When legends bite back...

Lemon Ziegler wants to escape rural Devil’s Elbow, Pennsylvania to attend college―but that’s impossible now that she’s expected to impersonate the town’s lake monster for the rest of her life. Her family has been secretly keeping the tradition of Old Lucy, the famed (and very fake) monster of Lake Lokakoma, alive for generations, all to keep the tourists coming. Without Lemon, the town dies, and she can’t disappoint her grandparents . . . or tell her best friends about any of it. That includes Troy Ramirez, who has been covertly in love with Lemon for years, afraid to ruin their friendship by confessing his feelings.

When a very real, and very hungry monster is discovered in the lake, secrets must fall by the wayside. Determined to stop the monster, Lemon and her best friends are the only thing standing between Devil’s Elbow and the monster out for blood.

If you are obsessed with stories about local monsters and love tales that feature a band of quirky friends trying to solve a mystery, you will like A Misfortune of Lake Monsters. But if you want these two elements executed perfectly in the same story, then you will absolutely fall in love with it. There is an Egyptian saying that roughly translates to "the spell has turned on its caster." I'm a sucker for stories that remind me of that saying.

One thing I wish to commend Wolverton on is how "visual" A Misfortune of Lake Monsters is. Wolverton does an amazing job of painting a picture with her words. The tone, the pacing, the descriptions, and the vivid characters and settings turned this book into a production. I genuinely felt there was a movie playing in my head as I was reading. So much so, in fact, that I could imagine what type of music that would be playing during certain scenes.

Another aspect I really enjoyed is the characters. With horror, I usually focus on the experience and don’t expect much from the characters, but Wolverton offers a highly appreciated surprise with her characters. Lemon, Troy, and Darrin are fun to follow because they feel like real teenagers. While I liked all of them for different reasons, I think Darrin is my favorite, but I can imagine that this is the type of story where each reader will have their favorite character. But seriously, Darrin is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs.

I won’t go into many details here because experiencing this story unfold without knowing anything in advance was definitely part of the fun for me. But if you want a fast-paced story that keeps you on your toes while somehow managing to both scare you and pull a laugh out of you, then A Misfortune of Lake Monsters is going to be one of your favorite reads of the year. This was a great debut by Nicole M. Wolverton, and I definitely want more stories like this from her in the future.

A fantastic cryptid horror that interlaces with a sweet little romance. After years of the Ziegler family perpetuating a hoax that there is a lake monster called Old Lucy, a real monster shows up and it is hungry.

An addictive read that is strange to the core. A water based horror that makes a big splash that you can sink your teeth into. If you like books that feature giant underwater creatures that have extreme appetites then this book may be for you. A fun, scary, and sweet read.

A terrifying, fun horror full of gore and monsters.

A Misfortune of Lake Monsters follows Lemon Ziegler, a teenager who wants to escape her rural hometown and go to college. Except, her future is already set: she has to keep up the family tradition of impersonating a lake monster. The Ziegler’s are in charge of keeping the tradition of Old Lucy, a famous monster of Lake Lokakoma, alive and keeping business booming. On top of that, Lemon has to keep the secret from her friends. But when a real lake monster appears and blood is spilled, Lemon confesses her family’s legacy to her friends, and the trio have to figure out how to stop the monster before it’s too late.

If you love monster stories or cryptids, then this is definitely the book for you! The vibes of this book are soooo good. I loved the small, rural town setting and how everyone was so obsessed with Old Lucy. It has such a strong start with Lemon pretending to be the lake monster. But then it gets so intense! I was on the edge of my seat anytime they were at the lake. There are such tense, gripping moments with such strong atmosphere all throughout the novel.

I really enjoyed Lemon. She is so loyal and even though the life her grandparents are guiding her towards isn’t what she wants, she’s fully committed to do it anyways. I really liked that she resigned with what her future was going to be only for the course of the novel to shift that. Her arc was really well done and she’s so fierce and brave. I loved that we also got Troy’s perspective, it was nice to see everything from both of their viewpoints. I really enjoyed Troy and how much he truly loved Lemon and wanted what was best for her. Their romance is so sweet. Darrin and Amelia were such good side characters, and honestly, I want another book from Amelia’s perspective about her life—it would be so cool!

Overall, if you’re looking for a ya horror about a lake monster then check this book out! It’s the perfect spooky summer read!

Received a free acr for my review. The book was OK. The middle of the book just dragged on. We don't need pages and pages of thoughts. Just keep telling the plot and story. Quick read.

