Shifters Sanctuary #1

His Alpha Unlocked

Rate this book
It's knot funny, it's fate.

Former foster kid Beckett (Beck) Smith is 31 and has never had any reason to think that he’s anything other than human. But meeting Oliver (Ollie) Grayson in a club stirs something primal inside him, creating a desire that can’t be ignored. Learning that Ollie is an omega wolf shifter isn’t a deterrent, not when he can’t keep his hands off the young, vibrant, sexy man. And it’s all going great…until his body changes at the most unexpected and awkward moment. (It's really not funny, fate!)

Suddenly, Beck discovers that he’s not as human as he believed. Furthermore, it turns out he’s an alpha in a world where alphas are thought to be extinct. Then there’s also the fact that he’s somehow mystically bonded to Ollie. It’s a lot to process. Don’t get him Ollie’s a great guy. He’s gorgeous and smart, and his obsession with all things Christmas is stupidly endearing, but Beck hadn’t exactly planned to commit to the guy for life.

However, when Ollie’s pack threatens them, Beck will do anything to keep his mate safe…even if it means putting his own life on the line.

His Alpha Unlocked is a sweet, instant attraction (fated mates) romance. It IS an mpreg, and it does contain violence, threats, kidnapping, anxiety, controlling families, and some mild angst. This book contains elements suited to readers over the age of 18.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

“Seriously, does that toyboy of yours let you sleep?” “Let’s get one thing straight,” I told her haughtily over my shoulder, “I am the toyboy in our relationship, being the youngest and prettiest and all.”

This omegaverse book was refreshingly original, and I’m glad I snagged an ARC. I’ve read quite a bit of omegaverse the last couple of years, but this is the first time I’ve read one where the alpha is rare. In this world, alphas have been extinct for a looot of years, and I loved that aspect of the story. It added something different you don’t see a lot.

I also really enjoyed how the MCs chemistry really showed on page. That part of these types of books is so important to get right if the instant connection is gonna be believable. These guys are really put through a lot personally and as a couple, and I’m glad it wasn’t treated like their lives hadn’t just exploded. Playing off all of that personal upheaval like no problem at all wouldn’t have worked, but it still wasn’t really angsty. They communicated well and decided to make it work.

This is also the most mpreggy mpreg book I’ve read, I think. A lot of the pregnancy (as well as the birth) is on page, so it isn’t treated as an afterthought in the epilogue. It was a large part of the plot, and so sweet and cute at times. The couple gets their HEA, but the author has set it up for a future series, so there’s a bit of a series cliffhanger.

Extra note: it’s been cool to see the author write better and better sex scenes with each book.

“But if you change your mind, just tell me, okay? I need my mate in fighting shape.” Ollie snorted again. “Fighting, huh? Is that what we’re calling it?” My cheeks burned. “Around my sister it is.”

“Jesus, Beck, what did you do to him?” Sandy joked. I was not expecting Beck to respond honestly. “I knocked him up.” Silence fell. “Say what now?”

“Fucking fuck.”
“You’re doing well, Ollie. You can do this.”
“Oh, shut the fuck up.”

I imagine this is an accurate representation of giving birth, lol.

Man this was such a ride! I honestly didn’t really expected too much here but I got everything I wanted and more.

First the story was a bit cliché but did I mind? No.
It definitely was heavily on drama/angst trope, and to my surprise it had far more action that i would have thought had first. But it was outbalanced really well and the story got a bit more special since we are in a world where alphas are non existent.

But Ollie who is an omega accidentally unlocked Becketts alpha „genes“ as they had sex and suddenly were locked together. This was really refreshing to read! I really loved both characters sobald much they had a beautiful dynamic and everything between them felt so natural. Especially their reactions to Beckett being an alpha and Becketts reaction to the whole shifter world. I loved the way they threaten and reassured each other and they had so many sweet and tender scenes together, especially as Ollie got pregnant!!

„Having my inner alpha unlocked and discovering I was so much more than the no hope foster kid I’d been had given my life purpose in ways I was still learning to embrace.
I had a family. Pups. A pack.“

Another thing I want to point out here is, that I think the whole shifter universe was really well done here. I especially like the description of how they shift and their „pack“ dynamic. In particular since we got a little inside how the hierarchy between alpha, beta and omega functions. And since Beckett discovered this all for the first time as well, it made the shifting moments and even more interesting.

