i was sunk halfway into chemistry before suddenly remembering i had to post this review lmao. anyway.

i read bandit because well, who could resist a villain/superhero/cop combo? so now i’m hooked and suddenly i’m finishing sin 2 days later. oops.

while my bias will always be with bennett, london & sin are also a great couple. i don’t love second-chance romances, but the pace for this one was done surprisingly well. and here i think the characters are done better than bandit - cos sin is a strong character (to say the least) and ofc also a stupidly self-sacrificing like all mc’s. but we still love him. london’s personality is slightly less distinct, but he’s stupidly sweet and still in love with sin and cares for his team deeply and that’s all that matters. and the communication!! * applause *

the plot shocked me a bit cos i literally thought they were gonna catch the villain at like 6x% but plot development happened and i’m not complaining. the familial relationship plot twist was okay geh, feels a bit forced to make the team help lucas. bonus points for the found family <33

oh and the ‘i am trash man. rawr’ scene TOOK ME OUT i was laughing for like 2 mins help.

the third book is apparently jinx x lucas and though i have my doubts and might not read on, god knows i probably will.

"Smiling back, I made a vow to prove to him just how serious I was. London was mine, and I knew what it felt like to lose him. I wouldn't lose him again. Never again"

Sin by Brooke Matthews is the second book in this fabulous series around a group of superheroes and supervillians in a fantasy/dystopian type of world.

I adored book 1, Bandit (and whilst you don't need to read that first I would STRONGLY recommend that you do!) and was looking forward to learning more about Sin (Sinclair Gonzalez, superhero turned supervillian, but not) and London's story. It didn't disappoint!

There are some definite dark themes, so do check out the author's notes, but I can totally recommend Sin if you enjoy:

🖤MM fantasy romance
🖤friends-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers
🖤morally ambiguous characters
🖤second chances
🖤steamy times (but secondary to a strong plot line)
🖤hard won HEA

Be ready to feel every single painful thought and emotion Sin has ever endured that led him to all his past decisions the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful. Brooke so eloquently puts you in his mind, its mind blowing how well she handles all the pain. This book was the best representation of PTSD I have ever come across. It's handled that well. The first say 60% of this book is no lies painful, but you can feel the build up to something magical.
London understands in theory that Sin had been through a lot, yet doesn't really get it until he does, and all bets are off from there on out. These two men are so entangled togehter that neither is whole without the other. With time, they are able to heal and learn to trust each other.
Sin has to accept it wasn't his fault for the actions of his father, and he is allowed to be happy. With the joining of the Legion, he learns to heal and make friends and see he's not forgettable but loved.
Get ready for twists and turns that will make you smile and be gutted at the same time. It's so worth the read. Just be ready to feel a lot. All the emotions are worth it, even if they are a little painful.

“I tried to come home. I-I tried.”

That one quote fits about every character in this book and in my opinion fits the main theme.
It’s a story of people just trying their hardest to survive. To be. To hold on to the ones and things they love. To fight to make it back to where they belong. Deserve to belong.

I was really happy with how Sin turned out. The book opened with a note from the author saying this wasn’t going to be anything like Bandit, and that honestly made me a little worried. Bandit was five stars for me. It gave me all the feels. But I really had nothing to worry about. Sin delivered, it just delivered differently.

It starts on the darker side with us getting to see Sin in prison and how he’s being mistreated by both inmates and prison guards (which btw I would love to see something bad happen to a certain one 😠). This opening was perfect because it makes you feel for the protagonist and then when you’re introduced to the ‘antagonist’ and find out what happened to him, you immediately question who really is bad here. Maybe it’s all wrong.
I really enjoyed the unfolding of who Lucas was as a ‘villain’ and what made him who he is. I’m weak for soft villains who really just deserve to be loved.
I am VERY happy we’ll be seeing more of him in the next book.

Most importantly, I have to express how around 50% I was wondering if we’d get to see Bennett at all. He was mentioned a bit but no appearances until I was thinking this and bam 💥 he shows up in all his chaotic glory. I laughed so hard at the dino trash man. Rawr.
I was really glad for the humor mixed throughout this book. Never over the top. Just right. It helped build a strong connection from me to their little misfit group. Strong enough I teared up in the end when that group faced tragedy.

