Skymar #2

Positively, Penelope

Rate this book
In this sweet, low-spice rom-com, an eternally sunshiny woman attempts to pull a hardened grump out of the shadows and find love again within a fun musical theater backdrop.

The world could do with a little more kindness and positivity and random acts of singing, don't you think?

Dear Reader,

My name is Penelope, and while I may not be a real-life princess, I've been told I possess a certain fairy-tale heroine quality. I wield optimism as my weapon of choice, don amazing shoes and vintage hats whenever possible, and speak in musical references. All of which perfectly qualifies me to succeed in my new role as a marketing intern at the historic Darling House theater on the island of Skymar.

Only . . . it seems this internship position is going to be a LOT bigger than I thought. The Gray family, who owns the theater, has been stuck in a rut of darkness ever since the loss of their matriarchs. Now all that's left is a dying theater, a reclusive grandfather, three siblings, and an adorable seven-year-old girl who desperately needs some pixie-dust magic.

So that's what this story is about. My plans to save the theater! (Plans that, somehow, keep being stolen by a local competitor.) And an anonymous online theater troupe. And two single brothers who may be vying for this American girl's heart . . . until they're not (or maybe they just want me for my ideas too). And a dream job offer that will require me to make a truly heart-wrenching decision. I may not excel at finishing stories, but I promise to see this one through to its happily ever after.

Positively,

Penelope

Positively, Penelope is the escape you've been looking for--in a world of cynics, Penelope can't help but be a ray of positivity. Witty, hilarious, and heartwarming, this sweet, kisses-only epistolary novel is told mostly through emails and texts and is set in the same world as Authentically, Izzy, but can be read as a stand-alone. Don't wait to lose yourself in the world of Positively, Penelope, perfect for readers of Sarah Adams and Emma St. Clair.

"What do you get when you combine a lovable heroine with characters who have mastered the art of witty banter? A charming read." --Sheila Roberts, USA TODAY bestselling author

In a Nutshell: Quite similar to the first book of the series, in both good points and the not-so-good points. I liked the first one better for the bookish bits. A fun read, if you are okay with the never-ending emails and postscripts, and with the repeat of the formula from Book One.

Story Synopsis:
The youngest Edgewood sibling, twenty-three-year-old Penelope, has just landed on the beautiful island of Skymar for a three-month internship with the local Darling House Theatre. As a lover of musicals, she brings with her boundless energy and a tendency to burst into song, both of which are somewhat unnerving to the serious theatre owner, Matt Gray, though his brother Alec seems fascinated by the American whirlwind.
Penelope starts her venture with her whole heart, but deep within, she longs to be taken seriously, as most people around her seem to focus only on her clothes and her chirpiness instead of on her brain. To add to her woes, someone is stealing her marketing ideas. The only moral support she has locally, other than her dear family back at home, are Matt’s seven-year-old daughter Iris, and a mysterious GK - an online friend who is helping her resurrect the theatre. Will Penelope’s endless positivity be enough to sustain her spirits and get Darling House back on track?
The book comes to us mostly through various emails and text messages, exchanged across the Edgewood siblings (Penelope, Izzy, Josephine and Luke all reprising their roles from the first book), the online theatre group that GK and Penelope are a part of, and the Gray family.

You might get a sense of déjà vu from my review, because many of the points I have to cover here are the same as my feedback for the first book of this series, ‘Authentically Izzy’. The two books make a perfect pair in terms of vibe, storyline, characters, and writing.

Bookish Yays:
😍 Penelope is a tough character to get right. She is THIS close to being over the top, what with her constant bubbliness, her habit of filling her messages with exclamation marks (and even CAPS at times), and her obsession with musicals. (She is also crazy about Julie Andrews, but I totally get that!) Her personality seemed to combine traits of Marianne (from Jane Austen’s ‘Sense and Sensibility’), Rebecca (from the Shopaholic series), and Giselle (from the movie ‘Enchanted’.) Why I still like Penelope is because of how the author wrote her with depth. She is considered an airhead by many other characters just because of her fondness for trivialities such as fashion and musicals, but she has brains and a keen understanding of character. She isn’t just a ‘spoonful of sugar’ but a barrelful of sugar accompanied with an equal amount of spice. Rarely do I love a character who has barely anything in common with me, but in this case, I did.

😍 The Edgewood sibling bond is evident even in this book, though the focus of the email interactions isn’t as focussed on them as the first time around. Josephine, Luke and Izzy still have the same strong personalities as they displayed in ‘Authentically Izzy’. I liked how the author didn’t give them any character makeovers but retained their spirit.

😍 Of the new characters, the most impactful are clearly Matt (loved his full name – Matthias! What a welcome change from the more typical Matthew!) and his little daughter Iris. Matt begins as the typical grump whose ice melts under the sunshine that is Penelope. But the reasons for his reserved nature is nicely sketched in the plot, unlike most romcoms where we don’t even know why the MMC acts so standoffish. Iris is the sweetest child, and I wish there had been more on her on page. The little we see of her is enough to show that she is a doll! The father-daughter connection between Matt and Iris is adorable.

