The Magic of Sea Glass

Rate this book
After the loss of her fiancé a year ago, event planner Lauren Sutton can't seem to go on with her choice of career or the life she'd built with her fiancé any longer. Floundering emotionally, she makes a snap decision to sell her half of the business and spend the summer among the sand dunes and changing tides of the Outer Banks, taking care of an old inn in Rodanthe, North Carolina with its elderly owner Mary Everett. Perhaps the salty breezes of the Atlantic and the warmth of summer sun on her face will help her find her direction. What she doesn't expect to find is a story hidden away in a string of sea glass that will change her life forever. And complicating things is local fisherman Brody Harrison. All she'd wanted was to sink her toes in the sand and let the coastal breeze calm her aching heart. But Brody shakes up her plan in ways she'd never imagined.

So many quotes from this book….

“Sometimes, the only way forward is to take a blind step into the day.”

“But we’re not meant to handle life all on our own. We’re meant to be with friends and people who will help us out.”

“The key to a happy life is to never let anything go unsaid or undone.”

“You found a piece of sea glass... It’s so beautiful… I consider the owner lucky to find such a piece… Why’s that… A bottle has to be abandoned and shattered, completely lost, and then each piece is gathered up, caressed, and meticulously smoothed by the ocean… The nature of it alone makes it feel like hope from a broken past, to me… It’s as if the universe is rooting for you and leaving a message of hope in your path.”

“Life’s little treasures are only visible to the ones who are open enough to see them.”

“The pain doesn’t go away, but the love they had for you doesn’t either. You just have to learn which one you want to breathe into your lungs every day.”

“He’d say, ‘Come on, kid, the sunshine’s stronger than the storm. Know how I know that? Because if it wasn’t we’d all have drowned by now.’”

“It’s hard to see the lighter moments sometimes... Maybe we can look for those moments together, Just a tiny ray at first, and then eventually, one day, the sun will peek through. And the storm will pass... It always passes.”

“Some people come into our lives to help us get where we’re going, but they were never meant to stay.”

“…life is that sea glass: broken, jagged pieces, left to the elements. And yet, in the turbulence of storms they are made beautiful.”

“If I can offer you one piece of advice, it would be that none of us know how long we have on this earth, and I’m learning that no matter what, we should make the very most of the time we’re given.”

**If you haven’t read the book, you may want to stop reading here**

“…she felt like she had his blessing to move forward and to live the life he would have wanted for her.”

“I didn’t think I would ever understand it, but I know now how you both came through your losses and made it safely to the other side. It’s because you carry the love with you. You know they’re here.”

“She was able to speak of him without sadness today, and she could feel the love and hope radiating from inside. He used to say she was stubborn, and she definitely had been when it came to moving past his loss, but, just as he had in life, he’d managed to her to change her mind.”

“He was giving her a little push to do even more of the things he’d planned for them, and to do them with someone wonderful.”

“Real joy that she hadn’t known was possible filled her… finding him had changed them both.”

“While the last year had been trying, what she’d learned was that if she just held on through the hard parts, she’d make it to the other side. Mason’s voice floated into her mind: The sunshine’s stronger than the storm.”

The Magic of Sea Glass by Jenny Hale
Contemporary fiction with a touch of romance. Women’s fiction. Multiple time lines.
A sea glass bracelet brings long lost family together and helps a woman grieve and accept loss.

🎧 the audiobook is narrated by Emma Love. The performance is wonderful and modulation follows the storyline with joy and grief, friendships and family. There are distinct voices for Lauren and Brody and a few secondary characters. Her tones were soothing and warm.
For the audio version, you must pay attention to chapter changes to clearly follow the back and forth time lines and character changes.
I listened to this at 1.5 which is my standard for the best conversational speed.

From the grief of loss, to the joy of planning a wedding, to business choices and family complications, from babies to grandparents, this story covers the full range of emotions.
Cheerful and lovable in whole.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley and Dreamscape Media.

I loved this book! The Magic of Sea Glass is the story of Lauren Sutton. Lauren was a well known and highly sought after event planner, her specialty was weddings. She and her partner have their own TV show. Since her fiancé died a year ago, Lauren can’t seem to go on with her choice of career or the life she’d built with her fiancé any longer. She decides to sell her share of the business to her partner and take that vacation that they were supposed to take together. She ends up in Rodanthe, North Carolins working as an assistant for Mary Everett, the elder owner of a small inn. She loves walking the beach with the wind in her face, collecting sea glass. A local business owner has a beautiful sea glass bracelet that he gives to Lauren, because it feels like that is where it belongs. Mary needs a lot of help as the Inn is beginning to look a little rough. Local fisherman/handyman/and all round good guy, Brody Harrison is helping Mary do some repairs and renovations. With Brodie and Lauren often pushed together, they become friends and she begins to open up. When she is backed into a corner planning a wedding for a friend of Brodie at the Inn, events take a twisty turn.

