Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney #3

The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh

Rate this book
The third book in the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney Mystery series, which finds the amateur sleuths facing their most daunting challenge preventing the murder of the imperious Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

Someone is trying to kill Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Esteemed aunt of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, generous patroness of Mr. William Collins, a woman of rank who rules over the estate of Rosings Park with an unimpeachable sense of propriety—who would dare ? Lady Catherine summons her grand-nephew, Mr. Jonathan Darcy, and his investigative companion, Miss Juliet Tilney, to find out.

After a year apart, Jonathan and Juliet are thrilled to be reunited, even if the circumstances—finding whoever has thus far sabotaged Lady Catherine's carriage, shot at her, and nearly pushed her down the stairs—are less than ideal. Also less than their respective fathers, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Mr. Henry Tilney, have accompanied the young detectives to Rosings, and the two men do not interact with the same felicity enjoyed by their children.

With attempts against Lady Catherine escalating, and no one among the list of prime suspects seemingly capable of committing all of the attacks, the pressure on Jonathan and Juliet mounts—even as more gentle feelings between the two of them begin to bloom. The race is now on to provoke two one from the attempted murderer before it is too late—and one, perhaps, of love.

Claudia Gray is not my real name. I didn't choose a pseudonym because my real name is unpleasant (it isn't), because I'd always dreamed of calling myself this (I haven't) or even because I'm hiding from the remnants of that international diamond-smuggling cartel I smashed in 2003 (Interpol has taken care of them). In short, I took a pseudonym for no real reason whatsoever. Sometimes this is actually the best reason to do things.

I live in New Orleans. So far, in life, I've been a disc jockey, a lawyer, a journalist and an extremely bad waitress, just to name a few. I especially like to spend time traveling, hiking, reading and listening to music. More than anything else, I enjoy writing.

The perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, the third book in the Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney series is a fun dramystery in which the lead characters Jonathan and Juliet race to find a would-be murderer before the murder can actually take place. The story is paced well and everyone is invested in preventing a murder this time around.

If you haven't guessed from the names, this series is based on Jane Austen's novels. Revisiting old characters adds to the charm of the book and series, though of course, it is naturally difficult to completely capture the essences of someone else's characters, written a long time ago. That said, I did find that Claudia Gray brings across some of the characteristics we've come to know and expect, and I enjoyed seeing these caricatures again! We see quite a bit of drama as the mystery unfolds, and a deeper friendship between Jonathan and Juliet.

Claudia Gray's writing style, not quite Austen-like, does a great job in interlacing drama and mystery with humour. All in all, this series is recommended for fans of cross-over genres and if you're interested in seeing Jane Austen characters in an Agatha Christie setting.

The rating which is 3 1/2 stars is rounded up to an integer 4 as the book delivers what it promises.

[One star for the premise and the whole book; Half a star for the characters; One star for the story arc; Half a star for the writing; Half a star for the world-building - Three and a half stars on the whole.]

3.5 stars, rounded up for the enduring characters. I am enjoying this Austenesque “cozy mystery” series, but this third installment was a a bit of a disappointment, as compared to the earlier two. I believe that was due to more focus being put on the characters feelings, motivations and growth and less on the mystery itself, which made things drag quite a bit. Said mystery was all about Darcy’s mean old bag of an auntie, and Lady C. Is a real piece of work indeed, so there are many suspects for the young sleuths to investigate. Also, I think readers would really need to be up on their “P&P” to truly enjoy this, or the references and backstory would make zero sense. I do think there is still quite a bit of Austen left for future novels, but perhaps focusing on the Wentworth’s or Knightley's might be in order for the next installment.

This is the third in the Austenesque mystery series featuring Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney. Written in the style of Jane Austen, Jonathan is the son of Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy and his wife, the former Elizabeth Bennet. Juliet is the daughter of residents of Northanger Abbey. Challenging the mores of the time, they have worked together investigating and solving two prior murders. This time, they are called to the home of Jonathan’s great aunt, the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh, who has been the victim of two attempts on her life. As further attempts are made, the pair, somewhat stymied, work diligently to solve the mystery while shying away from what may be a budding romance between them. Other characters familiar to Austen readers play roles in the story.

