My husband made a terrible mistake. Now our children are missing…
This should be the trip of a lifetime – a week in New York with my family. As we stroll along the Hudson River, drinking coffee in the sunshine, anyone would think we’re the perfect family. But the truth is far more complicated.
I’ve been on edge the whole time because fifteen years ago when we were living in this city my husband Jack did something that ripped our lives apart. I swore I would never come back here, but Jack insisted.
One afternoon, in the blur of a crowd, I lose sight of my son. I can’t find him anywhere. Frantic, I call my husband. But what he tells me next shakes me to the core…
My daughter’s gone missing too.
I end the conversation, my whole body shaking with fear. As I’m desperately searching for my children, the phone rings – it’s an anonymous number.
The hard voice at the other end gives me an kill my husband or my children will die.
The clock is ticking. Can I save my family in time?

Daniel Hurst knows how to deliver a quick entertaining thriller with surprising twists! 🍎
Something happened in New York City 15 years ago and Lorna and Jack vow never to return. When Maddie (21) and Alex (18) make the NYC holiday their birthday wish, Lorna crumbles.
Wow, this one kept me guessing. The author kept me in the dark until he decided to give it away which then I became conflicted about who to root for!
The family holiday becomes a worst nightmare and someone is doomed to make very tough decisions.
When you're looking for a fun popcorn thriller that you can finish in one or two sittings, Hurst's thrillers are an excellent choice. I enjoyed this audiobook with great narration by Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley. Hurst knows how to end an exciting thriller and makes me crave for more!
Being a Daniel Hurst fan, his novels are my must-read. I didn't read the blurb which many reviewers have said was full of spoilers. Rest assured, it's been updated on GR without giving much away. Don't read the one on Amazon though!⚠️
Thank you Bookouture Audio for the ALC. Published Sep 30, 2023! 5 hrs and 35 mins
I listend to the audiobook version of this book, and was very satisfied with the narrators. They did an excellent job and that made the whole experience more pleasant. I do have to agree with another review I’ve read; that the blurb gives too much away. I felt like after reading it, I almost knew everything that would happen. Other than that, it was a fast-paced read as always, but it wasn’t very memorable or stood out in any way. Just an average thriller that gave me some hours of enjoyment, but not a book I would read again.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for my honest opinion!
A mistake, a horrible, horrible, mistake was made years ago....
Family vacations/trips/holidays are usually things people look back on fondly. Exploring new places, having new experiences, eating tasty food, taking photos, and having fun are usually what family trips are all about. But that is not the case for Jack and his wife, Lorna. They used to live in New York and when they left all those years ago, they swore they would never go back. But their daughter Maddie wants to go there for her birthday. So, Jack, Lorna, Alex (their son) and Maddie head to New York.
First off, the blurb of the book gives too much away. Seriously, less is more. So, readers will know a lot of the plot going into this book and that is a shame. What is not a shame is the audiobook which had great narrators telling the story. I thought they did a great job! This is a short listen and I easily listened to it over the course of one day.
With most Daniel Hurst books, things move very quickly, and readers will be transported into the action almost instantly. There is a lot on the line, their children are missing, and they need to find them while keeping their secret.
I usually love Daniel Hurst books and while I enjoyed this one and was entertained by it, it didn't quite love it as much as I have the previous books, I have read by him. Mainly because so much is told in the blurb. I like to be shocked and have twists and turns along the way, not be spoon fed everything that is going to happen. Sure, there are still some twists and turns and a reveal, but being told so much in the synopsis really affected my enjoyment of this book. Jack and Lorna are not the most likeable characters. It was hard to feel sorry for them, but I did feel for their children.
Again, this was entertaining, and the narrators were great. Hurst writes dramatic and shocking books that have me turning the pages at warp speed. Unfortunately, while I enjoyed this book, I didn’t love it. I did enjoy the drama and fast pace. I'm still a huge fan and look forward to reading more of his books in the future.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
A U.K. couple's children go missing in NYC in one afternoon at different venues.
Is this a coincidence or a targeted abduction?
Exactly how far would a father go to save the lives of his children?
Would he agree to sacrifice his own life for a mistake made 15 years ago?