😍 For a romcom with such a “positive” lead character, the book covers some intense themes such as grief, heartbreak, and childhood trauma. What I especially appreciate was how these were inserted naturally in the plot without them feeling like some kind of social agenda.

😍 Skymar still doesn’t seem fictional. (I think it is based on the Skye island in Scotland.) The portrayal of its natural features combined with its architectural landmarks and cultural heritage makes me wish it were an actual place.

😍 This time, I was prepared for the book to have Christian elements. Just as in the first book, I appreciated this kind of approach to Christian fiction, where faith is not imposed on readers through biblical verses and fire-and-brimstone homilies, but is a routine part of the characters’ conversation. Penelope also remarks on various ritualistic ideas such as going to mass and saying prayers in a practical manner. One thing I wasn’t prepared for, but I adored, is the inclusion of a divorced single dad as the main character. (I can see over-conservative believers protesting against such a character in this genre, but to me, these elements were a glorious depiction of true Christianity – accepting and non-judgemental.)

😍 The above obviously ensures that the romance is clean, except for a few kisses in the final quarter. (Penelope has a great rationale for kisses being acceptable in God’s eyes – I couldn’t help but laugh at her research!)

Bookish Mixed Bags:
😐 The writing pattern is the same as the first book, so my experience is the same. The book begins with a barrage of emails across various characters, and after about one-third, it shifts to a mix of email communication and third-person narrative. I enjoyed the combo approach better, as the emails, with their overabundant PS and PPS and PPPS add-ons, began getting on my nerves after a while.

😐 One factor that I truly missed from the first book was its focus on books, courtesy Izzy’s work as a librarian and her passion for bookish quotes. This time around, Penelope is a theatre and musical lover, so all her character makes plenty of references to musicals. Thankfully, my knowledge of old Hollywood musicals is pretty strong, so the mentions of favourite movies such as ‘The Sound of Music’ and of stars like Gene Kelly and Julie Andrews made me nostalgic. But I have not seen ‘My Fair Lady’ (I know, I know!!!), so those trivia went above my head. I am not sure how these elements would work with any reader who isn’t so aware of old musicals.

Bookish Nays:
😒 Again, I find it unbelievable that family members would exchange so many emails in 2023. Of course, it is a tad more sensible this time because of the time and location difference. But seriously, don’t US residents use WhatsApp for family chats? (If my family members start emailing me so frequently and in such length, I’ll block them!)

😒 At 410+ pages, this is quite lengthy for the romcom genre. Thankfully, I was more prepared for the writing style this time, so I didn’t take as long to read the book. But many of the plot points could have been crisper.

😒 The love triangle, which was barely there tbh, was a dud even this time. As I have mentioned before, triangles make sense only when we feel the tug between the two competing characters. But when the resolution of the triangle is clear from the very first start, it is pointless and boring.

😒 The mystery of who is stealing Penelope's marketing ideas is not at all hard to guess. The clues are quite obvious, so it is tiresome to wait for the characters to realise what you already know.

😒 I think the book went a bit overboard on the fairy tale elements. A few plot developments seem to occur just to give Penelope an opportunity to depict her passion for fairy tales (and her obsession with occasion-appropriate fashion), even when they didn’t fit into the natural flow of the story.

All in all, despite the few issues I had, I enjoyed this story *almost* as much as the first book. The approach is quite similar, but Izzy’s bookish introversion made me connect more to her than Penelope’s bombastic positivity and fashion-passion. Still, the story is as promised, and will work nicely for a light read, as long as you are prepared for the epistolary style.

Though the two books are sequential, they work well as a standalone. But being the series freak that I am, I would obviously recommend you read both the books in the right order, as you get a wonderful introduction to the Edgewoods in the first book.

The third book is already in the works, and it will be focussed on Luke, who is the most sensible and sarcastic of the siblings. Considering my fondness for all things pragmatic, I can’t wait to see what awaits Mr. Logical Luke in the next work. The ending of this book has already laid the groundwork for his story.

3.75 stars. (Same official rating as the first book, but it’s more like 3.8 for that one and 3.7 for this one.)

My thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the DRC of “Positively, Penelope”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Such a refreshingly fun and romantic story!

I enjoyed this book as much as I did the first installment of the series (Authentically, Izzy). This is also written mainly as an epistolary novel with texts, letters, emails, chats, etc. I appreciated with this novel, as with the first, that the written messages were realistic and not just long info dumps.

I adored Penelope, who has traveled to island of Skymar for an internship in the theater. She soon comes to realize that the theater is in trouble, both financially and because the two brothers, Alec and Matt, who run it, do not agree about anything. Penelope loves movies, theater, and has a deep adoration for all things magical and romantic. She wants to help save it, but there are so many things against them.

