I loved this one! It shows the horrible deeds of "the hammer of the scots" king Edward i. Seeing the h dying in a cage the H risks everything to save her. He is most definitely her angel knight. This is a sweet story of a brave woman and a strong, kind knight.

4’5 Estrellas.

In the time of Robert the Bruce, there is a legend of gold…

Set in Scotland n 1306-1307, when Edward I reigned in England and Robert the Bruce would become King of Scotland, this is the story of Lady Christian MacGillean, a Scottish heiress and follower of her cousin the Bruce, and who burned her own castle in Western Scotland to keep the English from getting it.

Sir Gavin Faulkener, an English knight, whose mother was a Scot, encounters Christian when she is a prisoner of Edward, and at death’s door because she is kept in a cold cage. Gavin rescues her and, without her awareness, marries her with permission of the English king. Christian takes his new bride back to Kilglassie Castle, which is now his, only to find ruins and his bride a rebel. The English want the gold believed to be hidden in the castle, but the only gold Christian has is the gold medallion she gave to her adopted daughter to keep when she fled.

King’s story reflects much research into the history as she describes the castle, the environs and the politics of Scotland. There are also some mystical elements, including the legend of Merlin and the prophecy of the gold of Kilglassie Castle. The characters are well developed and the love between Christian and Gavin tenderly portrayed. There is a beautiful scene as King describes the harp that Christian plays. Lovers of romance set in the Highlands will want to read this one. Be prepared for a more leisurely pace, however, as King takes her time developing the story.

Normally, I love Dave Gillies' narrations. He's awesome at voices and accents. But, for some reason, this time he seemed to be overly concerned with the body of the story, even though the voices were still great. He goes from a normal speaking voice to whispers, and then the dialogue will blast me out of the room! I have to keep adjusting volume which, as you can surmise, really detracts from the story!
Susan King is a new author for me, but I enjoyed her writing immensely.

Scotland, 1306
Lady Christian MacGillean, a Scottish heiress and follower of her cousin the Bruce, and who burned her own castle Kilglassie in Western Scotland to keep the English from getting it. Now because of this she is considered an outlaw. Lady Christian has had her entire family wiped out by the English so she has no love for any sassenach! She was forced to wed a hateful English Knight, Henry Faulkner. When he dies she is suspected of murdering him except he was killed by a bow, a weapon she doesn't even know how to use! She has an adopted daughter Michaelmas who she calls Mícheal who was born in a nunnery that she left with her close friend and Celtic Priest and his wife Moira and their many sons to keep her safe from the English. Henry and his English garrison had taken her home, land and murdered innocents Scot’s in the name of the King! Christian swore to Thomas Bruce never again as she went to meet her cousin King Robert the Bruce, The true King of Scotland!

Christian’s deceased husband had only married her for the gold her castle Kilgassie was rumored to have. Even though Christian, nor any of her family members or servants had ever seen any of this gold and everyone had searched for it, most think it is just a fictional legend from long ago. The legend was supposed to have this hidden gold from centuries ago that was given to King Arthor of Camelot that had been blessed by Merlin, the Druid, magician or warlock. Of course none of the English believe her and think she is hiding it and will eventually give it to her cousin, King Robert to support Scotland! Christian and other female family members of Robert the Bruce are put in cages. She had been in a locked cage where she was beaten, starved and blankets were often taken away by the King's first officer Hastings. Her only relief is when one of the English servants who is very kind and thinks it is disgraceful how they are treating this young lass she doesn't care if she is English or scottish no human being should be treated like this. Plus the lass is at death's door and she is still being mistreated. The English serf tries to help her but is denied when asked so she sneaks what she can to feed and keep her warm.

Sir Gavin Faulkener, an English knight, is half English and half Scottish whose mother was a Scot, encounters Christian when she is a prisoner of Edward, and at death’s door because she is kept in a cold cage. He is sick and angry seeing how they are mistreating a woman! Gavin rescues her without full permission thinking she is dying. He is promised an English castle and given Kilglassie not realizing it was in ruins, without her awareness he marries Christian with permission of the English king. Christian at first thinks he is an angel except Gavin feels love for Christian immediately and does everything to save her. As he already lost one young wife from the same illness. Christian thinks Gavin is an angel at first with his golden hair and blue eyes then she assumes he is Scottish hearing his mothers brother's Scottish accents. She is shocked he is an English night, is her dead husband's cousin and married! A wedding she has no memory of she feels so betrayed as she doesn't trust any English Knight especially with the name Faulkner. Though he is kind and seems to have a gift for healing she still feels betrayed! Will she ever trust this angel knight as a man and not let his Englishness get in the way. Read and find out.

