King of Country

Rate this book
Kyle Spencer is the king of country music.
She’s the city girl, sent to talk him into returning to the stage…

Piper Egan landed her dream job straight out of college—working at Empire Records. But instead of discovering new talent and changing lives, like she’d hoped, her time is spent taking meeting notes and catering to spoiled celebrities. When the chance to change that finally appears, she should be thrilled.

Unfortunately, Piper’s promotion involves the charming cowboy she’s spent years attempting to avoid. And flying to middle of nowhere, Texas, in a desperate attempt to talk the king of country music into returning to the stage.

It’s a work trip with no boundaries. Piper is determined to head back to New York with a signed contract in hand, no matter what it takes. But that plan becomes complicated when she’s greeted by a scowl instead of Kyle’s trademark grin. Becomes challenging when she glimpses the genuine guy beneath the superstar. Becomes impossible when she learns the reason he walked away from the spotlight.

When she realizes…her only plan should have been to protect her heart.

”red hair, blue sheets,
white lies, pink cheeks.”

this was one of those books that brought you all the feelings. I laughed, cried, cringed, and gasped. I didn't even realize I was reading as I devoured it, which is why I absolutely adore C.W. Farnsworth's plume. the author's writing is always immaculately pleasant to explore and comforting to immerse oneself among its words.

"Kyle Spencer is consuming.”

the story begins with a charming, but also hilarious, first encounter. I adored the way the reverse grumpyXsunshine arc was crafted in that scene because mingled with the workplace atmosphere it depicted perfectly the protagonists’ personalities and dynamic. Piper, the female protagonist, had a complete aversion for country music, especially for Kyle, the male protagonist alias King of Country. despite being kind of his subordinate— employed as an assistant at the label that represented him, she didn't hesitate to speak her mind fearlessly.

"there’s an immediate flash of déjà vu, back to the first moment I saw her in a different kitchen. I doubt that moment has stuck in her head the way it’s remained in mine.”

from that point on, he became obsessed with her, even though he knew she couldn't stand him, at all. remembering every single detail about her, observing her religiously at every team-meeting and writing heartfelt songs about her. a year after their first meet-cute, he decided to dissolve himself from the music universe. and surprise, surprise m she is the one expedited to his hometown to dissuade him from abandoning his career and to persuade him to resign a new contact with the label.

"there’s a glowing warmth in my chest I only experience around him. It feels like being in the perfect place at the perfect time.
with the perfect person."

I loved the sass and tenacious facets of the female protagonist's personality, and I adored how the male main character struggled to act like a complete moron to scare her away and obviously failed. the romance is, i believe, one of the slowest this author has ever written and it was absolutely beautifully and stunningly executed. the palpable sexual tension rythmed with their heart-to-heart declarations and accidental touches built the perfect suffocating atmosphere around the spluttering slow burn romance.

"we.
a little of the tension dissipates as soon as I hear it. such a small, short word, packed with so much significance. for years, I had a team. but I wasn’t part of the team."

the storyline was given some color by the side characters, particularly Mabel. It was difficult to decipher certain aspects of Kyle's past that were obscure throughout the storytelling. therefore, the conversations with the secondary characters were captivating and fascinating to read because they helped to comprehend certain details.

P.S.: I was completely unaware of the plot twist coming but loved it anyway.

“she’s leaving.
I’m staying.”

“She looks good in anything. But wearing the beat-up hat I’ve had since high school? She looks like mine.” 🤠💗

Summary: famous country music singer decides he is done with his label and music. He wants to go back to his small town in Texas and work on his family farm. Life is much simpler there and he feels he can be his true self-no flashing lights and parties. What he does not expect is the beautiful, feisty red headed girl named piper to be here in Texas trying to get him to resign to the label.

This is a sloowwww burn. There is spice but it doesn’t happen until the later portion of the book. If you want to get your freak on any sooner I would try a different book.

Kyle our MMC is a country singer wanting to take a break from music to help out around his family’s farm in Texas. He’s straightforward, grumpy, man of few words but such a gentleman. He appears to be the arrogant, confident country star but he’s a true country boy at heart and doesn’t care about money or fine things.

