Resorting to Romance

Love checks in―even if it’s an unwelcome guest―in this delightful smalltown romance from USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Shirk…

It was supposed to be L.A. attorney Loni Wingate’s perfect day. Instead, she got only chaos and heartbreak. Her fiancé stole her promotion and ended their engagement, leaving her career and her future dangling by a thread. Then when Loni tries to go to her safe place, her family’s quaint North Carolina resort, she finds it’s up for sale.

But Loni didn’t get to where she is without a fight. So if a developer is coming by to assess the property, the place she feels most connected to her long-gone Mama…well, Loni and her sisters will serve up a taste of Southern hospitality he’ll never forget.

Ian Hollowell hasn’t experienced “Southern hospitality” firsthand, but he’s pretty sure this is not it. Between the storage room accommodation, the all-sugar sweet tea, and a lethally hot pepper omelet, he’s getting the sense his welcome is anything but. Still, he didn’t get his ruthless reputation by quitting when the game gets interesting.

And Loni is one adversary Ian can’t resist… especially when family revelations start pushing Loni to question her loyalties.

Now a round of “keep your enemies close” might be flipped on its head in bestselling author Jennifer Shirk’s sparkling and stirring story about reconsidering the past in order to shape the future. Because sometimes it takes one last resort to find the place―and people―that truly feel like home.

Sometimes you run into a book where really enjoy the theme but sometimes the plot and the characters leave you with mixed feelings. It doesn’t happen often to me, but this story is one of those where I had some of those feelings.

To begin with, I had a tough time connecting with the characters. I think that the female lead, Loni, did not show good judgment in defense of herself at her job. That started the downfall for me.

The story incorporates three sisters and it seemed much of the story was them talking. There are many areas where the author lost my attention. Their jokes against the male lead character were not funny and actually quite rude. I really had a hard time with him finding what was attractive about Loni.

I think that’s where a lot of my conflict comes into play. I did not connect with the characters. I liked the male lead for the most part, although he never really worked that much to show his “predator“ status. Honestly, I felt they all could be better developed.

However, I love the concept of the story and there were several supporting characters that were enjoyable. The locale was amazing and really drew you into the fabric of the town.

While the author did a great job in certain aspects of the story, I was really looking for more in terms of the connection and the fire between a romantic couple. This is a clean romance, but I never really felt that passion that convinced me they needed to be together.

For a light-hearted women’s fiction, Resorting to Romance is a great choice. It may be the perfect getaway for you.

“Loni may have sounded and looked like a Southern belle, but the only thing pretentious about her was her name…”

There is more to this book than meets the eye. Yes, it’s a sweet romance that takes place near a North Carolina beach, but it’s also a story of three sisters coming together to save their deceased mother’s legacy. When developer, Ian, comes to town on their father’s instruction, the sisters unite and the results are full of spicy dishes, rundown shacks, sizzling flames of attraction, and all sorts of Southern hospitality and charm…kind of. Let’s just say it was funny. These characters are full of life and are such a joy to read about.

I found the slight mysteries to give an added dimension to this delightful beach read. I think it would be a treat to read a story about the other two sisters. This is another great story by this author.

Content: moderate language; fade-to-black/innuendo

Hi, all! Yes, suprise surprise that I would love this book, considering I wrote it. :-) But I do love it!
It was so fun to pit Loni and Ian against one another. They almost made it too easy.
So, now, I'd like to share a little excerpt of their first meeting:

He smiled and held out his hand. “Ian Hollowell. Nice to meet you.”

Her friendly smile faded, and she did not shake his hand. “Oh, yes, uh, hi.” She quickly picked up the phone instead and spoke into it. “Code Red,” she blurted.

Ian blinked. Code red? He glanced at Lucille who had her arms folded as rigidly as a bouncer, and the wide-eyed look of someone waiting for a drug bust to go down. Ah…and then he suddenly got it. He was the “code red”.

Interesting. But also a tad worrying.