Again another heart wrenching story that is absolutely brilliant! Susan King definitely knows how to draw you in and keep a fast moving, awe-inspiring story that any historical reader will absolutely love! It definitely has a bit of everything in this novel, from the ancient celtic stories of King Arthur and Merlin of Camelot, to the iconic true hero Robert the Bruce and his faithful followers. Furthermore this book is filled with faith, magic, myths, folklore, Bruce sympathizers, hatred, torture, love, trust, angels, healing, humorous children, guardian doves, plus a good share of English villains, and a golden haired hero with some other special gifts and a harp playing lass you just hope will survive and get her HEA.

I love historical fiction that has a bit of true history with historical fiction and some iconic true hero’s like Robert the Bruce and the devastating things that he had to deal with during his life, This is a re-read for me and I loved it even more if that is even possible. It is no wonder I have loved this writer for over 25 years! A book that is an absolute must read!

Lady Christian MacGillan was the widow of an English knight, she had been declared a traitor and an outlaw by King Edward of England, who had dispossessed her of her Scottish lands. Sir Gavin Faulkener has his own secrets. He is loyal to King Edward but at the same time not exactly a sworn enemy to the Scottish cause. Two troubled souls looking for healing, redemption and a second chance at happiness.

An interesting plot, well developed and entertaining. I appreciated the character development of the lead figures and loved the various subcharacters. Sir Gavin was an absolute hero. I liked his mature way of thinking and acting. Especially when taking into consideration the difficult times and the nobility’s precarious standing towards the king. Lady Christian was an absolute worthy female lead character, though she was a bit overshadowed by Sir Gavin. I liked how the main characters gradually felt their way around each other. Although these passages were slowly paced, the author entertained these sections with delicately phrases descriptions, which formed the perfect background for the further plot development.

Initially the storyline kept me riveted and the descriptions fired up my enthusiasm. For me personally, towards the end of the plot the book took a downward slope. I couldn’t make friends with the “paranormal” element regarding Gavin and thought that the last twist in the plot was just too much like a fairytale. In any case, an entertaining enough read.

On the wings of the Angel, the doves do rest.
What is a lady to do when she is facing death from different methods? This is what faces Christian MacGillan a widow and now declared a traitor by King Edward of England. Oh how sad this story started the burning of the castle and given up of her daughter Michaelmas. This was a very powerful story and very well written. The author did a wonderful job of showing the horrible history between the Scots and English. Parts of this book were hard to read and so cruel to think about what had occurred. The characters were splendid Gavin and Cristian's story was touching it balances out horrible parts. I loved at the end when the golden casket was given to the king there is a touch of magic there. Enchanting, heartwarming story of two people on opposite sides of the war between England's King Edward and Robert the Bruce of Scotland in 1306-7 with a magical thread that these two are destined to be together. It starts when Gavin, an English knight, sees Christian, a Scottish noblewoman, dying in a cage mounted on the outside of a castle during winter. He is compelled to try to save her and she thinks he is Saint Michael come to take her to heaven. Gavin is granted her ruined castle and land and ordered to marry her and get the location of the treasure rumored to be there before she dies. They both try to make their way forward through a tightrope of loyalties, family, rebuilding the castle, and recovering from old deep wounds. There's not much I can say about this book. It was part of my grandmother's book collection and I had some time to get around to reading it.

Mostly, I liked it. It's refreshing from the usual historical novels in some respects. It did get a little odd at times, but otherwise, it's completely serviceable and a decent distraction (even if you felt like offing the king and others, which the book does a good job in making you hate them a Lot.).

I like the bit of background on the Hero and how it worked to intertwine with the Heroine's life.

Solid both as a romance and historical fiction. I’ve been into Plantagenet England lately, so this was a fun addition to that trend. Plus, the hero here is extremely gentle and woos with gentle strength that is seldom seen in this sort of plot. A slight bit of over exposition and too much keeping to typical plot points that kept this from a higher raising, but enough of a stretch to be one I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre.

A healing touch

A knight finds himself torn between his oath to the English king and his maternal connection to Scotland. But it is his love for a young Scottish woman that he gives his trust that decides his fate. Entertaining historical fact and fiction interacting with Robert the Bruce's fight for the throne of Scotland. A compelling love story with a very hot knight.

Angels and demons

He was known as the Angel Knight and an English Knight. She was a Scot captured by the English and hung in a wooden cage on the outside of s castle. Gavin sees her, knows she is dying and rescues her. So starts a tale of bitterness, war and greed. This is the first I've read by this author but definitely no the last.

Started off interesting … then it got repetitive with her hate toward him and him doing every thing to prove the opposite to her and boring really quick … then I just didn’t care. Last 30% I just didn’t about the ending.
