This magically illustrated gamebook plunges you into a story with a difference - one where the hero is YOU. Woken one night by a bang at the door, you creep to the window and see five hooded strangers below. The leader looks up and beckons you down. What do you do? Open the door, play for time, or escape through the window out back? The choice is yours...
From this point onwards you are in control of an epic adventure, and your survival depends upon the decisions you make. Who to fight? Who to trust? In a book where nothing is as it seems, even the pictures hold secrets that must be unlocked. But as you race across land, sea and sky, one thing becomes it's not just your fate that hangs in the balance - it's the fate of the entire kingdom.
Bringing together a sweeping story, beautifully illustrated picture puzzles and an exciting combat system, this is an adventure that will have you gripped from beginning to end.
Before joining Usborne, Simon worked in Moscow as sports editor for a local paper. These days he writes about things that aren't actually real, but are very important nevertheless. Mysteries and monsters and impossible quests in faraway realms that you won't find on any map. All the sort of stuff he loved as a child, basically. (And still does.)
This book was a gem. I worked through it with my 8-year-old daughter and we had loads of fun.
Shadow Chaser is a 'choose your own adventure' book. For anyone unfamiliar with the genre, the book basically offers a fantasy roleplay with you (the reader) as the hero. Typically, you'll read about a page or a half-page of the story and then get confronted with a choice to make. If you make Choice A, you'll get directed to one page to continue your quest; if you make Choice B, you'll get sent to a different page - and so on. There are, in effect, many different routes through the book, all of them twisting and turning and crossing each other. Very rarely will two readers ever share exactly the same journey. Sometimes you'll have to solve a puzzle to continue with your quest, other times you'll have to 'battle' an enemy - in which case you'll need dice, 'life points', 'damage points', and a good dose of luck. And, of course, at every turn, you run the risk of 'dying' and your quest is over.
These books first came out in the 1980s (I think?) So it was a bit of a nostalgia trip for me to pick one up and work through it with my daughter. But I have to say this book is so much better than the ones I remember. The illustrations are more imaginative, the puzzles are tricksier, and the quality of the writing so much higher. It was a delight. Many congrats to the author, the illustrator, and (...you won't hear me say this too often...) the publisher as well. So often in our household, when we've stumbled on a particularly imaginative and well produced children's book, it's turned out to be Usborne.
Last note: the book was probably a bit too advanced for my 8-yr-old to have managed alone. Would say this is best suited for 10-16 years.

A creepy story that is something to play. In this book you make the decisions, not only that you also play a game by yourself or with your family. Really good illustrations, read this book if you dare.
Ok so i enjoyed this book considering it was like a game as well , sometimes i thought the clues were a little hard especially for a 9 year old , as its age range is 9- 12 . I loved how you could choose your turns and choices in the book . you were basically thrown in straight away , deciding the path you wanted to take . I like the characters and the world we were in as well , the villan was good too , and the things you had to do to survive were great and gives you something to think about in this book , But sometimes you are thrown into a situation with not much information , and if this book is ranged 9-12 then im not sure they would be ever able to finish this story let alone find the ending of it all as well as you have to work out things to carry on , and find the next page entry ... But i do think a 14 to 16 year old will have better luck . great for teens , not so much for 9-12 .
but thought through well , liked the different characters in this book, and twists and turns . 3 out of 5 *
it is a strong story but i just think the age 9 category may be a little young .. but that is my opinon .
First of all, y’all this is an interactive choose your own path sort of story. While I only did one path before marking this as read, I can say. This is really fun. Sure I died not long after starting but it was amusing. Now if you excuse me I’m gonna try another path.
I read The Boy in the Book last month, a non-fiction about a man who went on an adventure to find out about the boy who wrote in his old Choose Your Own Adventure books. And I just read another CYOA type of book written for children pretty recently as well. They just reminded me of my own childhood reading such books, and then upgrading to playing such games (visual novel style games) which I still do play. So imagine my surprise when I saw this book. I knew I had to have it!
And it turned out to be way better than I expected. The blurb didn't say much about what it's about, because you're basically being chased by some unknown entities without knowing why you're hunted. There are so many endings, all of them are bad, except for the one good, true ending.
I had so much fun playing the game! The story was compelling, I loved the way it was written. You need pencil/pen and two die to play the game, but if you don't have the die, you can use virtual ones, which you can access using the QR code provided in the book.
I suppose the downside of this book is that you have to constantly redo things to get to the good ending (computer/phone/console games would have saved, kept track of things and allowed you to skip the courses you've already chosen). To completely read the book, I actually made markings so that I could read everything once I got the good ending. There were not a lot that I missed though, because I had bad endings so many times before I got to the real ending! It was fun nonetheless, and I hope Usborne would make a series of this (the website puts it under a series, but this is the only book in said series).
My son is 6 and turns 7 in a few months. He got hooked on the early choose your own adventure books and began to ask for choose your own adventure versions of everything. He particularly liked how exploration was an aspect of the early games and would replay the books on his own, going through the different pathways that the book could give him. This book kind of gave him that same kind of exploration - he really liked the visual puzzles and as a co-reader it gave us another dimension within the narrative to bond over. We loved how the illustrations were detailed and those details played into the actual plot line. I felt the narrative was really strong and the story moved forward really naturally. The plot twists were fun too. I would recommend this book to younger readers who have experienced a little bit of choose your own style literature already because the action is not particularly graphic and the illustrations are never depict anything inappropriate as a Fighting Fantasy book might. I think that preteens might need help with some vocabulary and some of the puzzles (we got stuck on one puzzle for days 😂). As an adult I really appreciated the quality of the writing and plot - it was a good escape to share with my kid after a busy day at work. One of the best choose your own adventure type stories we’ve read in a while and we are looking forward to the author’s future CYOA releases. I hope that the author creates a female protagonist one day so that my daughter can be a hero too.

