Scavenger on the Run

Rate this book
Twenty years. Twenty years of running from her past, from HIM. Maude had thought herself safe in the windy city, that is, until the gods had other plans for her once more. Tasked to go on an unknown adventure by the Goddess of Death, Maude and Owen travel back to the city of New Orleans- back to the circus. Even knowing that she would be walking into a trap, Maude would do what was needed of her.
She was not prepared for the seemingly same circus, the same smells, and the very familiar magic, but most of all, Maude was not prepared to see HIM again. The truth of her situation would become more than she could bear.

I got this copy as an arc from the author! All comments are my own.

This was super fast pace and fun. I enjoyed reading more about Maudes and her crew. I really like Owen. I will say I got confused in some parts of this book but it didn’t make it any less enjoyable. I did enjoy this book a bit more than the first and I think it’s a good thing to keep your audience entranced in the second book.

This is the second book in the series. First book is The Three Ring Scavenger, so read it first so you have an idea of what’s going on and who is who.

This book was a bit spicer than the first which was nice. I will say I found one part a bit weird but it didn’t take away from the book. I don’t want to state what happens because I don’t want to spoil anything.

This is a dark romance, so please please please read all trigger warnings before reading this series. Your mental health is important!

3.5 stars rounded to a 4!

Some Spoilers
Honestly this is again a 4.5 for me. This is the 2nd book in the series, and I loved it just as much as the first book. With how the last book ended with Maude eating Muse I was really curious how the 2nd book would work. I mean I knew as a God he would have no problem coming back but I was curious how the dynamic would be, and OMG was it good. In a way Muse was proud of Maude for being powerful and clever enough to trick him and eat him like she did. Many times, in the book he said she was a powerful being and should bow before no one. One of my favorite quotes was and this is a partial version of it was "I truly cannot deny you anything. I just ask that you do not dim your own light and passion for the sake of trying to manage me. It will not have the outcome you desire". He loved her when she showed off how powerful she was. How can you not like a man who is willing to forgive you when you unalive them and encourages you to be the most powerful version of yourself!! The tension and buildup for these two was also really well done and lead to a very spicy scene which did make me wish there was more full-on spice scenes as it was done so well. The twist at the ending makes me so excited for the next book I cannot wait!

This book starts off 20 years after the first book and Maude and Owen are still together but are running an illegal speakeasy and adult house. The establishment has its own unsavory clientele who Owen and Maude partake in with the help of their reaper friend Dumah who is also the sometimes lover of Owen's. But one-night the Goddess of Death who likes to go by her Egyptian name Anubis pays Maude a visit with a riddle and quest that leads to them returning to a circus on the outskirts of New Orleans with the help of a newcomer and an old friend. The thing is Maude knows this a trap but still she goes but what she forgets it's that NONE of the Gods are to be trusted as they always have their own agenda and choices will have to be made and consequences she will have to live with.

My review is an ARC review:
This is book two in the series. (The Three Ring Scavenger book one) I LOVED this book. S.A. Burd sucks you into her stories, you get transported to another time-land or place. Her stories leave you wanting more. This series is just fire, it has everything; dark romance, fantasy, drama, HOT parts, darkness from the characters. (Definitely look up the triggers before reading).

This book I would say is even more steamy than book one. Check your trigger warnings.

I love how S.A. can make you love even the villains in her stories. Blows my mind all the awesome stuff that went on in the book. I love how it mostly took place right after book one. I got sucked in Maudes world and got to see how she felt, what was going through her mind after what happened with Muse. I loved how close she was with Owen. I loved how the other characters compliment the whole story, we meet new characters and read about old characters coming back. Maude & her friends go on another journey, see who they comes across along the way. Find out what happens once they get there!

There wasn't not one boring part of this story! It kept my focus til the very end. I can't wait to read more in this series!

MAUDE. AHH. The ending to this book has me dying. Part 2 of me dying at the end of a book in this series. I truly love the continued relationship of Owen and Maude. They are the perfect little duo without them being romantic (at least not *really* read it and you'll get what I mean). I love the introductions of the different Gods that had been hinted at in the first book, but also different shifters. I really love how broad this world seems to be, but also feels so small within its scope. It is an interesting feeling when reading and discovering more about everything going on. I am pleased where this book went, but also stressed the FFFFF out. S.A. Burd out here killing me with these cliffhangers, but it hurts so good. I can't wait for Book 3. HEAR THAT. CAN'T WAIT. Don't make me say the word! I might need it.