This novel is engaging from the first page and Penelope's jubilant, quirky personality is infectious. There's a bit of mystery (who is GK, the person with whom Penelope has been corresponding?), lots of singing, and captivating banter between all of the characters. There is a great deal of humor, but some very poignant and faith filled moments to balance out the lighter ones. The overarching theme of dealing with grief hit home so squarely with me, and the author's words brought tears to my eyes more than once. I know that the author has had some deep grief of her own and the way she conveys it on the page elevated this book for me beyond the usual rom-com.

What a lovely book, and I cannot wait for Luke's story! Mr. Cynical better watch out!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

I loved everything about this Penelope book. The island setting. The storytelling in emails and text messages. The characters--especially Penelope herself. Classic movie references. The dancing! Highly recommend this series and looking forward to a book about the irrepressible Luke.

This book feels like a continuation of the first book, Authentically Izzy, and was a four star for me until the last part of the story when suspense kicks up a notch and ends on such a sweet note that I decided on five stars. It is told in the same format as the first one with of lots of emails and texts, in the epistolary form. We see the same humor and wit between siblings/cousins, Penelope, Izzy, Luke, and sometimes Josie. What fun they have with banter and teasing, all interspersed with love! Penelope is doing an internship in Skymar, home of Izzy's boyfriend, Brodie, following her college completion. Sunny personality Penelope meets grumpy Matt Gray at the airport, but things get better the more that the two are together. She makes a special bond with Matt's sweet little daughter, Iris. She is working with the Gray family to revitalize their theatre, The Darling House and finds such history and special love in the artifacts and memories. She does a wonderful job and wins the hearts of the family and community. Filled with movie quotes and references, this is another fun and uplifting read. I am looking forward to reading Luke's story.
I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.

PERFECTLY MAGICAL IN EVERY WAY. 5 STARS. LOVE THIS SERIES - SUCH GREAT COMFORT READS! I have to say, these characters make these stories. Authentically, Izzy is one of my favorites books of all time and this sequel did NOT disappoint ya'll! This series is just a good time all around and an ultimate comfort to me. Bonus points here for the movie and theater lovers -as this has all the PERFECT classic movie vibes with Julie Andrews, The Sound of Music, Grease, Cinderella, Rambo and so much more! Perfect princess vibes - yes please! THANK YOU PEPPER for the most magical stories.

Positively, Penelope follows Penelope Edgewood - you would have seen her and her siblings, Luke and Josephine in Authentically, Izzy and they're just a GREAT time! Told in e-mails and text messages, plus the traditional narrative story, we follow Penelope as she travels to Skymar for 3 months to be an intern at one of the most historical theaters on the island. She works with Matt Gray, the business manager of the theater, plus we see his daughter, Iris, Grandfather Gray, brother, Alec and sister, Gwynn. Together they make up this century old theater group that is in desperate need of saving. That's where Penelope comes in! Her marketing skills and experience are going to be put to the test as they work to save this theater.

We get to see messages from primarily Izzy and Luke, with some from Josephine as well. Loved all of these great conversations. I can't wait to listen to the audiobook because the narrators will be the same as Authentically, Izzy and they are WONDERFUL! They truly bring these conversations to life!

Like I said, what makes this story is our wonderful cast of characters! Penelope is so wonderful! She is positive, kind, generous, full of sunshine and a genuine heart! Then we have this grumpy-sunshine guy - Matt - who I LOVED! He has been through such hardship with his divorce and the loss of his mother and grandmother - he doesn't know how to begin again....until he meets Penelope. :) I LOVED the relationship between them and Iris too - Iris was so precious! I loved a good story with a single Dad trying to make his way who can find love again - SIGN ME UP!

I hope you all will pick this book up - as if I haven't sold you enough :) - it truly made me happy and feel like a princess would. :) What a magical place - to be in Skymar. I am so ready for Luke's story! If you love theater, movies, fairytales and just feel good stories - this is for YOU!

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for a copy to honestly read and review. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book is a positive delight from the first line to the last. I adored Penelope in Izzy's book and she screamed for her own book, so I couldn't wait to dive into the pages of this novel. On my goodness, it was a true, laugh out loud joy to read this book. The story was filled with twists and hiccups, but there was such delight and fun. And fairy tales. And princesses. And Julie Andrews. Gene Kelly. All the things I adore. In one place. And such fun. And the kissing. Pepper does enjoy writing kissing books. I highly recommend this sweet, fun, romantic romp of a book. It was wonderful!

😀 the audiobook is delightful.

If Enchanted and Legally Blonde had a musical theater inspired foreign island mash-up packed with hope, joy, faith, and yes, positivity, it would be this story. Often underestimated due to her cheerful princess-like personality, Penelope's journey hit me square in the heart. A bit of mystery, a celebration of history, more songs than you can shake a stick at, bicycling, twirling, decedent baked goods, and much, much more make this book one that will exceed expectations in the best, most inspiring, and deeply encouraging fashion (oh yes, can't forget the fashion!) I highly recommend this story and its sister story Authentically, Izzy and eagerly anticipate the next Mt. Airy meets Skymar adventure (aka romance but don't tell Luke)!