Really grateful this was available on GRR and I was able to start reading it a little earlier than release day 💙

Whew! I wasn't prepared for this book to tear me into emotional shreds. This second book in the Corrupt Me series was much darker than the previous one, as we watch Sin start off the story in prison a few years after his father's attack. He's paying the price for his father's crimes, physically and emotionally, as he's being beaten and attacked relentlessly in prison, by both guards and inmates. But he's also a prisoner to his own mind, constantly fighting his guilt for believing his father's lies and feeling like he failed his friends, his city, and most of all, the love of his life, London.
It's no surprise that he jumps at the opportunity to exchange his freedom for the chance to work with London's team to find the missing "weapon" that escaped from the attack. Sin wants a chance at redemption more than anything, and he wants another chance with London. But it's painful to see that he's a shell of his former self when he leaves prison. He's malnourished, depressed, has PTSD, and is lonely. It's a long road to recovery as he fights with London's team to finish their mission, and to maybe fight for London's heart.
I really enjoyed the darker themes explored in this second book, as well as the higher stakes with the team mission. It expanded on both the world-building and the continued character development from the first book. The team dynamics were fun, though I wish we had some more time to get to know some of the other members a bit more. And while the team's mission put the politics and ethics of the previous Super government in the spotlight, there wasn't really enough time spent exploring that, or how the new government planned to make changes, if any, moving forward. It makes it a little difficult to understand the stakes when we can't fully picture the landscape. That being said, the focus of the book is obviously Sin's growth and evolution as he rediscovers his inner strength after leaving prison. Sin's budding friendship with Mare was especially poignant because her abilities allowed her to help him face his demons and process them. There were definitely multiple moments when I was brought to tears reading, because Brooke Matthews very beautifully described the deep, gut-wrenching pain of grief, as well as the loneliness it can leave behind afterwards.
Looking forward to seeing what happens with Jinx next!

Book Review

Book: “Sin” by Brooke Matthews
Series: Book 2
Out Now!

I didn’t know why I was so surprised to find myself squatting naked inside a black, heavy duty garbage bag on the front porch of some random stranger’s home, but I was. Really, I should have expected something weird like this to happen because enjoying a normal Thursday evening at home was just too damn much to hope for. - Sin

To say I was excited to see an ARC of Brooke's next book up for grabs would be an UNDERSTATEMENT. I loved “Bandit” so much, and I couldn't wait to get Sin and London's story on my kindle. Thank you to GRR and Brooke for the opportunity to read and review early!

Sin starts out a few years after the events in Bandit. Sin has been in prison for his father's crimes, and London has been busy building his own task force and making a name for himself with the new government. Sin is released into London's supervision when his task force is entrusted to capture a dangerous psychic.

Of course, this wouldn't be a Brooke Matthews book without a lot of introspection, groveling, and genuine character growth. The way that both Sin and London come to realize the depth of their love for each other and how they're inevitable - it's a rough road, but they make that journey so well. Sin has to come to terms with his role in his father's prison breakout and subsequent massacre, and London doesn't know if he can survive Sin leaving *again*. This really is a book about second (and third, and fourth, and fifth….) chances in every way, wrapped up in hilarious banter and impossible situations. Ugh, the conversation Sin had with Sarah in the backyard had me crying.

Another thing I loved was seeing the chaos gremlin that Bennett can be. In “Bandit”, we were reading his point of view and I think some of his internal struggles lessened the chaos. It was great to see him instigating stuff with Charlie and Nick at his side.

If it hasn't been super obvious yet - I can't recommend this book enough. It's marketed as a standalone, but you *need* to read the first one in order to understand the worldbuilding, power system, relationships, etc.

Brooke - I can't wait to see what you come up with next <3

I have nothing and everything to say about this book.

Sin is the story of a man who has been imprisoned for his part in helping his father eventually commit genocide. Though he is not punished for his actual sins, but the sins of his father. Sinclair, who goes by Sin in the story, is given a deal by the president of their reformed government. Essentially if he can help a special OPs team capture a man who was made into a weapon by the old government he will earn his freedom. That’s means no more torture, no more loneliness, and an opportunity to get his love back. All he has to do is help take down probably the most powerful mind controller who everyone only thinks he may be strong enough to face. Think, based off his power two years ago. Not his power now, unused and untrained- held within his malnourished body and broken mind.

Sin has nobody. His family is gone and his friends have abandoned him in hell. He is all alone and it is eating him up inside. His only bright light is the man he loves and as long as he continues to lie to himself that the man might still love him back hope can remain alive.

Lo and behold Sins love, London, is actually the leader and of OPs team he is assigned to work with and at first… and second… and third glance it is clear London doesn’t want Sin around. London hurts, his father is gone and the only man he has ever loved has left him again. The walls around his heart are so high they may be impregnable.

It’s a race against time and a battle between what needs to be done and their abilities as super-powered people.

Sin is there to stop the killings and catch the bad guy as soon as he can- he can’t go back to prison.

London is torn between catching the killer before he hurts anyone else and delaying so Sin has to stay with him.

Nothing is as it seems though and the man they are chasing down is not only more than one step ahead of them, but quickly becoming unstable.

Is Sin strong enough to stop him?

When push comes to shove will he end up leaving London again- back to prison or something worse?