Piper our FMC is strong willed and determined. She’s from New York and is not a country boot wearing gal at all. She’s a feisty red head and she does not take no for an answer. When she arrived to the small town in Texas wearing heels I was cackling and thinking baby girl you will not last long wearing those shoes 🤭

“What was what about?” “You acting jealous.” Instead of denying it, I tell her the truth. “I wasn’t acting.” 🥵

Tropes:
- Forced proximity
- Opposites attract
- GrumpyXsunshine
- He FALLS first 💞

Overall this was a pretty okay read but nothing spectacular. The relationship between the main characters was flat at times and the first half of book is very slow. There were some swoony moments and I smiled 😊 but this didn’t make me want to put on my cowgirl hat and move to Texas.

Are you kidding me??? This was SOOOO GOOD.
This is the first C.W. Farnsworth book I’ve ever read and I was instantly hooked. I absolutely love her writing style. This gave me Flawless by Elsie Silver vibes and even a little bit of All Rhodes Lead Here by Mariana Zapata because of the grumpy MMC and slow burn.

I literally ate this up. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you love:

✨cowboy
✨grumpy sunshine
✨feisty FMC
✨forced proximity
✨country singer

"But I'll write a song that has nothing to do with beer or trucks or heartbreak, just for you."

Kyle Spencer is the King of Country.
He is known and liked all across the country.
Except he refuses to resign at his record label.
So they send Piper Egan, the woman who made an impression on him the first time around and he hasn't been able to forget about her.
No matter who they send, Kyle Spencer said he would say no.
But he didn't plan on them sending her…

"And now, she's here, making a mess out of what was supposed to be an easy exit."

Piper Egan comes from a big family.
The "Black Sheep" of a family full of cops. She works in music.
So when an opportunity comes up for a work trip to Texas she can't say no.
Even if that trip includes going to a small farm to convince one of the biggest country artists to resign.
Will Piper be up for the challenge? Will she prove herself to her job and her family?
Or will she get more than she bargained for?

"I'm not going to make this easy on him. If he wants me to leave, he'll have to make me."

I received an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.

Piper Egan has one mission.
To get Kyle Spencer, beloved country music star to resign his contract.
Should be easy right?
Wrong. Because Kyle Spencer will not sign under any circumstances.
And he will tell that to whoever the label will send down to his farm.
But they didn't count on them sending the red head that he met once that he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about…

"No one else has ever captured my attention as completely and easily as Piper manages to do anytime she's in the same space as me."

I am not exaggerating when I tell you that THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING!!
For the record, I have watched a couple of seasons of Nashville (don't judge) and this. This is what I was missing because this sucked me in so well!!

"But for some reason, it suddenly feels like everything in my life is rotating around the decisions Piper makes instead of the other way around."

Piper Egan is a spit fire. Legit love her. She will prove to Kyle Spencer that no matter what he does, he will not chase her away. And her whole family story with her brothers and her parents, she just wants to pursue music and their whole approach to that. I felt that. And she sings!!! I mean come on!!

"I just need to figure out what changed his mind so I can unchange it."

And then you have Kyle Spencer. The grumpy very successful country star. Stubborn does not even begin to describe him. And whatever Piper dishes he has an answer right there for her because THE BANTER WAS EVERYTHING PEOPLE!!

"But something about Piper ignites an inability to back down when I'd defer with anyone else."

As you can see the playlist will be filled with country songs but it fits and it's my playlist so…

I'm almost done reading King of Country and don't want it to end (88%, trying to make it last😅)!
It's such a compelling opposites attract/city girl meets farm boy/FORCED PROXIMITY/small town/slow burn/celebrity romance!
He’s a country music sensation, she hates country music, he’s set to put the mic down and live a quiet life on his inherited Texas cattle ranch, she’s the person the music label sends all the way from New York to make him change his mind.
Plenty of banter, low angst—just enough to pull at your heartstrings, small town charm and plenty of spice!
So SO good!

Ugh, this audio was everything. If Z Webber narrates it, I’m gonna listen. Country boy that grew up on a farm in TX that becomes a HUGE country music star - sign me up everytime! Piper, sent from his record label in hopes to get him to renew his contract has to stay with him and his family for a few days in hopes to convince Kyle to come back to music. Kyle has his reasons not to though, but you must read to find out. I loved this book!! It had some really good moments and I will definitely be reading this author’s books again.