A super cute little story about a sunshine/ grumpy romance set in a picturesque fictional country that I really wish actually existed. Penelope's character was a delight to read about as you usually don't see a sunshine character like this as the main character. Her personality is a combination of Holly Golightly, Maria Von Trap, and Elle Woods. I think the author wrote her character brilliantly as it comes across well in Penelope's emails, with her being super excitable but also somewhat distracted by not relaying a full story at one time. I found her charming and, as an avid baker myself, felt a connection with her by all of her creations throughout the book--it really made me want to try to make some of them myself! Penelope also carries around a Mary Poppins bag that truly seems to have everything you could need in it, which I thought was a lovely aspect of her character.

I also enjoyed reading about Matt (Matthias--loved the name!). He is the grumpy part of the duo but he never came across as rude, more cautious. He had some depth of character with heartbreak in his past and as a single father of the adorable Iris. It was lovely to see him slowly melting, bringing down his protective barriers to let Peneople in to bring happiness and lightness back into his life. Also, I have to say, I wish I could see him dance in real life!

As for the plot, it was a bit more of a character driven story and followed a similar story line to this book's predecessor, Authentically Izzy (an American girl comes to revitalize a dying business integral to the community by creating a social media presence and infusing the place with fresh ideas.) With Penelope's story, however, a villain is introduced who is trying to wreck all her plans and sabotage the theater's progress. I could see this being made into a rom com movie.

There was a scene at the end that felt out of place. The reader was focusing on the love story and what happened with Matt and Izzy and then the book jarringly switches to a text conversation between Izzy and Josephine.

This book, just like Authentically Izzy, is an epistilary novel, which I know some people have trouble with, but I truly recommend the audiobook as it helps I lot.

This book has tons of movie and theater references and I admit some of them were lost on me as I am not as familiar with the theater world.

From a Christian perspective, I did notice a couple of things that made me question their presence in a Christian book. 1) When Penelope is describing how to deal with grief, she says that she prays, but "knows that isn't for everyone". I'm not sure if the author meant this by how I took it, which is praying helps some people but not everybody-- I have a big problem with that line of thinking. Prayer is a powerful thing and should be something we always strive to do. It is true that not everyone is a Christian but Christians should model praying and unbelievers can certainly be impacted to potentially become believers because of another's prayers. I just think that this statement could have been worded better. 2) There is a one sentence statement about Josephine (Penelope's sister) taking her twins to baby yoga. I'm not sure if Josephine was partaking in Yoga herself Or if the babies were just being stretched Into yoga positions. But yoga is not something that Christians should participate in-- it is a Hindu practice and promotes seeking comfort and answers within yourself instead of through God. I think authors should be more careful about not using yoga in their books. Both of these things were mentioned about ninety percent into the book so I kept reading, but it colored my opinion of the book.

Content warnings: grief (loss of parent, loss of grandparent), infidelity

Christian faith rating: 1/3 I would say this book leans more towards clean fiction on the christian fiction spectrum.

POSITIVELY, PENELOPE is an epistolary novel that re-introduces the reader to Penelope. We got to know her pretty well in the first book, Authentically Izzy, but now we learn even more. Penelope travels to Skymar to work for three months at a historical theatre on the island. Penelope has experience in marketing and they are hoping she can come up with a plan to save the theatre. POSITIVELY PENELOPE is filled with twists and turns that will have you laughing out loud! When Penelope meets Matt her life changes no matter how grumpy he always seems to be. He is a single dad to Iris and isn’t interested in A relationship as he has had his heart broken in the past. That’s all I’m saying!

POSITIVELY, PENELOPE is exactly why I love Pepper Basham’s books. She always leaves me with a big smile on my face and screaming for more. That’s how wrapped up I get into her writing. Pepper has become one of my very favorite go to authors and I devour her books like a fine box of chocolates. I try to take my time and read slowly to make it last, but usually half way through I lose all control and flip the pages like a mad woman!! Penelope also loves to bake which made me love her that much more!

Pepper Basham has once again left me in tears and crying for more. I now know I will devour everything this awesome author writes and do it all easily with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. I really loved POSITIVELY, PENELOPE Wow wow wow!! From the very first page I was emotionally invested in all of these wonderful people. Please, you have to give Pepper Basham a try! You won’t be sorry. I can’t wait to read more by one of my very favorite authors. I have made it a quest to catch up on the rest of her books because her writing is just that good. She makes her readers feel every emotion her characters are feeling to the point where you feel as if you are right there, struggling along with them. Now we have to patiently wait for Luke’s book!

Ahhhh, one of my favourite trios is back!! I didn’t think it was possible after loving Izzy’s story so much, but I loved Penelope’s story even more!

From the prologue alone, I was grinning like crazy. In fact, the entire book had me laughing so hard that a couple family members checked in to make sure I was okay. Just peachy & reading top-notch humour. Seriously, if you need a spoonful of sugar & laughter — read this book!

