Memoir of Adoniram Judson: Being a Sketch of his Life and Missionary Labors
Adoniram Judson, a figure of intimidating success and legacy, receives a worthy telling of his story in this memoir by J. Clement. Clement describes Judson’s thirst for theological knowledge, his understanding and acceptance of salvation, and his journey into and on the mission field. It is detailed how he listened to the Holy Spirit’s call for him to heed the Great Commission and how, despite all legal and practical obstacles, he secured his way into the field as the first American foreign missionary. After inspiring the creation of America’s first Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and after struggling through the great pains of requesting aid and support from multiple countries, Judson then faced even greater challenges and dangers after arriving in the country of his calling. Clement uses extracts from Judson’s own writing to reveal the man, his love for Christ, and the unimaginable sacrifices he suffered for the unreached and lost souls of Burma.

"Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
and departing leave behind us
footprints in the sands of time.
"Footprints that perhaps another,
sailing over life's solemn main,
a forlorn and shipwrecked brother
seeing shall take heart again."
Woodsworth is describing what happens to many of us when we read biography. Reading this memoir on Judson was like following his footprints through the sands of time. The missionary exploits of the first American missionary was compelling, convicting, and captivating.
The harrowing account of being threatened with death by their captors should the British land their fleet the next day, the jailors brandishing large, sharp blades, waving them in the faces of Judson and his fellow prisoners...only to have them escape not only prison but death when their captors flee, with the joyous reunion with families, weeping tears of joy and relief.
Judson's encounters with the Burmese people at all levels of society, including not a few governing authorities.
Taking some seven years to learn and master the Burmese language so that he could translate from the original languages the Scriptures and, as I understand, leaving behind a translation which was in use un Burma until only recently.
The fact that at one point when some English speaking missionaries show up and Judson listens to them preach it had been over 30 years since he had heard a sermon in English...and we have entire catalogues of sermons from various preachers at our fingertips at any moment.
The deaths of two wives and several children on foreign soil. And his own health often in disrepair.
The suffering this man endured for the gospel is impressive. I was convicted several times at my own lack of suffering for the cause of Christ. At the same time, I was encouraged by this man of remarkable faith and perseverance for the Burmese people.

Loved it. But, honestly, I love just about anything about Adoniram Judson. In all fairness, I have to say that To the Golden Shore remains the gold standard for biographies about Judson, but this was still a good read.

Interesting biography, but at times tedious

Just incredible. Read anything you can get your hands on about the life of this blessed servant of Christ. What a faithful man!
