I LOVE a messy relationship, especially when it involves an obsessed MC with unresolved emotional issues, so of course, I liked this story. However, it needed to be longer!! The time periods between each chapter were too long, and it felt less like a cohesive story and more like jumping into key moments in their relationship. Everything was rushed, and all the problematic behaviors and situations weren't given enough time to have the emotional impact that they should've had. I liked it when we suddenly switched POVs at the end, though. Being able to see what Takase thought about Kirino's behavior and how he interpreted it made the story even better. 4 stars

THE ART IS SO PRETTY but kirino's decisions are all over the place. he decided he wanted to break up with takase. then on the other day, he wanted them to be back together like bro if u need more time deciding, u should've asked for it !!

This explored the psychology of these characters as much as it was a romance, and seeing the way the former affects the latter was so interesting to me. I liked this a lot, but it needed to be longer if it was going to thoroughly explore its themes.

Good premise, with pretty average execution.

I didn't feel that much of an emotional connection to the characters or their relationship, and I think that's due to the kind of odd pacing and dreary tone. Kirino is extremely depressed the entire time, which is a bigger issue that I'm not convinced a relationship with Takase can "fix." I do see some progress with Kirino trying to accept that he's allowed to find happiness along new paths and that it's okay to love someone and let himself be loved, but all of that gets a little bit muddied by the end.

How is Kirino suddenly teaching the piano again? Didn't he JUST give it up entirely in the previous chapter, with Takase kissing him and telling him it's okay, he loves Kirino even without the piano connecting them? There needed to be some actual substance outlining Kirino's path back to the music he was absolutely ready to abandon. Did he just go back to it because it's the only thing he knows how to do? That leaves him just as lost as he was when he was ready to break up with Takase. And would they have really been able to stay together if Kirino had cut himself off from the thing that drew Takase to him in the first place?

That's my main issue with the story; it seems like a pretty gaping plot hole that was actually crucial to the plot. And it wouldn't have been that difficult to develop better, even in a one-shot.

The relationship itself I think mostly works, although it does feel shallow. I really like the parallels between Kirino and Takase and Kirino's parents. His mother was a brilliant pianist, which is something his father fell in love with...and then took away from her. Kirino is, he fears, more like the father he hates than the mother he'd adored and wanted to emulate. While he learned to play the piano and won competitions because it made his mother happy, he never had her talent. What he does have is his father's insecurity and jealousy.

In order to keep Kirino's mother to himself, Kirino's father slowly separated her from the competition circuit, then got her pregnant, twice - tying her down with the first son and killing her with the second, since she wasn't physically strong enough to go through childbirth twice. That left him with the son he'd never actually wanted as anything other than a weight to anchor his wife to their marriage.

The father isn't a villain, exactly, and Kirino talks about him in decent enough terms in the bonus story, while debating with Takase about whether to tell their families about them, but we don't see any actual attempts to mend that relationship. Another gap in the story that would've made it a lot fuller and more satisfying.

But I did like that this is the kind of trauma that left Kirino struggling with his ability to truly be in love with anyone - especially someone who reminds him so much of his bright, talented, loving mother. He's an incredibly loving person who wants to pour all his devotion into another person, but he's absolutely terrified of losing that person again.

With Takase, he's convinced that they'll break up once Takase realizes that his hero worship is unfounded, Kirino is both a mess of a person and not that great of a pianist, and that there's a huge world of people waiting to embrace the far more talented and kinder and more interesting Takase.

Takase promises Kirino that this isn't true, that he'll love him and stay with him forever, and Kirino lets go of his fears and agrees to keep their relationship going...which is all sweet, except this is happening before Takase's college graduation, and as he's just started to enter international championships. So there's no actual test of their relationship's durability. Nothing to really say for certain that Takase won't realize at some point in the future that Kirino is disappointing and that he can do better.

I did like the little glimpse into Takase's point of view; while he's very approachable and charismatic, he's not the kind of person who genuinely cares about much of anything or anyone. So once he finds things he likes - the piano, Kirino - he latches on and is devoted to that forever. Which kind of works, I guess. It just doesn't feel all that substantial.

The problem is, I understood Kirino a lot more as a character, and I don't know if Takase fully convinced me that he loves Kirino for who he actually is as a person. There's the big reveal that he'd been interested in Kirino from the beginning, and was fully aware that Kirino was trying to hurt him/drive him away/etc, but was so happy that his affections were at least somewhat reciprocated. Cute, right, since Kirino was agonizing the entire time over falling in love with someone he'd initially hurt.

But that's still just Takase being attached to Kirino from a point of admiration. What makes him love Kirino in the present? That question isn't ever answered. I don't know why Takase likes him, other than: "I decided to love you, and once I make up my mind, I never change it!" Cool story but where's the rest?