This is a delightful book! I enjoy the young characters….both of them with their intelligence, unique charm, and Juliet’s willingness to accept Jonathan’s somewhat neurodivergent behaviors. The mystery is well plotted and kept me guessing. Gray remains true to the Austen writing style and employs a good sense of humor. I can’t remember the last book that made me laugh out loud a few times as this one did.

Although I did read and liked one of the prior novels in this series, this one works well as a standalone. They are so charming, though, I would suggest reading all three to thoroughly enjoy the characters. You do not have to be overly familiar (or remember!) Austen’s writings to appreciate these books for their plots and reflection of the society at that time. My advice is to read them slowly to savor the language and nuances.

I am looking forward to the next installment.

As I read this, I was reminded of Angela Thirkell's continuations of Trollope's Barsetshire, in succeeding generations. Thirkell diligently tried to match style and character as well as setting, carrying forward into succeeding generations. Her Barsetshire didn't quite jive with the Barsetshire that Trollope set up in my head, but they were pleasant reads.

Same here. Gray works hard to emulate the general style of early nineteenth century novels and for the most part succeeds, I think especially for readers who haven't been reading the Real McCoy for over fifty years. The errors are small, like calling pistols "guns" decades before the word for artillery came to include them. She's got a doubly tough job--to construct a mystery on top of carrying Austen's characters forward into their lives. I had to salute her diligence while feeling that this is not the Austen world as I'd picture it. Especially Charlotte Lucas. And I am very aware when Austen's characters are on the page minus Austen's wit.

But hey for alternate universes! The mystery is fun, Henry Tilney is probably my favorite character here, though the elder Darcy son comes second.

I love this series! I’m amazed at how well the author is able to capture these beloved Jane Austen characters so it easily feels like reading a continuation of the story. This is the third book in the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney mystery series and with each book, I find I love these characters more and more. As the title suggests, this time Jonathan Darcy & Juliet Tilney have been summoned by the illustrious Lady Catherine de Bourgh to figure out who has been attempting to murder her. Is it all in her imagination, or is someone really out to get her?

Mr. Jonathan Darcy is the son of Elizabeth & Fitzwilliam Darcy. His neurodivergent personaility is captured so well. He’s highly intelligent, but struggles in his interactions with others. Though he has feelings for his investigative partner in crime Juliet Tilney, it’s difficult for him to express those feelings. I loved how he tried so hard to make improvements in the ways he communicates especially with Juliet.

Juliet Tilney is an intelligent young woman who thrives in the investigations she and Jonathan have been plunged into. Though she harbors feelings for Jonathan, he seems not to regard her at all other than as a competent friend. As the investigation draws them together once again, their relationship grows as well. I love the way they work together and how Juliet is so excepting of Jonathan and all his idiosyncrasies.

I loved the mystery! It was so well done and reminiscent of an Agatha Christie whodunnit where all the suspects reside in one household. The main suspects include Lady Catherine’s daughter Anne, her husband Colonel Fitzwilliam, Mr. And Mrs. William Collins, and their two children, along with several others who all have reasons for murder. Mr. Darcy & Juliet’s father Henry Tilney are there as well to watch over their children. With each attempt on Lady Catherine’s life, the suspicions mount, and I found myself eagerly trying to puzzle out who the would be murderer was. I loved following each of the clues leading up to a nail-biting conclusion.

It’s a great mystery that captures all the feelings of a Jane Austen novel combined with Agatha Christie. Can’t wait for the next mystery Jonathan & Juliet are entangled in! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and vountarily provided.

A COZY AUSTEN-MYSTERY

While not an action-packed mystery, the cozy setting of this series will definitely appeal to Austen-fans such as myself.

What I liked

👍 Juliet and Jonathan: I have fallen head over heals in love with these two - the quiet, awkward son of Darcy and Elizabeth and the vivacious, upbeat daughter of Catherine and Mr. Tilney.

👍 Austen: Revisiting Austen is always a hit with me, I felt that Gray stayed true to the characters while still taking some liberties to make them her own. I especially felt that the relationship between Charlotte and Elizabeth (though a bit sad) felt realistic and plausible.

