Threads of Grace

Rate this book
Grace’s beauty almost cost her everything. This new start is all she has left.

When Grace Beiler was only a girl, she was married off to an older Amish man in order to save her family’s farm. Years later, she finds herself newly widowed and a mother to a young son. She has finally fled her sad past and plans to settle into a quiet life in Pennsylvania.

As soon as she arrives, she captures the attention of Seth Wyse, the most eligible bachelor in Pine Creek. Seth is candid about his feelings for her, and for her son Abel, but Grace is determined to protect her heart. Her determination falters when her brother-in-law reveals the troubling contents of her late husband’s will.

Seth offers Grace his hand in marriage, and thus a means of escape. But despite his having saved her from another loveless marriage, Grace is slow to trust her new husband. And as the months wear on, Seth wonders if he has made a mistake. But God is quietly at work in their hearts, and Seth and Grace soon discover that threads of grace bind them together in a tapestry rich in hope and love.

I loved this book!!! I will say that I have read many Amish novels recently and this one truly touched my heart. Grace suffered abuse at the hands of the husband she was forced to marry to save her family's farm and she needed healing. God gave that healing to her through the love of Seth. I have also worked with many autistic young people as a teacher and Abel stole a place in my heart quickly as I read.
I love that this novel is focused on grace....God's grace. We all need grace in our lives and so many of us have suffered abuse at the hands of others and this book can bring healing to those readers as well. For quilting and painting lovers and enthusiasts, read and see how these two crafts are celebrated among the Amish. Will painting as an art be allowed for Seth and Abel? Grace would certainly say yes, wouldn't it?

Loved this book by Kelly Long. Grace experienced an awful marriage. Now a widow she and her autistic son have resettled in another community. When her past catches up with her she ends up married to Seth. He's an amazing hero and protects her when catastrophe threatens.

Kelly Long's characters have perseverance and hope "in spades," something that I love! I listened to this book on audio. There is an element in the story that I've never seen in Kelly Long's books and although it was somewhat distracting at times it did not diminish my appreciation for the overall story and characterization. Don't miss this story!

GENRE: AMISH ROMANCE
PUBLISHER: THOMAS NELSON
PUBLICATION DATE: FEBRUARY 12, 2013
RATING: 4 OUT OF 5 – VERY GOOD

PROS: Explores relevant issues, such as spousal abuse and autism; doesn’t sugar-coat the lives of Amish men and women; engaging secondary characters; well-handled marriage of convenience

CONS: Didn’t connect with Grace as much as prior characters in the series; would have liked more insight into Seth’s personality, besides his love of painting; storyline about Violet felt rushed and didn’t grab my attention

Seth Wyse has longed to court widow Grace Beiler ever since she arrived in their Pennsylvania community, but his imaginings of their life together are nothing like the reality. When Seth discovers that a clause in Grace’s husband’s will means that she may have to relinquish custody of her autistic son to her harsh brother-in-law, Seth knows he has to help her in any way he can. Grace isn’t so keen on marrying the young, charismatic Seth, but she’ll do anything to keep her son safe. But each of them brings secrets into their marriage of convenience; for Grace, this means the truth about her first marriage and her husband’s brutality, and for Seth, it is his forbidden love of painting. Grace is scared to let herself fall in love with Seth, and Seth knows he needs extra care when it comes approaching his new wife. Together, they must figure out how to forge a life together, and protect Grace’s son, Abel, from his uncle.

Having read the second Patch of Heaven novel back in March 2011, it was a long wait for Threads of Grace. I will start out by saying that I didn’t enjoy the third instalment in the series quite as much as the previous two. I’m not sure if this is just because I didn’t connect with Grace quite as well as Sarah and Lilly—the heroines of the previous two novels—or simply because my reading tastes have changed a little. Either way, Threads of Grace was still a very enjoyable read. It felt a bit shorter than Kelly’s previous novels, but in all honesty, this could just be because I gobbled it up in less than twenty-four hours.

One of the things I so admired about Kelly’s second novel, Lilly’s Wedding Quilt, was that it was one of the first Amish novels I’d come across that explored some rather edgy or taboo topics. Two years later, I’m pleased to see that more authors are delving into previous unexplored issues (teenage pregnancy in Beth Wiseman’s His Love Endures Forever and infidelity in Kathleen Fuller’s Faithful to Laura are two recent examples). But as with Lilly’s Wedding Quilt, I was pleased to see that Threads of Grace addressed some contemporary issues that are just as relevant to the Amish as they are to us Englishers, and without sounding preachy. Grace’s abusive marriage was dealt with incredibly sensitively, and I found her hesitance in her relationship with Seth rather realistic considering her past experience of marriage. Those who have autistic friends or relatives will be pleased with how Grace’s son, Abel, is depicted, and I know that the descriptions are realistic because Kelly has openly talked about being the mother to autistic children. One thing that I know I can rely on with Kelly’s writing is that she doesn’t sugar-coat the Amish lifestyle, and she depicts her Amish characters as men and women who struggle with very similar issues to those of other faiths and lifestyles.

