The brand new novel from the #1 bestselling author, Maddie Please! The Old Ducks are back and they are naughtier than ever
“I've loved all of Maddie Please's books but this is my favourite so far - superb characters and a warm, wonderful story. Bravo!” Judy Leigh
Recently retired, Denny Lambert is finding life just a little bit…well, dull. So when her stepsister Juliette announces she’s getting married – again! – and invites Denny on a hen do with the Old Ducks, Denny really can’t say no.
Denny knows something about the Old Ducks and their wild exploits, but she’s just glad to be somewhere hot and sunny and away from her grey life back in the UK. She’s definitely not going to be pulled into any Old Duck mayhem….
But when they arrive at their beautiful Mallorcan villa, Denny is in for a shock. Because right next door is the man who once broke her heart – Bruno Browning. Now with the Old Ducks and an old flame to contend with, Denny’s life suddenly feels anything but dull!
But if she’s learnt one thing from her time with the Old Ducks it’s that life is for living…and that’s exactly what Denny is finally going to do!
Because it's never too late for even the newest Old Duck to learn new tricks...
Maddie Please was born in Dorset, brought up in Worcestershire and went to University in Cardiff.
After a career as a dentist Maddie now lives in Devon with her exceptionally handsome and supportive husband. They have 4 adult-ish children all of whom have left home and are probably rather surprised by all this. She did warn them.
Maddie is a voracious reader, and would enjoy hoovering, defrosting the fridge and cleaning the windows but unfortunately she doesn't really have time. She is very disciplined and sensible about her writing and she likes to write every day because it gets her out of doing the ironing.
EXCERPT: I looked around at everyone laughing and wished and wished it could be possible to bottle the feeling inside me. I was sitting with good friends in a beautiful little town. There was a view of the sea, the memory of a delicious meal, and perhaps a wider view of my future than I had considered when I came here. I would not allow myself to sit at home, just reading and eating chocolate as I had imagined. I might even be bold enough to go on holiday on my own. Nothing about this experience had been difficult, after all. How exciting! And there was still the rest of the holiday to enjoy, then Juliette's wedding. And of course Bruno, who was never far from my thoughts. What had that postcard said? Fear is temporary. Regret is forever.

MY THOUGHTS: The Old Ducks' Hen Do is an entertaining read, but I expect no less from Maddie Please. I loved the characters and felt like I was right there along with them on Juliette's hens' do. These ladies sure do know how to have fun without overstepping the mark - there are plenty of laugh out loud moments as well as some touching ones.
The romance is definitely a slow burn, once-bitten twice shy which only makes it all the more realistic. I could totally understand all of Denny's reservations and doubts.
The author makes the most of the beautiful setting of Mallorca and I have added this to the list of places I want to go.
Although this is #2 in a series, it is easily read as a stand-alone. I haven't read the first in the series but intend to remedy that immediately.
The Old Ducks' Hen Do is a quick and fun read. It's a reminder that while we may be wrinkled on the outside, inside we feel little different to what we did in our twenties. It's just that our bodies aren't quite as obliging as they used to be!
Some of my favorite lines: I think my life can be summed up in one sentence; 'Well, I didn't see that coming.'
For me, life began at sixty, up until that point it was all research.
When you are a kid you want to be a teenager. When you're a teenager you want to be an adult. When you're an adult you want to be a cat. (So true! 😂🤣)

If you enjoy books with humor and older/mature characters, then you will love Maddie Please's books. The Old Ducks' Hen Do is the second Old Ducks Club book, but can very easily be read as a standalone. Denny has recently retired and is bored. Her stepsister, Juliette announces she’s getting married and invites Denny to come along with the Old Ducks. Denny had heard about their exploits on their last trip and she can't say no, although she will not get carried away like they do. They have rented a Mallorcan villa, and it is beautiful. Imagine Denny's surprise when she finds out that one of the men in the villa next door is Bruno Browning, the man who broke her heart. Denny wants to enjoy herself and just maybe, she and Bruno can finally talk to put things behind them, or maybe rekindle a romance. Whatever happens, Denny realizes, with the help of the Old Ducks, she will live life to the fullest and have fun doing it.
This story is told from Denny's POV. When I retired I had a lot of the same feelings as Denny. Did I do the right thing? What am I going to do with my time? She was definitely relatable and I was hoping that things would work out for her in whichever pathway she wanted. Although the Old Ducks tried to keep her busy and not thinking about Bruno, they also supported her and made her think about what she wanted. We all need friends like that. With their antics, their observations and their interpretations of what was going on around them, they kept me smiling and laughing throughout. I will only say that there is an hilarious scene involving some skinny dipping and some nuns that had me spitting out my coffee. If you love books with more mature characters, if you are a mature character and need a reminder to live life to the fullest, or just enjoy a well written, humorous story, then I recommend you pick up The Old Ducks' Hen Do.