What I didn't like

👎 Clues: I am not usually a mystery fan, but wrap it up in some Austen and I will certainly be there. However, I did feel like this was a little drawn out because of the lack of clues. The solving of this mystery relied, I think, mainly in talking to suspects and witnesses. I would have liked more physical clues and deduction from these.

I loved the first book. It was unique in the way it told the tale of Darcy and Elizabeth's son, Jonathan, and an insightful young Miss Juliet Tilney and the murder they solve. The second book didn't grab me, but the plot was good. This one, well it just doesn't cut it. There was a lot of ponderous narrative and very little action till the end. It was just plain boring. I still enjoyed the characters, but they are young, and I want them to get together, and I know that is just not done in Regence times.

Imperious is the word for Lady Catherine de Bourgh. When she summons Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney to her home, Rosings Park, there is no saying "no" to her. Jonathan, because she is his great-aunt and Juliet because the woman has had attempts made on her life and Juliet is a compassionate person who will not stand by and see Lady Catherine meet her demise. And, Juliet wants to see Jonathan again.

It has been a year and Juliet is unsure how Jonathan feels about her. She would like him to court her, but that plan is meeting with opposition from both of their families. The fact that Darcy and Tilney take a near instant dislike to each other after accompanying their children to Rosings Park is a big problem.

There were a lot of suspects but no clear favorite for the baddie. But Jonathan and Juliet do what they do best, they interview and come up with the baddie in the end.

My thanks to the Publisher and Author for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

Jane Austen meets Tommy and Tuppence in this third historical cozy mystery set in the world of Jane Austen’s novels after all those earlier happily ever afters. Claudia Gray has established a brilliant and sparkling Regency world from the dialogue to the dress and no less dazzling clever murder mystery for her young sleuths to tackle.

The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh is the third installment in the series. Though each mystery is standalone, there is a progression of Jonathan Darcy and Juliet Tilney’s detecting and personal relationship.

The first book was set in the world of Emma and the second visited Sense & Sensibility. Each deliver something of a sequel ‘where they are now’ mixed with a fresh murder mystery. Now, the series shifts to the world of Pride & Prejudice. Jonathan and Juliet are autocratically summoned to Rosings to tackle the difficult task of keeping cantankerous and bossy Lady Catherine de Bourgh from getting killed. Everyone who has ever known the woman might be forgiven for wanting to take a potshot at her, but who among them all surpasses annoyance and irritation to hate her enough to kill her?
As the attempts grow gradually nearer to success and with the pressure of everyone’s secrets coming out whether part of the current case or not, Rosings Park and the local parsonage are a pot getting ready to boil over with Jonathan and Juliet in the middle.

I’ve always loved that Claudia Gray wrote Jonathan as being on the spectrum though there wasn’t a hint of seeing his behavior as anything more than weird or disturbing to the people back then. Juliet sometimes reads him wrong, but from nearly the beginning, she has liked and respected his differences and sees them as strengths. Together they are an oddity as upper class gentlemen and especially ladies didn’t enter into detecting murder.

In this latest, the pair are at cross purposes in their personal lives both thinking the other isn’t interested and meanwhile, their fathers only see class and personality differences so give them no encouragement, but as the case progresses, the pair begin to slowly work through their wrong assumptions. I love them together and was impatient to see an understanding come, but I can also appreciate that, under the circumstances of mystery work, societal rules, and family expectations that resolution can’t be swift.

Meanwhile, the mystery was one that had me and the amateur detection team stumped and pointing fingers at nearly everyone because between the Collineses at the parsonage, the Fitzwilliams at the main house, and some of the servants, there were a lot of secrets and suspicious behavior going on. But, through interviews and investigating evidence with meetings to share their observations and questions, they finally catch a break and the truth is there.

The pace is gentle and the tone is definitely on the cozy side, but I was thoroughly captivated and can’t wait for the next installment. Historical cozy mystery fans who like great attention to authentic dialogue, behavior, and setting should really give this series a go.

I rec'd an eARC via Netgalley and finished print via Berkley to read in exchange for an honest review.

I figured out the villain - and the motive - about 1/3 of the way through. But I enjoy watching Jonathan’s and Juliet’s relationship continue to grow, and it was a nice change of pace to have a victim who was still alive (and very much kicking.)