This book was amazing and though the concept was pretty different then Bandit, the book before this, it was just as good and something I would pick up again.

Happy reading.

Wow, this was such an emotional story, it’s quite different than book 1, Bandit. The author is able to set such a heartbreaking scene of Sin’s life in prison. His guilt is over helping his father is choking him, he’s targeted by guards and fellow prisoners, having his powers cuffed is a crushing loss, and he longing for London and what they lost.
It all feels so bleak and hopeless and you can’t help being drawn into Sin’s story, which was beautifully executed. He’s maybe the only one with sufficient powers to find Lucas, who is both a victim and a powerful weapon. The team he must work with to stop Lucas, the Legion puts him back with London. I loved the tension when London and Sin are reunited, they’re both have changed a lot since they were last together. There is a boatload of pain and suffering to get through and their mission is dangerous. I loved the hunt for Lucas, and that I couldn’t predict where the author would take the story. There is the feeling that nobody is safe in this world, which added tons of suspense. The romance between London and Sin is ultimately quite beautiful, I loved that they find some healing, forgiveness, and trust in their second chance. Looking forward to more from this world, this was excellent.

“Warm lips molded to mine, London’s tongue teasing and tasting along the seam of my mouth. I moaned into his mouth, granting his tongue entry. He delved inside, tongue sealing out mine. He tasted of margaritas, second chances, and tomorrows, and I f_cking devoured him.”

This book was beautiful! I cried a many a tear and felt like I physically felt Sin’s pain and thankfully also felt his joy and healing. If you read book one (and you had better read book one before book two!) I would say this was a little less steamy but made so much sense for the characters. This is a second chance romance for two people who have been through hell and back and needed to find each other again, begin their journey to forgiveness and healing. With that said they have hella chemistry from beginning to end.

You also get the opportunity to meet a whole new cast of characters (including the MC’s for the next book.) This book was heavy on found family and I was so here for it! Some unexpected friendships and also a hilarious cameo from our beloved trio from book one.

Stellar world building and all the f_cking feels; solid 5 stars from me.

I absolutely loved Bandit the first in this series but I did not expect to be drawn into such an emotive book you literally feel everything Sin has endured both the good and the bad! So much pain due to his PTSD that is so well written and sensitively covered by the author you endure the pain as you can feel that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. Following Sin as he learns to accept that he is not responsible for his fathers actions is such an emotional journey. When he joins the Legion he finds the found family that he really deserves who help him heal and feel loved. This also gives him his second chance with London that after so many twists and turns culminates in an exceptionally well deserved hea. Highly recommend.

Ok so I gotta say, I love this series and this universe. I didn't think it can get any better than Bandit but this one comes so close. This is a twisty and turny second chances with a whole hella ton of emotion, which going into this book I did not see the latter coming at all. These guys shew, they had me all up in those feels, they were pretty epic. The great thing that I've learned about this universe is that you'll be biting your nails or ready to cry one minute and BAM 🧨 literally laughing your A** off the next. I love it, this book and the previous are tons of fun to read and filled with so much heart. I would absolutely recommend this book.

Sin was a lot of fun, even if its undertones are pretty dark. I know Matthews says at the beginning that it doesn't have the same vibes as Bandit, and that's true, but both books do exist in the same undeniably grim world (at least when it comes to consequence), and I think that's a really fun thing to explore in the superhero space.

Sin himself is such an interesting character and I'm glad we mostly see him here. I enjoyed reading about his emotional growth as much as the (re)growing romance between him and London. All the side characters are amazing too, and I'm glad we got to see Bennett and his men all over again.

Plus, bonus points for this being a nice long book with plenty of plot - gives you some time to sink your teeth into it.

You should probably read book 1 first to know how everyone got to where they are. While I enjoyed that story, I REALLY enjoyed this one. There was a lot about this story that seemed a lot more cohesive than Bandit did. Sin's depression and PTSD - his guilt - were heartbreaking. Lucas' situation was similarly awful. London seemed like a very different person from who he appeared to be in Bandit, but his emotions were stark and realistic. I enjoyed the different characters in this story - they seemed a lot more fleshed out. Again, not everyone makes it out of this story in one piece, and the darkness underlying the romance in this book make it a better story.

This book had some very hard moments to get through. It was very good, but without giving too much away, at the end of the first book there are some big events that lead everyone to some intense trauma to deal with. The surhor does not pull punches and the world she has created is not an easy one to live in. Sin and London and honestly everyone on the team have issues to work though that do mot have simple solutions and it is very believable why they struggle to reach for each other even though they need that support and love. Watching them come back together in this second chances story was very satisfying.

