. Add young Mica who seems to have taken a shine to Ms Ashe to the mix, and the whole love story becomes very complicated, but I believe this 3-way finally seems resolved once & for all. But anything is possible. I thoroughly enjoyed the deeper dive into Ava, Blade, Stone & Mica's emotional side & psyche. We see more vulnerability, caring & compassion from each character too. They seem to be leading Book #3 with their hearts rather than heads or should I say 'Daddy's orders'.
And speaking of The characters: Wow, they're so well written, defined & multi-dimensional. Some are like onions, once opened there's layer upon layer. We have the full spectrum here. The good, the bad & the downright ugly, then there's a mixed mash of all the above with some on the path to redemption, while others may be on a path to Hell.
Some start as a complete & utter nightmare from the Depths of Hell or so we're led to believe. It's amazing how a little time together can change one's whole outlook, then feelings change, and they adapt & grow. And through companionship, trust & a little understanding, love can grow & change your perspective because you truly have no control over what family you're born into, and for some, who they must work for. Bound by Blood & Blood Vows of the Shadow Court & Daddy!
A few words from this book have me starting to wonder who the true bad guys are here. Is it the Shadow Court wanting to assassinate the King or is it The Iron King himself? A Fae we are still yet to meet. So far it's a one-sided narrative of the Iron King thus far & so little is known about him. Does anyone else wonder why the Shadow Court is looking to assassinate him? I have a theory I've put to the author, but if I write it here, it could be a major spoiler for Books 4 & 5 if I'm right.
Boy, am I dying for that confrontation between Ava & Ferranus? I'm sure it'll be an epic battle to the death! But whose? Plus, Kit Ava's sister will be there in his haram too, right in harm's way, so will our Hunter's focus be turned & divided? Can Ava keep her mind 100% on assassinating the King & freeing Kit from the Fae Realm?
Are the Fae truly bad or are there shades of grey to their wickedness just like humanity? Or is it our humanity where the fault lies? Are we too soft a species in comparison, not hard enough mentally, emotionally, or physically? Help not harm; Do unto others as you'd have done unto you! Is our humanity the true downfall?
Thea Atkinson is a Master at her craft & is one author who excels as a Dark Themed Queen! And the one I look to when I want to jump into darker worlds with darker themes, characters & fantasy! This dark-fantasy-themed author writes the genre with such sensitivity, power, creativity & care. Makes me wonder if authors can work with their minds in dark places for so long without it bleeding through into their everyday life. When it's at its darkest, Ms Atkinson's frank & occasional brutal creativity leads us down dark paths that I'm always willing to follow. And I'm saying that as a Domestic Violence sufferer.
I'll gladly follow Thea Atkinson's visions, like a beckon of light shining down a dark deserted alleyway. She is a talented writer of resourcefulness, imagination & creativity & I love where her characters lead me, but remember wherever there is 'Darkness', 'Light' will surely follow. Honestly, it's just one of the areas where you come into your goddess-given gift.
As a survivor of domestic violence, when I read Thea's 'Isabella Hush Series' I commented in my review how the scenes to me felt necessary, but so powerful. It was done with great care, taste & class, but that's human-to-human violence with a human 'Scotty' hurting his ex 'Izzy'. It was so well written that survivors of this horrid abuse can cope with it. However I did suggest if you are triggered by DV or sexual assault, that series may not be for you, but there was nothing here in Books, 1, 2, or 3 of The Iron King's Assassin that was triggering in any way shape or form.
Yes, there is violence, even brutality, but it's mostly Fae on Fae or creature. Honestly, I thought it necessary for the storyline & where Ms Atkinson is taking her characters. It's an evolution both for Ava & Blade. Showing us the journey where they have once been & where they now wish to go, and who they wish to become & why. Also, we must remember it's fiction & fantasy. Here in Realm of Illusion, there's nowhere near as much violence as in Book 2. Seriously, Isabella's story, (a related series) was tastefully done & did not trigger me nor did books 1, 2, or 3 of The Iron King Assassin. The violence & payback was spot on. Especially coming from a human Hunter who has been through Hell and a Fae Male who's in animal form hunting those who kidnapped & tried to sell his beloved. For Blade, it's part of his animal instincts, like a wolf hunting a deer, the chase of sport, & yes, it's about revenge too, he will mutilate anything in his way, especially if it means they can never hurt Ava again.
I can't get enough of Ms. Atkinson's detailed world-building of the Fae Realm. Everything from the trails, the forest, the trees & scenery, the creatures of the Fae Realm: The Pooka, the Wendigo, the Zombie Vampires, Trolls, Trowls, Pixies, Lower Fae, High Fae & more. The architecture, the homes made of trees & infused with magic, the Manse, the City, the deadly living vines that'll creep across opened cell doors & windows keeping prisoners locked in cells if they near the open exists, it is pure genius! And then there's the magic dress, a garment Erachne a powerful Fae Sprite designed, infused with a spell crafted especially for Ava & how it changes her appearance beautifying her to entice the King into wanting her. Although this garment is skin tight, it somehow magically hides her weapon (a karambit) strapped to her thigh. Then to top it off, the icing on the cake is Thea's creation of the 'Tri-Ouroborus' in Stone & Blade's eyes; the way the colour-changing snake chases & devours its tail in the owner's irises denoting the sudden change of mood. It's like a warning beacon similar to that of a stoplight Red = Danger/Stop, Amber = Caution & Green = Saftey/Go. The Fae are all-time favourite supernatural species & you Thea Atkinson are Killing It!
I RATE REALM OF ILLUSION 5☆ OUT OF 5☆
I highly recommend this book, this author & seriesit'sts one of the best I've ever read. I'm so invested. Run out & buy it all today. While you're at it, check out her other incredible series too.
I read a Beta version & bought a copy. This is my fair, honest, and impartial review as always.

