Rate this book
The Spud Compton novella trilogy collected in one action-packed box set!

Spud Compton is an ex-soldier running cargo across space, while also running from his past – most notably his well-known Senator father and his war-hero older brother. When Spud’s ex-girlfriend suddenly turns up in his life with an urgent job, he knows he should walk away. Money is tight, though, and he can’t afford to turn it down. Spud takes on the cargo run, but soon finds himself with both the mob and navy on his tail, all the while the biggest threat to his life sits inside the cargo hold of his ship, just waiting to be released.

Join Spud and the Benobi-451 crew as they are forced into a series of adventures across space, in this sci-fi horror with light-hearted moments.

I loved the characterisations, particularly Spud himself - an ex-soldier, desperately not wanting his past to be revealed, or comparisons made between Spud and his famous naval father and hero brother. He just wants to be as far away as possible from all things naval, left to fly through space with his crew and his cargo ship business. You can tell what type of guy Spud is by the loyalty of his crew, and their reactions to Spud's ex-girlfriend.

She's stunning, and knows it - a completely selfish user-type, and only out for what she can get - needs a large box delivered urgently, with instructions not to open the box. Even she doesn't know what it contains. Spud can't say no to paid work, and it would appear that he can't say no to the ex- either. Although the story starts off on a light foot, it gets serious VERY quickly and, of course, it's all to do with the secret contents of the box. The navy and the mob are soon on the horizon, and it can only go downhill from there. With so many twists and turns, it's like driving down that long zig-zaggy road in San Francisco!

After laying down a bit of background in book one, the action moves fast and furious, and held my attention fully. The pacing fits the storyline perfectly. Well-written, great world building and a strong believable cast.

The ending is fabulous (you'll see why when you get there), and I sincerely hope this is the start of a longer series as I've grown to know and love these characters. I'm desperate to know how the relationships started in these three novellas carry on. Successful or not so successful?

Three action-filled page turners in one omnibus edition that'll have you rooting for the good guys. An easy five stars.