It's such a great concept, but I couldn't get into the story, because the scenes were so short. Before they can pull you in, you have to flip the pages or solve a puzzle again. Also, some of the puzzles were too hard. I died 4 times, but I didn't want my quest to end so suddenly and start over, so I pretended not to have died.
I think the story is probably great, but like I said, I couldn't really get into it. It would've been much better with normal chapter length and less choices, then you can enjoy the story ánd the choices. Now I was flipping pages more than I was reading.
I did like the idea of different skills and fighting, but if you're unlucky in rolling dice, like I am, you'll die very quickly. Also, there were lots of objects I carried that I couldn't use anywhere.
All in all, a great concept, but it didn't get past that. I'm curious to read a 'normal' story by this writer though.
I borrowed this from my local library to play during my breaks. The book is very addictive! It's super fun to jump from one page to the other. I would recommend saving your progression (noting the number you are on before you make a choice) because choices have consequences!
I enjoyed the mechanics of the game. Having different paths to finish the story is great! As an adult, I did find some puzzles quite obscure, and kids (and me) might need extra help to get through some riddles.
The story is a classic fantasy chosen one story, which is really well-written for a middle grade book! I enjoyed following the story and meeting all the characters. I did find the end quite flat. After so much effort (those puzzles were hard, okay!!!), I expected a more engaging ending.
All in all, it is a great book and a good introduction to dnd for kids and numerically challenged adults. I'll definitely borrow more from the library.
Shadow chaser is a creepy and surreal tale where you (the reader) calls the shots! This book is filled with interesting puzzles and riddles that are geniunely challenging (I even resorted to asking my fiancé for help!). This is by far the longest game book i've read so far and found myself taking less risks the closer I got to the end to avoid restarting.
In truth, I think the book would have been more enjoyable if there was multiple endings that didn't end in death. The Goosebumps choose your own adventure series is a perfect example where the reader has the option of multiple endings. This makes readers more likely to read the book multiple times to get alternative endings.
Overall this is a great book that I would recommend to anyone interested in fantasy novels or board games. As always with Usborne releases the quality of the book is second to none!
I read the Bulgarian edition, which is not yet on Goodreads.
This is a classic gamebook with over 400 episodes, plenty of puzzles, hidden links, and a tiny maze. It is long, took me 3 days to complete. It's not too difficult, although some of the puzzles are challenging. Others are trivial. The mix is ... unusual. Not sure who the target reader is. Perhaps a teenager or a kid who goes over the episodes with a parent. A 10-12-year-old could not solve most puzzles, IMO.
The most difficult gamebooks have keywords and items that feel impossible to obtain. You can reach the end and the key is missing. Here, it's more like - here's a puzzle, when you solve it, turn to the episode that's the solution.
Overall, I had good times reading it. Looking forward to seeing the continuation.
Great book, would’ve given it a 5 star rating but I didn’t for the reason below. I had gotten really far into the story and was enjoying it a bunch, but suddenly I got brought to a number that I had already read. I saved Casper ages ago, and then suddenly I was back at his town meeting him for the first time. Printing mistake. I would’ve just gone back to my previous choose and gone a different way, but there is no way of knowing what your last log was unless your memory is absolutely perfect.
I recommend this, would be good for a road trip or flight, but this little bug rlly annoyed me, I’ll probably try again in a couple months once I’m over my grudge. :)
This is an interactive, choose your own story adventure book. It was very interesting, and if you don’t want to write in the book be sure to have a notebook nearby. I had a hard time following the story sometimes since you have to flip through the book so much, but it would definitely be fun to read/play over and over again. I died so I didn’t make it to the ending. I’m not sure if I’ll try again since the story really didn’t interest me that much, but I’m sure anyone who has a kid that enjoys creepy adventure stories and games would love it!
Ok, as a fun concept where you choose your own options etc, it was fun. But after constantly ‘dying’ it started to lose its appeal. I never managed to finish the story (maybe I should have lied and pretended I hadn’t died each time it happened, I don’t know) so I can’t comment too much on that. What I DID manage to read was good if a little creepy. The problem I had was the combat stages. I never seemed to win and I seemed to always come unstuck there. So I loved the story/concept, I just wish I had a little more patience for the rest of it!
Takes me back to my childhood. This is a choose your own adventure book mixed with w video game. You have multiple skills that actually affect the playthrough. I highly reccomend this book. However, it is rated for 10+. In my opinion it would be to hard for a 10 year old as both my wife, and I died multiple times, and some of the puzzles were very challenging.
A fun little book! I like the dice element and this would be a great introduction to DnD! Some of the puzzle were genuinely tricky but all were pretty fun. Combat was kind of annoying, it’s actually difficult to win. I wanted to read the story to the end so I lowkey cheated the combat a bit….shhhh. Flipping around takes you out of the immersion a bit but overall, cute!
This was an excellent choose your own adventure with a great story with very complex paths. I was reading it to see if my kids would enjoy it and I think they’ll devour it. Additionally the puzzles were quite fun to solve!