Although I enjoyed the book's compelling premise, pacing, and twisty epilogue, overall, the book lacked the sizzle of Daniel Hurst's earlier revenge thrillers.
I listened to the audiobook read by Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley.
Full-cast audiobooks are always appreciated and both narrators did a superb job with the narration.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am a huge Daniel Hurst fan and will always be looking forward to listening to his future releases.
Lorna & Jack have been keeping a secret for 15 years. A secret that will come back to bite them when they visit NYC again with their older kids, Maddie & Alex.
Not a new plot, but fast paced and action packed, which is what I come to expect from this author. An enjoyable afternoon listen. Loved the surprise ending.
Narration notes: They both did fine, but I could have went for them to alter their voices a smidgen when they were speaking for Maddie & Alex. Tamsin did a nice job doing an American accent.
*Thanks to the author, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the audio copy. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
This thriller asks the question what would you do? Your husband does something that will affect your family forever. Do you stand by him? Should you risk returning to the scene of the crime? So many questions that have answers with life-altering ramifications are sprinkled throughout this fast-paced entertaining thriller. The final shocking twist was thought-provoking and original. This is another gripping Daniel Hurst creation that shouldn't be missed. The narrators expertly brought the characters to life while adding a layer of intrigue and realism. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook.
Do I read every Daniel Hurst I can get my hands on? Yes. Absolutely. Do I love them all? Nope. Will I continue to read every Hurst book? Yup.
My first criticism is probably to the publishers. Is that who decides the blurb used to entice readers??? Cause this blurb gave away so much of the plot, the surprises were few.
A UK family who previously lived in New York until the husband did a very bad thing and they fled the country with their children. Fast forward to the tykes turning 18 and 21 and asking for a trip to NY. Then the kids go missing. And for more spoilers, just read the description at the book’s Goodreads page.
I didn’t like the characters. I didn’t appreciate the premise knowing what I knew going in. And the traditional Hurst ending is formulaic at this point.
Formulaic has become the norm, unfortunately, for the many authors who write short books quickly.
The narration for the audio was on point and kept me listening.
The thing i love about Daniel hurst is the action is fact paced and revealing. Sadly in this case the blurb gives away virtually the entire plot which left me feeling flat before I started. This is narrated perfectly. Told from the pov of the main chatacters The action is fast paced. Due to the blurb the only real twist for me was the epilogue . I found this an enjoyable listen with good solid characters . The problem was I knew too much from the burb before i started so there was no anticipation or excitement.. I was left feeling there maybe more to duscover in a later outing. Sadly thus is only a 4 star listen due to the burb. I would suggest this was rewritten if possible as less is more. The narrators did a fantastic job and i loved all the action and chatacters it just didnt push the button as the burb told me virtually the entire plot. The story itself was a fab idea. I always look forward to the next daniel hurst. Thank you netgallery publisher author and narrators for this arc. My criticism is purely the burb and how it impacted the story.
I now run, don't walk, when I see that Daniel Hurst has a new book or audio out. Holy cow, he is such a fantastic writer and this one is excellent. Excellent narration in the audio and the ending made my mouth drop wide open. I was not expecting that ending! It was fast paced and I loved all the characters in the audio. Highly recommend this one! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. To be published September 30, 2023
I think I have said before when reviewing this authors books that I wonder when starting a new one wether this will be the ‘not so good’ one or the ‘one didn’t enjoy so much’……and every time this isen’t the case , and once again this is the case, I loved it I would say even more tense than usual and darker and had a chilling edge to it that got stronger as the plot thickened As always an engaging story, believable characters with each chapter left on a cliffhanger, whilst again as is regular with this authors work hinting at what the crux of the matter is and drawing us closer to it until BAM it’s there, revealed, and has to be dealt with It feels almost too blasé to say again this book was brillaint, but that’s the facts, as always it was nothing short than a great thrilling read
Lorna and Jack were transplants living in NYC during the financial crisis, so the 00's. Jack was in finance so it was a rough time for them, as well as many others. They had two children and were having a happy little life until something really bad happened. They mention this repeatedly without telling you details so you know it's super bad and it seems like the bad thing is something they did and escaped punishment.
