After narrowly escaping a Xenomorph attack and crash landing on the wrong planet, former military man Chris Temple just wants a peaceful life with his daughters. He just needs to deal with the brewing civil war and a Xenomorph on the loose.
War will always find a man like you.
This ALIEN story begins where most with a xenomorph loose on a damaged spaceship hurtling through space. Once a highly decorated marine, Chris Temple, a recently widowed single father to two young daughters, Jane, 11, and Emma, 8, is onboard. Despite his particular set of skills, Chris doesn't get involved in the fight with the alien, instead focusing on keeping his children safe as the ship comes in for a crash landing.
The family land safely on an idyllic outpost planet, where Chris is told that the ship has been destroyed beyond recognition and nothing could have survived the crash. That's only the first lie. Chris and his daughters love their new life, but something doesn't feel right. Chris is a paranoid type, but just because he's paranoid, doesn't mean he's wrong.
There are nasty surprises in store as Chris investigates the web of lies and conspiracies. After leaving a ruined Earth, it seems Chris and his daughters have crash-landed on a planet on the verge of all-out civil war. Chris will have to call on the battle skills he never wanted to use again in order to protect his daughters, deal with violence-hungry marines, and battle the xenomorph that's killing people regardless of which side of the civil war they're on.
Alien: Uncivil War by Brendan Deneen is one of the many Aliens franchise books out there. Unfortunately it is not my favorite (not even close) and I found myself quite disappointed at how predictable this whole affair was. Surely the main character could tell he was getting the wool pulled over his eyes, but nope.
Not nearly Xenomorph interactions and this guff of the author giving two drones different genders was a bit weird. Normally the females are queens, right? Please do correct me if I am wrong.
The petting was my favorite part because I would pet that dawg too.
Honestly, it was just another easy to read Aliens book. Next.
Retired USM Colonel Chris Temple wants to raise his young daughters in peace. When the transport ship they're travelling on is infested by a xenomorph, he escapes and crash lands on LV-1213. Welcomed by the mining colonists, Temple soon becomes suspicious of them and finds himself facing a catastrophe where his only option is to get his daughters and get away.
I try to avoid spoilers, but since this is an 'Alien' novel, hopefully everyone is expecting a catastrophic event and the urgent need to escape. Deneen's writing is brisk and the story is well paced for the action sequences. The characters sometimes feel a bit flat, but they serve the plot well. This has action, thrills and a couple of big "boos" to make readers jump appropriately.
This was a fun book! My firsr Alien franchise novel. It is fast paced, has a likable main character, delves into each of the essential components of an Alien work adequately, and has good twists and turns that keep the reader engaged.