The only thing I thing that could have been better or even not put into the story at all, was Becketts kidnapping scenes. For me this wasn’t really necessary and all in all the whole thing with Ollie’s previous pack was not really done well. But other than that I really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend if you look for a shifter/omegaverse read.

Finally! I hope this trend of birthing continues. This end of Alphas yet Betas can impregnated humans. Woah, now that's different.

Mpreg automatically gets bumped up half a star.

Look, I don't make the rules.

Is this a cheesy, cliche, saccharine mess? Yes, but it did it for me, and that's what I needed. 💅🏾

This was completely different than any other shifter/fated mates book I’ve ever read. Alphas basically went extinct and so there hasn’t been an alpha omega unions in thousands of years. The shifters are living among the humans and there are only omegas and betas out there to their knowledge. Ollie works for a doctor researching all things shifter because it’s been so many years that they aren’t sure how things work anymore.

Ollie, an omega wolf shifter, goes out one night and sees Beck, a human, across the dance floor. They are both immediately attracted to each other and spend time together at the club. They go their separate ways at the end of the night without exchanging any information and for the next few weeks they can’t stop thinking about each other. They do each go out (off page) and try to see if they could be with someone else but neither of them have any interest in anyone but each other. They finally run into each other weeks later and both are so happy to have found each other again.

Now Beck who’s always thought he was human finds out he’s not during their first intimate act. They end up fated mates because they accidentally mark each other and then the story picks up for there. Now I will say the majority of this book Ollie is pregnant. He gets pregnant very early on and so the book is about them accepting all these new changes while being mated to someone they just met and also dealing with the drama Ollies family is causing. Beck was super afraid at first of everything. Even after a while he was still nervous because he didn’t anticipate finding out he’s a shifter, getting a mate and knocking him up all in one night. And although he’s really nervous about it, that doesn’t stop him from being such a good mate and I loved that. He was seriously the best mate to Ollie and such a great character. Both of them were.

The only reason this didn’t get the full 5 stars was because it got boring toward the middle. There are also a lot of unanswered questions when it came to the research of shifters and everything with Ollies family. There was no conclusion which I guess might be in the next book but I didn’t like how so much was left open. Other than that I enjoyed the book. I’m not sure if I’ll read the next one because it has some stuff that’s not really my thing like rope play and other things.

Okay, normally I'm KNOT one for shifter romances...get it? Also I'm iffy on surprise pregnancy tropes, but this was just a fun time and I read it in two sittings. I adored every bit of this, and the world building was believable and interesting. Alphas going extinct, mated pair, fated mates, surprise pregnancy, surprise male alpha, action adventure, this has it all! Ollie and Beck were an adorable couple and the happy ending was everything. My one issue is that I'd like a scene where they'd confront Ollie's pack at the end, but otherwise this was a blast to read. 4.5 ⭐ rounded up!

This was a nice and refreshing omegaverse read. I am so glad Anna Sparrows is really getting into this world with her writing.

Ollie and Beck were wonderful together. Being fated, but not even knowing that Beck is an alpha made this even more delightful. They had fantastic chemistry all the way through.

There was some drama/angst with Ollie’s pack, but nothing too heart-rending. The mpreg was done so well, with a lot of it being on page. I loved this aspect of the book. Overall, this was a great little.

3.5⭐

read this as part of a massive academic crashout with catherine lmao (we are on the struggle bus with our theses); also this was my first western omegaverse and it was so interesting comparing it to eastern omegaverse works (for context, western omegaverse stories tend to go rlly hard with the whole shapeshifter / werewolf thing which isn't rlly present at all in eastern stuff)

also hilarious that my playlist started playing loba by shakira right as i'm writing this review lmaoooo

considering we started reading this for shits and giggles, i didn't expect to like it as much as i did?? also i feel like i have to read the rest of the series now because it's just that ridiculous and my brain craves madness. the confirmed existence of neil patrick harris within this shifter/omegaverse world setting absolutely sent me. also the fact that not only christianity is confirmed to exist but specifically that ollie's shifter family are evangelical ??? insane implications 😂