After the bad thing, they moved back home to Europe, swearing off New York for life but their kids, now grown, want to go back as a birthday gift and see where they spent their early years. Instead of just saying no like I would, they get cajoled into it and of course the bad thing comes back to haunt them and a recipient of the aforementioned bad thing wants vengeance, even after all this time. Especially after all this time! Will they make it back across the pond in one piece?
I've read a few books lately of international authors writing about NYC trying not to sound touristy and failing and this was no different in that regard. A lot of the culture points and bureaucratic politics didn't quite add up. I'd always prefer for people to just write about where they live and know. This happens within the US as well, for instance when an author from another region tries to write a Southern book. It wasn't ruined by this, I just thought I'd weigh in on that tidbit.
It's told in quad narration but mostly by the two parents. We hear from the kids occasionally. I felt there were too many narrators but if we had to do it that way, I would have liked to have heard more from the son. He was a cool character and had interesting things to share.
All in all, it was a really good and quick read for a Friday night! I am really liking Daniel Hurst. I think his writing is evolving beautifully. This isn't a new favorite but it kept me guessing and I felt it was quite original and worth the time.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review.
Daniel Hurst is the male version of Freida McFadden for me. His books are fast paced, juicy, and not too be taken too seriously. Her Husbands Mistake is filled with unlikeable characters who make stupid decisions and now have to face the consequences. This was a quick enjoyable popcorn thriller. ☺️
Thank you too Bookouture and Netgalley for providing an early audiobook arc of this book, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Her Husband’s Mistake by Daniel Hurst* is the worst book I’ve read this year. I really hate saying that because it’s not like I am out here trying to write a book, let alone getting one published, but this was really…not good. The writing was so elementary and overly descriptive to the point that I wondered whether he was trying to hit a word count (for real, there were multiple sentences that were like “We discussed the plane food that was served to stave off our appetites during the flight”. My dude, you just described the function of food?!).
In brief, a woman and her husband return to New York with their young adult kids for the trip of a lifetime. What the kids don’t know is that, 15 years prior, they left the city under a cloud as their dad did something unthinkable. Now, the people he harmed are out for revenge. I won’t even go into how ludicrous the plot is, how awful the characters are and how the pacing favoured quick reveals rather than suspenseful build-ups.
I upgraded it from 1-star to 2-stars because I think the narrators did a good job with the material they had but the way New York was clearly referred to as NYC throughout the entire text started to give me the ick when I heard “En Y Cee” for the 200th time in a row.
Because the New York Yankees play a minor part in this Daniel Hurst thriller, it’s appropriate to remember that not even the great Babe Ruth hit a home run every time at bat. Likewise, not every novel that Daniel Hurst writes is equivalent to a home run, but when he writes well there’s no one better. Look at chapters 9 through 12 in Her Husband’s Mistake to see what I mean.
Unfortunately the remainder of the book does not represent the best of Daniel Hurst’s writing, though he does create for his main characters a gut-wrenching dilemma not unlike Sophie’s Choice with a shocking resolution.
Jack and Lorna are a married couple from the UK in their forties. They have two children, Maddy and Alex. Maddy is about to turn 21 and Alex, 18. Fifteen years ago they lived in New York where Jack worked for a bank. While driving alone to a conference in Connecticut, he accidentally struck and killed a pedestrian, a boy named Conrad, and fled the scene, confessing his crime only to Lorna.
Fearing that he might be discovered as the driver, Jack convinces Lorna to hurriedly move back to the UK, where they both live with the guilt of Conrad’s death and their coverup, never intending to return to the States until fifteen years later when Maddy and Alex beg them for a short holiday in New York. But Conrad’s devastated family was rich and powerful and was patiently plotting their revenge.
The author reprises his familiar themes of secrets and betrayals in this book which lead to that gut-wrenching dilemma, but the aftermath to the shocking resolution was too hokey for my taste and Hurst looks like he’s leaving himself a possible sequel to a story which does not deserve one.
Without belaboring the baseball metaphor, I won’t call this book a strike out, but it’s sadly no better than a stand-up double.
What would you do to protect your spouse or better yet your whole family… especially your children?