Sin's story is very intense in all the ways. He has to win London over again in the midst of super stressful events. This book has some darker themes so caution is warranted if you are one that has triggers. The story definitely kept me turning pages and on the edge of my seat. My only complaint is that there were times when grammar mistakes would yank me out of the story. I received an early copy and these have hopefully been fixed with the final edits. It's an incredible story, and I would recommend it. I loved seeing the characters from the first book show up. I'm also very much looking forward to the next book in this world.

This is another great addition to the series, can be read as a standalone but to me it was definitely better to read in order, this is Sin and London’s story and is definitely different from Bandit but just as good and brings together a lot more characters and the importance of found family. This is a second chance romance story and started quite dark, then took me on an emotional rollercoaster of a journey with plenty of twists and turns and a few bumps along the road to get Sin and London their Hea. Really looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

It was difficult to resist the allure of a “second chance villain romance” and for the most part, this book delivers on the promise of its tropes. Sin is an interesting character, in ways both amazing and, occasionally, frustrating. It’s hard to ask for more than that, but there’s also strong chemistry between him and London, an interesting plot that involves more than enough action and intrigue, and ultimately you get a hard-to-put-down read. 4.5 stars.

I was really looking forward to Sin and Londons story even while reading Bandit. I love a good second chance romance and then add super villains to it and you have me hooked. I'm so glad these two got their HEA.

Amazing

I loved this book there were a lot of strong emotional moments I enjoyed Sin and London completely failing to stay away from each other for long I’m glad London showed concern and care even while he was trying to keep his distance. I enjoyed seeing Bennett again and his antics causing trouble. There were a few scary and action filled moments that helped piece the story together. I really enjoyed the last book and this one and I can’t wait for a next one to come out.

Huh

This book is very much EMOTIONS everywhere and everything. It’s so well written that you can feel how on edge the main characters are. There’s more plot than steam (but we eventually get to it.) There’s a lot going on and not all of it is clear right away. Definitely enjoyed reading this and I can’t wait to see what edge comes from this author in the series.

I loved the first book in this series, but this one is even better because of Sin. The author makes you care deeply about this villain and I was rooting for him all the way, to get his second chance, heal from all the physical and emotional damage done to him, succeed in his mission and get a life with London. A wonderful mix of a great plot, amazing characters and superb world building.

He has been sent to prison and is unable to escape or use his powers as the cuffs he wears stop them working. He will be offered a chance to find a mind control weapon. He will jump at the chance but it is not going to be easy as they will not want to lose it. What will he do? Can he get it before it is used? How will he get on? See how he gets on

Sin and London

At the end of the first book, I wondered how they would write Sins story from where he ended up. It was pretty darn creative how it was written. I am enjoying this series. This book was not as light as Bandit was, Sin had a bad time away from London. This story had a few surprises that I won't give away, but yeah it wasn't as happy as Bandit.

Damn, that was a tough one. Gutted about Lewis. It did kinda feel like at least one important person had to die. Book 1 was Mack and this one was Lewis, felt like a bit of a copy and paste. London was so different from Bandit's story and so was Sin. Here's hoping Jinx gets revenge for him. Have a feeling if not for the throat injury things would've gone the same way as Lucas . Pretty dark. I did like Sin and Mare's connection. Benny was a nice cameo to lighten things up. The mother's food still makes me cringe. Looking forward to the next one.

This book should be read after Bandit, but don't expect it to be the same. This book definitely has a lot darker material. However, the characters and storyline are still well-written and enjoyable (for the most part). Obviously, the darker side of the story isn't as much fun to read, but shows that this author isn't a one-trick pony who only writes happy characters who win the day. This HEA is a lot harder earned, but still just as rewarding to get to. Always nice to see cameos from previous characters, and I still love the insanity that is Bennet.

An amazing second book in the series! I enjoyed so much Sin and London story and how they got their second chance. More emotional and intense than book 1 I enjoyed a lot all the little turns and twists in the story and even the few angst and danger on it. Wonderful characters, captivating plot and an engaging Universe, I can't wait for what happens next in this amazing series! Loved it!

I loved going to back to this world. And I think I enjoyed this book even more than the first. I was really excited to get more of London in this book, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Sin’s character.

We got to see Sin evolve so much as a character. He began seeing himself as a villain with so much self-loathing, so to see his progression to personal forgiveness and healing was really beautiful.

I did wish there could have been a London POV because I feel like his side of the relationship (or lack there of) was really missing in this story. He clearly had a lot going on in his head throughout this book and it felt a bit incomplete that we weren’t able to see that.

The side characters in this series are absolutely fantastic. I loved the band of superhero misfits and how misunderstood they were by the world and how much unconditional love they had for each other. Also, the reappearance of our previous throuple was HILARIOUS and I loved that nothing about their cameo was serious.

Overall, this book was great and I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.

Honestly the depression and ptsd rep just hit HARD.