talking about being ridiculous (and i mean that in a good way), this book was so fucking funny 😂 especially because at some points it felt very self-aware, it knew what it was doing and did it anyways - sometimes literally saying stuff like "[thing happened], which is weird as hell . Anyways-" 😂😂

also i loved that beck was such a green flag guy, even tho sometimes it was stated in a very on-the-nose way. i admire this man's commitment to the geneva convention nonetheless 😌 also the age gap trope was written rlly well through the 2 POVs, it's obvious that beck is more mature and i'm glad the author was able to show that in the writing instead of just telling us. another thing i loved about beck was that he is not genre savvy at all, he basically got randomly airdropped into not only the omegaverse but also being a wolf shifter?? and he quite reasonably spends about half the book having the most valid crashouts 😂 it was so fucking funny

i also rlly liked eric's character lmao, i'm convinced me and him are on the exact same wavelength. literally at one point in the book i thought to myself 'this has fascinating implications for IVF' and then on the NEXT PAGE eric literally said 'this has fascinating implications for IVF' 😂😂😂 my comrade in scientific intrigue i salute you 🫡 also wtf

anyways in terms of things i didn't like: the prevalence of uncomfortably tight skinny jeans. fashion sin. made me feel like my circulation had been cut off just reading about it.

also i had so many 'america moments' (basically stuff that would only rlly happen in america; i am not american). especially when it was mentioned that ollie was "barely of legal drinking age" i was like????? he's 22?? but then it hit me that americans aren't allowed to drink until they're 21 😭 also my complete inability to read the word 'mate' in any serious capacity (but that's on me for being british lmao)

overall i staunchly believe this book is a work of art and a masterpiece of modern literature, give the author an award fr 😂

This was actually a really interesting and unique story despite the stereotypical omegaverse elements (didn't stop me from eating ts up). Sparrows' writing style seemed effortless - the plot didn't drag once throughout the book.

I loved the world building so far, and I'm interested in all the side characters (which is a rarity). Baddie Eric's story when??😫 I could see this series having 5+ volumes.

This was sweet with action and relationship building. I love how even though they were "fated", they still wanted to get to know one another as if the bond hadn't already taken. The side characters were cool, and I'd love a story with the doctor, and his brothers' stories too.

This was surprisingly nice.

In many omegaverse/mpreg stories, the characters have this kind of blase attitude towards the scenarios they find themselves in (aka bad writing) that annoys me to no end. Like “guess I am pregnant, time for pregnant sex scene”. This was not the case here, it was refreshing to see the characters acting annoyed, confused, and worried about the situations they found themselves in.

The whole “alphas are extinct” plot was also unique, and a very interesting take on the very tired trope of omegaverse.

There is also nice amount of great one-liners and little dialogue gems that made me chuckle. Guess this author writes dialogue really well.

This story has lots of potential, interesting concept and I liked the writing. However sadly i just got more annoyed as the reveals develop through the story.

Beck & Ollie's initial meeting is stunning, all of the chemistry and flirting - got to love a dance scene, the whole moment of them being hooked one one another was lovely.

I did adore that didn't go instantly though, there is that time apart and then find again which was lovely. However I'd have enjoyed seeing their dates more instead of just being told about such as the cliché montage.

Beck is annoying, the wishy washy thoughts and feelings drive me insane. It's understandable with the shock, but they can literally feel each others emotions surely that's enough to realize Ollie didn't plan it.

Also annoyed me Beck seemed to settle/react more to his best friend Sandy's support and the doctor Eric's explanations then anything Ollie tried.

He just grew frustrating for me quick, and as an alpha he doesn't fit the role for me but that's somewhat a refreshing change. Although maybe given time he could fall into it better once more understood.

Anyway I'm just not invested in them enough to continue at the moment, but I may have a look at others in the series.

Ollie and Beck’s Surprise Mating . . .

Apparently Omegas no longer reproduce since Alphas have become extinct. But when Beckett Smith (“Beck”), who believes himself a human, and Oliver Grayson (“Ollie”), an Omega wolf shifter, meet each other in a club, there is no doubt about their attraction for each other. When the two are together, Beck, to his own surprise, unexpectedly transitions into an Alpha wolf shifter and knots Ollie! This situation is going to be a big shock to the shifter world in general! Ollie’s pack does get into the middle of things because the existence of an Alpha is quite an amazing occurrence. Will Ollie and Beck get to stay together as fated mates? Will others want to get in on this impossible situation and cause even more trouble? Or will Beck’s instincts kick in to protect his mate at all costs, even if he has to risk his life doing so?

