Clare Lydon is a London-based writer of contemporary lesbian romance. She's a No.1 best-seller on lesbian fiction charts around the globe with five full-length novels to her name, as well as writing the All I Want series, set to continue throughout 2016. If you love romantic comedies, prepare to fall head over heels in love.
If you like books shot through with witty dialogue, 3D characters and sharp observations of modern lesbian life, why not give Clare's books a try?
First of all, Clare Lydon needs to keep her cover designer because her covers are so nice and we all judge books by their covers. I know I do.
This book is a charming read about a fake dating couple and I enjoyed the story a lot. The premise in short is that Erin doesn't want to attend her parents' anniversary party single and alone so at her friend's cajoling, she hires a fake girlfriend from an agency. Steph becomes Erin's professional fake girlfriend because she fits the profile Erin wants and she enjoys a good pay and a trip to the Scottish Highlands. Steph is actually an actress who hasn't yet had her big break but her job is meaningful because it is a childhood dream that she can fulfill after being given a second chance in life following an illness many years ago.
This book starts out light. The attraction is almost instantaous and I love just how sweet the relationship started out. It was fun watching Erin and Steph interact as a "couple" infront of the family and what I also like is that beneath the surface, Lydon shows us some deep problems that Erin's family has to work out on their own and introduces multiple layers of complication with Steph that made it so engaging to read.
Lydon produced a winner with a little twist and I enjoyed this book so much.
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
These protagonists where charming and I loved spending time with them, though there were drawbacks. Interestingly, the short timeframe (days, really) wasn't one of them. Both the chemistry and the connection worked for me and since they were stuck together and under pressure their relationship seemed well substantiated.
Less well substantiated was their age. They're both 37 and that seems old for where they were in life. Erin has never had a real relationship, we're told, and Steph is still slogging away at an almost-career in acting. I think the story would have benefited (in every way) by subtracting a decade from their age. It's not like you'd need much editing for it to happen as they're both stalled lifeplan-wise.
I was a bit worried about their respective backgrounds as each has a topic Lydon is being coy about. We find out Erin's fairly quickly, but Steph is a hold-out for a good bit longer. I wasn't ever anxious, or even annoyed, but mostly because I was enjoying the two together so well.
Which is pretty much my verdict, frankly. It was a fun read and I liked them both and their relationship gelled very well. I'm going to go with four stars because it felt like the final crisis was milked beyond reason and for a personal bit of friction I'll get to here shortly.
A note about Reality vs. Fantasy: This is all spoilers as it has to do with Steph's reveal. There's bonus over-share, too. You have been warned. But the author either doesn't know all this or ignores it for the purposes of the story. And I had the hardest time trying to convince myself that I didn't know it, either, so that I could sink fully into it along with her/them.
A note about Steamy: There are three explicit sex scenes and they're a bit lengthy, putting this in the upper middle of my steam tolerance. They were about what I expected, given their chemistry and connection and a good illustration of their growing trust and intimacy. Well, I don't know that about the last one because I totally skimmed it, but you get the picture (as had I by that point and didn't feel the need to read the details).
I've said this before but when you pick up a book by Clare Lydon you know that you are going to get a well-written good quality story, no matter what the plot is about. When you read 100+ books per year like me, it's a huge relief and a treat. So despite that my pile of books to review is touching the ceiling, I've dumped the rest to read it.
It's hard to talk about this book without giving anything away so I'm not going to say much about the plot but if you are curious, read the book blurb because it's very well written so it gives you an idea of what to expect without revealing anything. Here is my take anyway: Erin Stewart doesn't want to attend her parents' anniversary weekend by herself so she hires a fake date to play the part. What Erin wasn't expecting is that Steph would be so gorgeous and supportive when Erin's family drama unravels with dire consequences for everyone...
Clare Lydon is well known as the queen of (lesbian) British romantic comedies and after reading most of her work I thought I knew what to expect from her books but I have to admit that this one surprised me... This is not her usual feel-good rom com... There are funny parts, for sure, but expect to be grabbed into a whirlwind of drama which will make you dizzy only to afterwards shove you out of its vortex into an emotional minefield. The drama will put a lump on your throat, the romance will make it better, but the hangover of the emotional turmoil will stay with you for a while.
Fake romances are one of my favourite tropes and there are multiple ways to present them in stories. I liked the "hire a fake date" idea of a professional actress pretending to be Erin's date. I've seen it in books before but here it sounds totally plausible. I enjoyed the way the author slowly blurrs the lines between strictly professional to dangerously flirting. Romance lovers will love that and the first kiss captures the shift perfectly.
Normally Ms. Lydon sets her books in London but this time she chose the Scottish Highlands only without their usual gloomy weather (although there is a funny rain scene). I usually follow the Lesbians who Write podcast (co-presented with TB Markinson) and she's been talking about a recent summer trip she took to the Highlands so I'm glad to see it reflected in her work, it's a beautiful part of the world that deserves to be featured as such. Her description of the landscape is very photographic and made me wish I was there.
