John Lindley Byrne is a British-born Canadian-American author and artist of comic books. Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on nearly every major American superhero.
Byrne's better-known work has been on Marvel Comics' X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics’ Superman franchise. Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciler, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he also started inking his own pencils). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited. He also wrote the first issues of Mike Mignola's Hellboy series and produced a number of Star Trek comics for IDW Publishing.

A different take on Supergirl, but fun nonetheless...

I thought their Superman/legion storyline from a bit ago where it was revealed that SuperBoy came from a pocket dimension created by the time trapper was crazy…but now they have doubled down on it in an even more insane way!! And honestly I’m rocking with the insanity! It’s finally time for supergirl to reveal herself, but what’s this? The issue opens on a mysterious world protected by a dome that is constantly being hit by explosions, and within is a bunch of very high tech people work very limited time and they have a plan that requires Superman, but it relies on him helping them and starts with supergirl making contact! What in the world is happening?!
As we left off from Superman leaving the doom patrol behind, he very quickly noticed his flying tail…so after a bit of spinning around he is able to catch her by surprise from behind…only for supergirl to drop the illusion to reveal herself as Lana Lang?! And this is not just a trick…this is Lana Lang in a molecular level, and she claims that she got powers from Lex Luthor?! But the powers are not like Superman’s in the slightest, even if she wears the same crest, her memories are still broken and she believes that metropolis has been destroyed. Superman made the mistake of getting her confused and revived a psycho kinetic blast, and then once he returned he found that she turned herself invisible! After getting knocked into the ground a second time, he determined that she more than likely doesn’t have x-ray vision, and he decides to tunnel his way over to Lana’s farm to try and find out what could of happened. But once he arrives he finds Lana and his parents tied up in the basement!!
It’s upon seeing them perfectly fine that things start to click with Superman and he decides it’s time for some serious disillusioning. He proceeds to fly up and get supergirl’s attention to leave her chase him all the way to metropolis, where she can finally see for certain that it is still there. Now that she’s is in a bit more of an understanding mood, he flies Lana over to lexcorp, where a very surprised and pissed off Lex hides his shiny new hand immediately. But once again upon seeing Lex she didn’t recognize him as her Lex at all. With that now confirmed they flew away and Superman discussed what he has now determined…she is from a different universe. A universe that he came into contact with a while back with the legion of super-heroes, a world the time trapper built which held the life of SuperBoy. She is from that world and after SuperBoy never returned, in fact dying in the pages of legion, it seems the world has called into a bit of trouble. For Superman it’s only been a few weeks…but for them it’s been 10 years! In that world Pete was one of the first to find Superman and help him, and looking back at the start it seems that he was one of the people in the high tech shield. But the other person? Well it turns out Superman will get to meet him himself, as Lana’s memories have now returned she is able to immediately teleport Clark and herself to that alternate world to try and enlist his help. So it’s no wonder that the man with the glorious head of red hair…is none other than their Lex Luthor! I do find it funny that she landed in this world then somehow looked like supergirl just to trick the readers or something, and it sucks that supergirl isn’t back yet…but at least this storyline is rocking and rolling now.

Finally the girl in the ‘Superman’ costume has caught up with the Man of Steel himself!
She is revealed to be Lana Lang! And she was given her powers by the greatest hero she knows… Lex Luthor??
After Supes confuses ‘Supergirl’, she uses a power the Kryptonian doesn’t have.
He tunnels underground to the Lane farm to see Ma and Pa Kent and… Lana tied up!
Finally understanding helps Superman help ‘Supergirl’ regain her memories, that she is from another universe!
Immediately, both beings are teleported to that alternate universe.
This issue was mostly in two page spreads. I liked how the long panels looked though, not sure if the majority of the issue had to be like that.

I like this Supergirl Saga. It builds to a bigger alternate reality war that I’m surprised wasn’t promoted to a full fledged DC Event. Probably because Byrne was weeks away from leaving.
