Buona lettura!

What an amazing little story! Filled with mystery until the very end. Good writing style. Nothing in this book was unnecessary.

Jessica Leonardo's parents are Spanish Jews who converted to Catholicism in Venice to avoid trouble. Jessica is a devout Catholic with a strawberry birthmark on her face. To avoid being branded a witch during the inquisition, she always wears a mask in public and rarely leaves her home where she is a gifted masseuse/healer. Francis Bardolph is an English spy in Venice masquerading as a Lord (he's a bastard son of nobility). When they meet (to make his shoulder feel better) both are attracted. Francis woos Jessica as has never been done to her before, but his mistress (for political info) gets very jealous and turns Jessica in to the Inquisition. Sentenced to die, Francis gets her out of Venice to England where his paternity comes out and Jessica is accepted for her, not her birthmark.

Interesting settings, clean - medium story.

The 6th book of the Cavendish Chronicles. Excellent series!

When the Field of Cloth and Gold festivities went on so did many things happen behind the tent flaps. One young woman had given her husband his two heirs and now gave herself to as many nobles, and even Kings, as she pleased. Olivia Bardolph seemed to enjoy pregnancy as well and then would drop the babes off with her husband and return to her activities at Court. During Cloth and Gold she gave her favors often and too many. Among them were both Guy and Brandon Cavendish. They were both young and lusty.

When young Francis Bardolph was brought to Wolf Hall at the age of 7 they could already tell he was a Cavendish. Brandon took him under his wing as his squire and assumed also he was his son. Although unlike his daughter, Belle, he never outwardly proclaimed Francis nor did he carry the Cavendish name. At nine years old Francis traveled to the estate of Kat Fitzhugh, soon to be Brandon's bride. As Brandon placed Belle in front of him on his horse he set Brandon behind him. An enemy trying to keep Brandon from marrying Kat so that he could claim the estates shot at Brandon but the arrow went through Francis right shoulder.

This story begins with Francis acting the rogue in Italy as he worked as a spy for the English King. He was told of a healer and was attracted to Jessica Leonardo from the moment he seen her, anyways most of her, she wore a mask over her face and while working on him he had to wear a blindfold. He was told her face was disfigured.

Jessica could not believe the giant of a man who had come to her. She was sure he was part of the Council of Ten. Even though her parents still practiced their Jewish ways, which was outlawed, she had given herself over the Catholic ways. Because of her birthmark that proclaimed to all she had the stain of the devil she lived in fear.

Brandon had a mistress during the months he had been in Italy. Mostly to gather information as she was a courtesan who many well known men would also go to. She connected him to the people he needed. Once he seen the freshness and pureness of Jessica, he no longer wanted Donna Cosma's favors. He had already tired of her as she was trying to get him to commit to marriage.

Cosma assumed that Francis was a noble with much wealth, as he was undercover as a nobleman. Her jealousy over Jessica brought her to send a letter to the Council of Ten accusing Jessica of treason, witchcraft and whatever else she could think of.

Jobe, the African friend of Mark Hayward from Halloween Knight, was a big part of this book as well.

Another well written, entertaining and emotional book.

So far I have found that the heroine is 24 and the hero is about 29. I loved the book. I don't see how a birthmark was considered evil, but maybe they did back then. Francis was wonderful, loved him! Even Jessica was fresh once he got her out the house. Cosma was a atramp, and just plain mean. I am glad she got her's in the end. Well we assume she does, but what happens we do not know. I would like to know. Jobe, the African friend of Mark Hayward from Halloween Knight, was a big part of this book as well. He's always so mysterious and dark. And just badass, lol. I can't wait to read the books on Guy and Brandon. And I hope that Francis' mother is in those as well to see what really went on at the Field of Cloth of Gold.
