“You’re having twins!” Becca runs her hand over my huge pregnant belly. It sends shivers down my spine. There’s something off about her smile. And now she’s living in my home…
When my husband Seth and I bought our perfect home, all I wanted was a chance to start a loving family—the one thing I never had. And all our dreams come true when I get pregnant with twins. But we had no idea financial ruin was just around the corner. Desperate to keep our heads above water, we have no choice but to take in lodgers.
Becca, Jules and Zoe are dream roommates. So why do I feel so uneasy when Seth leaves me alone with them? Maybe it’s because I keep catching Becca and Jules in places they shouldn’t be. And Zoe says she knows my mother—the toxic woman whose influence I still feel every day.
Maybe I’m just imagining things. Perhaps I’m like my mother after all—paranoid and delusional. She’s too sick to look after herself without help. I need to pull it together. I can’t end up like her.
But when I start to see dark shadows moving behind my bedroom door at night, I can’t shake the sickening feeling that someone is watching me.
I start to eavesdrop on their conversations. And what I hear makes my blood run cold. They aren’t who they say they are. And I think I’ve put my unborn babies in deadly danger by inviting these strangers into my home…

I’ve been following the bizarre Roth family so I knew going into this one that their daughter’s life would, at some point, brush up against the craziness and provide some gobsmacking gasps. Lies featured heavily in book one, and I expected the same for book two. Kernan delivered. Sabrina Roth, Dr. Henry Roth’s wife, was the patient in The Nurse. Their heavily pregnant daughter, Taylor, is the main character in book two, hence the title.
Without giving too much away, know that the central theme is appearances can be deceiving.
The Parker’s problems may have escalated when they are forced into a situation where they are struggling to pay the mortgage on their new home. However, their problems began with Taylor and her upbringing by a manipulative mother and a milquetoast father whose lives were built on lies.
In a moment of genius (?), Taylor decides to rent out rooms in their new home to supplement their mortgage. Zoe Furr and Joules and Becca Currie move in … and life soon gets WEIRD.
I loved the cat-and-mouse shenanigans, not knowing what Sabrina was going to come up with next, and how far I’d have to stretch my level of plausibility/possibility to accept the directions the plot took. Yes, some of it may have been far-fetched and some of the characters should have been forced to wear their ‘big boy’ pants and ‘man up.’ BUT, it was entertaining.
With an ending like that, there’s going to be a third book. I’ll be there in line for it. Serve up the craziness, Jenna Kernan. I’m ready for it.
I was gifted this copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
The story gripped me from the beginning and kept me on the edge of my seat until the end. The story and characters kept me guessing all the time, the adrenaline was high while I was reading, especially near the end. I will look into Jenna Kernan's other books whenever I want a good "ride" in the story.
The first half of the book was so slow with nothing happening. But it picked up for the second part and it was filled with suspense. I was a bit disappointed with the ending, I wanted to know what happened with Taylor's parents. But well, overall it was a good read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.
This was a crazy, twisted story! I really loved it. This author definitely knows how to keep the reader on the edge of their seat . This story has so many twist and turns , There is no way to anticipate what's going to happen next. It definitely it keeps you reading on and on.
Taylor has been spoiled most her life. Taylor is married to Seth a medical student and they are expecting twins. Taylor has Seth and her dad wrapped around her finger but after her dad cuts off financial support things get interesting.
Taylor purchased a house without Seth knowing with her dad promising to help as the home is very expensive. After being cut off Taylor ends up renting the rooms to others…
Things start to get very interesting! Seth has been hiding his past with Taylor and this leads to very complicated scenarios. I don’t want to spoil this because it adds so much to the craziness of this novel, but in a good way. I am confused on the title in relation to the story, but hopefully someone can fill me in.
Thank you Bookouture. This novel is available January 9, 2024.
