Set on defying her greedy father, Roberta (Robbie) Fletcher refuses to marry an old codger and joins the Everton Domestic Society where she happily helps widows with correspondence and figures. When Miles Hallsmith proposes, she experiences a moment of elation. But, his admission he'd been sent by her father and his brother crushed her heart. Instead of refusing him, she puts him to the task of finding out what their relatives have to gain from the match.
Miles had been smitten by Robbie from the moment he'd met her at a ball. As a third son with no means of supporting a wife, he'd had no right to court her. When the lady's father and his own despicable brother insist, he marry the object of his affection, he is torn between desire and suspicion.
Everton Ladies are notoriously brilliant and Robbie is not to be toyed with. Miles must prove his feelings are motivated by more than the lure of independence and money while thwarting his brother's disastrous plots. Bad blood and lingering doubts keep this couple apart. It will take honesty and cunning to bring them their heart's desire.

What a great novella! Really enjoyed these two, and that we got him, the brother of the heroine of the 1st book in this series, as a hero in this one! And the way that they solved their problems, yeah, it was so awesome!

I must confess that I wanted this book because of the beautiful cover, but it was the story within that brought this cover to life. The author gives you tidbits of information along the way, keeping you engaged with each page you turn. I loved this story so much I went and purchased the other 4 books in the series. Click, click, click, click and I'm onto the next.

This story was a novella regarding two people who had that instant attraction upon the first time they met but some time later hid those inner thoughts due to a cloud of distrust and the unlawful actions of family members.

Miles won my heart immediately with his honesty and how charismatic he was without trying. Roberta (Robbie) was not a fragile female who did not mince her words. Most times, she said exactly what was on her mind without thinking. They're both refreshing and lovable.

I look forward to the rest of the series.

A cute, sweet and short story. Robbie and Miles had met before and Robbie made quite an impression on Miles. If he had been in a good position, he would have offered for her. Robbie thought he didn't care for her because she hadn't heard from him. One day he shows up at the Everton Domestic Society with a marriage proposal. Of course she knew her father had his hand in it and declined. Miles is heart broken and promises to find out why her father wants him to marry Robbie. They grow closer as they seek the answers. Will he succeed?

For a very short story, that would have made a better long one, I found this an easy read. I will say I have not read the other stories from this series but found it intriguing that there was a place for young women to go that didn't it couldn't marry.

Roberts Fletcher is smart, funny, blunt when nervous, and witty. She refuses to give into her father's corrupt morals. She values her worth.

Miles Hallsmith is a third son and had to work for his living. That comes in the form of his greedy, self-serving oldest brother. He values are for kindness, caring, and good of all.

Now being told he must propose to Roberta, Miles wants to know why. He already wishes he could but with not enough income to support her, he refuses. So what is he to do, why that's easy. Tell her the truth!

Now Roberta must chose, marry Miles' and thwart her father's plan or continue as an employed worker. She finds Miles honesty to be refreshing. However, She does know her father will do anything to reigned in what is being offered for her dowry because of his greed. When Miles discovers what is truly going on the two of them make a plan to get what they deserve.

Enjoy this fast, witty short story.

This was a very quick read.

Miles is forced to propose to Roberta because her father and his elder brother have made a secret political deal.

They met in the past, but Miles did not follow through on their introduction because he had no money of his own. Now the possible marriage could become an advantage to both of them. And there is an attraction on both sides.

Miles is a man of honor. He has a reputation for always doing the best thing for others of his acquaintance.

Roberta has thwarted her father because he has never actually considered her and her desires.

Both Miles' brother and Roberta's father are less than nice people. Seeing them not get their way adds a little bonus to the story.

I enjoyed this story and anyone who likes a quick happy ending, will enjoy meeting Miles and Roberta.

I enjoyed this unique story line about Miles and Robbie. The plight of a third son under the heel of bully brother was a fresh take on a typical romance. Robbie’s situation and hidden agenda of her father up a final twist in thestory. A very enjoyable novella!