"Maybe you underestimated me."
"Maybe you misjudged me."

What a lovely surprise of a book! <3 This one was one of those cases when you randomly decide to pick up a book without knowing anything about it and it ends up being a GREAT idea. This was also my first book from this author and now I'm excited to check out more!

With seemingly two different worlds colliding, Kyle and Piper's story was lovely to follow. Both of them were ridiculously stubborn and without the people around them knocking some sense into the, they'd be a lost cause let me tell you. 🥲 They were distinctive characters and they had their own personalities, dreams, wishes, which I appreciate so much in a romance book. Both sides had their valid reasons when it came to a part of the plot (i.e. getting Kyle to agree to resign his contract) and it was interesting to read about Kyle's view of how negative some aspects of fame could be.

I 100% LIVED for the domesticity in this - all the cozy, cute, domestic vibes we were getting even if these two stubborn fools refused to acknowledge their attraction. 🤭 It was the slow realisation, the acts of kindness, the thoughtfulness, the actual owning up for saying the wrong thing. 🥹🤍 And realistic conversations too!

"But I'll write a song that has nothing to do with beer or trucks or heartbreak, just for you." 🫶

The side characters were great too! I'm SO tempted to go and read the two books with characters from this one - you don't need to read them before this to follow this story - but I would love to get all the background info! Adding them to the ever-growing tbr pile!

Overall, a cosy read for sure. It gives you all those angsty, small-town feelings whilst combining everything with a little glimpse of glamour.

Why is it that every time I read anything with country music references that I want to go and watch Nashville?! lmao 🫣

This book is such a PERFECT slow burn. While reading it, I found myself thinking back to when I was reading The Simple Wild, and how KA Tucker wove in family, tragedy, opposites attract, and a sense of belonging / figure out what to do next with your life. Though these two stories are so incredibly different, I haven't felt that way about a book in a long time.

Kyle and Piper run into each other for years because she works at his label, and he's always admired her from afar but never been able to have 1;1 time with her. At the beginning of our story, Piper finds out she's being sent down to Texas to convince Kyle not to leave the label. But then she finds out why he's leaving and everything changes. Not only is Kyle not the charming and amenable person she thought he was, he's downright pissed that she's there and not willing to budge.

The more time they spend together, the more Kyle wants to open up to Piper and let her in on why he's not interested in resigning, and the more Piper finds herself challenging her dream job and goals.

I really, really loved this book. My only constructive feedback was that I think we could have been let in a little more to how Piper's feelings were developing. I really felt it with Kyle, but not as much with Piper.

loved this! really enjoyed this take on a celebrity romance and the forced proximity piece to it. piper and kyle have really great banter and as they slowly open up to one another, their relationship takes on a new level of intimacy neither one expected. the small details that kyle remembers about piper were really sweet. their flirting and back and forth was done really well and reminded me a lot of fake empire.

🎧🎧AUDIOBOOK REVIEW🎧🎧

If you're reading this, and you have yet to experience this story or this author, DO IT NOW!

Seriously, RIGHT NOW!

I’ve had the worst luck the last couple of months with my reading/listening experiences and this book just swooped right in and erased every single frustration I’d been carrying around over these stories! I mean it just bulldozed right thru the entire stack and made my heart sing loud and off key lol!! (obvs, not every single book has frustrated me these last couple of months, but the count is really high, and I was getting #twitchy)

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Standing ovation round of applause for C.W. Farnsworth for writing such and effortless story and to Zachary Webber & Andi Arndt for their flawless narration!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It was so easy to get lost in this low-angst but deeply emotional, fun and witty, good-vibe swoony story! I was lost in the town and the people and both Piper & Kyle’s growth as individuals and as romance partners. Everything about this experience was attractive and felt so very real. Listening to their story felt like I was part of the story, and I can’t say for certain that reading it would have been the same, but something tells me it would have been. I found the writing flawless, the characters well developed and the story itself very realistic.