This is a fast paced thriller set when a family leaves the UK for a holiday celebration in New York for their children’s birthdays. Seems to be like the perfect getaway but New York holds secrets and dangers that mom and dad would never want their kids to be aware of.
But what could happen on a quick trip from their haunting life in New York from 15 years earlier?
This audiobook kept me engaged and listening every chance that I had. The narration fit the accents to the characters perfectly, though at times the man’s voice gave me the ick when he was being dramatic.
I never expected the outcome nor could I have ever predicted what was going to be the end.
If you like audiobooks and fast paced thrillers, this is one for you especially with the unpredictable ending.
Thank you Daniel Hurst for a truly shocking story. I can not wait to see if this one will continue.
Also, thanks to netgalley, the publisher, the narrators and everyone who made this audiobook happen. I received this audio version of this book in exchange for my honest review. Preorder today! Releasing on 9/30/23!
The beginning was boring and got kind of annoying when the "mistake" kept being alluded to but they wouldn't say what happened. I just wanted to know what it was! Things start to really pick up once you find out the "mistake" and the last 75% got dark and was hard to put down. The story is told through multiple POVs which I liked. Overall, I would recommend this book if you're looking for a quick thriller.
ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed the dual narration on this book! It made it very clear and easy to remember who was speaking and really brought the characters to life! The story is about a seemingly normal family in England who plan a trip to New York to celebrate their children’s birthdays but have been dreading it because of something that happened when they lived there in the past. The story half my attention the entire time and I can honestly say I didn’t see the ending coming at all. If you’re into psychological thrillers and mysteries, try this book out!
I was so intrigued by the beginning of this one, and the build-up being spread over a variety of characters made for a fantastic reading experience. The way the pieces of this one fell into place and how the stakes grew higher with each chapter made for an incredible reading experience. As the story developed and more details came to light, I was so nervous about what would/could happen next. Lorna's shift in Chapter 24 really added another element of anxiety and suspense to the story. It was very well-woven together. The ending was intense and the epilogue was quite shocking too. This was a great, fast-paced read.
Very quick read by one of my fav authors! Although I guessed some of the twists, I still found the story interesting enough to listen to! The narration was good! I’ll always read what this author writes!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I read this very quickly and although I thought the premise was really good, and I was turning pages fast, something was missing…….. it just didn’t tick the boxes I thought it would in the end!
But I am going to try this author again next just to see if it was a one off!!
Once again this author didn't disappoint, the tension, the build up surrounding the family's trip to New York, had me hooked. What follows is unexpected, as usual. I couldn't read the words fast enough to discover how this book ended and what became of the family.
Another thoroughly enjoyable novel by Daniel Hurst! I feel like they’re firmly on track now (I know I know who am I etc etc) but after reading the last title I said I wished he trusted the reader a little bit more, that done over explaining was unnecessary therefore adding the kudos that I felt growth this time around.
A fairly short but gripping fast paced domestic thriller, both wholly believable and relatable. The characters felt authentic. The story was well structured and executed and it worked beautifully as an audiobook.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookature Audio for the opportunity to listen to this audio book in return for an honest review!
I love Daniel Hurst books, they are always solid reads for me. That being said, this was prob my least fav of his. I prefer his books with more twists and a faster pace. This one was slow and I didn’t like a single character.
It did keep my interest and I was able to finish it within a day. It’s not a long book. The narrators are good.
I was just waiting for more as far as what the “mistake” was. Don’t get me wrong, the mistake was awful but it wasn’t like a mind blowing thing like I have come to expect from Daniel Hurst’s books. It wasn’t anything sinister, it was just a tragic mistake…nothing sinister involved.
Overall I’m glad I read it, no regrets with his books. They are easy reads but some I just like better than others. I still recommend checking it out to decide for yourself. I remain psyched about whatever he comes out with next.
Review for 'Her Husband's Mistake' by Daniel Hurst.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Daniel Hurst, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

This is the fifth book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'The Doctor's Wife', 'My Daughter's Boyfriend', 'The Holiday Home' and 'The Doctor's Widow' and would highly recommend them all!!!
This novel consists of a prologue, 31 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
'Her Husband's Mistake' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Daniel discusses/includes suicide and threat to children.
