English version This collection focuses on two of H.P. Lovecraft's most famous short the novella "The Call of Cthulhu” and the unnerving tale "The Dunwich Horror.” In “The Call of Cthulhu”, a seminal work of cosmic horror, a young man pieces together his late uncle's strange collection of notes, artifacts and research, which point to the existence of a monstrous being waiting to emerge from its underwater slumber. As he delves deeper into his uncle's obsession with the legendary Cthulhu, he begins uncovering a terrifying global cult with sinister plans that threaten humanity. In the same vein, "The Dunwich Horror" is a tale set in the isolated, decaying village of Dunwich; the story follows the strange events surrounding the Whateley family, who have disturbing ties to an invisible, monstrous presence lurking among the remote hills and woods. When the mysterious and deformed Wilbur Whateley is born and rapidly grows to adulthood, the townspeople sense something sinister is at work. Rumours swirl about dark rituals deep in the woods and forbidden books with terrible secrets. As Wilbur's plans for his unseen brother come to light, no one suspects the true nature of the horror which threatens to break loose. This volume highlights Lovecraft's brilliant imagination and gift for crafting terrifying tales of the macabre; brought to new life in this updated translation to Spanish. Howard Phillips Lovecraft, of Providence, Rhode Island, was an American author of horror, fantasy and science fiction.
Lovecraft's major inspiration and invention was cosmic horror: life is incomprehensible to human minds and the universe is fundamentally alien. Those who genuinely reason, like his protagonists, gamble with sanity. Lovecraft has developed a cult following for his Cthulhu Mythos, a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a pantheon of human-nullifying entities, as well as the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works were deeply pessimistic and cynical, challenging the values of the Enlightenment, Romanticism and Christianity. Lovecraft's protagonists usually achieve the mirror-opposite of traditional gnosis and mysticism by momentarily glimpsing the horror of ultimate reality.
Although Lovecraft's readership was limited during his life, his reputation has grown over the decades. He is now commonly regarded as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th Century, exerting widespread and indirect influence, and frequently compared to Edgar Allan Poe.