The only aspect of the story that I would have liked to be fleshed out a bit more was Kyle’s past, especially when it came to his mother, stepfather, and half-sibling. It’s good as it is, but it would have made his growth throughout the story much more impactful had it been delved into a bit more. There’s a whole lot about his past that dictates his present circumstances and choices and for me, I would have wanted to maybe have some flashbacks to those pivotable moments when he made decisions that made him the man he is today. Honestly, I loved Kyle & Piper and their story so much that I just wanted every single detail about them LOL

I’m very impressed with this author right now and I can’t wait to experience more of her stories very soon!

✨️City Girl x Country Boy

Kyle Spencer, the king of Country, decides to call it quits on his career and head back to his hometown, a small town in Texas called Oak Grove. But his record label isn't thrilled about losing their biggest star. They send someone to try and convince Kyle to change his mind, and they send none other than Piper Egan, the woman Kyle hasn't been able to forget since their first encounter.

I love C.W. Farnsworth's writing, and she nailed it once again. The story had me hooked from the start, and I couldn't put it down. Not to mention the times I was smiling while reading.

Kyle and Piper are two incredible characters. Every time they interact, you can feel the sexual tension between them. And Piper, my girl, was completely blind to how Kyle only had eyes for her. 🤭

Kyle is *chef kiss*. He's now my current favorite book boyfriend, written by C.W. Farnsworth. I love a guy who speaks little but shows his affection through actions. I enjoyed how his decision to quit his career was portrayed and how he slowly opened up to Piper. And I have to say, I didn't see that plot twist at the end coming. 🤯

I can't forget to say that I loved Kyle's interactions with Bailey and how Piper helped with that.

💞If you're looking for a book with small-town, cowboy, and city girl vibes, with just the right mix of laughs and sexual tension, this book is for you.💞

He’s the King of Country but is done with it after a decade of running around performing across the world, celebrity status and always being in the public eye so he sets back home to the family ranch to lay low and rediscover who he is. Then there is Piper who has been asked by work to convince Kyle to sign the new contract for the music label as he is an asset to the company. Little does she know this may change her plans forever.

I loved this book! The character depth we had especially with Kyle was fantastic. Piper was great but also not a pushover, she set out on a mission, and she was stubborn but also patient and supportive of Kyle. I loved the country boy, city girl vibes, the friends group and the tension and angst between the FMC and MMC.

I’m enjoying C.W.'s work and writing it just makes you feel good by the end of the book.

King of Country by C.W. Farnsworth-

This is what I would consider an extremely slow burn. The pace was slow and didn’t really pick up until halfway through the novel, contributing to the difficulty I had getting into this read. I also felt that the main characters and the plot were a bit…boring. Kyle is The King of Country, a big-time star in the country music industry, who returns home to his ranch when his contract with Empire Records is up. He doesn’t plan to return to country music. Piper works for Empire Records and isn’t a fan of country music or Kyle for that matter but, is chosen and sent to his home to convince him to sign a new contract. Piper shows up on his ranch and their journey together begins…

There were a couple of small plot twists but the events of the story and the twists weren’t that exciting. However, I did like the closeness of the relationship that developed between Piper and Kyle and the actual writing is good. There is a decent cast of support characters ranging from Kyle’s agent to his long time friends from childhood. It’s a cute contemporary romance, I just wasn’t able to personally connect with or really get invested with the story.

I received an advance reader copy and am leaving a review voluntarily.

"It’s probably because I’ve been a little bit in love with you ever since you told me you hated my twang.”
My breath hitches. “You’re a little bit in love with me?”
He smiles. “No. I’m so crazy in love with you that I don’t know what to do with myself.”

Kyle felt like Bradley Cooper in A Star is Born. He's tired, a little bit broken, but still kind and loving. The affectionate arguing between him and Piper had excellent tension. I loved how these two came together and expressed their feelings. If I have a complaint, it's that I wanted even more of them.

It was a celebrity story but with less of the celebrity drama that I don't normally enjoy. There are no crazy fans or desperate women trying to steal him. It was surprisingly sweet and slow burning.

hm. i got myself in a bit of a pickle because i really thought i will end up liking it better… but it’s my second book from this author and i have pretty similar feelings to which i had after i finished fake empire.

it really wasn’t bad. it’s definitely an easy read. but i feel like it lacked in depth a bit. there was just something missing. maybe it was chemistry because i didn’t really care that much about them being together…

and there was also lot of plot lines that were introduced, but ended up not being that important? (see — the similarity with fake empire) SPOILER f.e. her own history with trying to be an artist and the bomb her boss dropped on her towards the end of the book. it threw me out of the loop a bit. that’s the best way to describe it i think.

