Erin McCabe Mysteries #4

Nothing but the Truth

Rate this book
In this propulsive and timely thriller about murder, prejudice, and corruption in the highest of places, Erin McCabe, transgender attorney of the Garden State, discovers that getting to the truth can be deadly . . .

New Jersey State Trooper Jon Mazer has been charged with killing Black investigative reporter Stewart Marshall in a racially charged, headline-making murder. The evidence against criminal defense attorney Erin McCabe’s new client is overwhelming. The gun used is Mazer’s off-duty weapon. Fingerprints and carpet fibers link Mazer to the crime. And Mazer was patrolling Marshall’s neighborhood shortly before the victim took three bullets to the chest. Mazer’s argument? He’s a gay officer being set up to take the fall in an even bigger story.

Mazer swears he was a secret source for Marshall’s exposé about the Lords of Discipline. The covert gang operating within the New Jersey State Police is notorious for enforcing their own code of harassing women, framing minorities, and out-powering any troopers who don’t play their rogue and racist games. With everyone from the governor to the county prosecutor on the wrong side of justice, Erin and her partner, Duane Swisher, are prepared to do anything to make sure Mazer doesn’t become another victim.

As Erin deals with an intensely personal issue at home, and faces an uphill battle to prove her client’s innocence, both she and Duane find themselves mired in a conspiracy of corruption deeper than they imagined—and far more dangerous than they feared.

I really enjoyed this book. Occasionally I felt like things were being left out or that we were missing some character development, but you are really drawn to the characters (both good and bad) so that can't really be the case. Perhaps they were sometimes more caricature than character? Not sure, but it felt 'off' in that regard.

That being said, I felt like it was a terrific, accurate trial procedural. And I enjoyed all the New Jersey references. It sure rang true.

But the best part of this book is Erin. I had never heard of this author until I read an article in the NYTimes this summer about books with really great main characters. They weren't kidding, she's terrific. She's incredibly bright and thoughtful, and amazingly in touch with her emotions. No one person can ever be asked to represent an entire community, but if I were trans I'd be proud to have Erin represent me.

I will seek out more in this series.

This is an incredibly timely, twisty and relevant legal mystery centering an earnest, whip smart transgender woman as a crusading criminal defense lawyer in the realistically corrupt world of suburban northern New Jersey. I like this series a lot. Love the plot and main characters, especially attorney Erin McCabe and her law partner and bestie Duane Swisher/Swish. But I find the writing noticeably uneven— the prose is often wooden and the recurring supporting characters that surround our heroine are sweet but two dimensional. That said, I’m all in for the duration. 3.5 stars rounded up.

As with all the books in this series, the intentions are great, and I admire and appreciate the author’s sensitivity and empathy for her characters (except the baddies, who are cartoonishly evil)…if only they were better written.

The overall story was good, but the author now spends 15% or more of the book setting up the background. I’ve read all the books so far, so it’s tedious and distracting.
This book presents another strong set of topics.
The legal and ethical aspects of parenting through surrogacy.
The persistence of racism and homophobia in some police departments.

Advanced reader's copy review

Another amazing book in the Erin McCabe series! This one opened so hard and fast with so much action I was immediately and happily dragged into the story. For starters, I continue to worship Erin as a main character. I love her so much and her arc in this story is absolutely amazing. She had great internal conflict between the continued effects of the events of the last book and her life choices in this book. And of course, I continue to love the side characters. Mark and Peg and Sean and Liz are all amazing! And Swish was the best! I loved getting to see him practicing law more. I think I am finally learning to appreciate the court scenes, and I actually really enjoyed all of those scenes. The way the court became like a giant game of chess that truly had me riveted. I did struggle a bit with Jon, who I didn’t feel Erin connected with as much as she did with her clients in the other books. But I still really liked him by the end of the story. Overall, I continue to love this series with my whole heart and highly recommend this installment!