I'm normally not a fan of drama in my books (there's enough of that in the real world) but I felt that it was handled really well here. The characters felt authentically British in their way to handle their emotions, stiff upper lip and a cup of tea included. Knowing the Brits so well, they sounded realistic and natural to me. All the characters in this book from secondary to mains are very well fleshed out but, of course, the mains steal the show. They are both lovely and the reader cannot help but root for their relationship to succeed.
Can I also add that the choice of title is fantastic? If you read it, you'll know why. I can't wait for the audiobook to be out to hear the delicious Scottish lilt. 5 stars.

Change of Heart started out super cute with its fauxmance premise and Steph and Erin getting to know each other and getting along so well. There were some really funny and sweet scenes between them, as well as a few spicy scenes along the way, and I was having such a wonderful time reading about the two of them navigating their fake relationship. And then the major twist happened.
I do not know why Lydon chose to include a twist like that. I only know I didn't like how it was developed and the sort of conflict it generated. It soured my reading experience and it felt unnecessary. Spoilers ahead:
Great start! I am a big fan of the fake romance angle. But as the story progressed there were just too many eye roll moments. By the end of the book I was ready for everyone to walk away from each other and call it a day.
It's been a while since I last read a really good faux romance, and alas, I found a really good one this year with Change of Heart. I adored faux romance, but insta-love… not so much. But the angst/drama that happened negates whatever displeasure I have with insta-love. Simply said, I was not expecting the plot to go the way it was written...
It got me all up in the feels so good, my lady saw me upset... and squeezed herself behind me, then wrapped me in her arms and legs as I finished the book. It was the best way to read the book that hits so close to home.

3.75 Stars rounded up. Cute Highlands fauxmance with some good family drama and a very interesting twist that supplies the "dark moment". highly recommend. kindle unlimited.
I will be looking out for the audiobook version, cuz I love me some Scottish accents. :)
3,5 stars Erin hires a fake girlfriend because she doesn't want to attend her parents' wedding anniversary without a partner. What she doesn't expect is that it would feel anything but fake.
I really like the fauxmance trope, the writing style and the humor (for example the beanstalk). The setting is also interesting since I've never read a story that played in the Scottish Highlands. It's a sweet story, but it also deals with a pretty tough subject and I think that it was well done. I like the way Erin and Steph are communicating with each other and the romance between them feels authentic. Another thing I like about this book is the unexpected twist in the second half.
There are also a few things that bother me, for example the way Erin reacts after the twist. I don't want to spoil anything, but I think she reacts really harsh and I feel bad for Steph. Also, in my opinion the story is a bit repetitive at times.
Altogether, I enjoyed this story, even though there were some things I didn't like. This was my first book by Clare Lydon and I will give another one a try in the future.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Hayley Munro. The narration didn't help elevate this story to the next level, it's rather dull. While Munro switches between the Scottish and British accents effortlessly, that's also the only difference between the characters. At least to my ears. And the non-dialogue parts are like the narrator is belittling a little, almost like reading to a kid. I've never heard a sex scene narrated so flatly, yawn-inducing even.
The story itself is ok, I think the narration made me like this fauxmance a little less than I would have if I would have read it. Overall I think it's just a bit flat and mediocre.
I am a fan of Clare's writing, just to make that known. Here, though, I did only want to give 4 stars, as for once the plot was just that little bit too out of this world to really convince me.
Mind you, Clare's writing is as good as ever and the idea is, i'll admit, tempting, but as the characters themselves voice, what is the probability for that to really happen? The mathematician in me votes for almost nil and my life experience as a counsellor agrees.
Yet the tale was entertaining enough to still warrant four stars.
"She was a hire car. Yes, I got an upgrade, but she always had a return date.” yeah no thanks
editted to say there's a scene where the mc compares her relationship with her partner to incest and it was so terrible and made me feel sick. Even though there's no incest here i want to give a broad content warning? the context is a spoiler and used as twist which i really disliked.
this didn't suck, it was kind of cute. But like? Also kind of stupid, the whole argument about nadia's heart is kinda like? weird my dude who cares, it's definitely not incest? But they WERE VERY CUTE, fell flat tho kind of.
I guess it was alright, though I didn't feel any chemistry between the two main characters. Sigh. Also the third act conflict was so fucking ridiculous and calling something incest that really isn't made me roll my eyes a lot. Was planning to give this 3 stars, but I'm going to deduct one.
Stink....I finished this awhile ago and forgot to write a review. I remember liking it, not only because I love anything Scotland-based, but the story was interesting. I understood why the drama took the direction it did, even if parts of it frustrated me. I was more drawn to Steph than Erin for the most part, but she grew on me eventually. Solid 4.25/5.