What surprised me most about this novel was that it featured yet another marriage of convenience. As Kelly has shown in Lilly’s Wedding Quilt and her novella in the An Amish Love collection, she’s great at rendering realistic contemporary marriages of convenience, but I didn’t expect to come across two plots a similar vein in the same series. Despite this, I enjoyed reading about Grace and Seth’s gently blossoming love for each other. Although I didn’t connect with Grace as well as I did with Lilly, I appreciated being able to witness her slowly coming to trust Seth. The scenes in which Seth and Abel interacted were particularly heart-warming, but I did wish we’d had more insight into Seth’s struggles and flaws. Although the details about his love of painting and Grace’s dilemma over whether she should allow her husband to teach her son to paint were interesting, his love of painting seemed to be his only major flaw. He seemed just a bit too perfect, especially considering what we knew about his wild past.

My biggest gripe with this novel probably has to be the subplot about Grace’s younger sister, Violet. Violet follows Grace out to Pennsylvania when her parents die in an accident, and Seth’s family invites her to live with them. Initially Violet seemed to have a lot of potential, but something about her storyline just fell flat and didn’t resonate with me or grab my interest. At Seth and Grace’s wedding, Violet spots an attractive young Amish man and makes it her mission to make him fall in love with her. She spends the rest of the novel pursuing this young man and convincing him to court her. The storyline never really concludes, so I have to assume that it’ll be picked up again in the next novel, but all in all, it really felt like it was just filler for in between the sections about Seth and Grace. I wish I could say better things about this part of the novel, but I just never found it terribly interesting.

Although I felt that certain aspects of this novel could have been improved on to make Threads of Grace a more compelling read, it was still worth the two-year wait. Fans of realistic Amish fiction will be pleased at the way the novel explores the issues of spousal abuse and autism, and Grace and Seth’s sweet romance is sure to warm every romantic’s heart. I hope this is a series that Kelly plans to continue, and will be keeping my eye out for her next offering.

God's Grace!

I have read all of Kelly Long's Amish fiction books. Threads of Grace grabbed me from page one and held me captive until the very last page. I read this book in one day and I can honestly tell you that I usually don't read a book that fast. I literally could NOT put this book down.

Seth, Grace, Abel captured my heart. I wanted things to work out for them so bad. Little Abel was a precious little boy that touched the very core of my being.

The author shows how God can take impossible situations and make them possible. Trust, Faith, Hope, Forgiveness can be seen through out the pages of this book. BUT, the most important lesson to be learned here is God's Grace. Without it we have nothing.

I hope that there will be another book in this series. In my heart the story isn't finished; there is so much to tell yet.

This book is definitely more than a 5 star book. I wish I could give it a 10! I hope if you are reading this review that you will pick up a copy of Threads of Grace. I promise you will not be disappointed. Thank you Kelly Long for taking my heart through so many emotions.

I really enjoyed this Amish story. Could feel myself cringe at that young girl, Grace Raber, being forced into a marriage with a cruel man, Silas Beiler.
When the book opens her living hell is over, her evil husband has died. She has begun a new life in Pine Creek PA. She does now have a young son, Able, who is Autistic. While she is working in the garden, a stone wall falls on her, she sends Able to the neighbors for help. So begins the relationship of Grace and Seth.
One thing we see throughout the story is how Grace has been badly hurt, and her learning to accept love. You do see God working in all of their lives, and all they need to do is accept his Grace!
Loved Alice...we meet her again. Although she is English, you want her to stay and be part of the family. Then their is Violet Raber, Grace's younger sister. She sees what she wants and not going to be stopped.
You do feel while reading that their is evil lurking, is someone going to be hurt? Don't miss this great read, once you start you will not be able to put it down.

I received this book through Thomas Nelson's Booksneeze Blogger Program, and was not required to give a positive review.