Thank you Kensington for the free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Again, Gigl provides a twisty legal thriller, a compelling lead CH, and social issues using just enough detail with the legal strategy description and plotting for fans of Turow, Lescroart & Grisham in this 4th in a series about transgender criminal lawyer, Erin McCabe. The CHs from Erin to her family, partner (Swish), Mark, her fiance, clients, and enemies are rarely cookie-cut, and even when the stakes are high, Gigl uses humor and compassion to break the increasing tense Tone, never sacrificing reality for fantasy but emphasizing the positive. Reading the first three will make some of the this story arc make more sense but this can be read as a standalone with a satisfactory ending. Again, Northern NJ is a a solid backdrop, as is the court room itself. The ever-increasing suspense of the Tone due to the short-prefaced chapter making us wait for the reveal of who is in the hospital bed was foremost in my mind as a read it. Gigl excels at the details of police/legal procedures with very little over explaining. The author also gives Erin and Swish the skill set to both physically and legally win their cases and survive numerous attacks. The transgender issues are in the forefront with a gay NJ State Trooper accused of murder and with the issue of surrogacy for gay and transgendered people in this mix. She also includes themes of systemic corruption, racism and journalistic integrity. RED FLAGS: Vulgar language, and very uncomfortable hate speech, as well as visceral police & anti-LGBTQIA violence. I look forward to see where Erin and Swish are at in #6 as there are now interesting complications in their lives.

I really liked this book for a number of reasons -- let me spell them out. First, I was raised in New Jersey and liked the geographical references. Second, I used to practice law, and generally avoid stories about trial lawyers, because they are unrealistic. This book has the criminal defense work down almost perfectly. Of course, none of my clients tried to kill me. Third, and importantly, this book is a primer on how to become a parent if you are gay or trans. I learned a lot on this subject from this book. Negative, the heroine should just stop beating herself up so much. As a footnote, there is a wedding scene in this book run by a judge. My dad was a magistrate in the Jersey shore town where I grew up. His wedding ceremony was on two sets of 3 by 5 cards, one for single ring ceremonies (4 minutes) and one for double ring ceremonies (7 minutes.) He would have made a great officiant for this wedding.

4th in this newer series. First I want to say this time out I read up a bit more on Robyn Gigl and she is awesome. I am so glad she is writing books with a transgender protagonist. I do not read a lot of legal thrillers but I love learning more about the strategy of why lawyers do what they do. This case where a white NJ state trooper is accused of murder of a reporter has many layers. Corruption within the troopers and the issues that arise with the trooper being gay. At the same time Erin is getting married and wanting to start a family.

I was a quick read and I finished it in a day.
I was given a copy by NetGalley opinions are my own.

Oh man, I could not put down this latest instalment in the Erin McCabe mystery series. I think this is my favourite yet. Although the first three books involve trans victims or defendants, and focus more on systemic transphobia, this book focuses more on systemic racism, especially that of the police. Although Gigl's not exactly ACAB (she's a lawyer, writing a legal thriller, so I don't exactly expect that) the plot does importantly focus around systemic racism and organized white supremacy within policing, and the way that racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism and other types of oppression intersect. In this volume it was Swish's turn to be more centrally impacted as a Black man (though they are both under threat for being involved in a case that threatens murderous cops). The plot was so well constructed as they come across different clues and piece them together, and I totally didn't see the denouement coming.

Nothing But the Truth by Robyn Gigl
Erin McCabe Mysteries #4

Tough to read but great addition to the series

What I liked:
* Erin: attorney, transgender woman, intelligent, professional, good friend, true to self, takes on tough cases, in law partnership with longtime friend Swish, has more than the case to contend with in this book
* Mark: Erin’s fiancé then husband, schoolteacher, estranged from most of his family due to his relationship with Erin, loving, supportive, a good partner to Erin
* Being in on the beginning of the life Erin and Mark will be setting up as newlyweds and parents
* Duane Swisher: Erin’s law partner, ex-FBI, basketball skills, intelligent, family man, supportive, professional, protective, a good man
* Jon Mazer: State Trooper, accused of murder, strong, caring, estranged from his family, has the deck stacked against him, kept hoping all would work out for him in a positive manner
* Carol Roy: Deputy Attorney General, bright, capable, someone with a bright future, not thrilled with the person she is working with
* The family aspects of the story and how people in families react to LGBTQIA issues – both positively and negatively
* The plot, pacing, setting, writing and the way all the threads were tied up in the
* That I could thoroughly dislike the bad guys

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how evil some of the characters in this book, what they did, and the impact they had on others
* What happened to more than one innocent person in this story

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.