3.5🌟
Audiobook
To fully enjoy, readers should begin with book one. That said, I enjoyed this third book in the series, including the lack of another murder as happened in the first two books. The author does a good job of staying true to Austen’s characters while, due to the passage of time, showing how their lives have changed.

Another great book in this series! Claudia Gray does a great job developing the characters created by Jane Austen. I loved learning more about Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Anne in this one. I also loved seeing the two dads (Mr Darcy and Mr Tilney) interact. I did not guess whodunit in this book like I had in the previous one so that was a fun reveal at the end.
If you like cosy-ish mysteries or Jane Austen, you should definitely read this series!

Hey, Claudia Gray, when is book 4 coming out?? Please say "soon."

Actual Rating: 4.75 stars
Pub Date: 18 June 2024
Reading Format: physical book (preordered)

A historical mystery series that has never failed to entertain me is the Mr Darcy & Miss Tilney mysteries by Claudia Gray. As the name of the series suggests, Gray has taken well-loved (and some well-hated) characters from Jane Austen’s canon and placed them into intricate murder mystery plots. These crimes occur after the events in Jane Austen’s books. In fact, our sleuths are the offspring of romantic leads from Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey.

I recently finished the third installment, The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, as a buddy read with Julie (YouTube: @KeepCalmWithBooksAndCoffee). Spoiler: we both ADORE this series. I continue to love Juliet and Jonathan as our sleuthing duo. Their friendship and loyalty to one another has slowly progressed to romantic affection. It's especially lovely to see as both characters are outsiders in one way or another to Regency society: Juliet, due to her views on marriage and women's agency; and Jonathan, due to his often misunderstood neurodivergence. This third book featured brilliant cameos from the protagonists' parents as well!

I really enjoyed not only the mystery involving multiple attempts on Lady Catherine’s life but also the stylistic choices made by the author in homage to the Austen title to which it acts as a companion. Each book in this series mirrors the setting and themes of one classic work in the canon: The Murder of Mr Wickham is set in Emma’s Donwell Abbey; The Late Mrs Willoughby returns us to Sense and Sensibility’s Barton Cottage in Devonshire; and The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh takes our sleuths to Rosings Park as featured in Pride and Prejudice. I cannot recommend this series enough, and I do want to encourage that any who are interested begin with the first book to avoid spoilers!

Once again, Claudia Grey delights a hardcore Janeite with another installment in the charming Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney series. The Jane Austen pastiche category is crowded, but these books stand out with their sweetness, wit, and humor.

Once again, Jonathan Darcey and Juliet Tinley, children of the the couples from Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey, are paired up in an investigation. This time, they've been summoned by Lady Catherine de Bourgh to discover who is trying to kill her. Juliet is accompanied by her father, Henry, who is present for the first time in this series. Jonathan is with his parents. The Collins play a major role (Mr. Collins is as hilariously annoying as ever), as does Lady Catherine's daughter Anne and her husband. Seeing so many Pride and Prejudice characters together was delightful. Seeing the affable Henry dealing with the more reserved Darcy was entertaining, as well.

Jonathan and Juliet are dealing with some miscommunication resulting from the end of their last investigation and Jonanthan's attempts to hid his "unusual" behaviors. His neurodivergence has been obvious to modern readers throughout the series. It's wonderful to see Juliet miss those qualities when Jonathan tries to hide them. They are an incredibly sweet couple, though they aren't really a couple just yet (maybe in the next book?).

The writing is in the Austen style, though the pace is a touch faster than in the original novels. I recently finished Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, and Emma, so I was ready for this. I also reread the first two books in the series before reading this early edition. While it's not necessary, it definitely makes the relationship moments more enjoyable. I have a feeling I'll want to revisit the final version when it's available.

Electronic ARC provided by Edelweiss.

I have been waiting for this book ever since I finished the previous installment, and it did not disappoint. Claudia Gray continues to have a wonderful grasp on the Austen characters and I particularly love the way that she interprets their relationships as they grow older. I also love Jonathan and Juliet as protagonists and would gladly read an indefinite series about them solving mysteries together.