Another blond-haired woman suddenly emerged from the back office. The woman wore a yellow sundress that fell over her curves like a snakeskin, and she tossed her hair off her shoulders like she was a contestant on American’s Next Top Model. A small smile tugged at her red-lipped mouth when she looked at him, and that’s when Ian almost forgot his own name. Hell, he’d bet most men would have taken one look into those ocean-blue eyes and have forgotten how to breathe. Damn.
“Ian Hollowell,” she said, pleasantly, coming around the desk to greet him. “Our daddy said you were coming to visit us. My name is Apollonia Wingate, but you can most certainly call me Loni seeing as you’re such a good friend of our daddy’s. Believe me when I say that we are happier than an ol' dog layin' on the porch chewin' on a big ol' catfish head to have you with us.”

Marise snorted a laugh but quickly raised her hand to cover her mouth. “Oh, yes, um, ditto.” She looked about to laugh again, but a cross look from her sister had her sobering fast. “Ain’t this just the berries to have you here,” she mimicked, her southern drawl suddenly becoming as pronounced and as thick as Loni’s. “I’m so sorry if I was rude to you when you first came in, Ian. I’m Marise Wingate. Daddy mentioned you were coming, but I just wasn’t expecting you so soon and to be so…um, so…”

“Fine as a frog hair split four ways?” Lucille interjected.

Loni wrinkled her nose. “I wouldn’t go that far.”

Lucille grinned. “I would.”

Loni shot the woman a warning look. “Lucille, why don’t you get our new friend and guest a glass of sweet tea? This Yankee looks positively drenched from all this southern heat. I made a fresh batch in the back refrigerator. There are some mason jars on the counter, too. Have it delivered to his room as soon as possible.” She turned her pretty blue eyes back his way and wrapped her neatly manicured fingers around his arm. “Come with me, sugar. It would be my honor as a Carolinian and a Wingate to show you to your room personally.”

Ian bit back a grin as he allowed himself to be led away. He wasn’t sure what game the sisters were playing, and to be honest, he didn’t really care at the moment. There were worse things to endure than the company of an attractive and obviously clever woman. However, something told him that Joe hadn’t adequately prepared him for what he was in for with his daughters.

Hope you enjoy it! :)

As the cover eludes this is such a perfect summer beach read. It’s light easy read and fun! The story takes place mostly at a resort in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. Loni and her two sisters are working to try to keep their family resort operating and functioning with the growing increase of VRBO’s. Ian is contacted by their dad to buy the resort to sell for future development. Resorting to Romance is a great enemies to lovers with family drama sprinkled in. A story about finding yourself, family, love, trusting others.

Love Jennifer Shirk books! I was fortunate to get ARC copy of her latest one, Resorting To Romance! Wonderful plot. Middle sister Loni returns to Sandy Bottom Hotel which her two sisters run for their father. The characters are so well formed you feel like they are friends. Think I want to beg Jennifer to write a book featuring Marise (the younger sister). Does Marise get the addition built onto the hotel for a wedding venue? Does Kalinda (the older sister) get a larger area for her 'The White Squirrel Cafe' so she can serve dinners too? Does the 'Bank' building get renovated and have an office for Loni to open up her own Law office? Does she stay with the super hot Ian? Please tell me more Jennifer! (Didn't want to but spoilers).

This is a really sweet, perfect beach read. Loni is small town girl who returns from big city determined to save her family resort. Ian is a lone wolf ready to steal it. This dynamic leads to a fun and flirty enemies to lovers.

In addition to the romance, there is complicated family drama that gives interesting side stories. The dynamic of the three sisters is very entertaining. And given their set up, I am looking forward to their books.

Overall, 4⭐️ and highly recommend!

I recently read Jennifer Shirk's Resorting to Romance and found it to be a heartfelt journey to Sunny Banks, a charming family resort. This contemporary love story dives into life, love, and second chances, making it a cozy read for romance fans like me.

The story follows Loni, an LA attorney engaged to Blaze. Just as her job and relationship start to unravel, she learns that her father plans to sell the family resort. Heading back to Sunny Banks to save it, Loni unexpectedly develops feelings for Ian, the developer interested in buying the property. As she battles to save the resort, Loni finds herself torn between her past and an uncertain future.