Taylor Parker has always had a toxic relationship with her parents but now that she’s married to medical student Seth and pregnant with twins she wants her’s to be a totally loving family for her it starts with the beautiful home her father just purchased for her or at least put down the down payment and promises to pay the house note until Seth finishes his residency and becomes a full-fledged doctor. Something Seth isn’t happy about but because he loves Taylor he tries to make it work. It isn’t until after they move in her mother calls and tells Taylor her father and she got in a horrible argument about him paying for her home and she will not allow that. Taylor is a month away from giving birth to twin boys with a humongous house note and hardly no income to pay for it this is why she comes up with the idea to let out rooms in her home. Again something Seth is not happy about but nose needs must and goes along with it. She immediately gets takers for her empty rooms one is a young couple named Julius and Rebecca in another girl is named Zoe. Taylor couldn’t be happier even when she start seeing strange things outside her window and feeling as if someone is following her she blows it off as paranoia but when Seth gets arrested for drug dealing and she wakes up with Rebecca standing over her things seem to just get weirder. Who are these people Taylor has allowed into her home? Unfortunately she starts to ask these questions way too late in the game. If you love books having to do with cults demented thinking and twisted logic you’re definitely going to love The Patient’s Daughter, The Roth Family Lies by Jenna Kernan. This is a multi genre author whose every book she writes I happen to love from her historical fiction mystery to crime mystery to these great thrillers it seems Jenna Kernan can do no wrong when it comes to spinning a yarn and this book is definitely a great testament to that. I have yet to read one of her books I didn’t love this one included. So if you’re looking for a twisty read you should definitely give this one a glance. This is one of those books where when they say it is a gripping thriller they are absolutely telling the truth. I want to thank Bookoucher and net Gali for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Taylor is expecting twins with her husband who is a new resident. Over lunch she tells him that she went behind his back and with her father's help bought a big house that they can't remotely afford without her father's money. Her husband tells her that he turned down the residency in Tampa, where the house is, in favor of Orlando. Then Taylor's father tells her he can no longer help with the payment so Taylor decides that rather than sell the house and get something affordable in Orlando, where her husband will be for FOUR years, she will rent out rooms in the house in order to make the payment. She ends up with a single tenant and a newlywed couple and weird things start happening as soon as they move in.
I hated Taylor probably more than any character in recent memory. The spoiled brat nonsense of buying this widely expensive house without telling her husband and refusing to move on from it when her father reneged was ridiculous. Deciding to raise the twins 2 hours from where her husband will be was ridiculous. Barely getting by once you get the rent payments from the tenants before you have added two babies to the mix, and still insisting on staying in the house was ridiculous. I could barely get over how much I hated her to actually read the story. Of course she had to make all of these stupid decisions for there to be a story, and ultimately she pulled her head out of her ass to some extent, but it was too late for me. This book was pretty boring for the first at least 50%, setting the stage for all of Taylor's stupidity and then getting to know the tenants, and then weird but not terribly interesting things happening. Then out of nowhere a twist gets thrown in and the action picks up, but I am not sure if I liked the direction it took. I like this author and I have mostly liked her books. This wasn't terrible, but definitely not her best. Regardless, I will read her next and hope I enjoy it more.
In The Patient’s Daughter we meet Taylor pregnant with twins and Seth her husband is training to be a doctor, she announces that she has bought a house without him knowing. She is then cut off by her parents and can no longer afford the mortgage payments, and decides to advertise for roommates to share the house with her. Three new housemates arrive, Jules and Becca a young married couple and Zoe a single woman. Things that are happening have Taylor questioning whether these people are actually who they claim to be. Are her unborn babies in danger?
The first half of the book was slow-paced, building things up slowly, and getting to know the characters, but then it switched into an intense whirlwind of a thriller. As the twists kept coming, I was on the edge of my seat. My emotions couldn’t keep up!
This is the first book I have read by Jenna Kernan; I will read more now she is on my radar. It was a brilliant read.
First, I want to thank Jenna Kernan, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
WOW!!! Jenna Kernan is starting off with her thrilling new book The Patient’s Daughter! If you follow my reviews you know I am a sucker for a good psychological thriller, medical read, and one that pulls on my heart strings. The Patient’s Daughter had all of that and more! It was a great read that should be put on your tbr list for this year!