A few of my favourite highlights being…

✨ The humour
✨ The classic movie references
✨ “Did you just turn Chris Pine into an adjective?”
✨ Alllll the Julie Andrews’ references
✨ Luke in protective big brother mode & showing up for Penelope. (And just Luke in general, haha!)
✨ Grumpy-Sunshine
✨ Iris!
✨ Penelope’s “Mary Poppins” bag… this is so me 😂
✨ Matt calling Penelope, “the pixie”
✨ No love triangles, miscommunications, or third act breakups!

But for all the laughs, it wasn’t fluffy or mindless. It was heartfelt with a giggle — amusing and yet woven together with deep, thoughtful themes. It’s a story about friendship, community, family & belonging, dealing with grief, and the meaning of true love (being that you shouldn’t have to change yourself to make yourself acceptable to others). And of course, the power of a little “magic.” 😉

All I can say is that I loved every minute of this book, it gave me a dose of laughter & sunshine just when I needed it, and I cannot wait for Luke’s story next! 😍

*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.

Happy Release Day! Heartwarming, charming, Entertaining Read

I recently finished reading a heartwarming and genuinely delightful book. The plot follows the story of Penelope, a kind and generous person who exudes positivity, and Matt, a single father struggling to start over and can be a bit grumpy at times.

Fresh out of college, Penelope jumps at the opportunity to assist in the restoration of a century-old theater on the picturesque island of Skymar, where she believes her passion for vintage items and love for the stage will be a perfect fit. Unfortunately, things are not as they seem at Darling House Theatre. The financial situation is in disarray, the local theater group is disheartened, and the Gray brothers, Matt and Alec, cannot agree on how to manage their theatrical enterprise. Nevertheless, Penelope sees this as an opportunity to showcase her unique and positive outlook.

The story is presented through a mix of letters, text messages, and emails, with plenty of hilarious moments, particularly between the siblings and their inside jokes. Despite the unexpected twists and hiccups, the story remains enjoyable and fun, with plenty of romance and kissing scenes. Overall, I highly recommend this clean and sweet romance book to anyone looking for a good time. Additionally, I can't wait for Luke to get his own book. It was a wonderful read!

I would like to express my gratitude to Netgalley and the Publisher for providing me with the eARC. Please note that all opinions shared are solely mine.

I started reading Positively, Penelope when I was offered the copy. I did not want to read it so far from the expected publication date, but I could not stop thinking about the characters. The Edgewood family enchants me, and I smile when reading these books.

Penelope Edgewood is in love with the theater. She has Cinderella, Princess, and Mary Poppins vibes down to her very being. When Penelope is offered a chance to work with the Skymarian Theater, she jumps in with both feet. She works closely with Mattias or Matt, the theater manager, along with his sister, Gwynn, brother Alec, his Grandfather, and his daughter Iris, who is precious in every way. Penelope soon finds that the theater is failing financially, and she gets to help the others save this theater.

Positively, Penelope is written in an epistolary style for most of the book, making the story so much fuller. I smiled so much at the conversations between Penelope, Izzy, and Luke. I urge you to snatch up this book immediately, as Penelope will surely bring you joy.

I ended up reading this book in one sitting which tells you how much I enjoyed it! I did not realize that this was number two in a series but did not feel like I missed a ton by not reading book 1.

Penelope has accepted an internship to help revitalize a small town theater on the other side of the world from her hometown in the Appalachian mountains. Her goal is to bring up their marketing to help increase sales and help the theater survive. Enter Matt and Alec Gray- her "bosses." Matt is Mr. Grump, and Alec is Mr. Sauve. Penelope's character reminded me of Giselle from Enchanted. She is UBER positive, randomly breaks out into song, and legit can't see negative in anything. She ends up breaking Matt by introducing his daughter to princesses and that love can be hard but is WORTH it.

The prose in this book is different than anything I have read before. It is mostly in text messages and emails. The banter between Penelope and her sisters and brother was laugh out loud funny to me. Eventually towards the middle of the book, we end up getting real life perspectives from Penelope and Matt.

This was an extremely light hearted, zero spice, grumpy to sunshine book that I really enjoyed. I found myself smiling throughout the conversations because of how real it felt. I am looking forward to reading Penelope's brother Luke's book which is next in the series. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

3.5 ⭐

I loved the larger-than-life character of Penelope and the sincerity and sweetness of the male lead, Matthias.

One thing that brought it down for me quite a bit was that the themes in this book - about positivity and optimism etc - were really hammered home. It was too much tell and not enough show. Penelope's character was big enough, her actions could have spoken for her. Too much was said, maybe not in the narration, but in the dialogue, which made it feel .... preachy isn't quite the right word, but that's the best I've got. And I don't usually feel that way about Pepper Basham's work, so I was a little surprised by that.

There were also parts of the ending that I felt were either rushed or just unbelievable, or maybe just convenient.

BUT it was a fun read, I enjoyed it, and am looking forward to the third installment whenever I get around to it! I recommend it as a fun rom-com with an epistolary twist, and lots of musical references.

