Heat x Beat: A Shut-In Omega Becomes an Idol! by Ken Homerun is an omegaverse, one-shot manga about an omega who is recruited to become part of an idol group. Originally, Minoru Katagiri (our main character), was recruited to become a producer for the idol group, Tyrant, by one of the members themselves. Once Minoru arrives at the company, Hijiri Takao decides that he is to be put in an idol group instead. He has the looks for it, which is difficult for everyone else to see until Minoru is cleaned up. Minoru accepts and is joined by Eiji Nakagawa and Tatsuya Otsuki in the idol group CaleidoScorpio.

Minoru, 18-years-old, had become a shut-in after being abandoned by his fiance Tomatsu Nakagawa. In order to deal with the sadness, he wrote songs which he published on the internet. This is how he attracted Hijiri Takao’s attention, thus bringing him into the idol world. As we find out, Minoru has also lost the ability to have heats because of the trauma he went through by being abandoned. I must say, they did come up with a good enough backstory to explain why Minoru was a shut-in as well as what the trauma from it did to him. I appreciated that even though this is a one-shot, they did make it believable with the amount of space they had.

Minoru meeting the rest of his group members was an interesting event. While Tatsuya was very loud and energetic in his introduction, Eiji surprised everyone by hugging Minoru. Of course, Minoru pushed him away as he had no idea who Eiji was. Neither of them had ever met before, but it does make you suspicious of Eiji. Does he know Minoru? Minoru did seem to know the last name, but had decided that it meant nothing to him.

Eiji and Minoru do grow closer together and they find out that other idols, like ones from Tyrant and B-Marks have relationships with each other, so if they have a relationship it is not too big of a deal. They just cannot let the public know, which makes sense as it is big in the idol culture to not be in actual relationships. A problem does occur when Minoru does find out who Eiji actually is. It does not cause much of an issue as they have gotten close enough to each other that Minoru is fine forgiving it.

This manga is really just a cute story about losing love, but finding a new one. Minoru falling in love with Eiji was better than him falling in love with Tamotsu, in my opinion, because he made the choice to be with Eiji. He did not have the choice to be with Tamotsu, other than Tamotsu choosing to not be with Minoru. Not only that, but Eiji and Minoru are closer in age, which I think helps their relationship grow. Minoru was able to give Tamotsu his birthday gift in the end, which was a song he had been working on before Tamotsu ran away. This gave Minoru his closure, so he could fully be with Eiji with no regrets. If you are looking for a cute one volume manga about idols and omegaverse, I recommend this one. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

This is the side story of Heat x Beat. You could read them back-to-back or this one as a starter piece. Either way, they’re both fantastic introductory works into Ken Homerun’s writing style.

Heat x Beat: Hikikomori would make for a good introduction piece to Omegaverse for younger audiences getting into BL. If you’re a seasoned veteran wanting to read it… it’s a cute story that won’t hurt your feelings, but don’t go in expecting too much spice.

Ken Homerun’s impeccable attention to detail in worldbuilding made this manga a joy to read. Their romance is raw and pure, aided by banter and cute moments. The love interests are green flags and I love that; although the mangaka isn’t afraid to dip their toes into the unsavory side of Omegaverse, as well. It might feel a little “plot convenient,” but if you don’t mind, Heat x Beat is their strongest piece (in my humble opinion).

Who is this manga for
This two-shot is a great choice for manga fans who are looking for an idol drama mixed up with an omegaverse! This is a Ken Homerun manga, so the pacing will be pretty snappy.

This is cute, but a bit shallow/thin. It covers a few different tropes/cliches but doesn't really go into any of them in depth. It also just feels a little too unrealistic and coincidental in the way different story elements are put together. If the MC is such an amazing song-writer, that's no reason to turn him into an idol. Wouldn't he just get recruited as a musician? And the love interest also just miraculously gets placed into the new group with the MC with no prior talent or training?

Overall, a sweet and easy read, but not one for the ages.

I like this one better than the previous book, but I’m glad I read that one first for context. I found the central relationship much more compelling, and the worldbuilding around these guys was also a lot more compelling! I think it also helped that there was less of a “I have to fight against fantasy sexism!!” plotline in this one.

I liked the first volume in this series perfectly alright, and actually enjoyed this one much more. These characters felt much more fleshed out, and the arranged marriage plotline introduced some extra complication that I thought worked quite well for the storyline. All in all, this was a very cute, fun time.

Felt more like a recovery story rather than a romance story since there was only like four pages of romance (romance was more so implied with the whole unrequited love for the brother in law business).

Regardless, it’s still a cute story.

Yeah…this was not great. I was expecting more spice- the first book was uh-mazing but this one was kinda meh. Nothing great nothing horrible, just in the middle and pretty boring. I did like the surprise ending though that was pretty crazy, but otherwise? Bland.

cute cleanser read

I usually read mangas to cleanse my reading palette. This was cute, felt like unnecessary drama but it was a quick read so i guess some type of drama needed to be in it.

yeah I think this is not really up my alley... I have been interested to read more manga and manhwa and stuff since my library app has them now. I'll try a few more most likely but I don't know that it'll be a long term thing

Cute. Simple story. Art was cute. Story was straightforward to the point, not too pornographic. The drama was mid. Quick paced, it's a single volume though.
