Only 90-something pages and maybe 10 of them are useful

When I read Neil Dagger’s other ChatGPT book (“ChatGPT Millionaire”), I think I said that it’s only really useful if you’re brand new to ChatGPT. While this book is less obviously written by ChatGPT, it may also be even less useful.

I don’t know how this one ended up in my Kindle library — I think I may have accidentally preordered it in response to a promise for some other content (which I don’t think I received). But, once this popped up in my library, I figured I might as well read it, especially once I saw how short it was.

I came in with low expectations and my expectations were met: 90% fluff, 10% substance, and 90% of the “substance” was stuff I already knew.

Dagger spends a significant chunk of the book summarizing developments in the world of AI and discussing ethical quandaries of using AI before even getting into the topic promised in the title: Slipping past AI Detectors.

Then he even has the nerve to preach about responsible use of his detection-avoiding advice, saying you shouldn’t be using AI to “cheat” in any way. This is likely a self-conscious response to critics of his work and of using AI to create works like his, but bro, you’re a grifter teaching others how to grift. Just own it. Your target audience won’t judge you for it.

In any case, his explanations of how AI detectors work and his ChatGPT prompts for fooling AI detectors do seem to work most of the time, but like I said, it takes up maybe 10% of the book.

Let me save you the time of reading this and tell you how to pass AI detection…

Step 1) Take what ChatGPT or whatever other AI gives you and copy/paste it into a Word doc.

Step 2) Rewrite what it gave you, in your own words and in your authentic voice.

Step 3) Publish!

Does rewriting it require a little more time/effort? Sure, but it’s what good writers do with ChatGPT regardless of whether they’re worried about AI detection.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

The ChatGPT Ninja: Slipping Past AI Detectors by Neil Dagger is a compelling read for anyone intrigued by the intersection of artificial intelligence and daily life. Dagger’s book is not just a manual; it’s a thought-provoking exploration of the ethical and practical implications of using AI tools like ChatGPT in a world increasingly vigilant against AI-generated content.

The book is structured as a step-by-step guide, offering readers strategies to use ChatGPT effectively while avoiding detection by AI content detectors. Dagger delves into the mechanics of how these detectors work and provides insight into who uses them and why. The narrative is engaging, filled with real-world scenarios that highlight the tactical advantages of AI tools and the resistance they face from institutions clinging to the status quo.

One of the book’s strengths is its practicality. It includes a walkthrough of what to do if one is accused of using AI-generated content and how to replicate one’s writing style using generative AI, which is invaluable for maintaining authenticity. Moreover, Dagger’s inclusion of a list of 10 amazing AI tools is a treasure trove for readers looking to expand their AI toolkit.

However, the book is not without its controversies. Dagger’s approach to “slipping past” detectors could be seen as advocating for deception, raising questions about honesty and transparency in academic and professional settings. This moral gray area is where the book truly shines, prompting readers to consider the broader implications of AI in society.

A delight for the time-strapped student or executive. The book gives you a look below the hood without treating you like a 5-year-old or padding pages with extraneous content. What I like is that there is no attempt to dress this book at all. It has the flow and structure aligned with the topic and knowledge-crunching requirements of the reader. The book is a short read and this is how you want it to be. All the info is in there, and you'll finish it in two reading sessions. Personally, this is the stuff I wanted to know for a long time. But didn't dare ask Google due to the sheer volume of fragmented content it would throw back at me.

Helpful

Very interesting book—The ChatGPT Ninja—all about getting past those so-called “AI detectors.” Some people say it can’t be done. Fake news! This guy, Neil Dagger, he says otherwise. He gives you tricks, tips—some of them actually work. Not all of it is gold, and some parts could’ve been much stronger, believe me, but he’s got the right mindset. If you’re into writing with AI and don’t want the robots—or professors—finding out, this is worth a read. Not perfect, but pretty clever. Three stars—because I’m fair.

Although I learned little in this book, it's also a short book.
Here's what I learned:
1) How you write your prompt has huge impact. You can ask ChatGPT to answer without sounding like ChatGPT! I like to ask it to write humorous responses because they're less likely to trigger an AI sleuth.

2) RUNWAYML is an exciting GPT that creates videos.

Although this book will stay relevant throughout 2024, by 2025, you need to look elsewhere.
Read it while it's hot of the presses!

An excellent how-to book

I was impressed by the author's grasp of the pitfalls and issues which helps and hinders the use of ChatGPT and AI. I learned more sophisticated techniques and challenges using AI detection. It was more than I knew using ChatGPT more intelligently. Kudos to Mr. Dagger!

AI is the future! miss this book and you are stuck in the past

Quick and easy read. Provides a great overview of what AI generators and detectors are transforming into. You won’t retreat reading it. I’m already using the different prompts he recommends.

Not what you think

The title of this book should have been “Understanding AI”. Discussing the new world upon us. Great look into the many issues of Ai, but falls short on the delivery of Ninja status

Great example prompts

I felt there was a little too much background/defining/educating at the beginning of the book, but later on the example prompts were well worth the wait.

Better ending was a surprise

Rather brief study on AI. I would not recommend buying the book other than personal interest in the author and a cumulative collection of his writings.

I enjoyed it

Very interesting, but some of the techniques don't work anymore. I still found it useful. Ar the end of the book there are some nice Prompt examples.

I picked this up to learn more about how students might potentially manipulate ChatGPT to pass off as their own writing -- and so the overview of how to adapt voice/tone/syntax through multi-step prompts was interesting. I found more here than I thought I would - a discussion of AI and ethics, contextual information on the development and adoption of AI, etc., and so that was surprising, though this extra content isn't much more than one could find online anyways. The book also includes a list of AI tools one might test, and it included Otter.ai, a favorite transcription tool of mine and my students. Overall, the quality of the writing isn't anything special - I found myself asking how much of the book had been written with ChatGPT, but it is a quick read!
