When WDFW officials receive an anonymous tip that poachers might be taking young falcons and eagles from nests around eastern Washington and shipping them to a Russian oligarch, Washington State fish and wildlife officer Luke McCain and his colleagues must go to new heights to save the federally protected raptors.
Meanwhile, domestic animals are going missing in the region, and Luke investigates the gruesome remains. As details of the animals’ mysterious deaths emerge, rumors explode that a mystical creature—the ever-elusive bigfoot—may be responsible. Thinking a more plausible explanation is likely, Luke endeavors to unravel the clues leading authorities to whoever, or whatever, is killing the animals before bigfoot mania overruns the region and more beloved animals are slaughtered.
Each summer, in July, there is the Nile Valley Days event held at Jim Sprick Community Park, which is mentioned and described in this book. Rob Phillips, being a local, always has a booth with his books there. Last July, I told him that I was really disappointed in his last book, Cascade Manhunt. He seemed concerned that I would feel that way and asked me why? "Well, it was too short!" And it got the laugh that I was looking for. Seriously though, he is one of my favorite authors! Each of the books in this series has captured my imagination and has held my interest right up until the final period. Creature of the Cascades presents a very common theme that is evident in this area, well in all of the Pacific Northwest, and many points beyond. Bigfoot/Sasquatch merchandise is on the shelves, and clothing racks, in outlets all over the state. I'm surprised that there are not more books published about the illusive (mythical???) creature. He has done a great job of presenting the excitement that surrounds the possible sitting of the unexplained being real. As well as the lengths that some will go to profit off of others.
As with previous books by this author, I offer you my standard disclaimer that I am Phillips' brother and therefore have a significant reason to give these books five-star reviews.
That being said, this latest Luke McCain novel continues the author's exhibition of local knowledge and invokes fun, suspense and some tugs at the heart. Phillips is at his best when he reveals the story (and often parallel plots) with cliffhangers at the ends of the chapters. That is no different here.
The McCain series (which can easily be read in any sequence or order) provides the reader with a comfortable escape to storylines that invoke just enough real scenes and settings. It's like putting on a favorite flannel shirt and jeans, and putting your feet up by a roaring fire.
Readers who look for some authenticity in the way that the main protagonist does his job will appreciate the effort that the author makes in each of his books to be true to wildlife agents in the line of their duties.
Pick this one up. You can almost smell the fresh pine scent wafting through the Washington State forests.
It only took me a month to read because of life, not because of this book! It was probably my favorite in this series!! I read about 6% then started reading again today and finished it within a few hours! Loved the mythology and how it was resolved. Again I’ve loved all these books, except I believe number 3 that involved the cartels but that was my preference. I love the attention to details and how this author knows his characters and sub characters!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book!! Can't wait to read the next one . Every Luke McCain novel has been totally entertaining and very well written. Great imagination and a lifetime of research have gone into these books. Definitely recommend the series!
Just read this whole series one book after another. I was fully engages the whole time. The author is great at incorporating multiple plots into each story. He also does a good job of remaining factual in his accounts regarding wildlife.
The imagination has no boundaries. Rob Phillips continues to entertain with nearly believable stories. Once again without disappointment you succeeded in providing a great story. Please continue creating the Lucas McCain magic. Thank you.
The many plots of these novels has came to be a highlight of the works! It she's each novel almost impossible to put down, much to my wife's chagrin I hope they continue to be so entertaining .
This whole series has been fun to read. Wilderness mysteries with wit and a touch of romance. The characters are a joy and its a quick enjoyable read. With a smart loyal loving dog.