Once again, those little differences in an author’s interpretation of things give us a whole new look at what we thought we knew. It’s fun to see this new aspect and find out how the author will use it to make the story spectacular and generate renewed interest!

This is a start to a shifter/ human mm mpreg series by the author.

What I enjoyed most is the different/ personal take of author on this shifter world and the apparent demise of Alpha's and what that means to the position of especially omega's and also beta's.
I did like despite Ollie and Beck, having been thrown a curveball when they mated, and all changed especially for Beck. That they found support nearby, Oscar his doctor boss/ colleague who turns out to be a dragon shifter. Created a safe haven with their shifter friends of all kinds of species and found family in a lovely progressive shifter village or town.

They have to 'battle' a very conservative clan from which Ollie came, which is 'hunting' them for their omega and alpha 'abilities'.

They get their hea with their new babies.

Audiobook
Zachary Zaba is for me always a very good listen, especially in this genre. 4,5*
Overall: 4+*

4/5 This was an unusual structure for an alpha/beta/omega story, and I definitely found it intriguing. The way omegas are treated by shifter society at large is upsetting, but the story itself is all about misfits and valuing people as they are. The idea of re-finding alphas and what that could mean for society and omegas is definitely an intriguing one. I liked Beck and Ollie a lot, and I appreciated how Beck stepped up to his responsibilities even if it was nothing like he’d expected in his life. I enjoyed the connection between Beck and Ollie, the serendipity of their second meeting, and the way they just figured everything out together (with the help of some decent friends). Ollie’s old pack was awful, and I hope he never has to deal with them again. I loved Ollie’s love of Christmas and how he’s able to make it special for Beck too.

Looking forward to the next book!

This was an interesting spin on shifters and alpha/omega tropes. Beck and Oliver were sweet together. They communicated and had reasonable fears about their future together. Because man oh man did they have a lot to deal with. I liked how they respected, supported, and comforted each other. My only complains about this book is that some scenes and inner thoughts were way to long and repetitive. I admittedly skimmed some of those parts. Also I was left with questions by the end. Why didn't someone call the police at the clinic? Why did Oliver's pack want him back so badly? What obligations is he expected to fill? Why didn't they press charges against Oliver's old pack for kidnapping and false imprisonment?

I loved this book. Beck finding out he wasn’t human at the beginning and discovering a whole new world was amazing. The connection between Beck and Ollie was lovely. So excited for the next one. Loving the mpreg books at the moment. The only reason I didn’t rate it 5 stars is I wanted to see more of the babies at the end and I wish it had a bit more spice.

so good

I have a feeling, I’m going to live this world. I can’t wait to see what couple is next. So many different shifters to pair. And the crazy that will come. These two were cute. I love how even fated, they still had to work at the relationship.
Fated is my favorite. The writing was great, the world build was great looking forward to the next story.

Had me sat on a ledge kicking my feet desperately waiting to be able to finish. I had never read an Omegaverse before this and this is quite literally the perfect entrance to it. If you have never read an Omegaverse and you start with this one and you *don’t* get hooked to the genre…well damn. You are stronger than me.

This is a full ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for me!

I don't know where to start, to be honest. I loved this book so much. I am very much a fan of omegaverse in general, but an A/B/O book needs to have a certain je ne sais quoi in order for me to rate it with 5⭐ ; this book had all the right ingredients, and it was cooked (? have I taken the metaphor too far?) to perfection. Anna can write, y'all. And honestly, this book is all the more impressive for being her first of the subgenre. I'm looking forward to seeing more omegaverse from Anna.

Some Details:
Pairing: MM, Beck (Beckett) & Ollie (Oliver)
POV: 1st Person, Dual 🗣️🗣️
Tense: Past
Angst: 2.25/5 😟😟
Spice Frequency: 3/5 🔥🔥🔥
Spice Level: 3.25/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️

When the book begins, Ollie and Beck meet in a club. Their connection is electric (and that might be an almost literal statement, since they can feel a charged current when they touch). Ollie had known he was a wolf shifter omega for his whole life, but Beck? Beck didn't know that shifters still existed, which means he also thought he was fully human. As it turns out, he's now the only known alpha, and he's got the (surprise) knot to prove it! Once they finally give into their urges, biology and instinct take over, and they find themselves in a situation that changes their lives (and maybe the lives of all shifters) irrevocably.