The Perils of Lady Catherine de Bourgh obviously takes place at Rosings. Lady Catherine has been the target of various assassination attempts and since she wants to keep things quiet, she summons her nephew Jonathan Darcy and his partner in crime Juliet Tilney (this book has probably the flimsiest excuse for the two teenagers being together, as it seems unlikely that Lady Catherine would actually command the presence of an unknown young lady, but we just have to accept this). This time though, the crime solving and personal relationships are complicated by a living (and very opinionated) victim, and by the presence of their fathers...who do not get along at all.

One of the highlights of this book is the glimpse into the futures of some of the Pride and Prejudice side characters. We spend significant time with Anne de Bourgh, Col. Fitzwilliam, and the entire Collins family. Claudia Gray has obviously thought carefully about where all of these people would be twenty years on, and how their relationships might have changed.

The only bad part about getting the books in this series as advance copies is that it means I now have that much longer to wait before I get to see what happens next.

The third book in the Jane Austen-verse mystery series featuring amateur gumshoes Jonathan Darcy (son of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam) and Juliet Tilney (daughter of Catherine and Henry), who are pulled together again to solve a string of murder attempts on one Lady Catherine de Bourgh.

This series continues to be fairly quaint and cozy, and that will delight most readers of this pastiche. Personally, I was hoping for more movement in this one, particularly regarding Jonathan and Juliet's relationship, this seems like one of those series where the author will keep them apart at least through books 5 or 6. The mystery here went in a way that felt barely credible, the story lacked a great deal of tension, and the playful banter or sharp-witted moments I was hoping for with Lady Catherine front and center didn't happen. For those thoroughly invested in this series, I wish you well — but it's time I part ways with it.

I received this book for free from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This affected neither my opinion of the book nor the content of my review.

The slow burn of the romance between Mr. Darcy and Miss Tilney has now reached epic snail trail. I lost the thread of the story in the laborious prose of 'will they or won't they' finally get together.

What started as a terrific series in the true tradition of Jane has devolved into a slogging read. For me, Ms. Gray has one more chance to move the relationship along before I cease reading this series.

The absolutely awful Lady Catherine de Bourgh contacts Jonathan Darcy, telling him to come post haste to Rosings Park. Lady Catherine, much as she objects to Jonathan, and to his investigations, needs someone to reveal whoever has been repeatedly threatening her life, with each incident escalating in violence.

Lady Catherine also says she is inviting Juliet Tilney, as word has spread within the family of the success both Juliet and Jonathan have had in their inquiries.

Darcy is concerned that Juliet is a fortune hunter so he is reluctant for Jonathan to get any closer to Juliet Tilney. Also, the things she has seen and done during their murder investigations could cast her in a terrible light, and harm Jonathan’s reputation and prospects, by association, something Darcy does not want for his already socially awkward and clearly neurodivergent son. (The inequality of the ridiculous higher standards that women are held to by Society!)

After a poor start, thanks to Jonathan’s inept phrasing of his concern for Juliet’s reputation before they begin their inquiries, the two begin questioning not just servants, but anyone who had been at Rosings from the start of the threats.

They soon discover that Mr. Fitzwilliam, who married Anne de Bourgh years earlier, and the odious Mr. Collins, are both concealing things for unknown reasons.

Jonathan persists in his warm feelings for Juliet, but decides, mistakenly, that she does not reciprocate. Juliet knows and likes Jonathan, and understands him better than most in their circle do, save his perceptive mother Elizabeth, and would like to take their friendship deeper, but all this is set to the side while they investigate, narrowing down the list of suspects, even while Lady Catherine badgers them to find the perpetrator yesterday.

There are more attempts on the irascible bully Lady Catherine, more secrets revealed, and a final, terrible incident before the detecting pair figure out who is responsible. The elimination of suspects is enjoyable and done with much politeness and care to never damage either of the pair’s reputations. Also, author Claudia Gray’s speculation on family make-up and dynamics, years after the end of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”, is well conceived.

Gray’s dialogue and characterization of classic characters is believable: Lady Catherine is quick to order everyone around and dismissive of those she considers below her, Charlotte continues to be sensible and practical, Mr. Collins remains a gigantic toadie, while Mr. Fitzwilliam is still easygoing, though his marriage and fatherhood have given him a seriousness and gravity, allowing him to appreciate Anne and determine what he wants for their lives together.