2.5 stars. Unfortunately, the most recent book in the Erin McCabe series (which I’ve loved so far) was not that enjoyable for me. It was way slower than the others, and the split between Erin’s personal life storyline and the “legal thriller” part were way off. As interesting as it was to get perspective on the process the families were going through, I don’t feel like it needed so much time. The back and forth between that and the case related stuff didn’t flow well either.

The book also ended up feeling extremely long because of this too I think. I honestly lost track of what was even going on with the Mazer case. Plus with everything going on with the police and those guys, there were so many moving pieces that did not come together well at the story was unfolding.

When the decision of the trial was finally issued, I was like “ok almost done!” But there were still like 5 more chapters, and a lot happened in those chapters. In my opinion, it didn’t seem necessary but I can see what the author was trying to do to create some contrast and stir reflection.

Anyway, I was looking forward to the fourth installment, and so I was disappointed that I didn’t enjoy this one. I only posted to the end because I did want to know how the case turned out. Once it got to the chapters about the trial itself, it got a little better. I have way more thoughts but writing a spoilered review would be a lot.

P.S. The author thanked so many people she consulted with on this one, but it doesn’t seem like she worked with anyone familiar with racial justice. That probably should’ve happened. I always wonder how race-based storylines like this will go, and this just…well there was too much going on lol. So if you’ve gotten this far in my review, heads up.

Criminal defence attorney Erin McCabe is with one of her most personally and professionally challenging cases to date. Defending a gay, white state trooper who stands accused of a killing and black investigative reporter. The very same reporter who has been helping him try to expose a covert gang operating within the New Jersey State police. A gang who are racist, prejudiced, corrupt, misogynistic, and homophobic to name a few of their 'charming' behaviours.

The story has everything and more that I've come to expect from Robyn's talented storytelling. With each new story building on seamlessly from the last.

It's a brilliantly edgy, compelling, powerful, emotional, and thought-provoking story. Robyn's research, passion, plot, characters, and pace are second to none. Giving her readers vivid insights into not only the way in which the law system works. But also providing a much needed and important voice to minority communities like LGBTQIA+. Particularly those minorities who face racism, prejudice, and bigotry. Eliciting a range of emotions from her readers. Keeping the challenges they face, widespread societal unschooled and ignorance that fuels the hatred at the forefront. Whilst keeping strong moral dilemmas at the heart of it.

I absolutely love Erin. Who is tough, competent, complex, loving, loyal, likeable, strong, empowering, and an extremely hardworking and tolerant person with a strong moral compass. Who really strives for justice in the right places. Her cast of supporting characters are equally as fabulous. All having their part to play in the storyline.

With murder, corruption, violence, brilliantly depicted courtroom drama, bribery, IVF, family issues and dynamics, love, friendship, forbidden love, domestic violence, and a building suspense and intensity. Ending in an edge of your seatsexplosive ending. This is my favourite instalment so far! Depsite this being a part of a series. It can be read as a standalone. Especially as Robyn includes little tidbits from previous novels, which really help fill the gaps and add to the storyline. Perfect for your tbr perfect for a unique tv series with a major television channel. I can't recommend Robyn's work highly enough! I definitely am going to be waiting impatiently for the next book!

Nothing But the Truth by Robyn Gigl
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In the fourth book (can be read as a stand alone) in the Erin McCabe series, Erin and Swisher find themselves being asked to defend a white, gay state trooper, Jon Mazer, accused of killing a black reporter. The evidence is stacked heavily against Jon. Jon says he was setup after starting an Internal Affairs investigation against a rogue group of cops called the Lords of Discipline.