This book is a fast burn with instant attraction and really satisfying steamy scenes. It gripped me right from the beginning, and it was one of those books where I really believed the connection between the characters. And, goodness, both characters are so lovable. Do I agree with every decision they make and reaction they have? No. But are the decisions understandable? Absolutely. Since the book was written like the characters' reactions are naturally human (I guess I'm using the term "human" loosely, lol) instead of conspicuous plot devices, I was able to stay absorbed in the story, and that made the whole reading experience all the more enjoyable.

More Random Thoughts:
- This book has a really cool concept and discussion of shifter evolution.
- God, I love a possessive/jealous MC.
- Brandi is an amazing friend and wing person. I love when books have likable female side characters. I like Sandy, too! So this book is really winning in the female-side-character category.
- This is a good introduction to omegaverse for those who haven't read it yet because it involves needing to explain shifters and A/B/O concepts to Beck. It doesn't feel like an overly obvious explanation; it's incorporated into the story seamlessly.
- Top-notch worldbuilding
- Yes. Rimming with slick. Hell yes. Slurp it all up.
- The humor in this book is on point! I mean I guess it's subjective if you'll vibe with an author's sense of humor, but I totally vibed with this!

I received an ARC from Booksprout; this is my honest opinion of the book.

I can't believe this is on my Goodreads now.
Saw this as a random recommendation on the Storygraph explore page and started reading it with Maria as a joke/academic crashout this evening but honestly? I kind of enjoyed it. We DID get slightly drunk and read the whole thing in almost one sitting, which i recommend as a course of action and enhanced the experience. Especially the alcohol. Do not analyse the science in this (looking at you Maria) but it could be a lot worse. This book is completely ridiculous but it doesn't take itself seriously at all. This is a compliment. I like the way it calls itself out when stuff starts to get too silly but then goes full ham on the silly shit anyway. Like, we all know this is silly, but we're going for it anyway because it's fun. Very camp.
Also, unexpectedly loved Beck. I don't read romance novels, I expected the main bloke to be some rough stoic grumpy bastard. He's actually really funny lmao. His chapters were my favourite easily.
Beck is not genre savvy, Beck has been dropped into the most batshit genre of romance novel with no idea what's happening and he has a couple of valid crashouts but he adjusts very well tbh. He's also not stupid, which I like in an MC.
I will say that the book feels a bit preachy sometimes. Not religiously (although religion and Jesus exist in the world of omegaverse, incredible) but kind of in the safe sex and healthy relationships PSA way. Beck is a little TOO self-aware that being jealous is a toxic masculine trait. On the other hand I'd rather roll my eyes at that than throw a book at the wall because of some arsehole toxic masculine trait being treated as normal and good.
I did manage predict the pace of the plot for the first 50% with freakish accuracy, but I also had Actual Reactions to some of the plot twists so well done there. I also laughed quite a lot at the way Beck phrases things but that's partly because I was two cans of Strongbow in. I do love Beck.
The rest of the characters aren't super well developed but also I was not expecting Jane Austen here.

3.5 stars. It's not the best story ever and we found at least three typos/grammar errors so I feel like this didn't have an editor but I wouldn't want to approach an editor about omegaverse mpreg either tbh. Maria's kindle notes are extensive so you can probably hire her to do it. She is thorough. Actually hire both of us, it was way too much fun. We got NOTHING for our theses done but I had fun highlighting the fuck out of this one. I think if you're into cheesy cliche romance and omegaverse you'll probably really enjoy this. Definitely worth the £3.94 lol

Goodreads show my review properly the world needs to know

His Alpha Unlocked is a standalone MM omegaverse romance by Anna Sparrows, and although it is standalone, it is also the first book in a new series. This is set in a world where shifters are known by humans, and where alphas (and therefore alpha-omega bonds and pregnancies, haven't been heard of in centuries).

Ollie is a wolf shifter and an omega. He's lying low from his pack, who want him back with them to become nothing more than an indentured slave. But he loves his life in New York, and his work for another omega who is a doctor that researches the omega phenomenon. Then Ollie meets a random human in a club, Beck.