Jenna quickly hooked me within the first paragraph of her prologue with the intense and suspenseful beginning that brought up so many questions that I needed answers for! Luckily, this was a fast paced read and was able to get the answers I was looking for.
The Patient’s Daughter was packed with family drama, heartbreaking news/events, wicked twists and turns, and unique situations to be put in that will have you glued to your Kindle.
This book didn’t really grip me at all and it’s taken me longer than normal to finish it, whilst picking up several other books to read at the same time. I just didn’t like the characters, they were dull and lacking and I really disliked Taylor. Selfish and childish and pig headed, she buys a house without talking to her husband about it, is constantly being reared on her fathers money and decides to stay in the house without her husband even after knowing she can’t afford it.
By this point I was bored with it and not really interested in the bizarre goings on in the house. I’ve read books by this author before and enjoyed them but this wasn’t for me. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in return for an honest review.
Wow! This was a shockingly wild thriller. I had so many theories on what was going to happen and was wondering which path this book would take and I couldn’t have been more wrong with any of my guesses. I never saw that mid book twist coming. My jaw hit the floor when it was revealed. I really liked how Taylor’s character evolved throughout the book. At first she seems like a spoiled selfish woman and is hard to like. Once you remember who her parents are, and as the book progresses, you start to like Taylor and she grows as a person. This is a wild page turner. Thank you to NetGalley and bookouture for my advanced copy.
Well this family is weird what great fodder for a pure escapism afternoon. It was brilliant I just loved it. Yes you have to suspend belief but wow what a ride. The ending was perfect just setting up for a sequel for this crazy family.
The key thing is the appearances can be deceptive. Yes I wanted to shake one of the characters and tell him to put his big pants on and deal with it.
I was given a copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
The vibe in this book is certainly mysterious…and highly strange. That prologue, though!! That’s how you draw in a reader, folks. I was hooked, wanting to know who was who in the very beginning. The pacing was good until about 60% or so, and then 💩 got *weird*, people. The big reveal happened earlier than I expected, and I was thinking it was obviously false, due to the sheer outlandishness thereof. But, no…it was actually true. Hijinks ensue for a little while, and then the ultimate wrap-up was so neat and tidy that I found it extremely unsatisfying. Come on! Also, little hints are dropped about a couple of other people being in the headlines (at the end), and it’s never explained or resolved, which was just irritating. I think I have to give this 3.5 stars, but I’ll round up for the prologue and the first half of the book, since I was entertained until the big twist.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Very interesting read that had me intrigued from the first page. I enjoyed trying to connect the dots. There were a few gaps at certain stages. An example was that I never figured out why her parents were on the news and what happened between them. Once I found out Becca was a teenager, her actions seemed a bit far-fetched. I liked the climax build up when she hid under the car. I was worried the house door she knocked on may have been the cult! I thought the police came too quickly. I would have liked a larger build-up as I felt it resolved too quickly.
This book started off extremely slow. It was repetitive, there were no new plot developments, and it was kind of boring. But about halfway through things picked up and it got pretty interesting and the pace picked up. The major twist ended up being really out there but I kind of liked that about it. It added some interest to this story. But there were some really unrealistic aspects to this story that I just could not get past. A dad is really going to offer to pay a mortgage on a million dollar house and then take it back as soon as he signs the paperwork? A community that lives strictly off the grid runs a podcast with 9,000 subscribers? You couldn’t deduce that someone going by Becca’s full name might be Rebekah? Some things were just really far fetched and it became distracting. Also there was a lot of talk about a huge newsworthy event happening to Taylor’s parents and we never even got to know what it was. Overall I was left disappointed with this book. I give this book 2.5 stars, rounded up.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest feedback!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Long, drawn-out first half with very little happening. The climax was bit of an anti-climax and the end was also too drawn-out. But the plot was moderately interesting, the characters were flawed but mildly likeable, and there was some suspense running through most of the second half. Decent read.