Well this just about broke the Swoon Scale™️. Oh my word, did Ms. Basham just give everything here.

Will you check out this trope combo:
Jaded grumpy hero/Optimism avalanche sunshine heroine
Single dad (just the right amount of cute child presence)
Workplace forced proximity with lots of competence
Bit of an age gap
He falls first and a smidge of grovel
The only acceptable kind of quasi-love triangle: the Clear Winner love triangle
And of course, predominant presence of wonderful bantery written communications.

Much like with the first book, even as an epistolary fan, it took me a minute to settle in, and, especially in this story, I was wondering how the written communication format would work to keep us invested in this scenario (our grump meet-cute was told not shown *miffed*). But, never fear, a third person dual POV enters just when we need it, and it’s all systems go, so effective. Really applaud all the pacing/format choices and by that third act when Grumpy Gray is already all in and we have reveals, rescues, declarations, grand gestures and reunions, I repeat, optimum swoonage.

Because this is the kind of life-affirming swoony romance progression where you can see exactly where it’s going, love to see it coming and rejoice when it so-satisfyingly arrives. Isn’t that the heart-tinglingly steady predictability us romance readers yearn for? But then it also exceeds your expectations as you’re bombarded left and right with a very special brand of grump-goes-Gene-Kelly charm in a dreamy Northern European landscape. I’m serious, friends, we have a brokenhearted accountant/dance teacher hero with impressive eyebrows on our hands, ok?

And Penelope is all gotta-love-her, generally oblivious, charming chaos, with her often-rambling, incomplete narrative emails, her dreamy outlook, but with all the creativity and know-how to back it up. She literally barrels into this theater family and community’s life and learns you can have both what you dream and what you need, looking fabulous and quoting Audrey Hepburn as you achieve it.

The Edgewoods are everything and more. Luke’s up, I’m so ready.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC.

Content notes: kissing only, unresolved grief, mention of infidelity and familial abandonment.

With many laugh-out-loud moments, readers will find Positively, Penelope is practically perfect in every way. This was just what I needed. A book that is filled with so many wonderfully delectable musical references and a heroine that couldn't help but insert her way into this reader's heart. Penelope has all of the positivity of Anne Shirley, yet a passion for musical theater instead of literature.

Ms. Basham has written another sweet romance with a delightful cast of characters, and an interesting plot that will keep readers entertained from the first to the last page. (I made sure I mentioned romance first, because Ms. Basham definitely writes what she personally calls 'kissing' books. Yet she definitely focuses on the sweetness of the romance that goes before the kiss, the courting and winning of hearts.)

Told partially as an epistolary, readers will hear Penelope's and the whole Edgewood families' voice through texts and emails. This was a wonderful window into the Edgewood family dynamics. Yet I also enjoyed the story as it digressed from this format as well, allowing us to follow the plot or see another character's POV. Within the pages lurks a fantastic story of family and forgiveness, a story of finding joy and looking to the future with hope.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher through Netgalley. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

This book has a whole bunch of smiling feel good moments in it. This is in epistolary format so lots of emails and texts which I enjoy but can kind of distract me but thankfully there are regular chapters sprinkled in through out the book.

Penelope gets the opportunity to try and help save The Darling House, a theater company in an out of a fairytale town with castles and white horses and very fancy sounding names. She’s all sunshine all the time. Then there’s the Gray brothers, Alec and Matt. Alec is the flakey but super sweet and easy to be around brother and Matt is the divorced and jaded single dad of an adorable girl named Iris. The singling relationship between Penelope, Izzy and Luke is funny, their banter is very realistic and their inside jokes are up to par.

Can Penelope wear down the tough exterior armor of Matt or will she fall into the arms of Alec who has always made being around him so easy? Will we ever find out with GK is exactly??

This is a slow burn novel that will make you smile and laugh, it’s a feel good book about learning to love.

Thank you to @TNZFiction @pepperbasham @TLCBookTours for #gifting me a copy to read and review!

Positively, Penelope is an absolutely charming book! This heartwarming romcom is told mostly through emails and texts, a format that I adore! Penelope and Matt are the stars here—she is joyful, fairy-tale-believing, oftentimes singing; he is serious and guarded. She has been hired to help his family’s struggling theater, and it was a delight to watch Penelope work her magic with not only the theater, but also with Matt! Watching their romance unfold was romantic and inspirational and fun!! The setting of this book is unique, the characters are (mostly) enchanting, and I loved every moment.

Story Enjoyment Rating: 9/10 Christian Faith Rating 2/3

I loved this contemporary romance. In this book, we are introduced to Penelope, an optimistic and upbeat character who adores Julie Andrews. And Matt, a man grappling with the wounds of his past, including a painful divorce and bereavement. The plot centers on a struggling theatre that needs saving, mirroring Matt’s own need for healing. Penelope, with her refreshing outlook on life, brings a new dynamic, though she herself is still growing and learning.

