Sandra Wilde is extremely knowledgable on the topic. I loved reading this book, especially for the refresher on phonics. However, I couldn't believe that after sharing her great wealth of knowledge, she ended the book with a balanced literacy perspective. It's such a shame! Especially with how poorly kids are reading today, we should be sharing this information with children, not making them suffer and figure the rules out on their own.

This is a really excellent book for teachers of reading. A basic grasp of our linguistic system is a critical, and often overlooked, component of expertise in literacy instruction. Whether a teacher has fallen into the trap of thinking she's using a "whole language" approach, but is actually not incorporating enough word work, or whether she relies too heavily on a basal reader or spelling program for her phonics component without understanding the decisions behind those programs, this book can patch some big holes in her practice.