A sweetly wistful tale of aging, regrets, and second (or third, or even fourth) chances as we follow the Mallorca-based adventures of a group of British sixty-ish female friends, charmingly naming themselves “the Old Ducks”.
A Hen party in sunny Spain, to celebrate the new marriage of sixty-four year old Juliette, the fun-loving and uninhibited stepsister of Denny, our first person POV protagonist, could be the opportunity needed to recharge and redefine the recently retired, never married, ex government employee Denny’s “wasteland of empty weeks” now looming as her current life unfolds.
As Denny and her fellow Ducks discover the delights of their exotic vacation villa and the surrounding Spanish delights, a surprise beckons as a party of male bird watchers takes up camp in the villa next door. A surprise, and for Denny, perhaps an opportunity, to rekindle the flame with her long-ago University days ex-boyfriend - a love that ended without closure, or clarity, that has haunted her dreams for near-on forty years.
A lovely read, sensitive and thoughtful to the hopes and dreams that never age, and the possibilities, for each of us, at any stage of life, gracing every corner.
A great big thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.

This story was very entertaining read. The older main characters in the story were fun to get to know. And, all the mischief they get into! The setting is on the Spanish Island of Mallorca. The romance is slow burn which was a bit frustrating at times. I did enjoy the humorous aspect of the story. Overall, a nicely written story about friendships and being 60+ Old Ducks :) Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
First off, let me say that it was refreshing to see characters that were over 50 for a change. That in itself made it catch my attention, and then while reading there were loads of funny moments and lots of lovely, supportive bits that just made this a sweet tale about aging, regrets and second chances. A group of lifelong friends who lovingly call themselves “The Old Ducks” are gathering together in Mallorca for a hen party week to celebrate the upcoming marriage of one of their own, sixty-four year old Juliette, the stepsister of the main character, Denny. Denny has recently retired and is feeling a little bit lost as she’s never married or had children so she doesn’t know what to do with all her free time, so this trip comes at a good time for her. Soon they discover their neighbors at the next villa are a group of male birdwatchers, and surprisingly, one of them turns out to be Denny’s university boyfriend that ended without any closure, a thing that has haunted her ever since. Now Denny finally has a chance to figure out what happened with Bruno after all these years, and in doing so, realizes that the flame that once was is still burning. An enjoyable read from start to finish and a reminder that possibilities are endless no matter your age. Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.
Dennys Lambert is finding retirement dull, so when her stepsister announces she is getting married again, and wants her to join her friends the Old Ducks in Mallorca for a hen party, she is ready to go, The Old Ducks are a group of friends in their 60's living life to the fullest and Denny can learn a few things from them. When it turns out that her old college sweetheart is staying next door with a group of his friends, Dennis sent into a tizzy. Can she finally find out how things went so wrong years ago. Can life at 60 just be the beginning of a whole new adventure?
A refreshing read with characters in their 60s and what a rambunctious lot they are! I found genuine laugh out loud moments whilst reading about their antics. Denny attends her step sisters hen do in Mallorca and bumps in to her ex from 39 years earlier. Bruno was the love of her life until he went awol or did he? A great read with thanks to netgalley and boldwood books for my advance copy.
So much fun spending time with the Old Ducks. Staying in a Mallorcan villa soaking up the beautiful scenery and glorious sunshine enjoying life until Denny finds out a past love of hers is staying in the villa next door with friends. So the fun begins.
Denny is invited by her stepsister Juliette to her hen party in Mallorca, along with other members of the Old Ducks. Recently retired Denny decides to go along to what sounds like a lovely villa in a glorious location. Settling in they find that there is a stag party staying in the villa next door consisting of 60 something years old bird watchers - and Bruno, an old flame of Denney's who left her heartbroken at university all those years ago. It makes a nice change reading about people with a similar age to myself, highlighting that we aren't just the old fogies that we are expected to be. Although I haven't read the first book in the series, a common experience for me nowadays, this is easily read as a standalone book. The men are maybe a bit cartoonish, surely twitchers aren't all like this, but this just adds to the fun. There is a seriousness about how people can be lonely, but this is counterbalanced by TBR general light feel of the story. Definitely recommended. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
The Old Ducks Hen do is the second book in the old ducks series but it can easily be read as a standalone. Oh my goodness I loved this book so very much. Denny who is in her early sixties has recently retired and has just been invited to her stepsister Juliette’s hen party in Majorca. There’s absolutely nothing to stop her from going as she is now retired so the world is her oyster. Denny gets the surprise of her life when she arrives at the Majorcan villa they are staying in and who she sees leaves her positively dumbstruck for a while. The story mainly revolved around Denny but the other female characters we were first introduced to in the first book of the series but this book clearly explains who they all are. One of the things I Ioved about this book was the more mature lady element and it goes to show that women over a certain age can still have lots of fun and laughter. Packed full of humour but also there was a slightly serious side to this read in parts which made the book all the more poignant and interesting. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this book and I really hope there will be a third book in the series as I want to find out more about The Old Ducks.
