A must read for anyone interested in the Metaverse and AR/VR platforms.
I have to say that this book positively surprised me. I started reading it without any real expectations except to learn a little about the hype over the Metaverse and try to see if it is only smoke and mirrors.
Well, here I am, finished completely with the book, absolutely amazed, with a Meta Quest 3 in my hands. Simply put, halfway through the book I was so impressed and fascinated that I decided to order a VR headset just to see it for myself and try to understand the authors' POVs.
The book not only covers the Metaverse but also the current progress of AI, implementation of LLMs in the metaverse, and a lot of practical and philosophical thoughts regarding the future of our society in an AI-powered world.
It is nice that the book was written by two different people and structured that way, every major point is talked from two perspectives, one author gives his optimist view, and the other a pessimist view, that comes really nice because you are getting a whole 360 view on a topic, both the pros and cons.
I do have to say that I did not really like Alvin's (in my opinion) too subjective opinions over China, and the lack of criticism towards, while not holding back any punches towards the USA, however I understand his reasoning.
What really opened my mind towards the future of metaverse is when the authors were discussing all the different ways AR/VR is helpful with education, from helping med students learn procedures to regular schooling and making it more interactive/interesting.
All in all, I have to say this was one of the better books I read in the last couple of years, and I would say the best read this year. Definitely recommended!

A technical and thought-provoking read on the subject of artificial intelligence and how it affects society and the world at large. The book is broken down into 13 parts with both Alvin and Louis giving their perspective on a specific aspect of artificial intelligence products. I definitely think this is the kind of book that requires an elementary knowledge on the topic at hand (fortunately the case for me, as it's an area I got interested in exploring during my masters degree) so it was nice to learn more as well as new peer reviewed studies I wasn't familiar with thanks to this book. I definitely think it's a book I will have to revisit again to truly take in all that I have read.

First of all, it is possible to note that the authors have done a good job and provided the readers with rather balanced material. The authors discuss the risks and issues, which can be encountered such as privacy, autonomy, and humanity. At the same time, they also reveal the brilliant possibilities of building an enchanting, an ‘overflowing with’ world if these technologies are properly directed. The book does not only throw a lot of ideas without putting into practice; it is practical.

And not just policy makers or big tech but ordinary people like us might make a difference in steering towards the utopian future by gaining awareness of what are the driving force behind.

As in the last few decades we have seen so many technological advancements, it’s not far fetched that AI will become a normal part of our lives in the coming years. It mostly blur the line between what is real and what is virtual. The authors of this book has over 3 decades of experience and has a balanced approach with data driven analysis. They mention how these advancements could lead to either an utopian age or a dystopian future. The risk of compromised privacy will increase is one of the major concerns. I highly recommend this book.

Yet the authors don't let us forget the sobering lessons from social media's trajectory. Two decades ago, platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube were heralded as technologies that would connect humanity, democratize information, amplify marginalized voices, and foster understanding across cultures and ideologies. The promise was intoxicating, and many of us in technology believed we were building tools for universal good.
The reality has proven far more complex and, in many ways, darker. Social media has indeed connected us, but it has also fragmented us into separate realities, each with its own curated information streams and algorithmic reinforcement. It has given voice to the marginalized, but also weaponized misinformation. It was supposed to bring society together; instead, it has often driven us into polarized camps where we inhabit fundamentally different understandings of shared events, eroded trust in institutions, damaged mental health—particularly among young people—and created echo chambers that reinforce rather than challenge our existing beliefs. The technology itself remains morally neutral, capable of tremendous good or harm depending on how it's deployed and governed. Graylin and Rosenberg examine these failures carefully and propose pathways to avoid repeating them with AR-AI systems.
This is where I believe both the authors' analysis and our broader conversation about AR-AI convergence need sharper focus. Perhaps the fundamental issue isn't the technology itself—neither social media platforms nor AR-AI systems are inherently malicious—but rather the financial structures and incentives that drive their development and deployment. Social media's problems stem largely from business models built on engagement maximization and attention harvesting, where algorithmic amplification of outrage and controversy drives advertising revenue. The technology became a vehicle for these incentives, optimized for metrics that prioritized profit over social cohesion or individual wellbeing.
My work on digital twins and wearable-based bridging of virtual and physical worlds makes this concern particularly acute. Our digital twins represent unprecedented intimacy—continuous data streams about our bodies, behaviors, states of health, emotional patterns, and physical locations. When these digital representations interface with AR-AI agents, the potential for both benefit and exploitation multiplies exponentially. Who owns these digital twins? Who profits from the insights they generate? Are they tools that empower us, or products that extract value from us?
As we stand on the threshold of ubiquitous AR-AI systems, we face a critical choice. Will we allow the same attention-economy incentives to shape how these technologies evolve? Will AR-AI agents be optimized to maximize engagement, to keep our eyes behind the lenses, to serve us content and experiences designed primarily to extract value rather than deliver genuine benefit? Will our digital twins—those intimate real-time parallels to our physical existence—become just another data product to be mined and monetized? Or can we, learning from the painful lessons of social media, establish different frameworks from the outset?
The challenge is formidable because the financial opportunities presented by AR-AI convergence are staggering. Every moment of our visual field becomes potential commercial real estate. Every interaction becomes data. Every AI recommendation becomes a transaction opportunity. But beyond the financial incentives lies an even more profound concern: will AR-AI systems bring us together in a shared reality, or will they accelerate our fragmentation into billions of personalized, algorithmic bubbles—each person literally seeing and experiencing a different augmented world? Without thoughtful regulation and alternative business models, we risk recreating social media's problems with even greater intimacy and immediacy—quite literally overlaid on our perception of reality itself.
This is not an argument for halting progress or rejecting these technologies. My work in medical AR, telepresence, digital twins, and wearable systems that bridge virtual and physical realities has shown me firsthand how transformative these tools can be. The surgeon guided by AI insights overlaid on their AR view, informed by the patient's digital twin, can achieve outcomes impossible just years ago. The patient monitoring their own digital twin through wearable sensors, empowered by AI agents that help them understand and optimize their health, gains agency over their own wellbeing.