King Of Country by C.W. Farnsworth 🤠

He wrote a song about her after meeting the first time and she has no idea! She doesn't like country music and doesn't care that he's known as the king of country! He's never sang the song he wrote about her live because she's never been in the audience! I was obsessed with this!

Kyle is known as the king of country music, however he has decided that he does not want to resign with his label and to step away from music. Piper works for the label that is trying to change his mind and in an attempt to do that, she is sent to the small town ranch that Kyle lives on. The first chapter of the book gives us a peak at Kyle and Piper meeting for the first time. Kyle was intrigued by her from the first look despite Piper basically ignoring him then and every other meeting until we reach present day. I liked how this added context to how they knew each other before Piper shows up at his ranch. While the whole point of Piper being there is to try and get Kyle to resign, I liked how she didn't push him too hard. She understood why he didn't want to go back to music despite not getting the full picture until later one. So Piper was content to spend time on the ranch with him until work called her back.

The tension and banter between them both was so good throughout the book. It's not quite a slow burn but feels like one with how the relationship developed. There are little puzzle pieces of sorts sprinkled throughout the story that add to the characters and provide context to moments that I otherwise would have seen as an insignificant moment. It's suspected that Kyle was down bad for Piper from the start then getting to see all the little moments along the way that proved it was so fun.

This was the first book I've read from the author and I'm excited to read more!

If there’s one thing I can always count on it’s this author delivering a 5 star read 🫡

Kyle and Piper and acquaintances at best but getting the assignment to convince him to re-sign with the record label she works for is what pushes their acquaintance status into something more. This book is a slow burn while also being sorta fast paced.

While Kyle and Piper have known each other for years at this point, this is the first time they have actually spent any time together. She gives up pretty easily imo of getting him to sign a new contract but stays in Texas for two weeks with Kyle on his ranch. During these two weeks is where feelings start to develop but Piper is called back to work. I think a few weeks go by before they reunite but all in all their relationships goes 0-100 fairly quickly.

Charlotte’s books are like a drug to me. They all just hit. This one was no different. I think there’s like one or two I haven’t read just bc I didn’t like the main characters as side characters is previous books.

Kyle Spencer is the king of country music. She's the city girl sent to talk him into returning to the stage.

Piper has dreams discovering new musical talent for the record label she works for. When Kyle Spencer, the King of Country, tells the label he won't re-sign his contract and is done with his music career, Piper is sent to small town Texas to convince him to re-sign. Easier said than done...

I did enjoy this book, but I also feel like it fell flat. The plot was there and had so much potential. But I felt like it was missing out on so many opportunities for more conflict, more angst, and more push and pull between Piper and Kyle. There was a lot unsaid between them. He was stubborn from the start about being done with his music career, and it just felt like Piper just threw in the towel too quickly and gave up on her task.

The feelings between the two also felt like they came out of nowhere. We know that Kyle has had a crush on Piper based on what you read in the prologue, but a majority of their time together in Texas is very quiet, a lot of bickering, and Piper feeling like a fish out of water. Kyle quietly pursues her, but nothing really groundbreaking happens to build their relationship or explore their growing feelings.

Once we get the reason why Kyle is stepping away from music is where I think the book really kicks into gear. By that point, they have an established connection, and the big secret allows the story to move along.

I do appreciate the complex feelings that both characters explore in regards to what they want out of life, career and relationships. I also enjoyed the book setting mostly being in small town Texas on the ranch. The setting felt like it truly enabled both characters to embrace the quiet, peace and slow life to allow them to truly think about what they want for their futures. It's also cute how clueless Piper is about how Kyle feels about her. And bonus, we get some character crossover with Harper and Drew from the book Six Summers to Fall!

While I think there were some editing issues and felt like the characters could have been develpped more, I still really did enjoy the book and would recommend it! Also, if you've seen the old 90s move Pure Country starting George Strait... I got those vibes reading this book!

