She'd let the wolf in her door. . .

As long as Alison could remember, there had never been trouble at Holbrook's Hideaway. The family resort on Lake Superior was her pride and joy. But the arrival of Stewart Dalton and his mysterious wife changed all that.

Before Alison knew it, she was knee-deep in danger and espionage. She had no choice but to help the couple, even though she didn't really trust them. And her growing attraction to Stewart made it hard to trust herself.

She felt trapped. But one thing was certain. Whatever happened, she had only herself to blame....

I shame-read Harlequins and then give them one-star reviews and it's not really fair. So here is an honest review: I skimmed this but it did a lot that I liked. The romance was cute and non-rapey, and all the conflict was external. I liked the use of the setting. The Great Lakes are pretty awesome! Not sure how many people want to scuba in Superior as it is cold AF but hey, spies gotta spy.

I... liked this? Somewhat ashamed of myself? I normally grab a handful of cheap paperbacks at the Salvation Army to read for the month, and this was included. I can count the number of times I've liked Harlequins on one hand, yet I continue to read them... I think I might need to include this one in that short list.

Granted, I did not like it for the romance. Dudes in tight white shorts and preppy sweaters hanging over their necks driving their mustang to a campground is not my particular idea of handsome. But the Madeline Island environment Laura Pender (pseudonym) has painted is so lush and enjoyable. It reminds me of my summers as a kid, grandma's cottage on the river. Or any John Candy vacation movie. Is this how rich people remember the Catskills?

The author described vacationers as chipmunks with their hoard of paperbacks tucked under their arms, ready to wile away the sun. The visual of the KGB diver sinking past them to the lake floor was eerily beautiful. The descriptions alone was worth the read. It really made me want to plan a travel destination (for the place, not the dead KGB).

This felt like the best unintentional travelguide. Still donating, but...
