Rate this book
An agonised scream cuts through the roar of the snowstorm. Horrified, Fiona twists around to look at the group of hikers behind her. There are four people, where there should be five...
When police officer Fiona MacLeish stumbles upon a group of fellow hikers in dire trouble in the dramatic peaks of the Scottish Highlands, she has no choice but to help. One of the party has fallen off the path, lying below with the crisp white snow around his head starting to turn scarlet.
Fiona soon learns the potential accident is actually a deliberate murder. But who would want to hurt this man and why? With visibility worsening and the snowstorm getting worse, Fiona and the group of hikers make it just in time to a nearby shelter. As Fiona questions those in the party, she realises that everyone is keeping secrets about their relationship with the victim. Any one of these hikers could be the killer...
When another brutal attack happens, it is clear that the murderer is still among them. Trapped in a shelter at the top of a mountain, Fiona must move fast and identify the killer before they strike again. When her role as a police officer is revealed, Fiona herself becomes a target. With tensions rising and food running out, she knows she doesn't have long until more people die. But can she find the killer and save herself and the innocent hikers in time? The Shelter is the third book in the Fiona MacLeish series, set in the remote Scottish mountains. Fans of J.M. Dalgliesh, J.D. Kirk and Simon McCleave will love this character-driven police procedural with a dark twisty plot. Readers love G.N.

Fiona MacLeish is back investigating another murder case and just like always this also takes place in the midst of a blizzard where a group of fellow hikers are in dire trouble and have to take refuge in a shelter. One of them is a killer and Fiona must move fast and identify the killer before they strike again.

While I loved the setting of the remote Scottish mountains, I found the plot to be slow moving and we get to look into Fiona's thought process as she tries to work out what is going on. The last third of the book is exciting with non stop action and a dramatic conclusion.

Thank you @bookouture for having me on the #booksontour and @netgalley for the advanced digital copy to read and review.

I really liked the previous books in this series. However I wasn’t such a fan for this one. It was descriptive but also very slow moving. I do like Fiona and look forward to her next book

Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for my approval to read and review this book.

This is the 3rd in the Fiona MacLeish series. This book is set on a one of the Munro Mountains near Loch Fyne and the action takes place on the mountain and in a secluded bothy, which is where they take shelter. Fiona is on a day off and goes hiking with 2 of her oldest friends, Donna and Jack (a married couple) and they meet up with a group of 6 hikers on their way down from the summit. All of a sudden, there is a scream and one of the 6 has disappeared over the side!! Fiona and one of the group climb down to find hiker severely injured. They all start to descend down the mountain only to be find themselves stranded in blizzard conditions and forced to take shelter in the bothy, where there are 3 more people that are part of the original 6 hikers. PC Fiona MacLeish is on her own without support of Police Scotland and she has to investigate how the accident happen. Was it intentional? All through the story, you will face plot twists and turns that lead to a dramatic conclusion. I read this book in one day as it was unputdownable! I will recommend this book to fellow book readers.

Set in the remote Scottish mountains Fiona and her friends Donna and Jack are hiking when they meet up with six other walkers. As they get chatting a blizzard makes its way towards them. Suddenly there's a scream and when Fiona looks behind there are now five people instead of six.
So begins a search for a missing person but when the missing Kevin is found and taken to a nearby shelter will his injuries prove fatal and if it's not an accident is Fiona trapped with a would-be murderer?

As with the previous books, The Flood and The Island, Fiona is once again on a serious case in an isolated environment with no backup.
While entertaining as a standalone novel the circumstances do feel a little forced to set up what is effectively another locked room mystery.

It's a slower moving plot than the previous books with a lot of repetition of Fiona's thoughts as she tries to work out what is going on but this is great if you are a fan of psychological mysteries as she tries to understand who these people are and why one of them would attack Kevin.

The last section of the book is exciting as we get answers and action and also a little more of Fiona's ongoing story that is gradually unfolding as the series progresses.

A quick read. I'm hoping for Fiona's sake that she gets to work a case with other officers and detectives next time.

This is the third book in the Fiona MacLeish series and I think it’s the best one yet, I’ll tell time why below.

This is one is the perfect book to read during the winter months, it’s so atmospheric, you’ll want to head to a snowy Scottish mountain asap or maybe not after you’ve read it but I certainly did.

It’s the same format as the previous ones, Fiona is alone and is the only law enforcement when a murder is committed, she’s got no back up and is isolated on a mountain, she has to use all her skills to painstakingly uncover the truth and I just loved uncovering the truth right alongside Fiona.

I hope we get more and more of this series and more people get to love it as much as I do.

I really enjoyed the previous books in this series, but this one not so much. I found the pace was very slow, with not much action for long periods of time. there is only so much to describe whilst walking in a snow storm. The plotting was good and I liked the characterisation. The story never really gripped me and I found myself longing for the ending as Fiona really began to irritate me! Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

This book was not for me. I could not find any empathy for the FMC, Fiona. Her constant paranoia was draining. She was suspicious of everyone without any valid reason other than her conjectures. It felt like she was jumping at shadows which didn’t inspire any confidence in me about her capabilities as an investigator.

I received a free copy from Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.

A Fiona MacLeish Crime Thriller.
This is the 3rd book in this series. I have previously ready books 1 and 2 and enjoyed them. ~This thriller was no different. Really an enjoyable read.
If there is one thing I could certainly say about the writing of this book is that the author certainly knows what the readers want.
Thrilling and exciting. This read will keep you on the edge the whole way thorough.
I do feel a little sorry for Fiona as she always seems to be in the thick of things, why can't she just enjoy a couple of days off. Does she attract trouble. Maybe it's just because she's so good at what she does.
Out for a hike (maybe a book club would be less stress for Fiona) With Friends Fiona stumbles upon another group of people in trouble. Set in the Scottish mountains this thriller sets off at pace and holds it the whole way through.
Bravo G N Smith, and Bookouture this was an absolute pleasure to read and more so being able to read the three books back to back.
Will certainly keep you entertained, get stuck in to reading these 3 books.