Thank you Valentine PR for the Advanced reader copy to read and review!

Kyle Spencer is consuming. The more time I spent around him, the more space he takes up. In my thoughts, in my fantasies, in my emotions.

Was this my first C.W. Farnsworth read? Yes. Will it be my last? Absolutely not because LOVED IT! King of Country had a handful of tropes I’ve been craving for a hot minute. Mainly “fish out of water” mixed with forced proximity. There’s something sort of special about falling in love (reluctantly😂) when you’re out of your comfort zone. Plus a country singer and a heroine who doesn’t really like country music?! Here for it. While KoC provided what I was looking for and then some, it took the tropes I wanted and spun them on their head. In the best ways.

Piper is sent to Kyle’s hometown to convince him to renew his contract with the record label she works for, and while these two are not pleased about being forced together in this way, the universe decides what they don’t want may be exactly what they need. Piper fits into his life and his town a little better than he ever could have hoped for, and yeah he may have secretly hoped. Piper was in Texas for one reason, to get a signature, but it turns into so much more for her. Sort of a crossroads for her in multiple ways.

KoC is definitely a medium burn, in my opinion, but I think it 100% makes sense for the circumstance these two are in. The way the story unfolds truly feels like it could make the perfect movie. I think the author did a great job getting me to root for Piper and Kyle and had me feeling all of the emotions and tension between them. This one is mostly fun small town romance vibes, but there’s also a layer of heartfelt emotion to this story as well that I think many readers will find relatable.

Highly recommend to anyone who is in their small town/cowboy adjacent era, or you know the ones who like me love that tense forced proximity and “fish out of water” trope in their romance books. King of Country serves it up certified platinum.

3✨ i love the plot but the execution wasn’t there.

kyle spencer. so much potential as a character. i didn’t not like him but he could have been absolutely amazing as a heartthrob country singing cowboy. he was broody and gruff and hot. i so appreciated the way he was and how he wanted to do things himself and feel accomplished in a way that kind of mattered more to him. i love how he was so kind and caring and truly played his part so well but also hated his mask. i love how he’d never forgotten piper and the few things he knew about her. and her blue rain boots. he was very sweet. but there just wasn’t enough. man’s just doing his thing, dealing with this girl and then all of a sudden he’s in love with her? the math just wasn’t making.

piper was really bugging me at the beginning. her rudeness towards kyle seemed completed unwarranted and way too superficial and unnecessary. because she doesn’t like his genre of music? cause he’s famous and nice? like how does that add up? and again, all of a sudden she’s just in love with him and willing to dive in headfirst? what was the equation? make it make sense. she blended in pretty well which i liked and she got over the bitchiness but it just gave bad vibes off the bat. she was alright. loved the hair.

i had such high hopes for this after seeing sooo many hype for so long but sadly is was a huge let down for me. it could have been so so good but it felt so…cut & paste? like just all of a sudden things were happening or had happened out of nowhere. i should’ve dnf’d at 30% like i wanted to but then curiosity kept me going and then pure stubbornness cause i was too far and i had to know. but i was so bored. it had its moments, don’t get me wrong. but they were few and far between and not amazing.

”She looks good in anything. But wearing the beat-up hat I’ve had since high school? She looks like mine.”

this was so fun!! this one has two of my all time fave narrators and they absolutely never disappoint! i really loved the small town vibes of this one. i thought the concept of the biggest country singer wanting to retire and the label sending out someone to convince him otherwise was so fun.

i don’t usually love pop-star books but this one had such a different vibe. kyle was so closed off and adamant about not wanting to resign with his label and wanting to just retire while piper was afraid to lose her job is she couldn’t convince him to resign. i loved getting to see kyle’s life in the small town and learn more about his friends. i think it really highlighted how kyle is just a normal guy vs this huge star everyone else sees him as. he opened up about how he could never tell if someone liked him for him or because he was famous and i think it was done in such a humanizing way that the reader was able to understand exactly what he meant.

piper feels a little lost but also knows she loves music. she was a good balance to kyle while she stayed with him for a little bit. i loved getting to see their relationship develop organically!

this book had the perfect ending for their story too!