I can’t believe this book was written by the same author as The Nurse. The writing was absolutely awful. It felt more like a school assignment where the writer had to reach a word count with completely superfluous sentences. Also the writer seems to have a fixation on characters swimming naked in the swimming pool. I daren’t attempt a third book by this author!
Taylor and Seth Parker are trying to create the perfect family life. They are expecting twins, Seth is going to be a doctor and Taylor has found the perfect home. However, the perfect home is quite a bit more expensive than they can handle. Taylor comes up with the perfect idea - tenants. She rents out two rooms. One to a newlywed couple and the other to a single woman. It’s all so perfect…until it wasn’t.
Taylor becomes suspicious of her new tenants. With Seth away doing his residency rotation most of the time, everything is falling on her shoulders. When Seth is around, everything is great. She begins to wonder if she’s not letting her imagination run away with her.
She becomes more concerned when she hears conversations that could endanger her unborn children. Then, she hears noises late at night and sees strange people in their yard. Something is going on and she's terrified.
What a riveting, chilling tale. My heart was pounding as I read along with Taylor. From going through dark forests to scary attics to a heart stopping chase across Florida, there is never a dull moment. Taylor didn’t know the good guys from the bad guys. I didn’t either.
I didn’t realize this is a sequel to The Nurse by Jenna Kernan. I haven't read that one, but it didn’t ruin my reading this one. It’s a complete standalone book. I will go back to read The Nurse as I really enjoyed this author’s writing style. She has all the suspense and mystery techniques that I love in my thriller novels.
Taylor is a strong character. Without having much help from anyone, she fights for the lives of her twins as well as herself. I could easily see this playing out in the movie theaters. It’s a totally addicting, heart-stopping read. I enjoyed every minute of it.
FTC Disclosure: I voluntarily reviewed a free Advance Reader Copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed
Taylor has it all. The perfect husband, the wealthy parents who buy anything she desires and twin boys on the way. While at lunch, Taylor announces to Seth that her father has purchased a house for them. With them expecting the babies very soon, she wants Seth to be excited about the news but he isn’t. He decided to apply for a residency in another hospital, in another city. To add to the situation, Taylor gets a phone call from her dad stating that he will no longer be able to pay for the house. In an effort to keep the house, Taylor decides to find roommates. As soon as the roommates move in, things start happening and Taylor starts feeling paranoid.
What a wild ride this one was! It starts strong with an unidentified character POV and then we go back in time to the events that ultimately lead us back to the prologue. Taylor, which was the MC, wasn’t my favourite character that’s for sure, she’s spoiled and expects things to just fall in her lap. The decisions made by the characters added an element of frustration as you read. Jenna Kernan did a fantastic job at writing a novel with some nice twists and turns, ultimately delivering a plot twist that I had no idea would come. As much as the first part of the book was spent building characters and suspense, the second part was spent untangling this big twist and I was very invested. If you are looking for a book that will keep you guessing, this one should be on your list!
My rating: 3 out 5 --> An easy to read story with a great twist! BUT if you are pregnant or recently postpartum I WOULD NOT recommend.
Novel's Intention/obstacle: Taylor and her husband Seth are about to have twins. Taylor buys a house she thinks her dad will be paying for, but when he cuts her off, she needs to find a new way to keep the house so she lets 3 people move in and with that, trouble unfolds.
When did I get hooked? The prologue was really graphic and was an immediate hook. Even in the moments when I did not particularly like the protagonists, I still wanted to figure out what led to that prologue scene
What I liked THE TWIST!! It was completely unexpected, but retrospectively, the author has good breadcrumbs to lead you there.
What I didn't like I found the protagonist, Taylor, hard to relate to because she seems quite spoiled with her rich parents that pay for everything. Yes, she had a hard childhood with her mom, but that doesn't make the way she talks about money easier to read. I couldn't imagine someone saying it is more important to keep this house over being close to her husband right when they are about to have 2 children! It's also hard to believe anyone would willingly move into a house that is about to have 2 newborns unless they have alterior motives.