This was such a fun book! I loved every single minute of it and laughed out loud a lot! The story was told from Denny’s point of view, who as the synopsis above says has recently retired and is a bit bored of her new life. However, things begin to change for her when her stepsister invites to Mallorca on her hen do. I really liked Denny. She was a real woman with doubts and fears, especially when she spots Bruno, her old boyfriend from university staying in the villa next door. All her feelings come back and she’s not sure what to do with herself, especially as it’s not all happy feelings! Fortunately the other ducks on the hen do are great fun and a great distraction from worrying about the Bruno situation. I loved all the women in this book they were such fun, making me laugh out loud as I read about their antics and hilarious observations about life. There are so many great moments in this book, including a wonderful scene involving nuns and skinny dipping at a local beach! Highly recommended if you enjoy romcoms and uplifting reads. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for my copy via the NetGalley app.
Denny is on a vacation for her stepsister Kim‘s Hen do with their friend Juliet and after listening to Juliet talk about her grandkids and her children and listening to her stepsister she relishing in her singleness right when a man in the suite next-door comes out onto the patio and Denny is shocked when he calls her name and she finds out it is her ex boyfriend from her college days. Bruno is the last person she ever expected to see it she certainly didn’t know how much running into him would change the rest of her life and her singleness. Maddie Please is one of those authors I found on net Galley and quickly got familiar with the rest of her catalog all of her books are written with middle age romance in mind and although some of her books have those from the younger generation they’re always focused on people my age which I love she never disappoints and is the author I can depend on for sweet fairytale romances where the prince and princess face real life issues. I love her books in The Old Ducks Hen Do is no exception it is a second chance romance and the author definitely knows how to build up the tension and have you palpitating for the emotions you know are coming. I highly recommend this book especially for those over 50 who still love romance. I want to thank Boldwood books and net galley for my free Ark copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Entertaining story of older women finding themselves all over again and embracing life. The British humor was fun, and the descriptions of food they ate while on holiday in Greece had my mouth watering.
Good friends, an old love and his buddies! Add a foreign country, a lot of sun, wine and you have a cute story with plenty of laughs. Am thoroughly enjoying Maddie Please’s romances.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the eARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the 2nd in a series, but reads well as a stand alone. I enjoyed this book, probably because I am older and can relate to some of the issues. A hen holiday that shows how important the support of good friends can be. Super relatable and fun. Pretty quick read. 4 stars Well worth a read, I would recommend.
I'm loving this series of brilliant books Giving life after sixty some different looks. This time it is Denny Lambert who is Mallorca bound Never expecting her first love there to be found.
Denny is joining her stepsister's hen party stay With the Old Ducks off together on holiday. Next door to their villa is a stag party, too, The first of whom is someone she once knew.
Get ready for adventures and romance As Denny considers giving Bruno a second chance. However, when they discuss their past Maybe the truth will be revealed at last.
A fun read, with surprises and so much more The kind of book I totally adore. Great characters, mischief, sunshine and romance I hope you'll also give this book more than a chance!
For my complementary copy, I say thank you, As I share with you this, my honest review.
As we go through life, it's common to have moments of reflection and wish that we had done things differently. This sentiment is beautifully captured in the story of Denise "Denny" Lambert, a recently retired sixty-year-old who embarks on a journey of self-contemplation with her fun-loving and spunky group of friends, the Old Ducks.
The story's setting takes us to beautiful Mallorca, where Denny accompanies her stepsister and the Old Ducks on a hen trip. The Old Ducks are a group of lively and adventurous mature women who refuse to let age dictate their lives. They are a delightful and hilarious bunch, always up for a good time, and Denny's friendship with them is heartwarming.
One of the things I appreciated about the story is how the author portrays the characters' age as just a number. It's a reminder that we can continue to explore, have fun, and enjoy life, regardless of our age. The Old Ducks' attitude towards life is contagious, and it's difficult not to be inspired by them.