There isn't much depth to their relationship. It's choppy and hard to follow, and instead of focusing on that growth and mutual understanding, we spend most of the time wallowing in Kirino's self-hatred and misery. I really wanted Kirino to find a new path for himself - something he loved and was good at and didn't feel like he had to stay connected to just for his mother's love or Takase's love. He just feels stagnant still at the end of this volume...following Takase's bright star and hoping Takase will never get tired of him.

The other odd thing is that Kirino actually did have some friends, like the other student and the guy and girl at the bar, so I wish there'd been more development of their social group. Otherwise, it does feel like Kirino's entire life and happiness is centered around one person. Which is what went wrong in his parents' relationship and messed him up to begin with.

I was leaning towards keeping this one, because there are some interesting elements, but I think I won't. I have plenty of other, better developed manga sitting on my shelf waiting for me to have the time to revisit them. It's a shame, because this could've been a really thoughtful and impactful story about overcoming trauma, dealing with grief, and finding out what you want from your own life.

I wish this story would have been darker. It had this set up for a disturbing story about obsession and jealousy, but didn't really delve that deep into it because of the need to have a "happy ending."

I am going to eat this manga.

Urgh!!! I just love obsessive, destructive, all consuming love so much!! Especially obsessive all consuming love that is closely linked to trauma!!

Likes:
- The art is STUNNING. I love how emotion was depicted and how slightly unnerving some panels looked. Something about it kept reminding me of Harada's style, especially with the eyes.
- I like how Kirino's trauma was was explored, and how his monologues totally came off like a pretentious artsy kid. Sure, it's not the most in depth depiction of trauma I've ever read, but I like how it seeped into all aspects of his life, from how he expected people to act, to his own desire to hurt others like he'd been hurt, to his expectation that people will leave him and things will always end, and even to his obsessive love.
- I really like how Kirino tried to fill his space with things Takase would like to kind of apologize and convince him to love him. It's such a subtle thing, but it goes right back in with that obsessive style of love he has.
- I loved Takase!! He is SO cute. And I LOVED
- re: pretentious art kid vibes, I really liked the writing style. It really just felt right for these characters and their interests and experiences, and the tone and subject matter over all.

Other thoughts:
- The jump between chapter one and two was a bit odd, and, overall, it felt like things progressed very quickly; like, I expected it to move at a bit of a slower pace, given the tone and subject matter. It didn't ultimately detract from my enjoyment of the story, though.
- Kirino notes several times that he is jealous of Takase's talent, and while I like that his jealousy was over a talent and not a person, I don't feel like I really saw his jealousy -- that is to say, he said he was jealous, but it didn't really come off that way. Now I will admit, the entire concept of jealousy has been ruined for me forever by Ogeretsu Tanaka's Daisy Jealousy because she depicted the slowly burning, eating you alive, twisting everything you love into something you hate, all consuming nature of jealousy SO WELL that I don't know if any other mangaka can top it. Kirino's jealousy is... not nearly as complex, and doesn't even come off as jealousy to me. Instead, his mental state comes off more as "I am hurting others before they can hurt me" and "I am ending this on my terms before someone else ends it and I'm the one left hurting" and "I don't want you to end up like me, so I cannot stay and drag you down." Which are all extremely valid trauma responses, and mindsets that I think would have made more sense than the "jealousy" route. It makes sense that he would be jealous, given that he is a prodigy turned burn out, but, again, outside of him saying it, I never actually got that feeling.
- Similarly, I couldn't really figure out how he actually felt about the piano. It didn't really bother me overall as I read, but as I wrote the above point, I realized that I don't know if he actually liked playing the piano or if he really only liked it because of his mother liked it,

I wish this author had more pages to build this story up better. I think the concept was interesting and it was executed well. It was just a bit rushed. There wasn't enough build up for the boys' love. They went from strangers to obsessively in love so quickly. I would've loved just a little more to feel their love and obsession. Also the small break up they had happened and resolved too quickly to really feel it. The story overall just gave me whiplash. It's definitely something I'll want to reread in the future and I can see why people may not like this. For me it reminded me of Ugetsu and Akihiko from Given. Their stories are really not similar at all except the music and how it affected their relationship, but I think that connection endeared me to the story more. This story had great potential and I think that the author just had too big of an idea for the pages they were allotted.

Hmm, how should I explain this? Actually, it's not a new or fresh concept, and you could say that this kind of plot is pretty common and often seen, but the author's storytelling is enjoyable to follow.