FINAL NOTE: I would NOT recommend this book if you are pregnant or recently postpartum. I recently had a son, and I needed to skip some of the scenes around the birth of the twins because it was too much for me.
For the second time we are invited by the Roth family.
In the first book (The Nurse) the author introduced us to Dr. and Mrs Roth and now we have to honor to meet their daughter Taylor and her husband Seth, counting the days until will become parents in a few days time.
As Hannibal from the A team likes to say that he loves it when a plan comes together, he is not the only one who likes that. Unfortunately though, more than once, plans don't come together at all and might result in a disaster.
Often people don't trust someone who is odd, but what is odd and what isn't? What one person may catalogue as being cuckoo, someone else might find that behaviour as the most common thing in the world. And maybe, we believe, without realising it, in the wrong ones, condemning the good ones...
You want something and someone promises to help you out. When they abandon you, you are determined to solve the problem by yourself. It won't be easy but you have a motto: where there is a will, there is a way and the way may be long and winding, but you will push through.
And believe me, willpower is something Taylor has in abundance and she will need every bit of it...
Mothers are like lionesses and you really do not want to cross swords with Taylor.
I loved this story and I would not mind at all if the author decided to write a third book in this series. Honestly, Seth, you should have done things differently. I hope you have learned your lesson. 5 stars
This book was definitely a slow burn, but when it picked up, it REALLY picked up.
Taylor and Seth are expecting twins, and she's decided to buy her dream house with her daddy's help. But when the money is taken away, she's not sure how they'll afford it. She decides she's not giving up the house and will rent out the other 2 bedrooms. One room is rented to a couple of Becca & Jules and the other to a single female Zoe. Zoe also happens to know Taylor's mother, whom she has a pretty toxic relationship with. They appear to be the best roommates, but Taylor starts to feel uneasy when Seth is not home. Which happens to be quite often since his residency is at a hospital 2 hours away. When Taylor starts hearing strange noises at night and finding Becca & Joules in places they're not supposed to be, she starts to get a little paranoid. Can she trust these people she just met? What secrets could they be hiding? Are her babies at risk?
This book started out really slow, so slow that I kept wondering if I was really reading a thriller. I kept waiting and waiting for something thrilling to happen. Then it did, and I was pretty shocked. There were surprising twists and some on the edge of the seat moments. I kept wondering how one could keep such secrets from their spouse. I wasn't the biggest fan of the main character and the fact she bought a house without talking to her husband first. Unfortunately, this book fell short for me, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend it. Someone else may love this book.
I was really pleased to see a second book in this series and as expected, Sabrina Roth is as manipulative as ever! Although Sabrina and Henry don't feature heavily in this book, their influence is very much evident in the behaviour of their daughter, Taylor, who is used to getting what she wants in life!
After Sabrina pulls rank and refuses financial support to Taylor, who is heavily pregnant with twins, Taylor and husband Seth have to take in lodgers in order to pay their mortgage and that's where it starts to get creepy.
Zoe, Becca and Jules are all a little bit odd and Taylor isn't sure what is real and what she is imagining - the manipulation and twists are very cleverly executed. When Seth drops a shocking revelation, Taylor and her babies are in serious danger and my goodness, it was TENSE! Towards the end, I was holding my breath and my heart was racing at a million miles per hour!
A bit of a cliffhanger at the end indicates another Roth Family drama might be on the cards - I do hope so!
4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Jenna Kernan and Bookouture, for an ARC in return for an honest review.