The story explores whether these two characters can learn to trust and love. I enjoyed the use of the varied accents in the audiobook. The romance was swoon-worthy — it gave me a little of the beauty-and-the-beast-feels at the beginning. This was a grumpy/sunshine romance done well. I enjoyed this second book even more than the first.

There was some faith content. It was clear that the characters were Christians. I felt like Penelope was a younger Christian, maybe near the beginning of her faith journey and still learning.

I recently finished reading (listening to) Authentically, Izzy, book one of the Skymar series, and it was delightful. I was so excited to dive into Positively, Penelope after getting to know Penelope throughout the first book as she offered encouragement and positivity to her cousin, Izzy. I hoped that this book would live up to the fun and romantic atmosphere created in that first novel. Well, I was thrilled to find a story that I loved even more than the first!

Positively, Penelope was the perfect blend of epistolary and in person dialogue. The swoon factor was there in spades, with a grumpy and heartbroken single dad hero, a sweet daughter, and the delightful Penelope who was able to weave her uplifting spirit and love for all things theater into the entire Gray family.

I simply adored this story from start to finish and I must now wrap my mind around the fact that it will be so long until book three, Loyally, Luke, is released next year! It will be a very hard wait!

I believe that readers could pick up Positively, Penelope and enjoy it even if they haven’t read Authentically, Izzy. So, if you are really wanting to dive into this book without having read book one, go ahead, you should be fine. I, however, love reading book series in order when I can. I do think that it is fun to get to know Penelope, Luke, Izzy, and even Josephine through the emails and texts of Authentically, Izzy first. Then enjoy seeing Penelope get a truly swoon worthy happily ever after in this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Positively, Penelope is such a fun book to read. I positively enjoyed it. Penelope is a delight with so much love and happiness to share. The Grumpy/Sunshine trope is one of my favorites. The author uses email and text messages in an "epistolary" style to convey the story through much of the book. Penelope is tasked as an intern to turn around an old theater on a fictional island near England. She meets the grumpy but handsome Matt. I won't go into detail, but Penelope does a fantastic job of earning everyone's respect and admiration in her job. There is mystery and romance with fun loving characters. As well as a precious little girl who claims Penelope's heart. I recommend to anyone who is looking for an easy, light and fun read to escape into.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious awesomeness! I adored this book! It was everything my romantic, musical loving heart could ever want. Pepper Basham delivers a delightful, magical, feel good, grumpy/sunshine romance with endearing characters, witty humor, all the favorite musical/pop culture references, and even a hint of mystery. Like with Authentically, Izzy I absolutely fell in love with Positively, Penelope.

Penelope Edgewood’s talents are put to the test when she accepts a 3 month internship in Skymar to revive the old Darling House Theater. Armed with a sunny disposition, creative solutions, a Mary Poppins bag full of amazing things, and the support of her lovable siblings/cousin, she begins tackling the theater’s problems. Soon her cheerful positivity and love for the theater affect everyone around her including her grumpy business manager Matt Gray. But, not everyone is happy with the changes Penelope’s making. Someone is out to sabotage her and the theater. It’s going to take Penelope’s unconditional love and know how to pull off a miracle and save the theater.

All the love for this book! I adored Penelope and Matthias! In Authentically, Izzy, Penelope came off as a bit naive and we didn’t get to see the full facet of her personality. In this story, she really shines and we see her depth and the true kindness she possesses. Penelope chooses joy and her example affects everyone around her. She’s a breath of fresh air and it was pure delight reading her story.

The flip side of the coin is Matt or “Matthias.” This lovable grump has been through a lot in the past few years. Unfortunately, he’s temporarily lost his joy and mistakenly bans fairytales and princesses from his young daughter Iris’ life. Penelope brings back the magic with singing, baking, and watching “almost” princess movies like Tangled with Iris. When he sees the happiness she brings to not only his life but everyone around her, he begins to rethink his grumpy ways. I loved their romance with him teaching Penelope how to ride a bike, dancing in the theater, and his sacrifices.

Told mostly in epistolary form, I enjoyed reading the witty, heartfelt, sometimes snarky (Luke) emails and texts. All the Edgewood relatives’ personalities really shine and you can’t help loving them all. It was especially fun to see a new side to Luke and I can’t wait for his story! I thoroughly enjoyed new characters introduced like Grandpa Gray and Gwendolyn. I loved all the musical references and the quotes from Julie Andrews and Audrey Hepburn. I also loved the message of choosing joy. Even the villain has a story and manages to tug on your heartstrings.

You can’t help but smile while reading this story and I guarantee you’ll find yourself singing those amazing show tunes from Phantom of the Opera to My Fair Lady! Highest of recommendations for this exceptionally, practically perfect, clean romance! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily given.

Positively, Penelope is the second book in the Skymar series, but I believe it could read just fine as a standalone.