This book really called to me. Lauren was grieving and just needed to get away from all the people that knew about her tragedy and the places that brought back memories. She was hiding, but also knew she needed to live. I loved how quickly she bonded with Mary and helped her to bring more notice to the Inn, put practices in place to give it that homey, yet vacation feel and become part of the community. Brody was that all round nice guy, one who helped others, and a swoon worthy character that I wanted Lauren to notice. The secondary characters played major roles in this book and were amazing people. They all welcomed Lauren to town and helped her acclimatize. The family secrets that came to light were surprising, but what a lovely ending to this book. I have to say this was one of my favourites in the 20 Books of Summer. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Emma Love. This is the first time I have listened to her perform an audiobook and I enjoyed her voice, inflection, and expression. This was a great book to listen to while sitting in the sun, walking and working in the backyard under the sun.

There was grief, there was sea glass, there was a small town fisherman, there was sea glass, there was more sea glass, there was zero nuance & there was a bit more sea glass.

If you are looking for a great beach read, look no further! I am a fan of Jenny Hale's books and I love this new story.

From the gorgeous cover to the phenomenal characters to a plot that sucks you in on the first page, the beautiful North Carolina setting this is what summer reading is all about.

I absolutely adored this lovely bunch of characters, all so well lined out, all of them adding a spark to the story.
Lauren is a very relatable character and she goes through a real and raw journey in this book, learning to trust again and not building too many walls around herself. Jenny Hale managed to include it in the story in a great and exciting way.
The Magic of Sea Glass is one of those books you can easily fall into and binge your way to the finish without looking up

It’s full of emotions, beautiful descriptions, budding friendships, true authentic characters, love, romance and so much more.
This book is all I needed to feel the romance of summer.
I promise you won't be disappointed by Jenny's writing.

Mrs. Hale, Thank You for creating characters who are real, who go through these tough relatable situations and for a beautiful story I couldn't get enough of.

After losing her fiancé a year ago, event planner Lauren Sutton is having trouble continuing with her career. Planning weddings, being a part of people’s happily-ever-after is too painful. She makes a decision to sell her half of the business and spend the summer in the Outer Banks, taking care of an old inn with its elderly owner. She is in no way expecting to find a story hidden away in seaglass. Also, local fisherman Brody Harrison makes her question her plans.

What a bittersweet, magical story of summer! Any story set at the beach is automatically one I know I want to read. As with the last Jenny Hale novel I read (The Christmas Letters), the author seamlessly weaves together heartache and hope. She also writes such a warm, comfortable characters that feel like I know them. If ever there is a summer beach read, it’s this one: a sweet, second chance romance that feels like a warm hug.

“The Magic of the Sea Glass” is out May 9th! Thank you to the author and Harpeth Road Press for the ARC!

I really enjoyed this story. Oh, how I love novels that have anything tho do with the ocean or any other water view novels. I really enjoyed the way Jenny Hale brought the characters to life. She made me feel like I was right there with them. This was a terrific summer read. After looking at her book titles I am sure I will be reading more of her stories.

Not finishing this book, the writing sounds like a middle schooler. When the characters speak to each other it sounds more like an email than something any normal human would actually say in real life. Most of the characters seem really flat and boring, there’s no inferring what they’re feeling or any suspense at all they just say exactly everything they feel all the time. I honestly can’t believe this has so many good reviews it’s one of the worst books I’ve ever tried to read.

I’m fully engrossed in my summer reads and undeniably happy about it. 🏖

The Magic of Sea Glass, is Jenny Hale’s new summer release and current Kindle Unlimited choice, and it is absolutely magical. It is such a sweet, but substantial, enchanting story of found family, moving on from heartbreak, and second chances at love.

This story has two timelines, past and present, which helps to build a full and complete story. It’s atmospheric, set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and has the added element of discovered sea glass treasures that link aspects of the plot together. There are likable characters, family secrets, loss and love, all set amidst a beachy, summery setting. This is an engaging, quick read and one that will warm your heart and fill you with happiness and hope.

There’s so much to love about Jenny Hale’s newest story. The first of which is the location, which just happens to be my favorite place in the USA, the Outer Banks. Then there’s the great characters and connections, deep storylines and lots of entertainment.
Lauren is the owner of a successful wedding planning business with her best friend. Then one unfortunate night, tragedy strikes and Lauren loses her husband in an accident and it changes Lauren’s perspective on how she wants to go forward with her life, and she decides to sell her half of the business to her partner Andy and take a job as an innkeeper’s assistant on the Outer Banks. When her boss, Mary, gives her a sea glass bracelet as a welcoming gift, Lauren wonders if this might just be the sign that this might be the reset she needs. Then she meets hunky handyman Brody and her heart feels things she hasn’t felt in a long time, but she still can’t help thinking about her husband.
As the story progresses, there are flashbacks to the 1950s and at first I wondered how the two timelines were going to mesh together, but then there were plenty of moments that included sea glass to thread them together beautifully.
Read this if you enjoy beach settings, deep family drama, second chance love, found family, love and loss. This will leave you warm and fuzzy in the end.
Thanks to Harpeth Road Press and NetGalley for this audiobook arc in exchange for my review.