Beautifully written. Kelly makes you feel like you’re in the room with her characters. This is the third and final book in the Patch of Heaven series. Totally a stand-alone book. But it was nice to read all three in order so you get to really know the characters. Not necessary, but nice. I’ve never been able to grasp the cruelty of parents with children and husbands with wives. How precious Grace is as she lived through her ordeal and horrible life married to her first husband, is just God’s provision. She learns many lessons from the hurt. Seth is so sassy. Book 2, gives the reader a lot of insight into Seth’s character. I loved the way he was humbled in this book. I love the closeness of the brothers, Seth and Jacob. I love little Able. I praise God that Seth and Grace did not think his autism a burden, punishment or mistake as some do. I love the way the Amish love their special people. Our church community in Pennsylvania is like that too. Christ’s love in action! I really like this author and am looking forward to reading more of her Amish romances.

Seth and Grace’s unlikely romance takes on several serious topics including physical and emotional abuse, poverty and autism with compelling storytelling, Christian faith and the promise of healing for Grace and her young son Abel. I enjoyed Seth’s sensitive and protective nature and the heartwarming and highly intuitive relationship he has with Abel. In the Amish culture Abel is considered a very special blessing from Gott but Seth understands him in a way that is heartwarming and inspiring. I had great empathy for Grace’s terror of the past and the danger that still haunts her because of her abusive husband and loved the way Seth comes to her rescue by proposing a marriage of convenience. Their story is challenging, emotionally engaging and very captivating.

Title: THREADS OF GRACE
Author: Kelly Long
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
February 2013
ISBN: 978-1595548726
Genre: Amish

THREADS OF GRACE is part of the Patch of Heaven series by Ms. Long, but it easily stands alone. For readers who want to read books in order though, Sarah’s Garden and Lilly’s Wedding Quilt are the first two in the series. I love Ms. Long’s contemporary Amish novels and novellas (not so much the historical one) and this one was no exception.

Grace is suffering from marital abuse. Her husband has passed, but he’s emotionally and physically abused her so much, she’s broken. Seth is infatuated with the beautiful widow, and when he discovers her continued danger from her former husband’s brother, he’s quick to jump in to help. Maybe without thinking things through clearly, but Seth is impulsive. Such an awesome man. I fell right in love with him.

Fans of Amish fiction won’t want to miss Ms. Long’s Patch of Heaven series, and particularly not THREADS OF GRACE. $15.99. 304 pages. 5 stars.

I have so far really enjoyed this series and was looking forward to this book and I was not disappointed. I was a little surprised to see that the story-line included another marriage before love idea but it was very enjoyable.

What I liked: This book was well written and enjoyable. I liked how the touchy subject of spousal abuse was handled. I have read quite a few books dealing with this idea and this one is one of the best I have read. It just felt real. Grace had to deal with the pain of her past as well as fear for her future and I was cheering her on wanting her to find true love and happiness. Her son was also a great character even with his issues he was fun to read about and how he interacted and helped the story play out made this book great. I also liked Seth and how he had his own insecurities and how both Grace and her son helped him just as much as he helped them.

What I did not like: As much as I liked the book I did have a few issues with how fast they got together and how Seth seemed kind of pushy to get the relationship to progress. The part about the Will and the requirements felt a little unbelievable which is why my rating was a little lower.

Over all this was a very enjoyable book and I felt it wrapped up the series nicely. I highly recommend that you go back and read the first and second book before reading this one. I would definitely add this series to your reading list!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

After her loveless marriage to an older man to save her family, Grace has trouble trusting Seth when he ask her to marry him. Can Grace really trust another man, and this time she has her young autistic son to be concerned about. Will Seth love her son as his very own?

Threads of Grace is a heartwarming story about Grace Beiler’s difficulties in trusting men, after a difficult marriage ends in the death of her much older husband. I enjoyed Grace’s story because even though she lives a plain life, there is nothing plain about the life she has lived so far. She faces difficult situations and decisions just like anyone does. I really like Grace, and my heart went out to her as she struggled to make decisions she need to make. Seth as a sweetheart, or so I thought! It was really special that he chose Grace, even though he could have had his pick of any other woman! And he was always there to support Grace and her son, giving her a life that she finally deserved! All of you Amish fans out there, you don’t want to miss this one!

NetGalley to read and review. I was not

This is an Amish Fiction book but a little different than most that I have read.
When you first start off you get a bad feeling in your stomach as what you are going to read you are not going to like and you don't but Kelly did a great job of skipping over those bad years and brings us to a place where love can flourish. Grace and her son move after her husband dies, and this is Graces story (and her sons). Grace decides to get married to save her son from his uncle. How does Grace and her husband get a long, how does a son with special needs fit in, Painting? I think there are too many unnecessary characters in this book. I enjoyed the book and recommend it, remember this is the second one in the series and although you don't have to read the first one first I would suggest you read it as well.