The new characters are equally interesting, with the Collins’ kids, though respectful of Lady Catherine, not interested in forever kowtowing to her.

Gray also complicates the whole Rosings situation with illness, jealousy, financial concerns, and the frustrations of marriage child rearing under Lady Catherine’s gimlet eye.

Amusingly, while the investigators, are working harmoniously together, their fathers rub each other the wrong way, with Darcy in full snobbish mode, and Henry Tilney finding much around him amusing, sometimes possibly deliberately.

Though we don’t get any resolution on the romantic part of the story, Juliet and Jonathan Have yet another success to their names, and I am eager to see which other Austen characters will need the services of the duo; I am totally loving this series, and hope Gray can write more cozies in this world.

This series is the best! I adored the first two, and this one was even better! My only issue is that I wish Jonathan and Juliet would hurry up and get together. Hopefully, they will in the next installment. I can't wait for that to happen!

I couldn't put this book down. Austen fans, mystery fans - pick this book up immediately. It was clever and witty and fast-paced. A little more interpersonal angst than I typically enjoy, but it wasn't overdone in a way that distracted or irritated.

You don't need to read the first 2 books, but the endings for both are revealed in the book. If you're interested, start from the beginning. You won't regret it.

Imagine a book almost exclusively featuring Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Mr. Collins. Now add in attempted murder and a witty writing style. In short, the result is perfectly ridiculous in the most delightful way.

I am a stickler when it comes to retellings and maintaining the integrity of the original, yet Claudia Gray continues to astound me. Her ability to embody Jane Austen so thoroughly that I forget that the book I'm reading wasn't written by Jane is incredible. She perfectly captured the essence of each of the original characters, aging them quite appropriately, and then dropped them into a murder mystery. Lady Catherine and Mr. Collins were particularly well represented, and there are so many lines that I highlighted because they were so perfectly ridiculous as only these two characters could be.

My one complaint is that even though this book was a mystery, the pacing felt much more in line with Austen's original works. I never really got wrapped up in figuring out who did it, or had a moment where I couldn't put it down.

Overall, it you want a dose Austen-esque wit and a cozy mystery, this is the perfect book.

When I received an email to read the third installment in the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney series, I could not contain my excitement. I put off reading this book because I wanted to savor each moment and not speed read through it. After the conclusion of The Late Mrs. Willoughby I could not wait to get back to this series and especially to see the relationship between Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney. This book did not disappoint!

The distinction of this book where a murder has not occured was so interesting to follow and to try and stay abreast of who the potential suspect(s) could be. The characterizations of other beloved characters from Jane Austen's books was also so igood I can see some people taking issue with how some characters aged with time, but I think Gray did such an interesting job with it. The addition of the father figures left for fun banter, although the prejudices coming up during the story had me wonder how our two protagonists would fare.

The friendship and budding romance is there and the slow burn development is so good, it hurts. I enjoyed following this mystery and cannot wait to see what comes next. Thank you Netgalley and Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor/Vintage for an eARC for an honest review!

The further sleuthings of mini Tilney and mini Darcy, or: who could possibly want Lady Catherine dead? (To no one's surprise, a lot of people)

I love how Gray captured not only Austen's characters, but also her style and tongue-in-cheek wit. Added bonus: we finally meet Papa Tilney and he is (as he should) such a delight! I loved his interactions with his daughter, and later Elizabeth Bennet. He's easily my favorite thing about this book (to no one's suprise ^^). His dislike of the Darcy's (who in turn disapprove of this sunshine in human form because he's not serious enough...) will be interesting if there ever develops more than a liking between the two sleuths. I can see both Catherine and Elizabeth sighing and meddling at that.

The mystery was a bit "meh" for me, possibly because I just didn't care who wanted the old dragon dead and why.

But still. Time and money well spent. It was just such fun!

I love how creative this cozy historical mystery series is with a reimagining of the Pride & Prejudice story and a new love interest between the children of Darcy & Elizabeth (Jonathan) and Juliet Tilney. This is the third book in the series that has the two leads trying to figure out who is trying to kill the estimable Catherine de Bourgh. This was an entertaining, quick read perfect for fans of Jane Austen and good on audio.