This book!!! This entire series!!! I read all four books and they could be read as a stand alone but there is a great story line that does go from book to book if you go that route. I will say that Nothing But the Truth stands out as my favorite of the series. The tension of the situations and the courtroom scenes are amazing and just pull you in. The family storyline that is also in the book brings you right into their lives and makes you feel a part of the family. The characters that Robyn Gigl has created could be your family, friends and enemies and after reading this book, series, you’ll leave wanting more. I can only hope that there will be more in the Erin McCabe series.

If legal thrillers are your thing, this book is a total page-turner. Erin McCabe, a transgender attorney, takes on a high-stakes murder case that dives deep into police corruption, racism, and institutional cover-ups.

The story follows a New Jersey State Trooper accused of killing a Black investigative reporter, with evidence stacked against him. But nothing is as it seems. Erin and her partner Duane are fighting against a corrupt police gang called the Lords of Discipline, uncovering a conspiracy that goes way deeper than anyone expected.

Gigl's writing is sharp and immersive - she crafts scenes that feel incredibly real and keep you totally engaged. Erin is such a well-developed character that you can't help but get invested in her fight for justice. While there are a few moments where the character development feels slightly uneven, it doesn't detract from the overall gripping narrative.

This is definitely a recommended read for anyone who loves legal thrillers with complex characters and high-stakes drama. Gigl has a talent for bringing intense, real-world issues to life through her storytelling, and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from her.

Nothing but the Truth was my first book in the Erin McCabe series. I think you can read it as a stand alone, but there were times I wish I had started with the first book, which I am now going back and listening to.

This book was particularly timely, given what is happening to transgender people. I was rooting for Erin and her partner Swish as they tackle the corrupt world of suburban New Jersey, including the state police and the county prosecutor. The plot kept things moving and held my interest, but it wasn’t much of a mystery and was easy to figure out who was involved. I guess that is why it is classified as more of a legal thriller. The ending was a surprise and took a dark turn.

All-in-all, I enjoyed listening to the book. The narrator does a good job modulating her voice to play the different parts. It just wasn’t the most well written thriller and I think some of the personal issues and the various players involved in all the pregnancies took away from the plot and became confusing. A solid 3.5 stars.

This legal thriller series continues to impress- but know that this can be easily and happily be read as a standalone. Erin McCabe finds herself in an unusual position of defending Jon Mazer, a state trooper accused of killing a journalist- and all the evidence seems to indicate that he did. But is it in fact a set up by homophobes? She discovers a woven blanket of corruption and abuse of power-with interesting tentacles. I enjoy this for Erin, a unique and dynamic character in the genre and I was especially pleased to see her personal life playing such a large role in this latest installment. No spoilers from me but life changes are ahead. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read- eagerly awaiting more from Gigl.

I am a huge fan of this series featuring trans attorney Erin McCabe and her family, law partner Swish, and a rotating cast of friends and foes. I liked this installment because although the plot concerns a murdered reporter, there is little bloodshed or violence. There's still plenty of hatred, mostly of the racist/sexist/anti-LGBTQ+ type. The legal shenanigans are fascinating and well-presented. Erin's personal life evolves further in this novel and it's wonderful to watch her bloom. This entire series is excellent and would appeal to anyone who likes John Grisham-style novels. The writing has improved amazingly from the first book to this one, the fourth. Marguerite Gavin has been the audio narrator for the whole series and she does a fine job with the various voices.

There were three books I tried to read this afternoon and gave up on all three. One was after a couple of chapters, another was a couple of pages and the third .. it just had me scratching my head. So, it's not fair to rate them because I think all three were just either of a genre, a writing style or simply the story itself that is not for me. But I'm logging them here as a reminder to me to not try them again! But not as any warning to anyone else because again, I think I'm not the intended audience.

I wanted to like this book, but I just could not get into it. The style of writing didn't work for me and it felt like an awful lot of overexplaining in the beginning. That made it too difficult for me to get into. Just not for me.

More Erin McCabe please!! I’ve really been enjoying this series and while you could jump in here, I recommend reading them in order because you’ll enjoy seeing the characters develop over time.