The story takes an interesting turn when Denny reunites with the man who ghosted her thirty-nine years ago. Bruno is patient, kind, and understanding of Denny's anxieties and doubts. I loved how they took things slow, getting to know each other again, and reminiscing about old times. It's a beautiful portrayal of how love can be rekindled, even after decades apart.
The Old Ducks' antics are another highlight of the story. Their big yellow duck hats and no-holds-barred attitude towards drinking and having fun are sure to make you laugh out loud. The skinny dipping fiasco is a hilarious scene that will leave you in stitches.
Overall, the story is a heartwarming and inspiring read that will leave you feeling uplifted. It reminds us that it's never too late to pursue our dreams and that our age should never limit us. The characters are relatable, and their journey of positive self-discovery is one that we can all learn from.
In conclusion, if you're looking for a wonderful story about mature women and men living life to the fullest in a gorgeous setting, I highly recommend giving this book a try. It's a delightful and heartwarming read that will leave you feeling inspired to embrace life's adventures.
Thank you to Ms. Please for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
The Old Ducs Hen Do by Maddie Please The Old Ducks are back, and they are naughtier than ever. Recently retired, Denny Lambert is finding life just a little bit dull. So when her stepsister Juliette announces she's getting married – again! – and invites Denny on a hen do with the Old Ducks. Denny knows something about the Old Ducks and their wild exploits, but she's glad to be somewhere hot and sunny and away from her grey life back in the UK. She's absolutely not going to be drawn into any Old Duck mayhem. But when they arrive at their beautiful Mallorcan villa, Denny is in for a shock: for the man who once broke her heart – Bruno Browning, is next door! Now, with the Old Ducks and an old flame to face, Denny's life suddenly feels anything but dull! Because it's always possible for even the newest Old Duck to learn new tricks. Oh my goodness, 'I've enjoyed many of Maddie Please's books, but this series is by far my favourite, with its cast of memorable characters; its backdrop is the beautiful Spanish island of Mallorca. With sea, sunshine, wine, good food, lots of laughs and a touch of romance, this feel-good story brings a smile to your face. Although it is the follow-on story of The Old Ducks Club, it reads well as a stand-alone. Still, I suggest you read the previous book to get the real feel of these light-hearted, witty stories about how you are never too old to find love and happiness. Another smash hit by Maddie Please, I am happy to recommend it, and if you enjoy it, please look up her other stories; they are all well worth a read. I want to thank Publishers Boldwood Books, author Maddie Please and Rachel's Random Resources for a place on the tour and a copy to read and review.
I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My Opinion
I was disappointed to learn that this was the second book in the series as it means that I have missed a book release by Maddie Please, I am going to have to go back and read it. With older characters this was a very entertaining read, that can be read as a standalone. I read the majority of this in one sitting as it was enjoyable from start to finish.
Whilst Maddie has written about older characters there are still a lot of antics to read about. A highly recommended read from me, although I would suggest reading this series in the correct order.
A wonderful tonic of a read with lots of smiles! Denny has been invited to a hen do- a few days away in Spain with her sister and a couple of friends known as the Old Ducks. All are ladies in their prime and have been around the block a few times. Denny has remained single and is now happily retired, or at least she thinks she is. She realises she needs something more in life than just doing as she pleases getting up late. There’s a focus or hobby or activity missing as she wants to make the most of her life and there is no time like the present. On arrival, she hears a voice from the next door villa she recognises from almost forty years ago- a man she went out with. What are the chances? He broke her heart as he didn't stay in touch, despite Denny writing. No, she really can't fancy him now can she? Life is for living, but does that include a man in her life after all these years? This is one of those reads where you can't help but smile. There’s a wonderful light heartedness about it and a sense of fun and even mischief. Maybe a book for those of us who have also been around the block a few times and also been through the wringer on the way. It’s a look at life through mature eyes and making the most of life and taking every opportunity. Of life's ups and downs and perhaps putting the past where it belongs- behind us with only a glance to it now and again. We’ve learnt from life and now’s the time to put our best foot forward and enjoy what we have with fun and laughter and putting our big girl pants on perhaps! An uplifting thoroughly entertaining read I so loved.

I thoroughly enjoyed the last book I read by Maddie Please, Sunrise With The Silver Surfers . I love how she concentrates on writing contemporary fiction and romance with older main characters. It’s important to not forget a segment of a population that’s very much alive!