Beckett was raised in foster care and new knew that he was anything other than human. He really has nothing other than his good friend and his foster sister, both mean the world to him. Meeting Ollie was a shock and after the first night can't stop thinking about the cute man. Then they meet again and the sparks that were flying at their first meeting ignite.

The rest is a roller coaster ride of discovery as Beck finds out that he's not as human as he thought he was. He finds out his foster sister is a shifter, likewise he also finds out his best friend is one as well. On top of that, Beck and Ollie find out that they are the first known alpha-omega bonding in centuries - and there's a number of pieces of undeniable proof of just that. There's also danger from Ollie's pack to deal with, and with that we get to know more about Ollie's enigmatic boss.

So many interesting small characters have popped up through out the story, so I'm hoping that we will meet some of them again further along in the series.

I am really interested in the whole premise of the shifter town that will be a sanctuary, especially to omegas and the new alphas that are going to start popping up. And then when I read the preview for the next book I was certain that I need to read more. I can't wait to see what is in store and to find out more background of the alphas that had supposedly disappeared centuries ago.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Alphas have been extinct for generations and omegas have somewhat come to terms with their infertility. So imagine the shock both Beck and Ollie feel when during their hookup they follow natural instincts that awaken Becks latent Alpha, they form a mate bond and Ollie ends up knocked up. Can these two navigate all the new and sudden changes to their realities while getting to know each other and facing threats from outsiders because of who and what they are?

I like a good shifter romance now and then, and this one was a fairly good start to this new omegaverse series. The pacing wasn't always consistent, and the storyline felt rushed. Time jumps skipped over some of the moments I would have liked to see, but the characters were fun. Despite some of the heavier themes used, the story itself never felt too angsty or full of unnecessary drama. In fact, there were things left unresolved/unanswered in regards to Ollie's pack and their motivations for doing the things they did that I feel should have at least been somewhat included so we could understand and feel more invested in the "why" of it all, but I'm presuming/hoping more will be revealed as the series continues.

I liked both Beck's and Ollie's characters and found the world-building easy to follow and the introduction of the different shifter characters interesting and obviously setting the stage for subsequent books in the series. This is a "doesn't take itself too seriously" kind of read and is a quick read that offers some escapism from reality and the spice was good. Omegaverse and Mpreg aren't something I've read much of in the past, and from my limited experience with them, I think they were done well here. It's a bit cheesy and clichéd, and yet I had a fun time with it. I was entertained enough that I will pick up book 2 at some point. 🌶🌶

"I was gay. Surprise babies weren't supposed to be a thing for me. I wasn't supposed to be able to accidentally get people pregnant. That was one of the many benefits of sleeping with other cis gendered men. Or, at least, it had been until I magically changed species mid-coitus and quite obviously knocked another man up.
Great job, Beckett."

This is definitely one of those books where you should know what you like beforehand.

You don’t like the surprise pregnancy trope? Don’t read this book.
Not a fan of omegaverse and all it entails (mpreg, knotting, mating, biting)? This is not for you.
You have a hard time with books about characters being pressured and guilted by their families? Being hunted by people they once considered their pack? Maybe pass on this one.
You’re over characters discovering their secret designation? Fine, move along.

Lucky for me, I enjoy all of these things, and having them all together in one book worked out great. And adding the fact that it was the alpha who didn’t know he was an alpha (or even a shifter) was the cherry on top. I feel like that’s a popular trope as well, but it’s often the omegas who don’t know what they are (at least that’s my experience), so this was refreshing for me, and I really enjoyed it. Another thing I really liked was that there wasn’t just one kind of shifter; it just makes things more interesting. And it may or may not make me excited for a certain reptilian shifter in the future.
But that is then and this is now. Ollie and Beck were so sweet together. They were pushed from one overwhelming and surprising situation to the next and they handled it all so well. They sticked together through all the changes (surprise, you're an alpha, surprise, we are bonded, surprise, I am pregnant, surprise, it's twins, etc.) and through multiple kidnapping attempts, all while barely knowing one another. But they learned to trust and lean on each other fast. I just really liked how their relationship progresses.