A cute story of overcoming grief. This one was another that I was a little skeptical of because I thought it’d be kind of depressing. Yes, there were sad parts but it also had a lot of happy and a lot with Lauren finding herself and really facing her grief. A lot of people try to sweep grief under the rug but Lauren had to face it head on and then overcome it too.

🌀Synopsis
Atoll grief stricken from the loss of her fiancé, Lauren needs a change of pace. She sells her wedding planning business to take a part time job at a seaside town and get away.
She finds more than she’s looking for when she meets fisherman Brody, who confuses her but also helps her through her grief. She ends up doing one last wedding for a local couple and it pushes all of her limits. Somewhere along the way that small town turns to family and within that family she finds a story that will impact her forever.
Around the same time, her mom finds out she was adopted. The bride for the wedding looks shockingly like Lauren. An old man in the hospital calls her by her mother’s name. There is a secret in the sea glass bracelet she’s wearing and Lauren is about to find out just how much these strangers really are her family.

After a long emotional ride, I was looking for a lite but good book. This breezy cover felt just like it.

A tale about dealing with human loss, new beginnings and healing from trauma - all conveyed in a sweet romantic tale set on the proximities of the Wedding industry. When I requested this book I had little to no clue how pure romance this would be.

Even when the book was dealing with sensitive topics, it conveyed them in soft blows which I am kinda thankful for! You may guess the direction in which the story is headed and it's not exactly unpredictable, but m sure once in a while, we all crave such light reads to unshed the loads and just go with the flow.

One of the best “romance” books I’ve read.

“Life is that sea glass: broken, jagged pieces, left to the elements. And yet, in the turbulence of the storms they are made beautiful.”

“The sunshine's stronger than the storm.”

Rodanthe, North Carolina, and the stunning Outer Banks provide a magical backdrop for The Magic of Sea Glass by Jenny Hale, a heartwarming story about second chances and healing after loss. I was drawn to this book for its coastal setting and its promise of a journey through grief and renewal, intertwined with the symbolism of sea glass. The story alternates between the present day and the 1960s, with the two timelines connected by a sea glass bracelet, reshaped by time and circumstance. Lauren is a likable protagonist, and her emotional journey is relatable as she leaves behind her successful wedding planning career after the tragic death of her fiancé, Mason. She relocates to an inn in Rodanthe, where she begins to heal and find new purpose during the inn’s renovations. The novel leans heavily into familiar romantic tropes, making it predictable. The 'signs from the universe' that Lauren experiences feel a bit over-the-top, almost contrived, which may be off-putting for some readers. I am a huge fan of the Outer Banks so the author's descriptions of Rodanthe really helped.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Jenny Hale’s latest heartfelt book, The Magic of Sea Glass, will sweep you away to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Lauren is a widow who once owned a wedding event planning business with her best friend, Andy. When tragedy strikes, and she loses her husband, Mason, in a head-on collision, she decides to sell her half of the business to Andy and take a job as an innkeepers’ assistant on the Outer Banks! When Lauren is gifted a sea glass bracelet as a welcoming gift by her boss, what will she ultimately discover in the end? Will this give her the fresh start that she is looking for?

I loved the characters, the connections that were made in the story, and how the men in the story showed kindness, empathy and understanding towards Lauren!

A wonderful story of love, loss, hope, and second chances that will leave you feeling satisfied in the end. Jenny Hale’s books are always a must read as they are always well written, fun, entertaining, and hopeful.

This was a very interesting book about a woman who owns a wedding planning company with her best friend. Unfortunately, her fiancé died last year and she does not feel happy anymore. She does not feel like celebrating with brides who use her service. So she decides to sell her part of the company and move from New York to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. There, she meets some wonderful people who help her find her way after the death of her fiancé.

I had only read one book by Jenny Hale before this — “The Summer House” — but liked it so much that when our library system did not have any others by her, I bought several from Amazon. That is how much I enjoyed “The Summer House”.

“The Magic of Sea Glass” did not disappoint. I enjoy her writing style, her realistic characters with realistic life experiences and some really good surprise plot twists.

Part of the story refers to people who have died sending “messages” or giving “signs” to us. I have experienced those things with most of the people I have lost throughout my life. The day I decided to start this book, mostly because I love sea glass — both as jewelry and to collect individual pieces — happened to be the one year anniversary of the death of someone I cared about very much and had for over 30 years. When I opened the book, I found the dedication reads: “For all those who have lost someone special.”

I liked the story all the more because the main character was dealing with grief a year after her loss, trying to adjust to her new normal — and collected sea glass — and good new friends who helped her heal — along the way.

A sweet romance story that comes from heartache and loss and learning to let go. It's OK to be happy after

Lauren lost her husband Mason a year ago tragically. She is a wedding event planner and darn good at her job but she is realizing that she needs a break and to get away. She goes to Rodanthe, North Carolina to the Tide and Swallow in to help Mary run it. There she meets Brody, who will slowly get her to open up, and meet some amazing people. Brody has known Mary since he was little and helps her our often around the Inn.

Will Lauren learn to live her life and find joy again? Or will she live in regret and wonder?