I enjoyed how Shirk developed the characters, especially Loni and Ian, whose chemistry grew steadily. The themes of family strength, second chances, and forgiveness really resonated with me, and the vivid descriptions of Sunny Banks made it easy to picture.

However, the pacing felt uneven at times, and the romance between Loni and Ian could have been more dynamic. Some secondary characters lacked depth, which I think could have enriched the story.

Overall, Resorting to Romance is a pleasant read with a heartwarming tale of love, family, and second chances. While it may not be groundbreaking, it provides a comforting escape to a nostalgic resort. If you’re looking for a light romance with meaningful themes, I'd recommend giving Resorting to Romance a try. Despite its flaws, it captures the essence of finding love and purpose in unexpected places.

Resorting to Romance

I received this book for my honest opinion.

You will meet Loni, she lives in L.A. with her fiancé. She is about to make partner at her firm and she will finally have everything that she has ever wanted in life. However, the day of the promotion she gets told that she will not be making partner due to a mistake she made, even though she knows for a fact that she didn’t do that. She finds out later that day that her fiance got the partnership and he is breaking up with her. With just a suitcase she takes a much needed vacation to her family’s resort in North Carolina, but when she gets there she starts to help her sisters with making sure that their father doesn’t sell the resort and they will get to keep it in the family. She meets the handsome Ian, the developer that her father has hired to sell the property, Loni and her sisters will stop at nothing to make sure that Ian is scared away and never comes back…. But after a few late night talks with Ian, Loni isn’t sure if she wants to send him away anymore. The only thing she knows is that she will do whatever she can to make sure that the resort is not sold.

This book would make a cute Netflix or Hallmark movie, I know that I would watch it over and over again. I loved that you will see the southern hospitality at its finest, and you will see the “oh bless his heart” in the book as well. The author knows how to write a book that will help the readers by drawing them in and making them feel like they’re part of the book/they know the characters themselves. The plot was just perfect for a romcom, you will find the build of the plot at the start of the book, you will see the oh no moments and then you will watch the characters heal themselves and of course the HEA. The pace is just right, I loved the slow times because we got to know the characters better, but even during the slow pace times it really didn’t feel like it was slowing down because you will just fly through the book.

I found the characters to be easily understood, and easy to connect with. I felt as though I have known them for years just half way through the book. I liked that we really got to understand more about what was the underlying motivations for the sisters with this resort and why it was so important and even after the major moment in the book you will see the sisters still together and showing a unified bond between each other. I found Ian to be a typical “f boy”, but the more that you get to know him and understand the reasons why he is this way you will have a hard time hating him like I did. This book is a closed door romance, but you can feel the chemistry between Loni and Ian right away and just watch it build more and more. I was so happy for both of them.

If you’re looking for a great beach/summer read, one that is filled with romance, laughter, some heartbreaking moments and so much more you will have to pick up this book.

I want to thank NetGalley and Entangled publishing for the opportunity to review this book.

This was a quick, easy read that was cute and enjoyable.

Loni is a lawyer in LA whose life has basically imploded in the past 24 hours, so she returns to her small hometown in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Her sisters have told her that their dad has decided to sell the resort they grew up in before he remarries, and Loni makes it her new mission to change his mind. What she doesn’t realize is she’ll be up against handsome developer Ian, sent by her dad with his own mission to acquire the property for his company. Too bad he’s so hard to stay away from.

There were times I laughed out loud when Ian first arrived at the resort and Loni was determined to make life as difficult as possible for him. They had a snappy banter and each could give as good as they got when it came to quick-witted retorts. The two of them had good chemistry, and it was sweet as they went from enemies to friends to more. (The book is fade-to-black/closed door, FYI.) Ian’s backstory made his character and reluctance to form committed relationships make sense, though at times I felt we were told more about who he was than actually shown through his actions. He seemed to want to be more ruthless than he ever really was.

I enjoyed Loni’s relationships with her sisters. It felt genuine. Some of the family dynamics were confusing and the history and current status with her dad was a bit odd, but for the most part it all sorted itself out. Enough little crumbs were dropped to give me the vibe that this will possibly be a series with each sister getting a book.

Thank you to Entangled Publishing for my advance electronic copy via NetGalley. My opinions are my own.