....and I did annotate another few worthwhile gems:
-She had the air of a woman who'd challenge you to a tennis match and not let you leave the court until she'd won." (this describing a mother actually terrified me a little).
-The words made Erin jump to her feet. "Jesus!" When she turned, Steph's concerned stare was on her. "You're so quiet you're like a fucking Prius."
I'm a big fan of Clare Lydon's books as they always feature intriguing storylines with a lot of humour. Change of Heart is another great book by Lydon, which definitely pulled on my heartstrings.
Change of Heart is the first book I've read by Lydon that definitely bought on a few tears. Without giving too much away, a big part of this book is the way people deal with grief differently and implications within family dynamics. I'm not sure why this touched me so deeply and ended up making me shed tears, but I guess it goes to show my investment in the storyline.
The romance between Erin and Steph begins by a fauxromance storyline, where they meet and quickly feel a strong connection to each other. I liked the romance between them but I did think it erred on the simplistic side of things and I wasn't quite persuaded by their connection other than an intense mutual attraction.
I really liked this story and thought the romance was sweet, but I was definitely more engaged with the side story surrounding grief and family dynamics.
Many thanks to Clare Lydon for providing me a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
Great romantic story. I love reading a good fauxmance and this one was excellent. What was different from the usual fauxmance is that Steph and Erin communicated about their feelings. There was a nice build up of the romance and the characters with their problems and issues. Beneath the romance there was some real drama, but it didn’t diminish my enjoyment, but added to the story. This book had depth and warmth. 5 stars for this lovely romance.
New to me author, maybe I'll read more of her work in the future. The author did a wonderful job with the storyline the characters and their interactions. Many times she could have waited just a bit longer to get the characters to talk honestly about things (as many other authors do) but she didn't and saved the book from becoming too dramatic. The story got emotionally intense in the last 25% but given the topic I understand that a lighter approach wouldn't have worked good, either. I enjoyed the book, but was not blown away by it, mostly because of Erin and her long internal musings and struggles in the last 25% (the author clearly needed to stay on some topics for some lenght, but it felt a bit much for me in the end). 4 stars.
this is one of those don't judge a book by its cover moments. it all looked very promising with the whole fake dating trope but it really just wasn't good.
I didn't care about any of the characters, the main even characters annoyed me and everything between them felt rushed and unnatural like I literally had to skip the porn scenes because they gave me secondhand embarrassment.
the plot was just kinda there and the ending was unnecessarily dreaded, especially with the time skip.
I also hated the vocabulary but I can't tell if that's because I'm not in the right age category or because I'm not Scottish. a list of examples: the overuse of "cleavage" just say boobs like the rest of us, "fuck-a-doodle-fuck" sounded very millennial, "study-cum-junk" (I take it this is latin), "her perfect dark triangle" (hence the secondhand embarrassment) and the hardened and giving a tingle of approval-clit.
You really can't go wrong with a Clare Lydon book. She has proven herself to be a writer that puts out well written and enjoyable romances. Change of Heart was slightly different for me that this one had some twists and turns that I did not expect. It also had the appropriate amount of angst needed. This books like many of her others are reason I keep coming back to read Lydon's books.
do i recommend reading it? i mean yeh it's not really a long book so why deny yourself this
weirdness?
it just feels like some parts popped out of umm sci fi? fantasy maybe?
or maybe i'm the only one finding it a bit odd. lemme know.
still
loved the cover - that's what made me start reading it tbh
obviously wasn't as good of a read as the cover promised
but nothing new there
funny thing is the "weird" factor didn't even lower the rating that much tbh i just wasn't really buying the chemistry part and then drama was annoying and it wasn't a nicely slowly cooked slowburn as i was hoping it'd be
so
yeah
ps
i always think it's funny when croatia is mentioned. like how dare you talk of things i know better than u lol. at the same time i like it when people know of a random european country (when they're not from europe ofc). i'm very weird yes.
in what world is croatia popular with the british now tho lol. not that i'm complaining. germans are the best. the most civilized and all that u know ksskks
Excellent story as you'd expect from CL. Loved the two MCs and the back characters. Close to WTF but I can live with that. Thanks Clare, another belter.
Such a cute story!! The plot twist was pretty predictable but I didn’t really mind. Erin and Steph were adorable and I loved how bold Steph was. The forced proximity trope worked so well for them!!! Everything happened kinda fast but at least we got to see them together at the end, which sometimes doesn’t happen because the characters spend so much time trying to figure things out that the book ends before we can really see them together as a couple and it always makes me kinda sad (I looove a good epilogue that updates you on their life together). Their epilogue was pretty good! Loved the update on Michael’s life as well.
Also whoever put "a first kiss to make you weak" in the blurb did NOT lie