Plot: The MC is raised by her grandparents. The MC and her grandparents run a tourist scam where someone in the family dresses up like the Lake Monster aka American Lochness. Weird and aggressive behavior from some sort of behavior starts happening that eats one of her dogs, and a couple people. She tell her family, her family doesn't believe her, then the monster attacks her and her family. The feds start snooping and step in. The government ends up being the reason the monster is there. Her and her friends team up and solve the issue.

The story is a good, just not executed in the best way.

Plot incudes: Dinosaurs, the feds, time travel, mystery, and crime.

Nicole M. Wolverton's A Misfortune of Lake Monsters masterfully blends YA fantasy and horror into a gripping tale that captivates from the very first page. At its heart, the novel follows Lemon Ziegler, a teenager whose dreams of escaping her small town are thwarted by an unusual family legacy: she must impersonate Old Lucy, the fictitious lake monster of Lake Lokakoma, to keep the tourist-dependent town of Devil’s Elbow afloat.

The plot is an ingenious mix of personal struggle and supernatural horror. Wolverton skillfully juxtaposes Lemon's mundane teenage desires against the extraordinary burden she bears. Her internal conflict is compelling—torn between duty to her family and her own aspirations, Lemon’s plight will resonate deeply with readers. The stakes are raised dramatically when a genuine and deadly monster emerges from the lake, threatening the very existence of Devil’s Elbow and forcing Lemon to confront her fears and secrets.

Character development is a standout feature of the novel. Lemon is a relatable and multi-dimensional protagonist whose growth is both believable and inspiring. Her evolution from a reluctant guardian of a town’s myth to a determined protector against real danger is expertly depicted. Wolverton also excels in crafting the supporting characters, particularly Lemon’s best friends, including Troy Ramirez. Troy’s unspoken love for Lemon adds a poignant layer to the narrative, enriching the emotional landscape of the story. Each character is imbued with distinct traits and personal histories that make them memorable and integral to the unfolding drama.

Fans of YA fantasy and horror will find much to admire in A Misfortune of Lake Monsters. Wolverton’s writing is atmospheric and immersive, bringing the eerie town of Devil’s Elbow and its lake to life with vivid, evocative descriptions. The suspense and horror elements are well-balanced, providing enough chills and thrills without overshadowing the story’s emotional core. The introduction of a real monster in the lake serves as a thrilling catalyst for action, forcing characters to reveal their true selves and testing their bonds of friendship and loyalty.

Moreover, the novel’s themes of tradition versus progress, the weight of familial expectations, and the courage to face one's fears are universally appealing. Wolverton deftly explores these themes without sacrificing the pace or intensity of the plot, ensuring that readers are both entertained and emotionally engaged.

A Misfortune of Lake Monsters is a stellar example of YA fantasy horror that delivers on multiple fronts. Nicole M. Wolverton has crafted a tale that is as emotionally resonant as it is terrifying, populated with richly developed characters and set against a backdrop that is both quaint and menacing. This novel is a must-read for fans of the genre, promising a thrilling ride that leaves a lasting impression.

This was super fun and hard to put down, between our heroine's adorable friends and the hint of a Stranger Things flavor. It's going to make a perfect summer read, especially if you're on a beach or a dock somewhere!

This was a lot of fun! It was darker than I expected which is always a win. I appreciated the dual POV’s between Lemon and Troy. That really worked for the plot. The dynamic between the friend group was perfect. I absolutely loved all the different personalities together and even the side characters. They all had their unique voices and quirks. I especially couldn’t get enough of Amelia. She was so interesting! Oh! And the town gossip made me laugh sometimes.

While there were so many great characters and so much heart in this book, there were also plenty of intense and gory moments too. It was amazing how the author was able to balance both so well. I was on the edge of my seat through so much of this. There were also plenty of jump scares that came out of nowhere. The pacing was perfect!

Overall, this was a great time! I would recommend to anyone who enjoys cryptid horror or creature features.

Lemon Ziegler lives with her grandparents on Lake Lokakoma in rural Pennsylvania. She just wants to graduate high school and study to become a veterinarian, but – since her cantankerous grandpa is getting too old – the family has voted that she take over the family business of running ferry tours on the lake, which is famous for sightings of a lake monster the town calls "Old Lucy." Unfortunately, she's also voted (by the family) to BE Old Lucy, since Old Lucy is really a hoax the family has kept running for generations in order to keep the town alive. But all the plans get upended when a real lake monster shows up and eats people.