Threads of Grace***** by Kelly Long

Grace Raber married at a young age to an older Amish man, Silas Beiler, to save her family's farm. Now, years later, she is widowed with a very young autistic son, Abel and has moved from Ohio to Pennsylvania in hopes to start a new life. Her new neighbor, Seth Wyse is drawn to Grace and Able and hopes she will come to love him too. Unforeseen news from Grace's past comes knocking at her door and Seth offers to marry her to protect her and Abel. Can Grace trust her new husband, or will he be abusive like her first husband?

I loved this book. I love the way Seth gently loves Grace and Abel, giving them hope that there is healing after abuse. God's grace and love is woven within the story with a surprising outcome.

Threads of Grace, Book by: Kelly Long

Aug20

This is the story of Grace Raber, her son Abel (has autism) and Seth Wyse.
Grace is running from her past. Determined to make a life for herself
and her son. There seems to be an instant attraction between Grace and Seth
that they denie for the longest time.
Grace has a God given talent to create exquisite quilts that are like works
of art. Seth also has a hidden talent.
Someone from Grace’s past comes there to try and force her to go back with them.
Will Grace and Abel go back or with they stay and start their lives anew?
I so loved this book. I hope to see another book or two in this series.
Would love to see the story of Violet (Grace’s sister) and Luke King.
Maybe even Grace’s brothers also.
Keep up the wonderful writing Kelly Long!

This book is about learning to trust as well and love. This love story is made though hardships. Seth has fall in love with a girl named Grace and her son before she does. Grace need to learn to trust her new husband but before she can her brother in law comes to town.

Her brother in law Tobis is there to make trouble for her and her son Abel. Steph does wait patient for the right time to ask her. That came when Grace brother in law come to town. There some in her last husband will that she must do or she lose a everything.

I listened to the audio book this time around. It was nice to hear this story after so long. Still a book that I enjoy a lot. I wish the ending was a bit longer, with an epilogue to peek in on all the characters from the series maybe a year in the future. I also wish there was a book on Violet and Luke that comes after this one.

This is a sweet story told from many perspectives. The main characters are Grace and Seth, but the author often switches suddenly to five or six others. It's not a writing style I enjoy, but it did bring more attention to the secondary cast. The abuse Grace suffered from her first husband was heartbreaking, and she had quite a bit of healing to do. The villain of her brother-in-law was creepy and provided the impetus for her to marry Seth before she was ready. I felt unsatisfied that the will was such an issue and the bother-in-law had plans to work around it, but then the actions never came to fruition and the resolution of his plot line was tied up too neatly and quickly to seem realistic. I enjoyed Seth's personality the most, and how patient and encouraging he was with Grace. She had a whole new support system with her sister, friend Alice from her hometown, and new extended family members. Grace also spends time trying to befriend an angry young woman but I was confused when nothing really came of it. Grace's son Abel is autistic and it was interesting to see how he interacted with the community and they with him.

Beautiful Ending to Series

This is Book 3 in the series "A Patch of Heaven." I read the books in order and I think you should, too. The story was continued through the three books. It was great to follow the characters from beginning to end. The story was developed at a steady pace and didn't drag along. The characters were all described wonderfully so you felt like they were friends by the end of the series. I truly enjoyed these books and will look for others by this author.

For the most part I liked the story. I didn't like it as much as the first two. The ending felt flat. I was expecting more. It felt like parts of the story was missing. Violet didn't seem to have much purpose and was absent for most of the action. I liked Luke's character in "Sarah's Garden" but his role in Threads of Grace seemed out of place and lacking the development that's in book one.

Lovely!

Truly a beautiful story! Obviously, there's romance, but also quite a bit of redemption and well-written spiritual truths. A joy to read!
One downer is how the autistic boy was portrayed. I didn't think the depiction of his verbal ability and abstract thinking was terribly accurate, but certainly many aspects of that character were classically autistic.

Loved this book so much. So graceful, filled with challenges and love. Grace and Seth marry to help save her son Abel from his uncle Tobias. Challenges lead to true love being found and leads Tobias to find his own forgiveness in his heart. A story that filled my heart with so much joy. I truly enjoyed reading Threads of Grace!

Grace's past clouds her present and maybe her future. Seth has eyes only for Grace and her son Able. The past triggers the present and brings Seth and Grace together, but it's grace from the Lord that takes them into the future together. Great story, loved it all the way. Am hoping that this continues with the sister and Luke.

While I enjoyed this book, I don't think it was quite as strong as either of the previous two books in the series. That said, I liked how both Grace and Seth learned how to extend grace to each other and to the others in their life.
