Ozanna’s job was going to get her killed. What was meant to be simple bodyguard duty on a cushy, boring bridal journey becomes an increasingly bizarre series of events. Her charge, Emmelina, is a princess with many talents and little sense of self preservation. She leads the Ozanna into danger at nearly every turn. Then when they’re captured by elven highwaymen, Emmelina has the nerve to try and play matchmaker with Ozanna and a wicked dark elf. In the wake of the princess’ chaos, Ozanna is left questioning not just her career choices, but her sanity as well.
Lhoris’ control over his crew of robbers is tenuous at best. Always one bad job away from mutiny, he and his brother are troubled by how easily their plans to steal the princess’s dowry fall apart. To make matters worse, he can’t help but be drawn to the furious bodyguard that further threatens his ability to maintain order within the crew.
If only he hadn’t made a deal with that damned warlord.
Mix a little bit of magic with chaos, questionable divine intervention, and spice and you have The Oracle’s Journey. Expect a little of the unexpected in this enemies to lovers adventure.
M.M. Rees was raised on fantasy and sci-fi television, movies, and most importantly, literature. An avid reader in her early years, she discovered a love of writing in high school that carried through to her adult life. The Oracle's Journey is her debut as an author and she is presently working on it's sequels.
Following Ozanna and Princess Emmaline as they begin their journey to the Princess' dashing and sweet betrothed is whimsical at first, and quickly shifts to action and excitement. The plot only thickens with the strangers they encounter on the road, which results in life-changing events for our brave and strong warrior. Lhoris and his crew are an unwelcome change in plans at first, but the Oracle will reveal all when the time is right. Things only get crazier when the journey ends, but is it really the end? Or is it merely the next chapter? It's hard to put this one down before the end!
I think the *only* thing I didn't like/appreciate was how fast the story moved - it felt a little rushed to me. Otherwise, I loved everything about it.
This was a great story that took us on a wild & dangerous adventure to get Emmelina to her betrothed. Her guardian Ozanna is a strong-willed & patient with Emma’s odd & peculiar behaviors. Lhoris & his brother start out as the “bad” guys but redeem themselves & are interesting characters also.
I loved the soft magic system, where actions, knowledge and intent can shape one’s magic and ability. The princess goes from a sort of “mad oracle” to a perfectly sane woman basically overnight using her little-understood abilities, and never fails to challenge our MCs at every turn. The MMC goes from enemy to lover with lightning quickness, but it totally works in context. He is forced to work with these guys and doesn’t like their methods.
There is some dark content, most of which happens off screen (thank you for that) and torture of MCs (eye injury warning!) SA in backstory and sort of a dubcon/sex pollen/idk situation happens off screen that affects the characters and the plot going forward but it’s none of their faults, and the bad guy gets literally flayed alive for doing it, so thankfully we don’t have to deal with an ongoing “he’s getting away with it” situation (that’d make this so much more depressing). I do think that the characters are appropriately angry with what’s happened without letting it bring down the energy of the story.
I have mixed feelings. The first like 70% of the book was meh. Very insta-lovey which I hate. They were “enemies” for like 5 minutes. And two days later they’re saying I love you. Girl bye. Not a lot of explanation of the magic systems or Emma being a random Demi goddess/oracle/shape shifter ?? Oh. Ok. But then the last 30% picked up a bit more. Some really fucking grotesque scenes. Then obviously there’s a cliffhanger so I have to continue 🙃

The Oracle‘s Journey by M.M. Rees is an amazing fantasy adventure and enemies to lovers romance novel. I am so glad I read this book it was fascinating and I truly enjoyed it. It was unlike most books I have read so I have to say Thank You to the author for that!
Emmilina is a princess who is on her bridal voyage to be married and Ozanna is her entrusted bodyguard. Her maids Judith and Eve also go along with them. The premise is about their journey and who they meet along the way. Also of course what happens when they arrive and her betrothed. I do not to give too much away!
This was steamy in all the right places. It had action and adventure, fantasy and was a fun read with some heartbreaking moments as well. I definitely highly recommend this to book to anyone!
The Oracle's Journey was so enjoyable for so many reasons. The major characters are powerful and relatable, the world building and magic are well done, and the spice. Is. SPICY. I loved every minute of reading it.
Rees is a new to me author and I greatly enjoyed this book. The characters are well written and relatable. Oz is fierce and patient with Emma and Emma is the perfect amount of innocence mixed with crazy. This did end on a cliffhanger so hopefully we don’t have to wait long for book 2.
This is the first book I read by this author, I'm so glad I did.
Ozanna is the bodyguard to Princess Emmelina "Emma" along their journey Ozanna finds that the Princess has some unusual moments where Ozanna questions her own sanity by what she sees the Princess doing and how much work there is to watching Princess to keep her safe.
Lhoris crew of robbers come to rob the carriage and find it's not carrying what they expected. Now they have to decide whether to turn it in to Dulanzo or continue on the Princess journey.
The storyline is really good, there's excitement, diffently a page turner, you get to see characters develop as you read this book. I didn't want it to end I was so intrigued by the characters.
