Betty Foster is known as a beautiful, wildly-loved ballerina. One morning, Betty’s husband reports her as missing and her car is found in the river. Where is Betty? Is she dead? What really happened the night before? Or better yet, exactly who is Betty Foster?

At first, I was vibing with it and enjoying the mystery! But I sadly ended up skimming through the final quarter.

There are A LOT of punctuation mistakes, which I was ignoring at first, but then I encountered this sentence:

“Speaking of meeting, Mr Foster on the night she went missing really about?…”

That’s straight up quoted from the book, I don’t think there was an editor at all, and one of my main problems was that a bit further in the beginning, a body is found but the police can’t say tell who it is for some reason? Absolutely 0 identity, Jane Doe 100%. I would understand this if the face was absolutely ripped off or mutilated, but this wasn’t the case at all, that body was in the river for a couple of days! The whole book then onwards is built around “ohoho whose body is it??”. Initially, I was willing to turn a blind side to it but because the whole mystery is built on this, I just couldn’t excuse it anymore.

Another great contributor for my low rating and almost dnf-ing was the pure coincidence/absolute improbability that the twist relied on, reality went out of the window in the last part of the book and by that point, it just felt lazy and I stopped caring.

A good protagonist on a complex police case

The story starts after a prologue that could have been shortened or omitted then moved along at a good pace. There are a lot of characters introduced to keep track of as their relevance manifests later.

I did get a little ‘lost’ once or twice as the case unraveled and some things were not crystal clear. After following a slowly building case and the progress of Maxi, the protagonist detective, the end rushes up on you. The last chapters could have developed the resolution a little more.

While it says it is book 1, the story comes to a conclusion with no abrupt ending or cliffhanger, which is nice.

I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrator did a fantastic job narrating the book. It felt like I was reading an Agatha Christie novel. However, I do wish the book was a bit longer, everything seems to move too quickly. Plus, it would've been nice to see the characters fleshed out a little better.

I am a huge fan of this book, and I am thrilled that it is going to be a series. I guess you would consider this a mystery/ cop-procedural with a little ballet and shady business on the side. It was a very interesting and full of suspense. I loved the characters. Betty's mother-in-law was a trip, in more ways than one, but she had me cracking up whenever she appeared in the book. Just her attitude cracked me up. She is a total love to hate character. Chad was another strange one. But he definitely added to the book. I just remember thinking holy crap a lot throughout this read!
This book kept me on my toes throughout the entire thing. There were so many twist and turns, its unreal. Every time I though I had things out, I would find out in the next chapter that I was completely wrong. I'm usually pretty good a figuring out plot lines fairly fast, usually. It was like each chapter let out a little more of a secrete and a little more in the next chapter. I was constantly kept guessing and constantly wrong with a lot of my guesses (lol) Zee David definitely can write a great suspense novel. I'm hoping in book two, if Detective Maximus is in it, I hope we find out more of his background story. Although, who knows what book two is going to be like. Every time I think I know... I definitely don't. So I'm not even going to try and guess what the next book will be like. I just know I am looking forward to see what book 2 is like!!

"Misty" is an enthralling suspense thriller that skillfully weaves together the destinies of Detective Maximus and the talented ballerina, Dancer Betty. The narrative unfolds in a world shrouded in shadows, where the dazzling exterior of the dance industry hides a grim reality of manipulation, exploitation, and fear.

As the plot unfolds, Betty emerges as a courageous emblem of resistance, fearlessly taking on the mantle of a voice for the voiceless. The novel poignantly portrays her transformation from a vulnerable dancer to a beacon of strength, as she confronts the rampant issues of sexual abuse and blackmail that plague the lives of her fellow dancers. Betty's unwavering determination to expose the truth behind the enigmatic figure of Hugo, the multimillionaire founder of the M. Club, forms the central core of the story.

The narrative isn't confined to the present; it's beautifully interwoven with historical elements that gradually unravel Betty's past. Her quest for justice unexpectedly leads her to a revelation about her father's murder, blending a historical investigation seamlessly into the modern-day mystery.