AN ABSOLUTELY ADDICTIVE, THRILLING, UNPUTDOWNABLE HEART RACING AND EXPLOSIVE BOOK THAT WILL KEEP YOU UP LATE AT NIGHT UNTIL YOU TURN THE LAST PAGE!!
Wow!!! This book is fantastically written and had me hook, line and sinker from beginning to end. The descriptions were so in depth and vivid that the hair on my arms was standing on the ends and my heart was pounding throughout. The synopsis, title and cover were perfect for the storyline.
Another HUGE success by the extremely talented Daniel Hurst!! Daniel is one of those extremely talented authors who has written so many books but yet each one I have read has been just as gripping, unique and explosive as the next!! How he does it I have no idea but whatever you are doing Daniel, keep doing it!!! I absolutely loved this unique page turning explosive page turner. I was absolutely absorbed throughout this psychological thriller. It is filled with tension, drama, family, suspense, lies, deceit, romance, secrets, love, and omg the twist!!! I DID NOT see the twists coming at all and there were more than one!!! Just when I think everything had been worked out and things were settling down BOOM there was another bombshell!! A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS Daniel!! It is getting harder and harder to shock me but by God you did that over and over and over!!! What an ending!!! One of the most gripping unputdownable nerve wracking psychological thrillers I have EVER read!!! You have one hell of a talent and I cannot wait to get hold of your previous and future books in this series. I cannot remember the last time I was so hooked by a book but you managed that big time!!! I loved that the book is told from different perspectives and each of their stories/chapters were perfectly weaved together to show us everything that is going on and how each of the characters are thinking and feeling throughout. The storyline is filled with shocks, suspense, tension, deceit, and everything you could ask for in a psychological thriller!!. There was so much going on and it was very fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. The surrounding atmosphere was absolutely perfect and the narrative ensures you are completely absorbed into the storyline with the characters coming to life all around you thanks to Daniel's evocative writing skills and Tamsin and Nathaniel's amazing narratives. If you are ever in a reading slump then any of Daniels books are guaranteed to pull you out of it!!!! I lost count how many times I had funny looks shouting out don't do it as I was walking on the school run listening to this amazing book!! This is one of those books that I really can't say much about the storyline without giving anything away so I'll try to be very careful. It is definitely a thought provoking book and makes one you realise how one moment and one action can make such a massive difference in life. During the book there are so many butterfly affects which goes to show how one small action can have such a large ripple affect which could continue for years. My heart was absolutely in my throat during one moment, especially as a mother I can't imagine having to make that decision and I hope to God I would never have to. If I had to ..... Oops that's all I can say. Have I left you in suspense? Well you'll just have to pick up your copy and find out yourself!!! This book is absolutely addictive and I read it in one sitting. I absolutely loved the cliff hanging explosive twist at the end that leaves you wanting more! It kept me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails with my heart absolutely pounding throughout especially at the end! I really am looking forward to the next book by this extremely talented author. A gripping, all consuming addictive page turner!!!
Clear your schedule before you start as I read this in one sitting as I could not put it down!! Practically every chapter ended on a cliff hanger so no way could I put it down!! Absolutely hooked!! I would absolutely love to see this turned into a movie!!!!
This is one of the few books that I have listened to 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but for the second time I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrators Nathaniel Priestley and Tamsin Kennard who both did an amazing job bringing this story and the characters to life. I have previously listened to 'Her First Child' by Sheryl Browne, 'The Suspect' by Kathryn Croft and 'My Daughters Boyfriend' also by Daniel Hurst
that were all also narrated by Tamsin Kennard and I would highly recommend listening to or reading them all as it they re other fantastic page turners from other great authors!! I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity. I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Daniel but also to listening to more books narrated by both Tamsin and Nathaniel!
The characters were all strong and realistic and thanks to Daniel's absolutely fantastic writing skills and Tamsin and Nathaniel's amazing narrative skills they all come to life when you are turning the pages. My heart went out to Lorna but not as much as it went out to their children Alex and Maddy but again.....I really can't say why or anything else in regards to the book itself as it's too easy to give anything away. Both Tamsin and Nathaniel were perfect to portray the voices of each of the characters helping me like or dislike the characters even more! I will stop here as I will give too much away if I say anymore and I really don't want to spoil it for future readers so I wont say anything else and let other readers make their own minds up about how they feel about the characters.. Regardless of whether you love or hate the characters they all worked perfectly together to make this an addictive and explosive storyline!!
