Death reigns supreme as Darmés strikes at last, raising a horde of the undead and declaring himself emperor. Not only that, but his sinister army has dealt a devastating blow to the Eighth Legion. Felix and the Azure Knights, branded as rebels for refusing to bow to Darmés, make good their desperate escape with Emperor Ramza. With the imperial army in close pursuit, they turn to an unlikely source of aid. Over at Kier Fortress, the united forces of Fernest and Mekia remain locked in battle with Rosenmarie, even as undead horrors bear down upon them with Olivia nowhere near to come to their rescue. In the wake of her crushing defeat to Xenia, the death god granting Darmés his powers, her dearest wish came true—she was reunited with Z. But Z has returned for a to guide her through the final stage of her training. Only when that training is complete will Olivia have any hope of defeating Xenia and stopping Darmés. But by the time she gets back, who will remain for her to save?
As a lot of others have said, the side stories were way too many and about characters I don’t really care about. The 13 Free City leaders, for example, or those weird spirits that lust after Felix. I would have preferred the Book 6 cliffhanger had been dramatized in Book 7. I would have liked to see how the undead + continental war + civil strife + religious conflict all collided revolved around Ashton’s death and the impact on Olivia and Claudia. I would like it if Felix and Olivia had spent a longer adventure and if Claudia would have also been with Olivia when Z gave her additional training. Probably just extend these last 2 books into 4 or 5. I really liked that the story had the nads to kill off a main character, as it is a fun but grim story. I loved Olivia’s reaction to it, and I am really looking forward to part 2. I’m disappointed that it was Imperial soldiers who killed Ashton. I’d preferred it be Amelia or one of those holy dirt bags from the sorcerer country who wanted him dead anyway. Still, I liked the book and just have some small issues with it.
There is a lot of this book that is about characters that I don't care about. It jumps around SO much. I feel like I'm reading scenes in a soap opera. The Author tries to make you care and understand about all of these characters and I don't. Not even a little bit. The parts of the book that have the characters I do care about is nothing but tragedy.
For a series that started out so good I'm not sure I'll read the finale. Or anything by this author ever again.
The relevant parts are good with tear-jerker moments towards the end, but way too much attention is given to Sutherland and Mekia. It's a problem similar to volume 4
The story spends 90% of its time on everyone but Olivia, Claudia, or Ashton (for obvious reasons). The others are good supporting characters, but not whom I am interested in reading about.