The author's impeccable storytelling is complemented by vivid descriptions that paint a clear picture of the dance world's opulence and its darker underbelly. The reader is transported into a realm where dreams and nightmares collide, making for an emotionally charged experience.

In conclusion, "Misty" is an intricate tapestry of suspense and mystery, exploring the resilience of the human spirit against the backdrop of the dance world's complexities. With its engaging characters, riveting plot twists, and insightful exploration of social issues, the novel captivates readers from the very first page, leaving an indelible mark long after the final chapter.

Misty (Book 1 of the Betty Foster Mystery Series by Zee David) absolutely hooked me from the very first page—and didn’t let go. I went into this thinking I’d get a cozy little mystery, but what I got instead was something deeper, darker, and far more gripping than I ever expected.

From the moment Betty’s car is found abandoned and she’s suddenly gone without a trace, my brain went into full detective mode. But here’s the kicker—I had no idea who or what to trust. Zee David does an incredible job of building suspense while slowly peeling back the layers of a woman everyone thinks they know… and it’s that unraveling that completely pulled me in.

Betty is one of those characters who lingers in your mind long after you close the book. She's a ballerina, a wife, a so-called socialist—but every new detail made me question what was real and what was carefully constructed fiction. Is she a victim? A runaway? A mastermind? Every theory I had was immediately shaken by the next twist, and I loved every second of it.

And the writing? So atmospheric and clever. There’s this eerie, almost cinematic tension woven throughout, and even when I thought I had a grip on the truth, the next page would throw me sideways. It’s like Zee David handed me a puzzle with extra pieces that don’t quite fit—until they suddenly do.

I love a mystery that challenges me, teases me, and surprises me—and Misty delivered all of that with style. By the end, I was still thinking about Betty Foster, and honestly? I can’t wait to dig into book two. If you love mysteries with strong women, unreliable truths, and a story that keeps you guessing right until the final page, you need this book in your life.

Zee David, you’ve got me hooked. Now I have to know what happens next.

A short book but a good one. It's a multi-layered tale, told from the point of view of a number of different characters, and this ensures the pace never flags. The starting point of the story is very simple: ballerina Betty Foster has gone missing after a family row, and when her car is recovered from the local river, the outcome might seem predictable. But predictable it isn't. Each chapter introduces a fresh complication, sometimes turning our earlier understanding of events on its head. I read the book in a single sitting, and I lost track of the number of times I had to turn back to an earlier chapter to check that I hadn't missed, or misunderstood, something. But no, I hadn’t; this is all part of the book. The author’s intention (I presume) is that we should keep changing our suspicions as to what the truth of the ballerina’s disappearance is. The eventual "solution" was a surprise, but is a logical outcome of what has gone on before. I do have some reservations about the book. I found the prologue a bit confusing and would, personally, have preferred it to begin at chapter one. And the shortness of the book (while making it an easy read) does mean that there is a lot more "tell" than "show", with the result that while I could admire the cleverness of the story, I never felt as emotionally invested as I would have liked. So the book might not be to everyone's taste, but I felt it still deserves my four star rating.

I’m a fan of mysteries and thrillers, so I was interested when I came across this book. Out of the gate, I liked the tone this book set. It was very effective how the beginning of this book drew you into the world of ballet. I don’t know a lot about ballet, but it got me into the mentality of an important component that had influence throughout the book.

As the story went along, we start piecing together the clues of what’s happening from the viewpoints of different characters in the story. I thought this was done really well. We’re still just given bits and pieces of the truth told from different angles, the characters just revealing enough to keep us guessing. While it would have still been a good story all told from Detective Maximus Brown’s eyes, I felt the changeup in perspectives added a lot to the overall enjoyment of the narrative. Despite the different viewpoints, it was easy to keep track of what was going on.

By the end, when the truth comes out, the sinister things going on were on a much larger scale than I anticipated. I thought the ending was really satisfying. This book kept me interested and engaged the entire read. I would definitely be up for checking out more books in this series. I’d recommend this for anyone that wanted a quick, solid mystery read.

Great Mystery!