What else is there to say?
Found family (or rather found pack) vibes? Check
Sassy Omega with a heart of gold? Check
Protective Alpha who would do anything for his mate? Check
Interesting side characters that make me excited for the upcoming series? Also check

I received an ARC for this book and this is my honest opinion.

“His Alpha Unlocked” by Anna Sparrows is refreshing. I’ve read a moderate amount of books with shifters and mpreg and I enjoyed how real this book is. There are a lot of surprises and a lot of change for the characters and it’s not all sugar coated and smooth sailing.

Ollie and Beck are adorable together. There is a fun sense of discovery as they learn about each other and try to figure out their new reality. I like how it’s not all perfect, there is tension, and this make their relationship and the world feel more real. It isn’t a mythical world where the laws of nature we are used to don’t work. Shifters exist, they have some extra abilities and can change shape, but at the same time there really isn’t anything extra magical about them as a whole. Male omegas can get pregnant in this world, but it’s biological. Alphas have been thought to be extinct in this world so a part of this book is the characters trying to relearn or discover the things forgotten, like the physiology behind pregnant omegas. It’s science, not magic. It’s the same with anything like injuries. Shifting shape will not magically heal an injury and shifters can still get sick from some things and aren’t magically immune to everything.

There is a time jump where their relationship is a bit glossed over but it’s also nice not to have random and unimportant filler added. There are no major info dumps that set up this new world, and information is revealed as needed (for the most part.) There are a few things that are in the so good it rings false category, but at the same time it’s tempered by how much “real” is still in this book. It reads almost like a contemporary book that just so happens to have shifters, secondary genders and mpreg.

I can’t wait to read more books in this series and I hope the author continues to write omegaverse.

Fun Book with Definite Potential

I always love a good shifter romance and this one was a good start into a new omegaverse! There were some flaws in the pace and storyline but the characters were fun and despite some of the more heavy storylines, it never felt too angsty or full of unnecessary drama.

Beck and Ollie were adorable from the start. I enjoyed how they met and felt this instant attraction but didn’t act on it at first. That rarely happens in a fated mates / shifter book but it was nice to see their genuine pull to one another and desire to reconnect.

Once things got going the story moved very quickly, sometimes too quickly. I wanted a bit more time to see the two of them bonding and building genuine feelings for one another. I wish the pregnancy took a bit longer to develop instead of coming from their first time together but maybe that will be a bigger part in later books.

The drama with Ollie’s old pack was a bit overwhelming sometimes without more context. I assume future books will delve into it more but for now it remains a big question mark and I wish a bit more had been revealed or some more backstory had been included.

I’m definitely intrigued by the story and how it’s setting the stage for future couples and books but I hope we get a bit of a slower pacing next time. The characters are intriguing and fun but I want a bit more time with them and their stories to really become connected to them. And I’m hoping we get a bit more detail and consideration into the characters who will be future alphas in the story. The storyline with Brandi confused me greatly since it was thrown in with just a few short sentences and then basically ignored as if it was perfectly normal.

📝 Review & thoughts:
This omegaverse was original. In this world, alphas are believed to be extinct, with the last ones that died a couple hundred years before.

It was refreshing to see alphas as the rare gender instead of omegas.

It was a cute and sweet romance, it dragged a little at times for me and sometimes it felt a little cheesy, but overall it was entertaining.

Ollie and Beck have a very shocking and eventful journey ahead of them.
This is a world where it is known shifters exist, but they tend to keep themselves hidden as humans have had serious issues in the past, Alpha's are believed to be extinct, and because of this, omega's are often thought to be useless.
From the moment they met, Ollie and Beck had a shocking need to be with one another, but Ollie first wants to admit to a human Beck, that he is an omega wolf. Beck has no issues with that, until he finds himself reacting and changing in unexpected ways - he is not human, but a latent Alpha.
This is the first of many surprises for the two men - some will be good and others definitely not. They stick together and grow their bond, having great friends and allies to help them through the ordeals to come. Being mated leads them to a deeper connection, a genuine love, and more.
Their HEA is a bit overshadowed by Ollie's cult-like family and pack continuing to be a potential threat - as well as other factions, including humans, which leaves their story feeling unfinished. It does, however, leave things open for the story to continue in future books, and with new MC's.
Some of the great things about this book are the various supportive friends and the new sanctuary they are building together. The downside is that parts of it seemed to drag.
