For some, magic is a myth. For others, it is a weapon.

What if witchcraft really existed? If our beliefs, superstitions, and legends were material? This is what Rhym, a young narcotics lieutenant, must question when she finds herself confronted with the impossible. While staking out a subway deal, a suspect magically kills his informant and drives the entire station into madness with just a handful of weed. Rhym miraculously escapes unscathed. She's unaware, but she is a witch, and that fact arouses the interest of a very particular unit of the French secret services. A group of special agents who, like the criminals they hunt, have mastered the art of sorcery…

Welcome to a world where it is better to wear an amulet than a bulletproof vest and where a simple curse by email can destroy you more surely than a bomb. Between thriller, espionage, and fantasy, Mathieu Gabella and DC Comics artist Fernando Dagnino (Suicide Squad, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Teen Titans, Justice League) present a powerful adventure!

"The Agent" is a a relatively creative urban fantasy espionage thriller set in Paris and its environs. The story follows a shadowy branch of French Intelligence that is engaged in suppressing magical based crime and terrorism but seems to have a fair amount of blood on its hands as well. As the story develops a Parisian detective is drawn into a series of strange and magical events and eventually recruited by the agency. This relatively typical plot device never quite pays off since not enough about the detective's special, and previously unknown, abilities is revealed. Additionally, the agency itself comes across as fairly sinister and the echoes of moral relativism and mediocre plot development resound throughout the book.

Expect a a tough but likeable main protagonist, an equally tough but not as likeable supporting protagonist, magical drugs, cloak and dagger everything, werewolves and lots of scenes in the Paris Metro.

This combination of spies and magic has been done before but I thought this was done well with great art. The story is a serious take on spies with a magic bent mixed in. I'll definitely read more if these guys decide to do more.

Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the digital copy of the book.

The Agent is an urban fantasy spy thriller that takes place in France. Intelligence organisations from all over the world are using paranormal agents and weapons without the general population knowing that any of this exists.

The main character is an apparently normal detective who realises that she has a special ability that is key to solving her latest case. While working on a case that is not as normal as she thinks at first, she is dragged into the whole world of paranormal threats and weapons.

The case is very mysterious and fast-paced, but it doesn't feel quite as important at the end as it should have been. The story ends, but has a very open feeling. I hope to see a second volume some day because this whole story is just her introduction to the paranormal taskforce, but nothing more. A full case that hooked me till the end, but still just an introduction to what it could become and I hope does eventually become a longer series.