This is exactly why you are one of my favourite male authors Daniel! An absolute must read author!! I cannot wait to read all your previous and future books!! Here's to your next success 🥂
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the prologue of Daniel's 'The Couple In The Cabin' which promises to be just as gripping as this book and is one I'm definitely looking forward to reading myself!!!
Overall another absolutely heart racing, suspense filled, unputdownable addictive page turner psychological thriller filled with twists!

217 pages/ 5 hours 35 minutes
This book is just 99p to purchase, free with kindle unlimited, £7.99 on paperback, £16 for the audiobook via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

It was her husband's mistake...but now her family must pay the price...
It's no secret I love Daniel Hurst's books and I will push small children out of the way in my mission to get my hands on every single one of them...lol For it goes without saying that Hurst knows how to deliver a quick and highly entertaining thriller with so many twists. And what I love about a Hurst thriller is that the action is fast paced and every single second is a thrill ride with surprising twists. I love how he encompasses each character to bring forth their own unique perspective and how the story unfolds around them all. And in each case, his cast of characters are minimal. This one actually had a few more than usual but boy, what a ride!
A UK family are en route to New York for a four day holiday as per their children's request for their 21st and 18th birthdays respectively. It was the one thing Lorna and Jack did not want to give them. And so they refused their request at every turn. They were not going back to New York City. End of. But having spent the first few years of their lives in the Big Apple, Maddy and Alex were keen to return and lap up all the NYC had to offer. For Maddy, it was a Yankees game with her dad whilst for Alex, it was a Broadway show.
The question is why were Lorna and Jack so resolute in their refusal? Without even considering their children's wishes? It's because of something that happened back when they were living in New York fifteen years ago. Something so horrible that changed their lives completely. It also meant they could never return. But Maddy and Alex know nothing of what happened because they were just six and three at the time. And now they want to go back to NYC and revisit the place they spent their early years.
It's only for four days. What could possible go wrong? And it's a big city. No one will know they are there. And so off they fly to New York, Lorna practically hyperventilating at the sheer thought of what could possibly go wrong should their past come back to bite them? Four days. That's all.
All is going well on their first day in the Big Apple. Until that evening when Maddy and Jack go to a Yankees game and Lorna takes Alex to the Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera. And then all hell breaks loose when the children disappear from each venue. CCTV footage reveals Alex being lead away by a man and Maddy by a woman.
Is this a coincidence or a targeted abduction?
Lorna and Jack believe they know but how to get to the bottom of it and get their children back without involving the police? That's anyone's guess. And then an ultimatum is given.
How far would you go to save the lives of your children?
Oh. My. Gosh. Oh-em-gee! Daniel Hurst does it again. Another quick read to devour in a matter of hours. Although I prefer his home-grown thrillers this one just had bite and tenacity that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. I love how we heard from Maddy and Alex as well as Lorna and Jack, as is Hurst's unique style. And then there is the shocking twist at the end...was I surprised? Yes and no. I wasn't surprised but it was a surprise, if that makes any sense...lol And it left you wondering just what would happen next. No sequel is needed because I think that is the beauty of Hurst's thrillers...readers are left to make up their own minds.
So it goes without saying that I really enjoyed this book. After a few of his recent ones weren't quite as up to parr as usual, I was thrilled to see him back with a bang with this one. This is the Daniel Hurst I know and love. And I look forward to reading more and more. I still have an ever growing pile of his books to read so I won't be lost for company.
I did note that some people mentioned the description giving the whole story away...I didn't think so. Maybe one or two things could have been left out of it but as for the whole story being revealed...no. In fact, when I read the description whilst still reading the book, I thought it didn't tell me anything. But if you're like me, when it comes to Daniel Hurst I don't even bother reading the description, I just click "request", "pre-order" or "buy now" without doing so. Because I know I am going to be given one hell of a ride anyway.