Loni Windgate was supposed to be made partner at her LA law firm today. Instead, she lost her (mysoginist) fiancé and her career is in serious jeopardy. To top it all off, she finds out that her dad is selling their North Carolina resort out from under her and her sisters. Loni rushes back to wage war against Ian, the developer coming to assess the property, but instead of smashing the deal, she finds herself feeling more and more safe with him as she sorts out her complicated feelings about home and family. With their opposing objectives threatening to crush each others' dreams, they may end up re-defining what "home" means, or they may drive each other away forever.

This is a romance worthy of Hallmark! Pure escapism: enormously attractive opposites, becoming soulmates in a very short period of time, and magically falling in love thus healing lifelong trust issues for a happily ever after...lovely! This is a closed-door romance with a great consent rep, which I love. It also gives us enough storyline for Loni's two sisters that I suspect we may be seeing a series-in-the-making. Loni and Ian defy the odds stacked against them and help each other through hard times so that it all works out in the end--an easy, light summer beach read (bonus: it's set at the beach!).

As always, Entangled gives a great content warning at the beginning of the book. Here are the triggers I want to highlight: references to death of a loved one, sexual harassment, betrayal, alcoholism

𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆: Loni lost her promotion and her fiance when is called back to her home in NC to help out with the family resort, the resort that her Dad wants to sell. Ian is the investor sent to the resort by her father to the scope out the potential of the place. Ian and Loni definitely butt heads at first meeting, Loni and her sisters try to make Ian so uncomfortable he leaves on his own. Soon Ian and Loni discover a common ground and maybe more along the way.

🏖️ Hallmark movies

𝗠𝘆 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: I loved the premise of this story, it was the perfect set up for a romance. I found the writing a bit lacking to make this story really soar. I wasn't completely invested in the characters and the relationship between Ian and Loni wasn't well developed. I think this would be a great beach read if you like Hallmark movies and the cheesy insta love with a HEA ending. I still enjoyed this quick read and and happy to have been selected to read it.

I am a self-admitted book worm, and I have been the majority of my life. The genre that I can never get enough of is romance. Here lately, in addition to romantic suspense books, however, at my core I am still a fan of traditional romance. Because of this, I was extremely excited to read this book.

I tend to be hesitant to read books from a new author, because it can sometimes take me a while to get used to their writing style. I am pleased to say that this booked hooked me from the very beginning. I also liked that I could see both of the main characters’ perspectives. I wanted both of them to win.

I also liked that the secondary characters made you care about them also. I really hope that we eventually get to see additional books with some of the other characters.

I really loved this book, and I am very disappointed that I am done with it. If no additional books are planned, I would love to get a bonus epilogue or something down the line. I recommend this book, and cannot wait to see what is next from this author.

Book: Resorting to Romance
Author: Jennifer Shirk
Rating: 5/5 stars

If you're looking for a delightful and heartwarming summer read that focuses on family, redemption, and good banter, then Resorting to Romance is the book for you!
In this contemporary romance, the main character Loni must head back to her family resort in North Carolina to save it after her father announces that he is going to sell it. The family resort was her mother's legacy, and she doesn't want to let it go that easily. Enter Ian, who is the developer sent to look at the resort to see what he can do with the property. Loni and her sisters create a plan to give him their own southern welcome and hospitality - and hopefully save the resort!

I enjoyed the dual POVs in the book, as I found that it really gave an inside look into the developing relationship between Loni and Ian. I also really enjoyed the banter and the pacing of the overall story. Once I knew the premise of the resort needing to be saved, I needed to know what was going to happen next! I hope in the future that Loni's sister's stories are possibly explored further - as I would love to read more of the Wingate's family happenings!

Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the opportunity to read the e-ARC of Resorting to Romance.

Oh I do love a good enemies to lovers romance and this one was no exception.

Loni, a hard hitting lawyer manages to turn on the southern charm and be all coy and demure when she needs to be - Ian didn’t stand a chance! I didn’t like the way she was treated at her law firm and by her fiancé - she deserved so much better.

There were some funny moments in this and amongst this humour was an underlying theme of family values and standing up for what you believe in.

