This was one of those books that I read as a child in the 1980s and loved. It opened me up to alternate history and the 'what if...?' side of fantasy and SF, as well as (much later) books with slightly veiled mythological or historical contexts, such as the Kushiel series.

I don't know if I was just naive or dense, but I didn't notice that it was supposed to be religious until after I'd already read it a few times... :P Personally I think one of the things I enjoyed was that it was a good story, which happened to have religion in it, rather than a religious fiction that happened to have a story! It is definitely a children's book but still good, and I may read it again one of these days :)