The king of twists, author Daniel Hurst, is back following The Doctor's Widow with a twisty standalone psychological thriller, HER HUSBAND'S MISTAKE —this time taking readers outside of England to NYC on vacation with their family to the scene of the crime.
This is not their first trip to the Big Apple. Jack did a horrific thing years ago, and they swore they would never return. Someone is waiting for them with REVENGE on their mind in this suspenseful race against time. Who will make it out alive?
Lorna and Jack are an English couple who 15 years ago lived in New York with Jack's job. However, one night, a tragedy occurred that would change the trajectory of their lives. A husband's bad mistake will now cost the family. You can't hide forever.
At the time, Jack finally confessed to Lorna (implicating her), and they decided to return to England rather than confessing or going to the authorities. Thus far, they have managed to keep this under the radar.
However, it is the children's upcoming birthday, and Maddie and Alex want to go to NYC to see the sites. They cannot say no to their children. Jack and Lorna think returning to the crime scene is a bad mistake. However, they cannot tell the children about the past, so they agree.
They did not consider social media and the kids posting that would leave them open for REVENGE and a deadly game of cat-and-mouse.
Jack made a terrible mistake years ago, and they soon realize they are making a second mistake by going back.
They arrive in New York. Maddie is going to a baseball game with her dad and Alex to the theater with his mom when they both turn up missing.
The kids have no idea that their parents dreaded this trip and what has occurred in the past. Frantic, the parents contact the authorities, but soon, the couple put two and two together, realizing this is about the past and payback. How did they know? Now, they are kidnapped, and it is not money they want. The entire family is in danger.
Their past has caught up with them.
The worst request is what Lorna has to do to free her children. Will she do it? If she does, can she believe the kidnapper will return her children safely? This scene will make you hold your breath.
HER HUSBAND'S MISTAKE is a fun, short, and entertaining thriller that will keep you on edge in this spine-chilling domestic suspense to see how this will turn out. The scary part is that this is a realistic situation and could happen in real life.
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley, who were fantastic and delivered an engaging performance.
Thanks to Hachette UK - Bookouture for a gifted ALC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.
Daniel Hurst is a master at writing quick thrillers that will keep you hanging on every word. I adore listening to his books on audio.
Narrated by Tamsin Kennard and Nathaniel Priestley, two of my favourite audiobook narrators as their tone flows and is conversational which makes it easy to follow along as if I’m right there in the story with them.
Lorna and Jack lived in New York until 15 years ago. Jack made a grave mistake and they fled New York with their children, moved back to the UK and vowed to never return.
Now, 15 years later their children, Maddie and Alex are turning 21 and 18 and want nothing except to go on vacation to New York to see where they lived so many years ago. With a lot of reluctance Jack and Lorna agree and the family heads to New York.
Not long after arriving, Maddie and Alex are abducted. Can Lorna and Jack beat the clock to get their children back safely while not exposing to the police what happened all those years ago?
Not a particularly unique plot but we’ll done and very entertaining nonetheless. I always enjoy Hurst’s audiobooks and am looking forward to the next.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for a copy of this audiobook.
This is the third book that I've read by Hurst now and they've all been great!
We meet the family as they prepare for a big holiday to New York. The children are 18 & 21 this year and it's a special treat. However, the parents are clearly disturbed and worried about returning to NY - but we don't know why. The apprehension doesn't diminish once they arrive, but they all make plans for a trip to the theatre and a baseball game - when the children go missing, we start to hear about what happened 15years ago!
I loved that we are told quite early on that something had happened in New York 15years ago, but it's a long while before we actually find out what this is.
The story is told through multiple pov's which helps us to understand the story bit by bit, but we are also able to get a feel for the worries and emotions of each character.
It was easy to connect with our 4 main characters who were relatable and believable - the excitement of the children visiting the famous NYC then their fear when taken - and the parents worries about the past catching up on them and then total chaos as they try and find their children.
This was quite a short book and therefore a super quick read - the tension evident from start to finish making me race through it.
The plot seemed fairly cut and dry but there were a couple of surprises and the epilogue was brilliant - totally hadn't expected that!! I'm wondering from that, whether there might be a sequel to this one? 🤞