I really enjoyed the family dynamics and the relationship between the three sisters and I hope there’s more from them. There’s so much potential there ☺️

This is a perfect beach read for the summer and I hope you enjoy it too!

Loni left her hometown to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer where she is in the running to be named a partner. Instead of getting the promotion she finds herself being investigated and her fiancé, who was named partner, wants to take a break. Needing to get away she heads back to the family resort that holds so many family memories only to learn that her father plans to sell it.

Ian is a property developer who is also friends with Loni’s dad. He is interested in buying the resort, so he decides to take a visit to check it out. His appearance is not welcomed by Loni or her sisters but even though he and Loni find themselves on opposite sides that doesn’t diminish the feelings they are developing for each other.

This is a heartwarming story as Loni and her sisters fight for the resort but realize that there is a lot about the past they don’t know while Ian will have to choose what truly matters. I did enjoy getting to meet her sisters as well and hope that we will get to see them find their happy ever afters as well.

I had the opportunity to read Resorting to Romance, by Jennifer Shirk, before its release on July 2, 2024! 🌊☀️❤️

This was the sweetest little beach romance novel! It was giving Hallmark in all the best ways possible.

Loni is a successful attorney in Los Angeles, but after a shake up at work she find herself headed back to the small beach town she grew up in!

As Loni gets reacquainted with her sisters, she learns that her father wants to sell the beloved resort that he owned with their late mother. She struggles to understand why her father would want to do such a thing.

In walks Ian, the very attractive developer Loni’s father wants to sell the resort to. Loni and her sisters plan to show Ian what southern hospitality is all about, but perhaps love is in the air or at least some heavy flirting!

The was an easy read filled with betrayal, love, and family secrets, but not so heavy that you don’t find yourself giggling at the banter.

Thank you to Entangled Publishing for this E-Arc! This was a super cute summer romance read and one I would recommend to anyone who loves summer romances! The was an easy read filled with love, family secrets, betrayal, sibling connections, and family coming together.

Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite book tropes, and this book did not disappoint! The relationship between Loni and Ian is so sweet. I am a sucker for dual POVs and you really got to know both Loni and Ian and got to see their relationship grow through both of their POVs. What started out as a shaky introduction as Ian is in town for his company to buy Loni's family resort, turned into a blooming romance. It was hilarious watching the sisters try to sabotage Ian's stay and to make him back out of the sale. The banter between Loni and Ian is perfect. This is a closed door romance, but that did not turn me way from this book. I thought it was really well written and you still got to feel the emotions the characters were feeling.

This was a sweet, contemporary romance. After a hit to her pride and her job, Loni boards a plane and heads home to clear her head and get some distance between her douche-canoe of an ex-fiance. When she arrives home she finds out that her father has moved on 5 years after her mothers death and is getting married. Not only is he getting remarried, but he wants to sell the resort her parents ran together - despite the fact that two out of three daughters are keeping it running.

There's a lot of angst going on in this book. There's some awkward parent and adult-child relationship reveals and growth. There's middle child syndrome (poor Loni) and while I loved most of the characters, I was not a fan of their fathers because he was a crappy father and awful at communication.

Loni and Ian were so sweet together though, but I wanted to kick him at the end, but then it was a HEA so it ended up being alright.

5⭐
1🌶️ - I didn't really think this was spicy at all, but there are a few fade to black moments that had some shirtless-ness involved so I'll give it a one.

Resorting to Romance is such a fun flirty read by Jennifer Shirk. Two delightful characters who are seemingly on opposites sides but it is hard for them and for me to remember why they were enemies. Some serious family secrets get revealed while the three sisters in the story grow closer. Ian and Loni may not have a huge amount of character growth but they do make some necessary life changes. It may cost them financially in the end but the life benefits are priceless. This is the North Carolina coast that I know and love.

Their story is summer fun at it’s best. The characters including the supporting ones on the family NC resort are unique but lovable. The bedroom door is firmly closed but somethings are implied between Ian and Loni before the story is finished. Have a little fun and read Resorting to Romance. I am hoping that there is more to come with the other two sisters.