So you follow the journey of Emmilina who is a young princess, around teenage years. She is going to be married to a man she had only met in dreams through a divine connection. Her father hires a woman to be her protector alongside her maids. The protector is called Ozanna, she is half elf, half human. Judith and Eve. Eve is young also and Judith is an older lady. They get hijacked and kidnapped by a group of dark elves who are looking for the alleged dowry they have, then things take a turn. You find out more about Emma's magic, Ozanna's gifts and what Emma has seen as an Oracle. Emma is so hilarious with the things she gets up too lol and it's sad as well when she is trying to get a handle on her powers without anyone to teach her. The two other elves are called Lobikno and Lhoris, they are brothers. Watching Ozanna bond with her mate and seeing their story unfold is amazing. Oh wait until you to the story about Lhoris and Lobinko it's heartbreaking.
They are heading to Bergellon to meet Nicolas, that's who Emma will be marrying. He is a Duke and lives in a chateau.
Finally Oz and Lhoris get alone time, their moments together are so intimate, raw and special it's beautiful.
In the final 30% you hear more from Nicolas, you hear things be explained from earlier, plus more to discover. Not all is as it seems.
This has love, fantasy, fae, human, dwarves, twists, deception, spice, craziness, danger, heartbreak, violence. Everything you want in a book.
Omg that ending, I can't cope, I need more now.. I need answers!
My god what a beautifully tragic story, full of hope and hopelessness.
Such a beautiful story full of danger, action, violence, magic, elves and trauma. Emmelina and Ozanna were strong and so likeable. Lhoris and Lobikno had a heartbreaking past. I loved both of them. An amazing fantasy that had me gripped and emotionally involved.
A beautiful tale of magic, fantasy and love! A journey of discovery full of perils where Ozanna,a badass fae hibrid is hired to protect Emmelina,a princess sweet, wild and a bit unhinged in a journey to marry Nicolas. In their path they are kidnapped and grow a connection with two Faes. But the troubles are only starting..... A captivating story, multifaceted, detailed and often complex settings and characters that kept me engrossed in the story! Special mention to Emmelina 's character,it's chefs kiss!
Mannn, this might be a 2 star read for me. ⭐️⭐️ I think if we had taken a different approach to how we told this story, this could have been really cool because it's an interesting idea! But for me personally, I think it was just... off.
PLOT She is the bodyguard for the princess and is hired to protect her on her journey to her new husband. On the way, their caravan gets overtaken by dark elves. But are these elves the thieves they seem, or is there something more? This book has: - Some pretty dark moments so plz check trigger warnings - Hostage situation - Elves and magical powers - multiple POVs
PROS - The last 15% or so was wild. Came out of nowhere. - Even though we had very little time to get to know our characters, they were established pretty well. We understood most of their motivations pretty well. - Overall it is a cool premise.
MIDS - A thing happened that seemed extremely out of nowhere. It has to be setup for something in one of the following books, but it just seemed so strangely thrown in.
CONS - The pacing of this was really odd to me. The development of relationships was done at warp speed, but somehow the plot didn't actually move until like 85% in? For so much of this book it felt more like a character journey but I wasn't getting the depth I normally expect from that type of story. - The romances happened so fast. Not everything has to be a slow burn, but it was so fast I was like "wait how did we get here?" - We spent the vast majority of this book with essentially no villain, or or overarching challenge other than getting from point A to point B. So then when we got to the end and were introduced to one I was like okay where did this come from? - What were the princess's powers? I feel like all the sudden she's just doing more and more but we don't actually know what they are at all. Maybe I missed it or something, but all the sudden she has power A or power B and I was like.. since when? And I tend not to like limitless seeming magic at all. - I think this story could have been significantly improved if it were told in flashbacks. The last 15% was crazy, with tons of interesting shit happening but the rest of the book was so slow-moving plot-wise. I think this could have been super awesome if we had started the book with a look into how it ended without any context, and then were provided the story via flashbacks, bouncing back and forth to the end and the lead-up. That would have had me pumped to continue reading. I also think it could have maybe introduced relationships more slowly and add in some possible tension where there basically was none. With how the story was written, I really just didn't care.
I was intrigued at first. The premise sounded promising. I especially liked the idea of the "support character" playing a leading role... Sadly the execution had some issues... Pacing.. first they spent what felt like ages on the road, traipsing through the woods, chasing after the wayward princess, etc. This must have been at least 35/40 % of the book then we finally (at about halfway through the book) get to somewhere else and suddenly it's jumping from one place to the next, both in terms of physical location as well as story/relationship development. I kept flipping back the page to see if I skipped a chapter or several by mistake... out of the blue we get sudden romantic declarations and other "surprises" that usually belong at the end of the book/epilogue... admittedly that's when I lost interest
spice/smut... in between we're suddenly dumped into quite a unexpected porno... don't get me wrong I enjoy a good smutty read as much as the next girl, but there is such a thing as a time and place (both in terms of location/setting as well as within the story) and what's more it felt wholly out of place/ out of sync with the rest of the book/ the story. not too mention that we'd had little more than half-hearted flirting attempts until then...