I have to be completely honest... it took me a WHILE to get into this story. Seriously. I would start, read a bit, find myself unable to get into it, put it down and come back later to try again. That's pretty unusual for me in general, but particularly when I've really enjoyed Pepper Basham's books in the past. But honestly, there were points where I really wasn't sure I wanted to continue this one... For me, this definitely had little to do with the writing and the story and everything to do with the epistolary form it was written in. While some of my books as a child were written in that same style, I've found as I've gotten older, it's just not one I love as much as I personally find it harder to get into what is happening in the story. And so, it wasn't until around 30% or so into the story when it broke into more of a typical narrative (with emails and text still mixed in as well) that I really found myself drawn into and enjoying the story at last. Once that happened though, I found myself really glad I hadn't given up on it too soon! There were so many moments that had me laughing out loud and I really found myself finally enjoying these characters so much! I loved the text banter and the chemistry between Matt and Penelope was so good. Theater fans will also appreciate all the musical references throughout too. (There was a lot of Julie Andrews love, which was GREAT!)

If you're like me and you aren't sure about this story in the beginning because of the email format, I would highly encourage you to read on... in the end it was definitely worth it to do so! It was certainly a unique story, and one that I really enjoyed in the end!

Penelope is POSITIVELY charming. She’s a character who is full to overflowing with joy and zest for life and reads as a charming and effusive lead. If Authentically Izzy (1st book in the series) is for book-lovers, this is a story for classic-movie-lovers, as Penelope is a true admirer of icons like Audrey Hepburn and Julie Andrews. An admirer such to the point that it is a chief element of her personality.

I really enjoyed the balanced structure of epistolatory style emails and texts alongside narrative story in this sequel. And this book is a true sequel: the reader is thrust right back into the lives of the Edgewood family and the enchanting islands of Skymar that we were introduced to in Authentically Izzy. I loved the continued character building of the brother Luke and the fact that he called his sister “Penny-girl”.

This book focuses a little more on Penelope’s relationship and interaction with her family and seemed to skate over some of the romantic relationship building with her male lead. I found myself looking for a little more to the “happily ever after” of the story as the ending felt a bit condensed and rushed.

A truly enjoyable read! I found myself giggling and smiling to myself throughout the chapters. It would be the perfect book to mix it up if you’re looking for something that’s different in format.

I honestly didn't expect to love Positively, Penelope as much as I loved Authentically, Izzy. But Pepper has outdone herself. Positively, Penelope was positively delightful!

When the heroine carries a Mary Poppins bag and channels her inner Maria von Trapp, you know you're in for a treat. Penelope is one of those perpetually positive people who are not always understood by others. But when she lands on Skymar to help save the Darling Theater, her belief in the healing power of cookies and dancing will endear her to the hearts of the entire Darling family.

But will she find a leading man who is worth giving up her home and family for? Or is it possible that "some of the best characters played the secondary roles"?

If you love musicals, Julie Andrews, or good clean romance with a bit of intrigue, then don't miss this new release in the Skymar series by Pepper Basham.

Pepper Basham has done it again!

Positively, Penelope is a spectacularly sweet sequel to Authentically, Izzy. (If you haven’t read Izzy’s book yet, I recommend you read it first. There are a lot of references to it in Penelope’s book.)

With more wonderfully whimsical characters (Grandpa Gray, Matthias, Iris, and Gwynn…just to name a few), the same fantastic fictional foreign land of Skymar, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments combined with a slow-burn sweet romance, Penelope’s story is “practically perfect!”

I laughed.
I cried.
I loved it!

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5 stars)

And I can’t wait for Ms. Basham to write Luke’s story!

This was a feel-good, epistolary novel told mainly through emails exchanged between her siblings, texts and anonymous letters.

I loved how optimistic and sunny Penelope is - she loves all things Julie Andrews and is determined to help save a beloved family theatre.

Along the way she has to battle with two skeptical brothers, a matchmaker, and a single father's adorable young daughter.

Book two in a series, it still works as a standalone and was really good on audio. I'm excited for the next book featuring Penelope's brother Luke and definitely recommend this one if you enjoyed Authentically, Izzy!

Wow!
This was such an adorable bookkkkkkk! 😄
I cannot count the times I’ve laughed out loud in this book (and if I did, I would feel very embarrassed! So I’ll leave that up to your imagination 😉)
First off, I loved this book a lot more than Authentically, Izzy (the first book in the Skymar series), it had a better plot and the communication was well executed more so than in the first book. I related a little too much to Penelope with her personality but man do I wish I had her boldness!! And OH MY Matt!?!?!? Or Mathias? 🤭 I’m getting butterflies in my stomach just thinking about his love for Penelope! The writing was a lot more digestible and I liked reading more from the third person pov than the emails unlike Authentically Izzy.
However, there was one thing I did not like was how intense the first kissing scene was. Nothing bad, but I don’t like it when a guy puts a hand against the wall behind her kissing her. Is that steamy? Idk 🤷🏼‍♀️ no spice or anything more than semi descriptive kisses but everything in this book was so sweet and pretty innocent except for that part. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to read any Pepper Basham’s books but not sure where to start. I will reread this though at some point! I think I found a new trope I like: grumpy x sunshine!! 😋