Definitely read book 1, you will be completely lost if you read book 2 first. Devour this series like I have so far.

Arc review

Actual rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice: 🌶🌶🌶

This is the second book in the series, and it was even better than the first book. The story is captivating, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. I love the plot twists and that cliffhanger at the end?! How can she leave me hanging like that?!

The characters are great, and I love how well they fit each other. We also get some new and interesting characters introduced into the storyline.

The spice level is a little higher than in the first book, which was great. Large parts of the book felt like being edged, with the talk of Owen's escapades but not getting to actually see them. In addition to the god old, "It's not time for that" torture. But what's pleasure without a little pain😏

I definitely recommend this series.

4.5***

This was great continuation of Maude's story. It had more magic and I enjoyed the addition of the runes. I also felt it was definitely steamier than the first in the best way. I loved seeing more of her and Owen's relationship and absolutely adore him. It was a little strange that Muse wasn't as angry as he should have been upon catching her again, however it worked and their tension was even stronger. I loved the ending (I will say thank goodness the next book is out so I don't have to wait) and did not see it coming. I am left wanting to know more of what Anubis's angle and plans are as well as to see what happens next for Maude, Owen, and Dumah with their next challenge waiting for them.

I got this book as an ARC reader, and I am NOT disappointed!

It’s a perfect short and spicy paranormal read that ties in mythology, and so much happens in such a short time frame that it leaves you dying for more!

Maude and Owen go through so much yet again after almost 30 years, and still manage to survive!

Definitely an amazing read if you want short and spicy to get you over a reading slump!

Read as an ARC reader. Be prepared for a book unlike any other you have ever read. I read a lot of Dark Romance, and this is not what I was expecting when I picked up the book. The book is dark, but not as dark as I was expecting. It is fast paced, and will leave you guessing with each turn of the page. I love the development of all the characters and the way the book sucks you into a world of mischief.

Book two In the Scavenger series and oh my gosh did it deliver. Werebear's, Vampires, Reapers, and more God and Goddess shenanigans.

Maude and Owen had me feeling some type of way in this book, the way that I wanted to see them together so dang badly. lots of voyeurism in this spicy dark romance.

This is the second book in the series. First book is The Three Ring Scavenger. You must read the first book first. I loved how this book picked up from the first. Enjoyed reading about Maude’s adventures and our lovely villain Muse. This book is spicy, thrilling, dark and captivating!
This is a dark romance so please check your trigger warnings.

I received this book as an arc from the author. Owen has been with Maude since the end of the last book (28 years), and goes on the journey with her and a reaper that Muse had previously dealt with. She is once again running a speakeasy in another part of the country. She’s paranoid about Muse finding her, and uses a lot of wards. Until, Owen can no longer see the future, and Maude is led back to the circus that started it all by a goddess who showed up in her place. There she finds Muse in a new body and intent on keeping her. The bulk of conflict in the story revolves around the werebears that Muse now leads (inhabiting their leaders body), Maude giving her submission to muse and being his mate, learning her true capabilities. She learns a lot about immortal beings. They save Owen from the leader that was to take over the pack, only to be faced with the goddess again who makes her choose who gets to live. I really enjoyed the story itself, I feel like the ending was very abrupt without much foreshadowing, the goddess is really only present in the story once before the end, serving to get her to the circus. The inner dialogue and thought explanations are better in this book. It could stand to have more foreshadowing in the middle of the story, but overall I enjoyed the book.

Yes, yes, yes, yes. This was the best follow up to Three Ring Scavanger. It gave me all of the feels and damned S.A. Burd and endings that rip your heart out and throw it on the floor. Maude and Muse is forever my favorite and the development in this one is *chef's kiss*

I love how the story of Maude and Owen continued after the first book. Don’t get your hopes up they don’t get together but they definitely make a good team. Dinah the reaper appears in this story and he’s amazing! I think I love him as much as Owen. Maude is still a spitfire but the plot twist this book had I didn’t see coming. You will be introduced to new Gods and shifters in this book. We do not like Oberon keep that in mind. A few characters from the last book make it into this one. The ending will throw you for sure. The Epilogue will definitely have you dealing for the rest of the story. It was also a lot more spicer in this book. I most certainly recommend this book but don’t read it until you have read The Three Ring Scavenger first or you won’t understand what is going on as this is a continued story.