Storytelling/ writing the world building was practically nonexistent.. not even the gradual/ organic kind where you discover/ learn as you go a long in the story... ... also an odd dichotomy of barely explaining anything and explaining too much. the characters had the annoying habit of explaining their every statement whenever they were in a conversation with one / any of the others...
This was a pretty good indie romantasy series starter. I liked that it was about elves instead of fae, because we don’t get enough books about them. Half-elf Ozanna was strong and smart, and dark elf Lhoris was caring and understanding. They were a good match for each other and I loved their open communication throughout the book, but the insta-love was extra instant to the point that there was zero build-up or tension.
Princess Emmelina was an interesting character. I liked that she was feisty and clever, but her gifts weren’t explained well enough to really understand them. When she changed into an animal and then got stuck that way, but could still talk like a human, I was super confused. Her naïveté, personality, and mischievous nature was more 9 year old than 19 year old.
There were a few too many POVs, and it felt like they gave away the twists too easily. I would’ve liked to see Ozanna and Lhoris figure everything out along with the reader, instead of jumping into the villain’s POV before we could even begin to predict what was going to happen. Just sticking to those two, and Emmelina for a few chapters, would’ve been sufficient for finding things out.
The audiobook narration by Ariel Barber was pretty good. I was impressed by her ability to perform so many POVs with actual differences in voice, but I would’ve preferred multi-cast narration.
I’ll be reading the second book to find out what happens after the cliffhanger.
Thank you to the author, MM Rees, for the audiobook ARC in exchange for my honest review!
I really REALLY did not like this book. Did I finish it? Yes. But I really pushed just to get it off my TBR. When I saw the ad, I expected a golden retriever MMC and a strong grumpy FMC. What I got was a Weiner dog and a lazy cat. The pacing was so off, the trigger warnings not enough. The insta love but written in such a weird way. I still can't figure out if they were forced or not? Emma being a Demi god but also crazy? But also madly in love but also only 19? This felt like it was written by a 17 year old on Wattpad. There was so many storylines and random thing and then the line "I r@ped your wife over multiple days" EXCUSE ME?? I had to skip through the last few chapters. The random switching of POV was so odd, I've never read a book this weird and bad. I'm really sorry that I don't have a positive thing to say 😭 I had medium hopes and they were all squashed.
Sweet to dark fantasy story!! Check out this first in a series read!! I found this book featured in my recent Facebook Cover Reveal party and the name caught my attention. The Oracle's Journey is the name of my series too. But this is a different Oracle with a different purpose and she is just a little bit out of control. Emmelina is a young princess on a mission to meet her promised husband, but her path is rocky and she needs someone to protect her. Emmelina also has emerging powers that no one understand especially Emmelina. Ozanna is brought forward as the protector needed to travel with the princess and keep her safe. But shortly after they leave the safety of the castle, they run into problems. This tale has a wonderful darkness that sneaks up on you. Be prepared for depraved villains, who will change the path Emmelina and Ozanna thought they were traveling down.
This is the first book I read by the author. The book started a little slowly as the author developed the world and characters. Lots of background. But that becomes important as the book moves along. While the book title implies the book is about Emma, the real story is Ozanna and Lhoris, but it's left unresolved until book 2. That is not to say there's nothing of Emma in here; there most definitely is but it felt like her journey was necessary to move Ozanna and Lhoris's story forward.
There is a bit of graphic violence, a lot of mysticism, puzzles, mysteries, secrets, action, all mixed in with the love stories.
I was a little worried about the book but am now into the second book.
This is my first M.M. Rees book and I thoroughly enjoyed delving into this new world that has been created. While I found the book initially slow to get going and learning how the world was shaped with its characters, it was well worth sticking with it. The characters were intricate and intriguing in their nature and history, giving them depth and feeling. While ending on a cliffhanger, Book 2 has been released so am happy to be jumping right back in to see how it plays out.
This book had me hooked from start to finish! Solid 4.5 ⭐️
The characters were all multidimensional and watching the development from the beginning to the end was wonderful. The climax of the action felt a little rushed but other than that the pacing was well balanced and kept me engaged from the get go. I can’t wait to see what MM does as the story progresses. Solid debut novel, will happily continue to read her work.
The pacing of this book is what a year feels like. You know how January feels super long? Each month slowly speeds up and eventually Sep - Dec fly by in the blink of an eye. That’s how this book felt. It started off slow, then it got really dark, intense and fast paced towards the end.
I was amazed by the originality of story. The way the characters were built from points of view gave great back round without tedious story telling. Twists and turns were truly surprising, breathtaking and I can not wait for a second book.
Absolutely loved the storyline and character development! I switched between reading and listening, and the only thing I didn’t like was the narrator. Definitely starting the next one in the series this week.
So I've never read about Elves before. I liked Lohoris and Libohoko the best. Ozanna was quite bratty lol. The p...rn was a bit irritating but not enough to make me want to melt my eyes off.