Thea Atkinson is a Master of her craft An author who excels as my Dark Themed Queen!
I always read Ms. Atkinson's books with great anticipation because she's such a masterful writer. The third book in the Iron King's Assassin series wrings every emotion out of our girl Ava. What she endured while trapped in the catacombs has left her so emotionally scarred that she can barely open her eyes. Only the solid presence of the Dark Enforcer, Blade, keeps her grounded in reality. He rescued her and vowed to stay by her side. She held onto that one thought as she tried to recover from all the hits of the drug Bloodmist she had to inhale just to survive that hellhole. But, now she's in withdrawal, a withdrawal that's so much worse than ever before, especially since she's been clean for so long. She's powerless to resist as Blade guides them back to the tavern she was kidnapped from. He knows she needs time and rest to get through the worst withdrawal symptoms. Along the way, her feelings for him start to change, but she's fighting any hint of caring for Fae, any Fae, but especially for the Dark Enforcer.
When they finally make it back to the Shadow Court, Ava has hardly recovered from the trauma before she's dragged before the Fae mafia boss again. He's taken action that has shocked her, and her rage nearly causes the boss to threaten the one person she cares about--her sister Kit. Now Ava faces more danger as she's torn between two fae brothers--Stone, who has more humanity in him than some humans, and the Dark Enforcer, who makes her blood sing. There are so many moving pieces in this story that kept me glued to the story. Will Ava be able to protect her sister in Fae land while carrying out her dangerous mission, and will she ever believe that she deserves love?
I can't wait to read what Ms. Atkinson has in store for our monster hunter, Ava. If you're looking for an intriguing and engaging series about assassins, monster hunters, and the Fae, this series is a must-read.
I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.
All I can seriously say is WOW! Thea Atkinson knocked it out of the park and to the moon with the third book in this series! Ava is recovering from her journey with those who had kidnapped her. Blade came for her! He destroyed that place! What does it mean? As she recovers, the heat intensifies between them, and Ava will discover a huge secret involving a special coin and Blade. Blade plans on stopping at a special bookstore for Mica, only to have them attacked, and Ava has to save Blade! Upon arrival at the castle, Stone will have more information for Ava. Mica will also present her with a few clues. Her relationships are becoming quite heated and confusing with the two brothers. But hers with Blade is off the charts INTENSE~ When the king becomes agitated over the lateness of her arrival, he will bring forth her sister as another bargaining chip and threat. The new plans revealed will have her sister saying things in front of everyone that should have remained a secret.
Once again, Ava has caused her sister’s life to be on the line…but this time, will they be able to make it out? The information she learns makes her realize just how perilous it will be to assassinate the Iron King. She will have to assassinate him and get her and her sister out before the perish. It seems there is something going on between her sister and Flint as well. Ava cannot win it seems~ Even though she has the three brothers on her side…will it be enough? Will they be able to save her and her sister? Those are questions that will stay with us until the next book! This series continues to elevate with each book. The action, the heat, the intensity, the secrets, the expectations of Ava…where will it all end…I am waiting with bated breath for the next installment!
We start where the last book left off. Ava has been rescued from the catacombs by Blade and now she will have to suffer the withdrawals from the Bloodmist she used to keep herself going in the that awful place. The evidence of Blade's anger at her abduction are evident when they return to the inn, but Ava is too sick to care. She is surprised at the care Blade takes of her while she suffers, but knows she cannot let it make her forget who and what he is.
Things are no better when they return to the castle. She does finally learn some more about the assassination she is supposed to pull off, but now she is even more skeptical of her ability to pull it off and save her sister. There will be some surprises on that front also. No spoilers here, but it is another cliffhanger ending.
I can hardly wait to see what happens next as it is finally time to be presented to the King she is determined to kill. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Realm Of Illusion picks right back up from where we left Ava and Blade in the previous book, and honestly, the poor girl can’t catch a break! After a horrible detox leaves her weakened, she walks herself right into more danger. She is never more at home than in the middle of a fight where she is more often than not, significantly outmatched, and typically outnumbered.
I loved getting to see Ava and Blade further develop their relationship and the tension between the two is great. Hoping we can finally see Ava open up a bit in the next book. And speaking of the next book, I’m ready for that now! Don’t leave me hanging over here on that ending for too long!
Overall, I’ve been enjoying this series and seeing these characters develop more with each installment. It’s also been a nice change up from what is often an alluring world built around Fae. There has been no part of this realm I’d wish to travel to!.
[I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.]
Nothing dealing with the fae is ever simple, hence our heroine's current plight. Problems continue to arise in all directions, but our heroine is doing the best she can. The only question is, will it be good enough for her to survive?
This is book three of the series. It does okay as a standalone, but I recommend starting at the beginning so you understand the backstory.
This is a urban fantasy story involving the fae. The story is well written and easy to read with an intriguing setting that is fun to explore. The characters are well developed and they are what drew me into the story. I particularly like our heroine as she is tough and smart, just the way I like them. The plot moves along at a good pace and includes a nice blend of action and intrigue which keeps things interesting throughout. Overall, this was a great addition to the series and I look forward to the next book.
Highly recommended.