This was a lot of fun to read. It's supposedly a horror novel but the horror is pretty light (not that I'm complaining). There's a romance subplot as well, and the narration switches back and forth between Lemon and her young man, which sometimes led to confusion while reading. Still, it's a lot of fun and just what I needed in a (sorta) reading slump.

Who does not like a good lake monster story! I liked how the story alternates between Lemon and Troy’s perspective’s. There were many shocking moments and twist and turns. This book definitely kept me guess and I loved it. Note to self: stay out of the lake this summer! I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am laving this review voluntarily.

Huge thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC!*

There’s something to be said for the depth of emotions that really well done YA books can pull off. Often times, its focused around loss or love. But when we get a story that deals with loss AND love, you know that you should probably cancel any plans, as your heart is going to be aching and your attention will be focused completely on the story you’re about to read.

I’ve not read anything from Wolverton previously, but for a first time experience, this was so very well done that I’ll absolutely be seeking out more of her work. I hadn’t seen much of this book shared around in my usual haunts, but when I saw Nicole herself, post about it on IG, I was immediately intrigued. When I read the synopsis, I was hooked. Pun intended? Sure, we’ll go with that!

What I liked: The story follows three small town friends, Lemon, Darrin and Tory. Lemon and Troy secretly love each other, though they’ve not told each other. Everyone else knows it, but hey, grade 12 and all, no need to push these two together if they’re going their separate ways after graduating, right? Lemon though, has a huge secret. For decades, her family has perpetrated the myth that the lake has a sea monster, Old Lucy. They get in the Old Lucy costume and make sure sightings happen so that tourists visit and spend their cash. Lemon herself, is struggling. Her parents have died and she’s moved in with her grandparents.

All is going seemingly well, even if Lemon is angry about being forced into this life and not able to leave and pursue veterinary school. That is, until a real sea monster attacks her and her dog and even more secrets are exposed.

It’s from here that Wolverton really shines. The first quarter or so is all about setting the bowling pins up and from this moment forward the pins are knocked down, one by one. There’s heartbreak, trust issues, secret government agencies, coming-of-age perfection and through it all, we get to see the three friends band together and work as a team to try and not only get to the bottom of what this monster is, but also to ensure the future of their small town.

Like many YA books before, this one had me smiling, crying and pumping my fist in the air, as the story unfolded and we see Lemon, Troy and Darrin grow up over a short span of time, the reality of the wider world showing its ugly face.

The ending is spot on and thankfully designed in such a way that it feels like a true ending. Would I like another book featuring these characters? Sure. But if this is the only story we get with this trio, I’d be a-ok with it because of how wonderfully developed they are, which is a testament to the deft writing of Wolverton.

What I didn’t like: I, personally, am not a fan of first person POV shifts and that is how this book is told. Each chapter is told through a different POV – namely between Lemon and Troy – and it is very jarring, especially as we move deeper into the book and the tensions rise. I would’ve preferred a 3rd person POV throughout, but that’s just me and my own reading tastes. Once I got over that initial shift, it was easy transitions the rest of the way.

Why you should buy this: As far as lake monster stories go, this one is top notch. Told with rapid pacing, rising tension and a really well done finale that was showcased in a very cinematic way, Wolverton has really knocked this one out of the park. Lemon is such a great main character and watching her and Troy find each other through the stress of their situations was an absolute highlight.

This is a creature feature about a lake monster but with a a twist.

This small town thrives on Old Lucy, a lake monster which drives in tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of something unknown. The town's identity is based on this local legend and sightings. But it's all fake.

Lemon is soon to graduate high school when she is chosen to carry on an old family tradition. Donning a latex costume and ensuring the legend of Old Lucy stays alive for the sake of her family and the town itself. Her family has been behind the "monster" for generations.

But when a very real, very hungry lake monster starts to eat the local populace, it's up to Lemon, her grandparents, and her two best friends to stop the carnage while maintaining the Old Lucy traditions.

Add to that federal agents who seem to know the truth, theories about wormholes and time travel, and the origins of the monster itself, and this novel really packs quite the punch.

It is a YA novel and isn't explicitly gory but it's definitely a fun read for adults and younger teens alike. If you're looking for a fun, fast paced creature feature with just enough weirdness to keep it engaging throughout than I highly recommend this.

I received an ARC of this book through Netgalley with no consideration. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.