The last book wasn’t as strong for me because I didn’t like the case but was still glad to keep up with Erin and Swish and everyone. This one felt really strong to me all around - loved the case and also the changes in Erin’s personal life. This felt like maybe it was wrapping things up as a series end but I hope we will get more!!

Gigl’s 4th offering in her Erin McCabe legal thriller series has the transgender attorney defending white state trooper Jon Mazure, who has been accused for murdering Black journalist Russell Marshall. Marshall was in the process of reporting on a story about widespread sexual harassment and racial discrimination with the ranks of New Jersey’s state police. Gigl—a transgender attorney herself—excels at writing about courtroom procedure.

Gigl also includes subplots relating to transgender issues: marriage to Mark despite backlash from relatives; the hurdles to starting a family; and other aspects of societal LGBT resistance.

Awesome first read of this author.

Erin is amazing. I learned a lot about transgender people and issues for LGBQT+ individuals.

The story was well written and had me going in circles as I’m one of those readers that try to figure out what happens next.

The book is a mystery, crime thriller, love story, courtroom drama, corruption in law enforcement, medical story, and most of all a family story of love and acceptance.

I highly recommend this book and I plan to read the other books!

4 stars for the timely topic and patient explanation of the transgender lives. 2 stars for the often cliched dialogue that was so distracting. 3 stars for the way I cared about the characters. 5 stars for the courtroom scenes - very well done. 2 stars for the sometimes preachy tone but 5 stars for all the effort to educate America about transgender lifes. 5 stars for giving us a cathartic but still nuanced outcome. If you’re looking for a legal thriller that unravels transgender lifes, this is your book!

I absolutely love this series and the latest book does not disappoint. Wonderful characters, great plot lines, excellent dialogue and fabulous court scenes. If I was to be ultra picky, I’d say I didn’t think the prologue was necessary — we could have still got to the same place in the novel without having that knowledge in advance. But that’s a minor quibble that does nothing to detract from an overall excellent book. If you like investigative and legal thrillers, then Gigl is an author you need to read.

It was fine! The writer's heart is definitely in the right place with this series. It can be a little didactic and a little wish-fulfillment-y for me, certainly, but I still enjoy the series. The main character being trans and the fact that she is a defense attorney both represent much-needed points of view that are rare in this genre which can be extremely limited in terms of the types of characters and the perspectives on the legal system depicted.

This one was quite different from the other books in the series - much less crime more procedural. Lots of time spent in the court room and a lot more details given about the laws and processes of the court (think Criminal Intent vs Law and Order)

I really enjoyed this one - probably more so than the others because the messages and morals were very clear and well explored. I hope there’s more to this series because I’ll definitely keep reading!

This is the 4th book in the Erin McCabe mystery series and I recommend starting with the 1st one, "By Way of Sorrow". These are legal thrillers featuring a trans woman lawyer, Erin, & her law partner, Duane (a black male). This case deals with racist & homophobic police and a gay officer framed for murder. The story also follows Erin in her personal life. I have really enjoyed all of these books, the mysteries are good and the various morality issues are covered well. 4/5 !

These books are interesting because the protagonist’s life feels like fantasy in many ways - her spouse is perfect, her business partner is perfect, she is beautiful, etc. But she’s a trans woman and, in this political era, who can begrudge this fantasy? In this sense, these books are escapist, but they are also legal thrillers filled with corrupt cops, lawyers, and politicians, and lots of courtroom drama.

Great characters in the lead, particularly Erin & Swish. Up-to-date storyline. Very readable courtroom scenes. An overall effective sense of tension throughout. While I agree with other reviewers about the flat characters--the bad guys that are nothing but bad--sometimes that's just the way it is, and the presence of the flats didn't undermine my enjoyment in the reading.

Wow! Fantastic Book

Love the series and the characters. Will miss them until the next book. Erin and Swish defend a state trooper of killing a reporter who was to reveal that there was a gang of troopers who prided on profiling and tormenting minority drivers. Some ugly realities in the book. Looking forward to many more in this series.