Can I enjoy this manga? I have a love-hate relationship with this type of plot. The main character has bad habits leading to a toxic relationship with their partner. I need to give some tolerance because their personality is shaped by a troubled past, but of course, what they do to the main lead isn't justifiable.

Besides that, although it's written quite well, the author tends to rush things, affecting the overall execution of the story. This isn't a major issue for me, but I think the manga would be more interesting if the story was built more slowly and involved more emotions, so what the main character feels is conveyed well to the readers.

Overall, I like this manga, although it won't become my favorite.

This was such a sweet story! The couple was so cute, the NICE scenes are NICE! The second character had a personality shift that I didn't see coming, and that made their relationship work sooo good! Little weird but their kisses are drawn so realistic and passionately. I loved that we could read the thoughts from both of the male characters. Usually in yaoi you hear from just one of the guys so that was a nice change.

Unhealthy relationship? Check! Sad bois? Check! Takase is an apathetic and burnt out child pianist who meets Kirino, the dazzling and talented fledging star. Intending to toy with him and use him, Takase agrees to tutor Kirino and they find a little more along the way. Can he be fixed? Maybe!

Overall, I enjoyed it! This manga has mixed reviews. I’m pretty picky myself and didn’t mind its setbacks. This isn’t something I’d recommend to everybody. However, if you’re looking for a story that’s more on the dark and introspective side with a tiny dash of fluff to remind you that this is a romance story, you might like it.

Who is this manga for
This is a dark and introspective story, not exactly a romance. But the couple does navigate their relationship to grow as people, so it kinda depends on how you see it! It’s not exactly a fluffy one, so I’d recommend this on for fans of their romance on the messy side.

Amamos a la gente codependiente.
Amamos a la gente posesiva.
Amamos a los protagonistas con problemas afectivos.
Amamos a los que no quieren racionalmente.

They match each other's freak and I'm here for it.

How fun.

This isn't a bad story, but it's not told well. I don't actually mind the messy relationship, because the author is really getting into the nitty gritty of the way these two characters are co-dependent and are both toxic in different ways. Those dynamics are interesting and engaging if you're not looking for a sweet and fluffy read.

My issue is with the pacing and presentation. The scenes are too choppy, and the emotional developments are too sudden, jumping from one extreme to another. The backstories aren't well integrated. There was a lot to like, but instead of feeling really invested in the story and the characters, I felt like I was shut out by panels that felt disconnected, and emotions that swung wildly without warning. When the resolution/catharsis does come, it doesn't really feel earned because the reader isn't properly along for the journey.

Overall, I actually really enjoyed the plot and the characters, but the pacing was too volatile.

There's an unintentional music theme between this and the last book I read, though this one is a much smoother read over all. Kirino was once considered a child-prodigy, but now can barely stand playing the piano after losing his mother, as she was his inspiration and reason for playing for so long. The last thing he expected when he returned to Japan was to find a new prodigy, Takase, handing him flowers and telling him that he's the reason he started playing piano. Kirino is a bit of a cynic at this stage, but it seems like Takase has the patience and desire to get them through several unusual obstacles as he waits for Kirino's walls to come down. Not that it's all smooth sailing once they get together, but a voice of reason and a heavy dose of yearning, with some guilt and love in the mix, can do a lot to change a course.

I decided on a whim to buy this manga- if you're in it for the art, you'll adore it. Nagisa has talent and boy does it show in their art! Every drawing is so pretty <3; I love the designs, I love the layout.

What I didn't like was the lack of...planning? The story seems rushed in some parts, but I can't tell if that's due to a lack of planning or because there wasn't enough pages to build . There were a couple of times that I felt I lost track of the plot with the main characters and had to reread it just to make sure I didn't miss anything that would explain why this person couldn't make up their mind, etc.

I think it could be fixed if there was either more pages or the story itself was more streamlined. All in all, I did like the book.

Thank you for making it!

This had absolutely stunning art.

Much of the focus was on Kirino's self-loathing, his inability to believe that someone can have genuine feelings for him, and the ways in which he hurts those around him to avoid being hurt himself. This was all expressed rather well in the narration. However, scenes jumped around too much, and periods of time that would show development of the relationship and characters themselves were skipped. This lessened the impact of the moments when he realized his flaws, because he'd make a major mistake and they'd move past it 4 pages later.

Overall, not a bad read.

I had seen a few people mentioning this book, and of course I got FOMO and decided to read it. I'm definitely glad I moved it up to the top of my list fast.

The story focuses on Kirino and Takase who both play piano. The story is very angsty and we see a lot of Kirino being all over the place, wanting to give up piano and not really knowing what he wants with Takase. Their story is extremely cute though, and it was a great read! Definitely glad I picked it up.