Well, that was a disappointing read. The plot sounded so fun, but the way it was executed wasn't. The (boring!) romance took up way too much of the book, and I couldn't stand the guy's chapters (calling himself a "caveman" over his protective feelings for the girl he liked... well, it just wasn't for me). The writing also felt too juvenile for me. I read a lot of YA, and this was one of the few times the book felt too young for me. And I don't think the book needed the disclaimer that it was a horror novel.

I thought this book had promise but feel short for me. This book is very YA dealing with high school kids. There were some chapters that could have been edited out so it could have just gotten to the point. This book had very light horror. This book just disappointed me in many ways.

What a fun book this is!

It's wistful, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking. The relationship between our trio of friends (and especially one duo) is incredibly sweet.

Our lake monster turned into quite the surprise and I had so much fun figuring out how they were going to solve their monstrous problem.

Would definitely read the author again!

A legend turns real in this YA horror novel.
👹
All Lemon wants is to leave Devil’s Elbow, Pennsylvania for college and never return, but she’s stuck there impersonating the town’s lake monster for her family. They are in charge of secretly keeping the tradition of Old Lucy, the monster of Lake Lokakoma, alive so that tourists will flock to the area. And she can’t even tell anyone about it! When a real monster is discovered in the lake, Lemon and her best friends fight to stop the monster and save their town.
😱
Starting this at night was probably not one of my better decisions, but I did read it in one sitting because I was on the edge of my seat! Fans of Stranger Things will love this book I love a dual POV and a good romance thrown in so this was right up my alley! This title releases July 2! Special thanks to the author for sending an ARC.

Thank you to Netgalley and CamCat Books for the advanced copy. The opinion is my own.
A young adult book where Lemon Ziegler has to deal with the end of highschool and having her future aspirations of going to college to be a veterinarian clash with the family business imposed on her. Said family business includes includes impersonating Old Lucy a Loch Ness monster type of hoax that has helped the town stay afloat since before her grandparents time.
The appearance of an actual lake monster not only threatens to drive all that necessary tourism away it threatens everyone's life.
It's a book with two first person POV's, Lemon and Troy's, one of her best friends and also who has had a crush on her for years. Besides the plot twist that certainly takes quite a bit to stomach personally, everything else flows really nice. There are a few monologues where crushes are talked about with all the teenage passion possible, government agencies, a hoax threatened by the real thing, some blood and gore and adults needing a good slap.
All in all, I think it's a good book for people that like their plots with teen romance but need some blood to really enjoy it-

I loved this book. Give me all the creepy lake monsters and teen romance!! I adored the characters in this book, sweet, quirky and funny. This is the story of Lemon Ziegler and her friends Troy and Darrin as they maneuver their way through their senior year of high school and life in Devil’s Elbow, Pennsylvania. Old Lucy is the monster that supposedly lives in the lake, but does she really exist? Nicole does a great job getting us into the minds of these kids with a great dual POV between Lemon and Troy. This story was quite frightening at times, but I loved the humor and the sweet budding romance. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Thrilling and fun! This fast-paced YA thriller was exciting to read. I enjoyed the concept and the characters!

The story was full of conspiracy theories, deadly monsters, friendship, and so much more!

I loved not only the thrilling monster hunt and mystery but also the sweet romance that was sprinkled in as well.

Tropes to look forward to here are: found family, friends to lovers, first love, sweet romance, thrilling monsters, mysteries, government agents, high stakes, family business, and coming of age themes!

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked this book! I have an issue with teenagers in novels; they always come off as caricatures or as adults trapped in a teen's body. However, I think Wolverton did a great job of creating believable teenagers. The characters were allowed to breathe and be unique without falling into stereotypes or getting pegged into the typical, fictional teenager tropes.

The mystery at the core of the novel was interesting as well, even if I wish there had been more build up or lore to the solution. This took the whole concept of cryptids and local legends and flipped it on it's head. Definitely an enjoyable narrative to read!

I really enjoyed this teen read. Likeable characters, competent writing and some quite full on action. I spotted a few editorial errors…

Clamor used instead of clamber which seems to be ridiculously common,

everything instead of everyone and works instead of words. Only noting these as it's an advance copy.

Decent book.

2.75 stars, rounded up.

This is my first read of 2025! And it was… just an okay read for me personally.