If you’re an American and wondering what a Hen Do is, it’s a Bachelorette Party, or in this case, a Bachelorette vacation. Imagine being recently retired, your older stepsister is getting married, and you head off for a vaca, only to run into the man who broke your heart at university. That’s just what happens to Denny, who never married and always wondered what happened between her and Bruno because the relationship ended abruptly.
There’s no way to avoid the ex, as he and his stag party are staying at the villa next door. The groups end up mingling together a few times, and slowly, slowly, Denny and Bruno open up to each other about their lives after they parted ways. Neither one has been lucky in love, and as much as Denny is still attracted to Bruno, she’s full of fears that she somehow doesn’t deserve a happy ending. You can almost feel all her doubts jumping off the page.
While this book is the second in a series about Old Ducks, I did not feel as if I missed anything by not reading the first book in the series. I loved most of the ducks, and especially enjoyed the humor drawn throughout the book. I’ll definitely be checking out this series again!
I received a copy of the ebook from NetGalley and Boldwood Books; I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I first discovered this author when I read The Old Ducks Club back in May 2021. The characters that appeared in that first book, are all present and correct in this one, with the lovely addition of Juliette’s sister, Denny. The story is told mainly from Denny’s perspective as she navigates her new world of retirement and feeling surplus to requirement. Despite being determined to avoid any of the high jinx that she heard from the Old Duck’s last trip, Denny soon finds herself being pulled into a series of funny happenings. What she couldn’t have factored into her adventures, was seeing an old flame, Bruno, and she soon realises that she is still carrying a spark for him. I absolutely loved this story and found myself continually rooting for Denny and Bruno to catch a break. I guess I really am an old romantic, as I was continually hopeful that they would have the chance for a happy ever after. Of course, restarting a romance, forty years after it fizzled out, is no mean feat, and Maddie Please makes her characters work for their happiness. Whilst the main focus of the story was on Denny and Bruno, there was a terrific supporting cast formed by the Old Ducks and their Stag party celebrating neighbours, who were also enjoying their later years. As I have now come to expect, there are plenty of hilarious moments along with some lovely wistful pauses as the friends reflect on their friendships and what the future may hold for them. While this story is a wonderful work of fiction, Denny is not much older than me, so it was good to know that I can get into trouble and still look forward to a happy ending. However, I don’t fancy skinny dipping!
I have now read several of Maddie Please’s books featuring “older women” in their 60’s to early 70’s and have enjoyed them all. This one is in many ways a sequel to The Old Ducks Club and includes a number of the same characters in the earlier book—Juliette, Sophia, Anita and Kim—but also features a new one, Denny (Denise) Lambert, recently retired and a bit bored. Denny’s step-sister Juliette calls to tell her she has gotten engaged and invites Denny to join a ten-day ”hen holiday” in Mallorca. The ladies are a fun-loving group determined to continue to live an enjoyable life and soon sweep Denny into their adventures. In Mallorca, The villa next door turns out to be occupied by dedicated male bird-watchers, one unhappily married, one engaged, and one, Bruno, who was Denny’s university boyfriend of long ago. Though not a bird-watcher, he joins his friends on their holiday as he lives not far away.. The “hens” get into adventures, big and small, awkward and not and gradually give Denny a sense of needed female friendship. There is romance aplenty for these ladies “of a certain age” who are determined to live life to the fullest. The author drops amusing truths along the story, such as when Denny realizes “so we really are the older generation now, aren’t we?” This book will mostly appeal to the more mature lady and gently teaches some great lessons on enjoying life at any age. My thanks to #NetGalley and #Boldwood Books for an advance copy. Highly recommended.
The Old Ducks’ Hen Do by Maddie Please is a really fun contemporary novel that I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters are all in their sixties showing that life is for living. “Life is what you make it.” You are never too old to have a fresh start or to have fun. Ten days in Mallorca for a hen do really invigorate the characters. Their villa is next door to a male group of twitchers, all over sixty. Together they have fun and characters who have been dormant for years, begin to blossom. A chance meeting with an old sweetheart, sets a heart a flutter, as the years just peel away. Like a vintage wine, age has improved both of them. All the characters are delightfully drawn. They know how to have fun. This light-filled atmosphere illuminates’ lives. Easy banter volleys backwards and forwards between the characters. It is also highly amusing. I absolutely loved The Old Ducks’ Hen Do. It made me smile as I watched lives bud and blossom. Maddie Please writes in a very personable style. It is easy to empathise and relate to her characters – although not the scene on the nun’s private beach! Got to read the book to see what I mean! Grab life with both hands and really live it! I will leave you with my favourite quote: “Fear is temporary, regret is forever.” I received a free copy via Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favorable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