After the way the previous book ended, I was very much anticipating this story. Picking up immediately, Ava is doing her best to recover from her ordeal in the catacombs. Her constant companion through this is the oh so delicious enforcer, Blade. His motives may be less than heroic for now...
However, their journey back to the Shadow Court is not an easy one. Blade and Ava feel the rising tension and attraction, but how can they ever be together?
This book was so gripping and I am excited to see what comes next for our heroes.

After Ava escaped the catacombs with Blade's help, they set onto the journey back, no less dangerous than before. And the delay in return to the Shadow Court is deadly, too. The stakes get even higher with Kit in the middle of it, the Days are coming, and Ava's life is becoming a complete mess. Dangerous and violent tale, full of action and suppressed emotions that threaten to explode at each page. There is a lot of character development and getting to learn some of the side characters - I especially liked to see more of Mica. And now I am curious what happens to Ava on her mission.
This is one of those series that just grabs with each book and just gets better and better. We pick up from where we left off and poor Ava is really going through the wringer in this one. Withdrawals from the bloodmist means she needs Blade to stand by her and guide her back but even with her feelings changing and growing, she must remember who or what he actually is! These books draw you in from the get go and I get very annoyed if someone interrupts me! Surprise and twists you will not see coming, this dark and intriguing read is a fantastic addition to this incredible series.
Where to start! Ava and Blade have returned for another gripping adventure and their heat rolls of kindle. Ava still has trust issues, Blade is angry and the drama is still at an all time high. This story has a depth and dimension of realness that is shrouded in plenty of soul catching detail and heart stopping action. Can Ava complete her task with all that’s happening. The next book can’t get here fast enough.

This book continues in the same excellent manner as the previous ones in the series and absolutely does not disappoint (well, other than the next book isn’t available yet lol)
Thea keeps the reader enthralled with every turn of the page and the story is evolving in an exciting and tantalising way. Plenty of twists and turns with tension by the bucketload I had to keep telling myself to breathe as I was reading.
Can’t wait for the next book in the series as I’m desperate to find out what happens next.
I was so happy to find this book! After reading the first 2 I was dying to see what happened next! Ava has to do a lot soul searching and wrestle with her inner demons as well as the outer problems of Stone, Blade, Mica, and Kit. Oh, and that pesky assassination she has to fulfill in order to save her sister. With all the twists and the continued attraction of both Fae hunks it is hard to tell what she will do. I am anxiously waiting on book 4 to find out what happens.

This series must be read in order. The story picks up right where the last one ends, and things continue to be wild and crazy. The whole series is a whirlwind of action and adventure, and it has a fast pace that keeps me glued to the pages. This one felt more emotional to me, but that could be because I'm connecting more and more with Ava. She just can't catch a break. If you love gritty, fast-paced urban fantasy reads then this one will be a winner.
Realm of Illusion is book three of the series and keeps the reader on their toes as another fiery advancement of the plot brings about more drama and coitus interruptous for leads Blade and Ava. I have been enjoying the storyline and though some issues may seem to resolve in this book don’t get a false sense of security though as the surprises will keep coming! Can’t wait for more!.

Ava is rescued from the catacombs by Blade and going through withdrawal from her ordeal. Blade's softer side is shown in this book as he nurses Ava back to health. As secrets are revealed, who Ava can trust and who her enemies are become confused and leave her unsteady.
These books are action packed with lots of intrigue and questions about the characters motives. Every step forward makes you question where this plot is headed and who the true enemy is.
This is the 3rd book in the series and just as captivating as the first. Found it very hard to put down even when my eyes couldn't see any more. I'm really waiting on the next chapter in the story as this one leaves you wanting more.
Highly recommended.

This one continues where the first left off and it goes deeper into the lore and world. I really enjoyed the journey and character all 'round to make this story unique and creative. Steady paced sees you through and allows you to be consumed into the pages. Dark and entertaining.