Misty by Zee David is a gripping crime fiction mystery that keeps readers on edge until the very end. The story centers around Betty Foster, a seemingly average woman with a secret past. When Betty goes missing, Detective Maximus Brown is tasked with unraveling the mystery of her disappearance.

David's writing style is engaging and draws readers into the story immediately. The plot is well-developed and full of twists and turns that keep readers guessing until the very end. The characters are well-crafted, and the dialogue is realistic and believable, adding depth to the story.

One of the strengths of Misty is its exploration of the complex and often murky nature of human relationships. As the story unfolds, secrets are revealed, and the true motivations of the characters are exposed. David expertly weaves together the different plot threads to create a cohesive and satisfying ending.

Overall, Misty is a compelling and well-written crime fiction mystery that is sure to captivate readers. David's ability to create a suspenseful and engaging story will leave readers eagerly anticipating her next novel.

I listened to the audiobook version and overall, I found it only a little enjoyable at times. I believe that the narrator, Juanelle Holl helped to strengthen the book though. Her mild French accent was soothing to listen to. The story wasn’t bad. I found the glimpse into the world of ballet interesting. It is a dialogue heavy book that handled the interaction between characters well. The story itself lost me a few times throughout, but I still have some positives to highlight. The cover of the book is great, and it made me curious to read it. It is a short novella and so it was worth the read just to explore the writing style of Zee David. The dialogue is well done, and I didn’t mind the first-person point of view jumping from character to character because of the way that it was handled. The beginning of each chapter states the character who the first-person point of view will be told from. The mystery and crime solving investigation parts of the book didn’t really pique my interest, but I still appreciated the book as the art that it is as written by Zee David.

I enjoyed this opening to the Betty Foster Mystery series, it had a great tense atmosphere that good mysteries had. The stories' description drew me in and I'm so glad I got to read this. It did everything that I was hoping for and the characters were well-written. I'm excited to read more from Zee David.

"Do you think Hugo was the father to Betty’s baby? And was Nathan aware of it?” His question made me turn toward him—my junior detective, he wore a grey shirt and brown khaki pants. “I don’t know, Gideon,” I took the driver’s seat; I had a lot to do while we drove. “If Hugo was abusing Betty in that home, why didn’t she leave?”

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I enjoyed this quick book. A who-done it? Suspense? Books rarely surprise me, but I wasn’t expecting the ending. Probably because we didn’t have time to get any information really. I’ve seen other reviews state that they found it ridiculous that the police. Couldn’t identify the body but the Bettys looked so much a like that they were able to pass off as each other to people who didn’t know them. One thing that I did think was crazy, was that Chad never asked for a lawyer and proceeded to just tell the police everything. That would never happen but I guess for the sake of a short book, they had to get to the point as quickly as possible.
This was a good book for me because I don’t really have time or focus to get into anything big. So its size was perfect.

MISTY Book 1 in the Betty Foster Mystery Series by Zee David was a great introduction to a new series AND a new author. I must admit, however, that when I first started it, it was very technical as far as ballet terms. I thought, uh oh, but it was only the preface. The rest of the story is pure mystery and I actually wondered how the author was able to get so much intrigue into such a short book. I hope her others are just as good, as I’ve already downloaded one of her others!
There were many secrets and lies and slights of hand, or foot as it were. Everyone was harboring secrets and half truths which were nicely wrapped up by books end. GREAT JOB MS. DAVID!

This is the first book of a new series, and if the rest of the books are as good as this one, I will buy them and read them in one sitting if possible. Misty is a gripping story that kept me on the edge of my seat until the end. At first, started with a lot of technical details about ballet but later went into full suspense with lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing. Can't wait to read the next installments of the series.

Wow, that was an interesting read with a lot of twists and turns I never saw. The ballet is the perfect place to hide when trying to right a wrong done so many years ago. Ballet professionals are family of sorts but always competitive against eachother. When one disappears everyone becomes a suspect including her husband and his family. This book kept me interested and intrigued the entire time.

This book was too choppy to enjoy. Too much was crammed into too few pages. I also didn't enjoy each chapter being about a specific character, part of why I found this book too choppy. I won't read another book by this author.
