This book left a mark on me—one I know will stay for a long time. The Shadow of the Wind is a beautiful mix of mystery, romance, tragedy, and suspense. I remember getting completely lost in its world, flipping through pages late into the night. There’s a line from Julián Carax that stuck with me: “Books are mirrors: you only see in them what you already have inside you.” That line sums up the magic of this story perfectly. It’s the kind of book you want to press into your friend’s hands and say, “You have to read this.”

The first time I read The Shadow of the Wind in 2016, I found the book to be exciting and mysterious. After visiting Barcelona, where the book is set, I wanted to re-read this worldwide #bestselling novel again and I’m so glad I did!

Thank you @tandemcollectiveglobal & @penguinpress for a wonderful and engaging experience! I started this on audio which was perfect as a re-read, especially with the Spanish accent of the narrator, physically being in Spain and being familiar with Barcelona & Spain.

I got so much more out of this book the second time through as I understood the history depicted and many of the customs and culture. I recognized the different historical figures as well as the locations mentioned throughout the book, several of which I’ve visited! I recalled much of the story but this time listening & reading (when I got home), I felt more connected for all the reasons previously stated but also being older with life experiences. I really loved this book and I may read it for a 3rd time someday especially now that I know there are more books in the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series!

This is a weighty, wordy read, and I don't mean wordy in a negative way. It is a slow burn. The story building, the level of detail were all incredible. Such a powerful story.

A labyrinth of passageways and crammed bookshelves rose from base to pinnacle like a beehive, woven with tunnels, steps, platforms and bridges that presaged an immense library of seemingly impossible geometry. I looked at my father, stunned. He smiled at me and winked.

After rereading, still 5 stars, although I no longer have the patience for fiction that I had over 10 years ago. Amazement at a cleverly-crafted story never dies, I guess.