This is the second book in this series and moved on from Dr Henry Roth and his wife Sabrina to their daughter Taylor and her husband Seth, Sabrina is the controlling mother and refuses to support and help her daughter and son in law even though Taylor js pregnant with twins. Taylor’s father used his influence to help Seth train to be a doctor but money is tight for them. Her father had offered to pay their mortgage on a bigger house so Taylor went ahead and bought one. She soon realises that her father hasn’t put anything in writing so now with her mother deciding not to help them they find that they cannot afford the mortgage. Taylor decides that the only way to stay there is to take in lodgers and takes in a young married couple and a single woman. But she begins to have her doubts about them as strange things start to happen. Taylor begins to fear for her and her twins lives. This book had a very slow start but then the twists and turns began and I couldn’t put it down. Will there be a third book in the series? Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this early release! This story had me hooked from the beginning, I just kept turning pages to see what would happen next. Seth and Taylor are expecting twin boys and have just bought the house of Taylor's dreams to raise their little family in. After an unfortunate family event immediately following the home purchase, Taylor realizes they can not afford the mortgage, so she hatches a plan and takes in some boarders. That is when things get weird. For a bit through the middle of the story I was very confused as to where it could be going, I felt like there were a lot of players in the game. I can't elaborate too much on my thinking process there without spoilers. It was a page-turner for me in the beginning, but as we neared the end the pace really picked up and I found myself laying awake until I could finish! My first read by this author, but I can say that I would recommend her, and I would definitely pick up another of her books. Thanks again to NetGalley and Bookouture!
Thank you to @netgalley and @bookouture for this ARC of such a fabulous read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping, twisted, cultish story! Definitely 5 stars in my book! Such a fast-paced psychological thriller!
Taylor is married to med student, Seth. She is successful, spoiled by her parents and pregnant with twins. One day, Taylor surprises Seth with a huge house that she purchased with Daddy's help. Unfortunately, Daddy cuts them off right after closing! Scrambling for a solution to afford their gigantic mortgage payment, Taylor decides to rent out her extra rooms to strangers.
Zoe is a quirky and keeps to herself. Becca and Jules are newlyweds, new to the area, friendly and helpful. However, something seems off with all 3 of them. Taylor overhears a conversation between the newlyweds that at first thought, sounds ominous, but is Taylor just being sensitive and paranoid?
I don't want to give too much away, but many secrets are revealed, a cult unveiled, mysterious strangers spotted on the property and one hell of an ending!
The Patient's Daughter is book two in the Roth Family Lies series that is written by Jenna Kernan. I was drawn into this book immediately. Taylor and her husband Seth are preparing to welcome their first child. Taylor has been relying heavily on her families finances while Seth is in medical school. She has her father help her buy a house that they really cannot afford. She breaks the news to Seth over lunch - and is upset that his reaction is not positive.
Her relationship with her mother is complicated. Her mother has a history of mental instability and she demands that Henry cut off their daughter. Which devastates Taylor. So in order to keep their heads above water, they decide to rent out some of the rooms in her dream house. Once the roommates move in - Taylor starts to feel very paranoid. There were a lot of twists and turns and this book kept me on the edge of my seat.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own,
The Patient's Daughter held such promise; its premise hinted at something dark and disturbing, and it delivered. However, the twist in the story derailed and left me disappointed.
I was thoroughly engrossed in the first half of the book. The slow build-up to the reveal had me hooked. But then, it lost its momentum. The last two chapters were a struggle to get through, and I found the ending underwhelming.
My favorite aspect of the book was Taylor, the FMC's character development. It was a joy to witness her growth throughout the story.
As this is the second book in the Roth Family Lies series (I haven't read the first one), perhaps the connection between the title and the actual content of the book could be found in the previous installment. On its own, it's disjointed and unrelated.
When Taylor’s Mum and Dad decide she has to stand on her own two feet, it puts her in a vulnerable position.
Having just taken on a large house with her husband, Seth, who is training to be a doctor and their twins due to be born very soon, Taylor is panicking.
She decides to take in lodgers as she doesn’t want to lose the house. Has she done the right thing though? With germophobe, Zoe in one room and married couple, Becca and Jules in the other room, Taylor soon notices strange goings-on.
This story had my heart pounding, I had to keep putting the kindle down so I could calm down!
A cleverly woven tale that contained a lot and packed quite a punch. It was fast paced and had me hooked from the prologue.
A psychological thriller that was full of suspense and I loved it!
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