Honestly, the only thing that kept me from DNFing this book is me wanting to know the details surrounding the lake monster—how it got there, how to defeat it, etc.. I will say that I was kind of disappointed once we got the answers, only because I was expecting something more intriguing and twisty, I guess.

The romance in this book. Oh boy. That ruined the last third of this story for me. The romance started off fine at the beginning of the book, and I actually thought the two teens crushing on each other was cute. But then all of a sudden, Lemon’s sole focus was wanting to kiss this guy, which was annoying and distracting, and so out of the blue. And once feelings were confessed, the amount of kissing during such a high-stakes situation was laughable and ridiculous at best.

While I’m on the topic, the believability of certain elements fell flat for me the further into the story I got. Obviously this is fiction, but some of the explanations of how certain things went down just felt… convenient and/or anti-climatic at times.

I think the writing was pretty good, and the author does a good job of portraying how teens speak for the most part.

I would give this author another chance in the future, if her future works sound interesting to me. And I’m glad I gave this book a chance, but it just didn’t hit like I’d hoped.

Ebook/YA Thriller: Teenager, Lemon, is a lot like Buffy. Where Buffy is stuck through fate to be a slayer, Lemon, was somehow voted to dress up like a lake monster for the rest of her life to fool the lake's tourists. Her depression is put aside when a real lake monster appears after an earthquake. Lemon has no superpowers, just responsibilities.
Even with the two first-person narrators, I really liked the book. It was a lot of fun.

This was one hell of a fun read!

Lemon's family has lived on the lake in Devil's Elbow for generations. The Ziegler family thrives on the legend of Old Lucy, the docile lake monster that lives in Lake Lakokoma. While her friends are preparing for college, Lemon is preparing to spend the rest of her life in the Old Lucy costume perpetuating the myth and ensuring tourism and revenue in the town of Devil's Elbow. Darrin and Troy have been friends with Lem since they were kids, never knowing her family secret. Troy's been holding a secret of his own, he is in love with Lemon. While Darrin is too transparent to hold any deep rooted secrets-he is a hard core conspiracy theorist who would die on the hill that Old Lucy exists. When a real monster appears in the lake and starts eating pets and people, Lemon spills her family secret to Darrin and Troy. Lemon. Troy, and Darrin find themselves fighting against time, the FBI, false friends, and keeping the legend of Old Lucy a pleasant one while trying to find a way to kill the monster.

I really enjoyed this book. The relationships felt real and all the history these characters shared felt completely believable. I loved these characters, Troy had my heart on the line the whole time! This was a little campy and goofy at times but overall a very enjoyable and suspenseful read! I highly recommend this one when it comes out on July 2nd, 2024! I'll definitely be thinking about this book the next time I jump into any body of water!

Very fun YA novel about a lake monster a la Loch Ness but has a really great twist. I loved the set up of our main character, Lemon, and her family having been the ones to perpetuate the myth of Old Lucy in their town of Devil’s Elbow (great town name!). But then of course, one day it turns out there is a real monster out there stalking, and it’s up to Lemon and her friends to stop it.
Definitely recommend for older teens, lots of strong language and some violent parts.

Thank you to NetGalley and CamCat Books/Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Titles for my arc in exchange for my unbiased opinion.

A Misfortune of Lake Monsters by Nicole M. Wolverton is a summer creature feature that is surprisingly gory and is seemingly X-Files-inspired as we follow Lemon Ziegler. Lemon wants to leave Devil's Elbow, Pennsylvania and go to college to be a vet, but her family's weird legacy is all that's stopping her. Voted by her family to be the new Old Lucy, Devil's Elbow's own cryptid, Lemon feels all but stuck. Until a real cryptid shows up.

I was so pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. I typically have a harder time reading YA because I find so many YAs boring, formulaic, and just not relatable in any sense. However, A Misfortune of Lake Monsters had me tapping through my kindle so fast. Between Lemon being a character who deserves so much and the story itself reminding me A LOT of an extended X-Files episode, this book has a lot going for it. Wolverton did such a great job with setting up Devil's Elbow and the legend of Old Lucy. Old Lucy has just enough detail to be creepy and leave room for a whole lot of gossip to spread her tale.

The only thing I was not a huge fan of was the romance in this. While I was rooting for it, I do wish that it took more of a backseat to the overall story. Especially when things really started picking up, I just do not care about teenage romances, especially as a thirty-something year old. Other than that, I loved this book. It's fun, a quick read, and the main character is really someone that you can get behind and cheer for.

Would recommend for my cryptid and X-Files lovers.