L.A. attorney Loni Wingate has it all, or so she thinks till her fiancé steals her promotion and breaks up with her, and she gets put on probation at her workplace for a mistake she is pretty sure she didn’t do. An SOS call from her sister, has her going to her safe place, her family’s quaint North Carolina resort, only to learn it’s being sold by her dad. And to top it all the hunky man standing in front of her is the developer come to inspect the resort.
This was a cute read. There was a lot happening in the book - family secrets, bonding between the sisters, in a way reconnecting with her dad, witty banter, some memorable secondary characters and a beautiful romance. This is a perfect summer read and I hope the author plans to give Kalinda, Marise their own books.

🥰Don’t waste energy trying to change people’s opinion of you. Stay true to yourself, sugar. Never settle for anything less.
🐚“I’ll help, too,” Ian blurted, then froze. What. Did. He. Just. Say? Seashell collecting? Did he really just offer to do that? Ugh. Now look what the south had made him do.

Thank you 🤗 to Jennifer Shirk, Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of Resorting to Romance!

Loni had everything she thought she wanted until one tiny mistake at work called all of that into question. She leaves LA to go back to her family's beach resort in NC. When she gets there, she finds out that her father is about to sell the resort to developers. Not on Loni's watch! She sets up several pranks for Ian, her father's developer friend. Those are hilarious, but they also put Loni and Ian in close proximity. They start to realize that they have things in common, especially some serious chemistry. I loved the characters in this small town, and I had a great time waiting to see what came next. I am excited for Loni's sisters to get stories soon.

This is the first book I’ve read by Jennifer and I really enjoyed it. Full of laughs, adventures, amazing banter and amazing characters

Loni is back in her hometown after a tough time. She’s determined to stop Dave the family resort but has a challenge ahead of her.

Ian’s in town to complete a business transaction…he is confident, strong and determined. What he doesn’t expect is Loni.

Loni and Ian’s interactions are funny, full of amazing banter and undeniable chemistry. Although they are at odds…the more time they spend together their feelings change. They become great confidants, lovers and partners.

A fun and delightful read.

Thank you NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC of “Resorting to Romance” by Jennifer Shirk.

Enemies to lovers will always be one of my favourite tropes and this rom-com did not disappoint! The book is full of witty banter, loveable characters and a sense of community.
I enjoyed seeing the relationships of the three sisters but also between the FMC Loni and the MMC Ian. The book took me on an emotional rollercoaster. Recommending this book for anyone looking for a funny, lighthearted and witty romance perfect for your summer vacation.

This book gave major hallmark movie vibes in all the best ways. Big city developer coming in to buy small town resort and meeting the stubborn daughter obstacle. Immediately have my vote. I absolutely loved all the pranks Loni and her sisters pulled on Ian to try to make him give up and go home, and I loved having sort of a mystery going on in the background of the book to give the main characters something to work on together and bond over. I loved all the southern charm packed into this book and all the lessons on small town community and found family. I could not have been more obsessed with all the quirky background characters. I could totally go for this becoming a series and getting follow up stories for both of Loni’s sisters. I would love to see their happily ever afters. I could not be happier with the ending of this book and the growth in both Loni and Ian. Basically, read this one for the Bridgerton references alone! 😂

This is a really funny romance. The three sisters are fantastic and will give readers plenty of opportunity for laughter. The plot of the story is lively and includes the characters discovering secrets about themselves and others. The dialogue is amazing and adds to the authenticity of the small town southern setting. Readers will be hard pressed to pick a favorite character as there are so many great ones. Sit back and enjoy this warm and inviting romantic comedy.

Resorting to Romance was such a cute and refreshing read. After busting her tail to make partner at her law firm, things crash down around Loni when she loses her promotion, her finance, and learns her father is ready to sell the family owned resort she calls home. Ian is the hunky, emotional closed developer Loni’s father has sent to deal with the sell of the resort. All plans detail once Loni and Ian grow closer and a lot more than the resort is on the line.

Jennifer Shirk was able to put me on a rollercoaster of emotions and then tie the story up nicely with a bow and happy ever after! I’m so grateful to netgalley and entangled publishing for the opportunity to read this story!
